Ausberry closes it out in seventh

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Saturday, April 30th, 2011 at 3:57 pm in Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders’ final choice is USC wide receiver David Ausberry, who at 6-foot-3, 241 pounds will probably be looked at as a tight end or fullback.

A wide receiver compared to Mike Williams who was moved to tight end as a senior, had 64 catches for 700 yards and seven touchdowns for his career.

If I know anything whatever about Al Davis, he hates how far you go up his arse.

We could be speculating for a while.

  • http://raiders.com A.B. Paine III

Maybe the Raiders can trade next years 6th rounder for another 7th this year.

  • Harder2000

If he is supposed to be a WR he adds some size – had a stress fracture like Chaz did, so lets hope it doesnt bother him as much as it has done Chaz.. Terrence Toliver is a better reciever though, and just as big! Well see what they contemplate, but seems too small to play TE and too tall and light to play FB.. Hope they can use him, he is a physical dude, thats for sure!

    not one linebacker,

hey that mean Mr. Sam Williams & Mr. Ricky Brown will still have a roster spot.

Goethel will be starting next year.

  • Pretty Rick

Couldve used an olb,, well drafting these Wrs should spell the end for Glass Schilens .

  • Harder2000

*Not too small to play TE, just too small to be a blocking presence..

  • Bauce Rules

Well here’s hoping Tommy Kelly gets a high ankle sprain in the preseason so Hendu and Seymour start…..run D gonna suffer again if not that

  • priesttj

Guys I know you’ll think I’m joking but I absolutely LOVE the David Ausberry pick he is a 240 lbs. WR about 6′4″ and can run. he is fluid and a possesion type guy who didn’t play much at USC. but I’ve talked to a particular scout for us about him many times and I cannot believe he got him in.

He is a lot like Marcel Reece very similar H-back type guy. He mad esome tough catches for USC in some big games but for some reason the staff didn’t play him a lot.

I’m telling ya’ this is NOT a trow away pick it’s exact;y the kind of pick we do well with………I’m in disbelief right now that he remembered this kid. and got him.

  • http://www.raiders.com/ r8eray

Ausberry?? Well at least he had more receiving yards and touchdowns than DHB!!

Too bad Eagles drafted that fullback (Havili) everyone was looking at!

  • hendu

Gotta give the Raiders a B,IMO.Guess they plan on free agency to address defense and a 3rd QB,unless I missed somethin! That said,RAIDERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PS last year was the only year that I didnt get season tickets, and it will be the ONLY year!

This aint speculation<—–Chad Johnson your starting in Oakland next year

  • http://www.raiders.com/ r8eray

Bauce, what did you think of this draft?

  • Guy

Priest I know you’re a strong supporter of Al, but how can you justify the Gordon pick?

  • ENGLANDRAIDER

    RAIDERS UBER ALLES!

  • priesttj

David is a lot like Marcel Reece almost the same player can go over the middle and make some tough catches. While we did get some speed this draft we got a couple of kids that on 3rd down can make the play.

I think David will be a big help there, but D Moore right now has the best hands on this team………….period

  • Bauce Rules

BHP actually im not too much of a big fan of any of the picks today outside of Taiwan Jones but Ill roll with my dawg Al Davis. We havent finished completing our roster for sure

  • JB

Where are these guys going to end up:

    • Kevin Booth – G
    • Jared Gaither – OT
    • Matt Light – OT
    • Willie Colon – OT

  • priesttj

What do you mean justify if you don’t understand football just say so. I don’t have to justify that pick he was drafted to set the edge (help the RB turn the corner) it’s a fundamental pick. Whew!!

  • http://raiders.com A.B. Paine III

I give the Raiders a B for this draft.

  • Bauce Rules

DRAFT today r8eray wasnt exciting as yesterday……C/C + range i say

  • radrntn

I’m back…just paid raiders for season tickets. I think this team is heading in the right direction……starting o-line velhedeer, loper, wiz, campbell, and barksdale at rt.

