Joseph Barksdale interview

An conference call interview session with Joseph Barksdale, the second of two third-round draft picks:

(Note: DeMarcus Van Dyke was not available. The Raiders are scheduled to have all three picks at the facility for interview sessions Satruday)

Going from Detroit to LSU
It was a pretty long and extensive process as far as choosing what college to go to. But it ultimately depended on, the SEC is a pretty strong conference, and I wanted to go to a school that was successful in the SEC. I wanted to win, and LSU seemed to fit those criteria, as well as being able to graduate and putting an emphasis on education.

A former defensive tackle, using that mentality on offense
“Definitely. I’d been playing that position four years prior to switching to offensive line, so a lot of those certain mindsets and things like that I still keep with me.”
The switch to offensive line

“When I first got there, the defensive tackle position was pretty deep … I went to coach Miles early and told him I wanted to help make an impact on the team, and he told me – he knew I would be a pretty good defensive tackle, but he said I could be a pretty good offensive tackle as well and suggested moving to offensive tackle because we were pretty thin at the time. So it was pretty much to help the team out.”

Preference, left side or right side
“Not at all. I’m just trying to come in and be as productive as I can on whatever side they put me on.”

Playing both guard and tackle

“I can play any position, anything that will help the team.”
The transition from guard to tackle

“Probably a good two or three weeks.”

Knowledge of Raiders history

“My dad actually told me a lot about the Raiders when I first started playing football, about how you guys have an overall winning tradition but hard-hitting defense and a fast-paced offense. I know a lot about the offensive line tradition as well. I know Oakland has a pretty good track record when it comes to developing offensive line talent.”

Awareness of being on Raiders’ radar

“Not really, man. I was just sitting around, probably like everyone else, just waiting on a phone call and being optimistic.”

Location for draft

“Family, in Detroit, Michigan.”

Scene at his home

“Ecstatic, man. My phone is actually still ringing with relatives and fans that are calling. It’s pretty exciting, man.”

Expectations on draft?

“To be honest with you, I had no idea. I just talked to my agent, talked to my coach and, you know, my family, and they just told me, keep your calm on, and that way you don’t know when you’ll be called, but when you are called you’ll be ready.”

A chance to start

“That would be something I have to discuss with the coaches. But all I know for sure is that I’m gonna come in and I’m gonna work. And let the chips fall where they may.”

Impressions of JaMarcus Russell

“I wish JaMarcus well. We actually never did play together, but I have spoken with him a couple of timesa nd he’s a good guy and I wish him well in his future endeavors.”

Of the people on that list, I’d like Cannon, House, then DJ Williams in that order. You cna fit Greg Jones in there somewhere as the weakside backer.

    ——-

Sumner is not even on my Draft Magazine….Googled it and it said “who is that’

    Who is he Bauce?

    Really..?

  • JB

    Van Dyke = JLH
An undersized athlete that eventually gets blown-up by the big kids and never recovers. If AD wanted a fast CB then he should just convert DHB to a cornerback. He’s got the size, speed and should know the routes by now. An additional bonus, balls aimed in his direction usually hit the ground. What more can you ask in a CB?

  • SnB Production

    Bauce,

I hope you are right. I just want to see a young NT type that can be developed. Don’t care about where he played college, awards or draft status/free agent.

Just get me a big young guy to throw in the rotation for when John Henderson gets tired/hurt

  • lefty12

    Undersized,I wouldn’t call a 6’1″ CB undersized.

  • JB

    Lefty
His height is ok but 170# is not going to cut it against 6’4 & 5″ 220#+ WR’s in today’s game. They’ll bump and run right over him. Just my opinion.

  • Guy

I think he means his frame Lefty

  • JB

I hope AD uses one of those 4th round picks for Marcus Cannon. That would be a real steal.

  • SnB Production

Van Dyke is as good/bad as any CB that is drafted. I think the position is overrated and that the Raiders have invested way too much money and draft picks into the position.

The game is won in the front 7……I hope the Raiders use the money saved by dumping Asomugha and use it to get an OLB, NT or WR.

The Raiders shouldn’t have paid Routt either…could have gone with McFadden and Chris Johnson and would be just as good…..if the front 7 can’t stop the run…get to the QB…then the defense will be as raggedy as its been in each of the last 10 years

  • lefty12

Henderson,Seymore,Kelly and Bryant.Do you actually believe we will get another DT?As far as DVD,he can add weight.

  • Guy

Is Davon House an option in the 4th? His stock was supposed to be going up to the 2nd round, but he’s been falling.

  • lefty12

JB,BTW,I do respect your opinion,(like you could care less).

  • JB

Just draft Marcus Cannon tomorrow & then they can draft whoever they want. 3 O-Linemen is what was called for and with Cannon it will have been a good draft. Even if he can’t play next year, the years after that will be great. He’ll be another Michael Bush type steal.

  • JB

If Barksdale can start at RT, they could move Walker into right or left guard if Loper or BCampbell aren’t ready for primetime. I do believe the Wiz will beat out Satele as starter. If not in week 1 then sometime during the first 8 weeks.

  • JB

Lefty, I do care & do recognize those posters who have good things to share. I rarely have bad things to say about the other types. I just choose to ignore their taunts.

  • JB

See you all tomorrow @ 9AM when hopefully AD picks Marcus Cannon. Enjoy the evening.

