Day 3 coming up
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Saturday, April 30th, 2011 at 8:55 am in Oakland Raiders.
The Raiders open the third day of the draft with the following picks:
Round 4 (No. 113)
Round 4 (No. 125) from New England
Round 5 (No. 148)
Round 6 (No. 181)
Round 7 (No. 241) compensatory pick
The Raiders dealt their other seventh-round pick, No. 219, to the Patriots as part of the deal which also got them an extra third (LSU tackle James Barksdale) and fourth round pick. Deals can be made with any of these picks except the compensatory pick, which cannot be traded.

Agreed Severeraiderz, we might have to get aggressive, but both have a special talent! Could use a big, strong fast, reliable WR and Cannon will be a huge steal in a year!

Also good analysis of Wiz II, i think we reached by 10-15 spots at least. he will be a solid player and i hope he turns out to be a great one
April 30th, 2011 at 8:58 am
@ J Hill – If you want a FB i suppose it is a punishing one: Hope for Marecic! He is a mean, mean man! He would be the perfect supplement for Reece in our running game!
April 30th, 2011 at 8:58 am
5 more O-Line!
April 30th, 2011 at 8:59 am
There has to be more Branches, Barnwells, and Wizneiwskis in there!
April 30th, 2011 at 8:59 am
Gotta love how some draftniks are calling Baby Wiz a reach, and in the next sentence saying that he should be decade-long starter at Center.
A decade-long starter with a 2nd-Rounder? And this is reach HOW, exactly???
April 30th, 2011 at 8:59 am
You can tell Hue’s in charge, huh? You know he wanted Wizniewski all along.
April 30th, 2011 at 9:00 am
As you say Severeraiderz, a reach doesnt make a player bad, just means we might have been able to get a little bit more! As you, i also think he will be solid and hope for him to be great! He has the intangibles at least!
April 30th, 2011 at 9:00 am
Hope we finish strong today
April 30th, 2011 at 9:00 am
Draft Boling, draft Cannon, draft Greg Jones, draft Todman, sign TJ yates as a FA when we can!!!
April 30th, 2011 at 9:00 am
Hope for Marecic!
—————————————————–
Eff Yeah!
I wanted him in rd 3 but was told we could get him in rd 5.
I think Reece should be moved to #2 TE.
April 30th, 2011 at 9:00 am
Wizneiwski wasn’t a reach at all. The whole league wanted him. Al had to trade up to get him. He was a hot commodity. This was definitely not one of Al’s goofy legacy picks. this guy was a blue chip.
April 30th, 2011 at 9:00 am
The pre-draft stuff I read about Wiz said he wasn’t very strong and is more of a zone blocker….hope that is all BS.
April 30th, 2011 at 9:01 am
Jhill,
Marcel Reece is fast and a playmaker. Al Davis is not replacing him….nor should he. The running game was fine with Marcel Reece back there and he gives the team another dimension in the passing game.
Why replace the few guys on this team that provide actual PRODUCTION. Tired of all these all potential guys that don’t do jack.
Tyvon Branch is also very fast. He’s starting at free this year.
Who cares about the secondary anyway. Its an overrated position. Get a bunch of dogs up front and unleash hell…
April 30th, 2011 at 9:02 am
Also good analysis of Wiz II, i think we reached by 10-15 spots at least.

Which means he would not have been available when we picked in rd 3.

Hear that? Al Davis is not replacing him. I find comfort knowing that Al DAvis is running this draft. We’re in good hands.

Too bad we took Walter McFadden one pick ahead of John Conner last year.
April 30th, 2011 at 9:04 am
I like:
NT Jerrell Powe
OT David Mims
QB Josh Portis
RB Roy Helu
RB Taiwan Jones
WR Terrence Tolliver
WR Edmund Gates
WR Ricardo Lockette
TE Luke Stocker
TE Jordan Cameron
CB Cortez Allen
CB Buster Skrine
FS Robert Sands
April 30th, 2011 at 9:04 am
Harder, tell me why a team that’s 8-8 and right at the point between succeeding and failing takes a chance on a “reach”? Shouldn’t we be taking the best players possible? Shouldn’t we rack up a couple of playoff appearances for this squad before we start gambling on guys just because of their namesake?

////////////////////////////////////
Means that we could easily have moved back and got picks and still picked him up. The best drafting teams (Pats, GB, Balt) do this and maximize the value. Al thought Sea Bass was going to be a 15 year Raider, doesnt mean that he didn’t reach by taking him in the 1st. Same argument that was made about DHb before we knew how bad his hands were, people weren’t mad that we picked him, it was where we picked him

Agreed.

I don’t agree with Hue Jackson picking Wizneiwski. Hue Jackson should be more concentrated on building a team than upholding some Raider legacy. Come on, Hue Jackson. This guy’s supposed to be a genius?

Jhill,
If he’s fast and a playmaker…doesn’t that make him the textbook Raider?
Don’t think Davis is keen to replace Marcel Reece.
If we can have two 3-techniques up the middle….then we can have a “wide receiver” at fullback….at least with Reece at Fullback we had a top tier running attack.
The run defense with two 3-techs up the middle was 29th. Let’s fix what is actually broken first
April 30th, 2011 at 9:07 am
@ J Hill – the reach of Wiz was meant as a possibility to move back and pile some picks as other did — We chose him right away, didn’t wait to hear potential trades..
But it doesnt matter, he is a Raider and a great blue collar worker, he will hopefully have a solid and great raider career! Starting C of years to come!
Now – lets get the diamonds of the later rds in the draft!