  • beast 21
  • Guy

Some scouting reports say he isn’t an overly strong blocker though

  • GForce21

Wow Priest you are really really smart. You have probably forgot more football than Al Davis knows currently.

  • radrntn

    Carson Palmer – QB
    • Alex Smith – QB

Jb…..chad is coming to oakland….that is a for sure Al is jumping all over that and hue will for sure sign off on that move for his offense. carl nicks at guard is the vet the oline needs

  • Chris in NY

Seems like an OK draft. I think Wisniewski and Moore will be the highlights. Addressed some needs. Hopefully it works out.

The one glaring thing to me is the fact that we still have not added a QB and appear to be letting Grads walk. Sorry, but I have absolutely no faith in Jason Campbell. I really hope Al has his sights set on Vince Young.

  • raidertbone

    Carson Palmer – Redskins
    Alex Smith – Buffalo
    Troy Smith – Arizona
    Chad OchoWhatever – Carolina
Albert Haynesworth – Johnstown Correctional Facility
    Pat Williams – Green Bay
    Logan Mankins – New England
    Carl Nicks – Giants
Kevin Booth – Raiders (yes, you heard me right!)
    Jared Gaither – Tampa Bay
    Matt Light – Seattle
    Willie Colon – Rams
    (those are my guesses)

  • Kirk

They should make Bruce Campbell a fullback.

  • Lowdown_in_Beijing

In 2003 Scout.com said the Raiders were draft losers and had this to say: “- Nnamdi Asomugha is a nice player but not first round material.”

Success is bound to no round.

Denver Ponies had a couple of solid value picks to finish off the night, would have loved to see Beal and Green as Raiders! Now they need to get squashed by Raiders!

USC hosted representatives from 31 of the 32 NFL teams Wednesday at Cromwell Field as the Trojans hosted their annual Pro Day.

Of the representatives, two head coaches, Jason Garrett of the Dallas Cowboys and Hue Jackson of the Oakland Raiders, as well as three general managers came to scout USC’s talented prospects.

Ausberry fastest Trojan on Pro Day.

David Ausberry, who was USC’s largest receiver at 6-foot-4, 235 pounds last season, posted an impressive 40-yard dash time of 4.46 seconds. Ausberry has always had a lot of potential but was never able to harness that potential at the right time, and was also hindered by nagging injuries.

His performance at Pro Day might do enough to make scouts take a second look at him because of his tremendous potential and upside (size and speed). Other notable times included outside linebackers Michael Morgan and Malcolm Smith, who posted times of 4.47 and 4.51 respectively. Speedy wide receiver Ronald Johnson also posted a time of 4.49 seconds.

  • Guy

Hey bauce was Ian Williams drafted yet? He might be a possible UDFA

  • raidertbone

Vince Young?! Vince Young?! You gotta be f-ing me! There is a reason why he is being let go in Tennessee (just as Matty L. was let go from the Cardinals). Can’t lead a team — we don’t need him; we don’t want him! I’d rather pull the trigger and lure away Matt Flynn away from his backup role with the Packers, or bring an undrafted QB to compete. Jason may not be the long-term solution at QB, but once we got all the bugs worked out, we did okay.

  • Bauce Rules

Chris no faith in the guy who was 7-5 as starter? Gannon was 6-6 thru his first 12 starts. Grad sucks chris. Never won back to back games in his career and wasnt accurate. He was nothing near a starter

I think one of the two Smith QB’s will end up in Oakland. I also think Chad Ocho Cinco could end up with the Raiders. Lastly, Haynesworth is a possibility if the purchase price is right.

  • YoungAmerican

A good, intelligent center will make the rest of the offensive line better. Hopefully that’s what Wiz will do for the Raiders.

I’m not in their war room, but I do know these things: Steve Smith has pretty much cleaned out his locker in Carolina. Cam Newton loves Ocho (or whatever the hell he calls himself these days) and it would certainly be good for him to have a proven Go-To #1 receiver. Carolina will still be green for a couple of years, but it might be worth the investment.