  • Guy

    4a Cannon
    4b KJ Wright/Edmond Gates
    5 Demarcus Love/Greg Jones
    6 DJ williams
    7a Fast WR
    7b Big fat NT

Anything like this and I’ll be happy

    ++++++++++++

If we want to be 29th in the league like last year then we need to add run stopping depth…

Ian Williams should be pick 17 fourth rd…

  • TerrapinRaider

don’t get references to undersized corner. 6’1″ btw and there is an interesting thing called a weight room ya know.

trust me when i say they put him in it.

reports i read says he’s very good in m/m

  • TerrapinRaider

Jackson said he’s going to fit Barsdale on the right side. Whether he starts or backup RT or RG will be totally up to him.

  • lefty12

Thec,I don’t believe the team thinks the players we have are the problem which is why we have a new DC.

  • RaiderRetribution

We know Mr. Wisniewski is our starting center, our starting LT & RT will be between Mr. Vehldeer, Mr. Campbell, Mr. Barksdale, or a top FA pickup.

Mr. Vehldeer will start, we just do not know where yet, if he doesn’t start it is because 4 others really stepped their game up; and that would be a excellent.

  • RaiderRetribution

Coach Jackson did mention [twice in fact] that Mr. Barksdale might play Left Tackle. For now he will start at RT through training camp, but could be promoted.

I hope Mr. Vehldeer has been hitting the weight room and eating lots of fish, steaks, and green veggies.

  • RaiderRetribution

The players I would like to see the raiders draft Saturday morning are:

    [in order]

Marcus Cannon OT- I’m with you JB, Al & Hue draft Marcus Cannon at #113, I would not care if they drafted place kickers the rest of the day.

Jeremy Beal LB, I think he would be a steal, a pro-bowler or a bust and we will know in two seasons

    Casey Matthews

    safeties Sands or Black

Jones LB, Mich St, could become the steal of the draft

  • RaiderDuck

Stanzi would be a good developmental type in the 4th.

I’d like McElroy, except he’s supposedly got a rubber arm. Might even be weaker than McCown’s.

Cannon would be awesome in 5th (no earlier). Best of health, wherever he ends up.

We have almost no need for another LB, but I’d still love to see Casey Matthews in the Silver & Black.

  • armond

didnt know that dj williams was available. he is the best recieving te in the draft. he can really get down field. cannon might be around in the 5th rnd cuz of his medical condition. van dyke reminds me alot of merton hanks. hanks was a skinny db who was a hell of a ball hawk when he was moved to fs.

We already got that guy, only better and with NFL expernc. His name is sir Marcel Reece the REAL X factor.

  • http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Al_Davis The Realist Dirty Raccoon

So Wiz is 313lbs and Barksdale is 325 a diff of 12lbs

Wiz is 2.5″ shorter than J. Bark, but some how he is too light?

How many C’s are bigger than 6’3″ 313lbs? and he will get bigger/stronger.

  • RaiderRetribution

    you tell em’ Racs!

  • Raider 510

I love the draft so far. I thought CB wasn’t a priority but I’m happy with the Van Dyke pick. Couldn’t be happier with the attention to Oline, now I think we need to go TE with our first pick tomorrow, then OLB. If we get Cullen Jenkins as a Free Agent we’re makin the playoffs. Make it happen Hue!

  • RaiderRetribution

I can see the Raiders still resigning Mr. Asomugha, if he is willing to accept a contract for 10-12 million for two years.

That would mean that Mr. Van Dykes will be competing with Mr. Ware, Mr. W. McFadden, and Mr. C. Johnson for a backup CB position.

  • RaiderRetribution

10-12 a year for two years

  • RaiderRetribution

I really like our RB situation, not that impressed with the class of RBs in this years draft.

Mr. Bush & Mr. D. McFadden would both go before Ingram.

  • RaiderRetribution

I think the Raiders could get Clausen or Pike, Leinart, Tvaris Jackson, off the FA wire easily.

  • http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Al_Davis The Realist Dirty Raccoon

10/2/10: Barksdale isn’t getting the national recognition he deserves. He is by far the best technician in his draft class. He has elite knee bend, has textbook hand use, and displays nice patience in pass protection. He’s a very athletic, talented player who will eventually be climbing 2011 NFL Draft boards.

4/3/10: Could be the first left tackle chosen in the 2011 NFL Draft. Joseph Barksdale is a very athletic lineman who had a great year with LSU. He’ll move over to the blind side in 2010.

This rns place is pretty great. I say DO try Barsdale at Defensive tackle. “The next Haloti Ngata?!”

    Hel–ls yeah!!!

  • 1eyedpirate

pretty good draft so far…. with wiz and barksdale we get some much needed youth and power… wiz is gonna be nasty we know this from his genepool and uncle is watching… barksdale is from friggn detroit and an ex DT… I am a firm beleiver in that a teams strength should be their o-line and we are showing an eagerness to address that… I agree with taking Matthews if he is there, if his output is half of that his bro he will be well worth the pick…

We have a great TE in Miller. If for some reason he leaves our X factor Reece can help out there, though I much rather see X. Reece in the backfield.

  • 1eyedpirate

if cannon is available durning our supplemental pick then we should take him… other than that its a crapshoot at this point

His father, Clay Matthews, Jr., played football as an All-American at USC and had a 19-year professional football career in the National Football League.[1] His grandfather, Clay, Sr., and uncle, Bruce, both played in the NFL as well, and his brother, Clay, was selected in the 2009 NFL Draft and put up great numbers in the 2011 Super Bowl being the runner up for the 2011 defensive player of the year award and won the superbowl.[4] His cousin, Kevin, is a center for the Tennessee Titans. His brother Kyle was also a walk-on at USC.