You’re assuming that there was a dance partner for a trade back. AND that some other teams doesn’t jump ahead of us and nab the guy.
A “reach” to me is taking a guy a full rd or 2 ahead of where he should go. Or taking the 7th best player at a position when the #1 guy is sitting right there.
15 spots is not a reach, imo.
And I wasn’t touting Wiz as a player we should draft, by the way.

Look, you and others are saying that we have to basically roll with the way the team is organized.
Al Davis is all about speed and athleticsm. Tyvon Branch is fast and can hit. He ain’t going anywhere.
Not saying its right…just saying. Perhaps the team feels the coaches are the problem (quoting Lefty) and hence the new DC.
We will have two 3-techs up the middle, slide Branch to FS, Mitchell will be in the box and Chris Johnson and Stanford Routt will man the corners.
If the front 7 stops the run and gets the QB, you won’t even know who is playing in the secondary.
Raiders should never draft another defensive back for the next 3 years barring injury.
They got enough guys to pull something together
April 30th, 2011 at 9:13 am

15 spots is a reach…we took DHB about 15 spots too early with better players on the board; same scenario with Wiz. Remember all of the calls that were coming in Day 1, do you not think that were getting a lot of calls with Daquan Bowers and Ijalana still on the board on day 2???
April 30th, 2011 at 9:16 am
There goes Clint Boling. Not totally sure we would’ve gone OL for three out of four picks anyway…
April 30th, 2011 at 9:18 am
Bill Polian says studies have shown 50% of 1st round picks fail to live up to expectations, the percentage for 2nd round picks must be 30% tops.
Considering the failure rate, getting a sure-fire starter with Pro Bowl potential at a position of need is a great pick.
“Stefen Wisniewski is NFL-ready with intelligence, strength, durability and the prototype makeup to start immediately.”
“Given his genetic makeup, durability, strength and athleticism, expect Wisniewski to be a top-50 selection who could follow in his uncle Steve’s footsteps as a long-term starter and potential Pro Bowl-caliber lineman.”
April 30th, 2011 at 9:18 am
would love to see Herzlich or Matthews on our roster.
April 30th, 2011 at 9:19 am
Lol last time we took a a center in the secon….his name was Jake grove
April 30th, 2011 at 9:20 am
In my humble opinion, I don’t believe the Raiders look at the draft and place as much value in where they think a player compares on other boards….just their own.
Hence the reach discussion which happens here every year.
If the Raiders think a Safety from Ohio University is a 2nd round pick….that kid is going to be picked in the 2nd….as opposed to trading down etc…
April 30th, 2011 at 9:20 am
Severeraiderz the diff between DHB and Wiz are that Wiz was the best C prospect and DHB was probably the 4th top rated WR. All the higher rated WRs were still on the board.

Browns took TE, Jordan Cameron..
April 30th, 2011 at 9:21 am

DHB pick was terrible because it was in the top 10…so that mistake costs you $$$$$$ and a shot at an elite player like Clay Matthews, BJ Raji or the plethora of wide receivers….
Wizniewski is fine for the #48. Could he have been a reach? Maybe, but such a small one that it is no big deal if the team believes in him.
The bad reaches are the DHB picks….the Mike Mitchell picks…those are the reaches

Branch is the starting SS as of now.
April 30th, 2011 at 9:25 am
It’s also worth noting that Wiz, DVD and Barksdale aren’t the only controversial guys picked yesterday.
I’ve seen reactions on Kaepernick that range anywhere from “THE NINERS GOT A STEAL!” to “He should have gone in the 4th. Why in HELL did they take him in the 2nd, trading up for him no less?!?!?”
April 30th, 2011 at 9:26 am
I have a bad feeling that we will take Gates with our first 4th smh

DTs were not the problem last year.
Rookie MLB, and 2 OLBs that were playing the positions for the first time in the NFL.
Not to mention the horrendous S play early in the year that turned what should be a 6 yds gains into long TD runs.
Case in point, first game of the season where Branch has CJ1K dead in the hole, get shook, and 60 yds later, a TD. If the SS makes the tackle ….
Oh well.

The issue here is the player that Hue Davis wanted. There is no guarantee that Wiz would have been there 10 pick later. I understand that YOU think there were better players out there, but C was obviously established as the #1 need and Wiz was the player they wanted.
I just don’t see the problem.

Our problems against the run are three-fold:
1. No true NT to occupy the G and C…against Kelly and Seymour they are handled with one guy and maybe a chip from another guy, who then goes off to kill McClain on run plays.
2. Safties either take poor angles or can’t tackle.
3. CBs playing press man who have to turn their backs to the LOS when the WRs sell pass….and are often times 10-15 yards down field once they realize it is a run to the outside.
It will be a problem as long as Al is breathing.

Maybe, but Indy and NYG were picking right behind us, Wisniewski would have been a good fit for the Colts who love versatile OL, he could have filled in at either G spot for them and eventually replace the aging (soon to be 36) Jeff Saturday, while the NYG could have grabbed Wis to replace Shaun O’Hara (turns 34 next month) as soon as next year.
Also, just 7 picks later KC selected Rodny Hudson, the other good Center available to eventually, if not right away, replace 37 year old Casey Wiegmann.
So, I’m not so sure we could have traded down and still get Wisniewski.

ALL MLB’s have a blocker assigned to them. The idea that a MLB should be “clean” is ridiculous.
McClain needs to get better at angles and shedding, which he did as the year went on and as he will do with a year of experience.
