Day 3 coming up

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Saturday, April 30th, 2011 at 8:55 am in Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders open the third day of the draft with the following picks:

Round 4 (No. 113)
Round 4 (No. 125) from New England
Round 5 (No. 148)
Round 6 (No. 181)
Round 7 (No. 241) compensatory pick

The Raiders dealt their other seventh-round pick, No. 219, to the Patriots as part of the deal which also got them an extra third (LSU tackle James Barksdale) and fourth round pick. Deals can be made with any of these picks except the compensatory pick, which cannot be traded.

Stefen Wisniewski was picked because he is a good player….any references to his uncle should have been discounted or ignored all together

  • J Hill

You lose mad credibility on that…

    Damn!

I’ll get it back by the end of the day, lol!

Lol last time we took a a center in the secon….his name was Jake grove
    ========================================================
And the time before that was Barrett Robbins, who had a pretty good career before he went insane…

  • hellsbells

What about Salas. Big time production, granted it was at Ha

Severeraiderz the diff between DHB and Wiz are that Wiz was the best C prospect and DHB was probably the 4th top rated WR. All the higher rated WRs were still on the board.
    ////////////////////////////////

Mike Poncey was the best Center prospect and Wiz only played a year at C and some had him pegged as an OG. He was not the top guard and some people had O’Dowd ahead of him at center….I didn’t

  • SnB Production

DHB pick was terrible because it was in the top 10…so that mistake costs you $$$$$$ and a shot at an elite player like Clay Matthews, BJ Raji or the plethora of wide receivers….

Wizniewski is fine for the #48. Could he have been a reach? Maybe, but such a small one that it is no big deal if the team believes in him.

The bad reaches are the DHB picks….the Mike Mitchell picks…those are the reaches

  • J Hill

Al Davis is all about speed and athleticsm. Tyvon Branch is fast and can hit. He ain’t going anywhere.

    Not saying its right…just saying.

    ——————————————————

    Gotcha.

But at this point, we don’t even know what the plan is for FS. Branch hasn’t even played the position before. Heck, it could be Jeremy Ware for all we know.

Branch is the starting SS as of now.

  • RaiderDuck

It’s also worth noting that Wiz, DVD and Barksdale aren’t the only controversial guys picked yesterday.

I’ve seen reactions on Kaepernick that range anywhere from “THE NINERS GOT A STEAL!” to “He should have gone in the 4th. Why in HELL did they take him in the 2nd, trading up for him no less?!?!?”

  • severeraiderz

I have a bad feeling that we will take Gates with our first 4th smh

  • Dakota

Take Cannon…worth the risk with a big payoff in one year. Otherwise take a WR….preferably one with good hands and no injury concerns….I don’t care how fast they are.

  • hellsbells

Pouncy only played center for one year also. Just saying.

  • J Hill

We will have two 3-techs up the middle,

    ——————————————————

    Ok, I’ll bite, lol.

DTs were not the problem last year.

Rookie MLB, and 2 OLBs that were playing the positions for the first time in the NFL.

Not to mention the horrendous S play early in the year that turned what should be a 6 yds gains into long TD runs.

Case in point, first game of the season where Branch has CJ1K dead in the hole, get shook, and 60 yds later, a TD. If the SS makes the tackle ….

    Oh well.

i prefer second round picks to first…you get players that aren’t far off in talent for a much cheaper price. Teams are built in the middle rounds, this is what we are taking for granted.

  • J Hill

Remember all of the calls that were coming in Day 1, do you not think that were getting a lot of calls with Daquan Bowers and Ijalana still on the board on day 2???

    ——————————————————-

    I have no idea.

The issue here is the player that Hue Davis wanted. There is no guarantee that Wiz would have been there 10 pick later. I understand that YOU think there were better players out there, but C was obviously established as the #1 need and Wiz was the player they wanted.

I just don’t see the problem.

  • Guy

Most draft sites have Pouncey as a guard prospect

    ////////////////////////////////////

He was beat out by his future pro bowl brother in the competition. He also played in the SEC and played better than Wiz II against better comp.

  • Dakota

Our problems against the run are three-fold:

    1. No true NT to occupy the G and C…against Kelly and Seymour they are handled with one guy and maybe a chip from another guy, who then goes off to kill McClain on run plays.

    2. Safties either take poor angles or can’t tackle.

    3. CBs playing press man who have to turn their backs to the LOS when the WRs sell pass….and are often times 10-15 yards down field once they realize it is a run to the outside.

It will be a problem as long as Al is breathing.

Like i continue to say, i dont mind us picking Wiz II, i just dont like the spot. He had a 3rd round grade according to most and would have been there in the latter part of the second.
    ——————————————

Maybe, but Indy and NYG were picking right behind us, Wisniewski would have been a good fit for the Colts who love versatile OL, he could have filled in at either G spot for them and eventually replace the aging (soon to be 36) Jeff Saturday, while the NYG could have grabbed Wis to replace Shaun O’Hara (turns 34 next month) as soon as next year.

Also, just 7 picks later KC selected Rodny Hudson, the other good Center available to eventually, if not right away, replace 37 year old Casey Wiegmann.

So, I’m not so sure we could have traded down and still get Wisniewski.

  • hellsbells

He could not even make a shot gun snap. He will play guard.

  • Dakota

    ***safeties***

    Rodney

  • hellsbells

Mayock has Dt from ND as a late 5th rounder.

  • http://0 Bob Marley

Now get ready for 4.3 forty speedsters Taiwan Jones (RB) and Ricardo Lockette (WR) as our 4th round picks.

  • http://raiders.com A.B. Paine III

Maybe the Raiders will draft a punter in the fourth?

  • hellsbells

More I read on Salas the more I like. Could be the move the chains guy. Nice hands.

  • Guy

Give me Cannon and Davon House/Greg Jones in the 4th and idc what you do Al

  • severeraiderz

You guys obviously don’t agree with me about Wiz II being a reach and theres no point in arguing about it anymore. We all hope that he justifies his draft position. He played Guard last year and was good enough at Center before that to be considered a top prospect at that position and i hope his success continues.

    Propoganda.

ALL MLB’s have a blocker assigned to them. The idea that a MLB should be “clean” is ridiculous.

McClain needs to get better at angles and shedding, which he did as the year went on and as he will do with a year of experience.

I agree with the press coverage part and the DBs having their backs to the ball.

  • hellsbells

    Gates is gone, thank God.

  • Dakota

Never said the MLB should be clean, but it is much easier to shed a FBs block than it is an OG’s block.

I was worried that he would be the pick

  • http://0 Bob Marley

Rod Woodson said we were going to play our CB’s facing the QB more often next season, I believe in a man to man, bump and run as our primary coverage system, but I agree with everyone else, we need to tone it down a notch.

  • hellsbells

    Crap, rams took salas.

Ricardo Lockette is still there….and he’s faster than Gates.

Its’ Chimdi, not a bad pick, experienced Big 10 CB.

  • hellsbells

Another corner. Guess 21 is gone. Did they speed dial this pick in. Think we will pick
Cannon next if he is still there.

  • Dakota

another CB….lmao at those who think Al doesn’t run the draft.

  • Guy

Is this guy any good? hopefully Cannon will be there in 12 picks.

  • ELWAYs TEETH

The pick is in! A Cornerback with a funny name…………we NEVER do that. I bet he’s FAST!

Lockette has nice size and ran a 4.34…Gates ran a 4.31….close enough to the same and no telling what we had them clocked at with our stop watches
