No live chat Saturday, we’ll have a draft wrapup on Monday

Sorry for the late notice, but we’re not going to be conducting a live chat during the final four rounds of the NFL draft.

Instead, we’ll have a live chat on Monday from noon to 1 p.m. that wraps up the Raiders draft. Jerry McDonald will also be reviewing other teams’ draft results as well.

We’ll have draft stories posted after the draft ends later on this afternoon.

    What I’d like to see:

    4. Clint Boling or Davon House
    4. Ian Williams or Jordan Cameron
    5. Nathan Enderle
    6. Brandon Bair
    7. Zack Pianalto

    What will probably happen:

    4. Virgil Green
    4. Mana Silva
    5. Ricardo Lockette
    6. DE/LB/Delaware DB (Bratton or Walters)
    7. DE/LB/Delaware DB

  • centurionWR87

Jordan Cameron/Cameron Jordan is so confusing!

I’d like to see us draft Davon House… he may go a fair bit earlier tho…

I bet we get Green tho ur right… but I’d rather Fannin!

  • armond

i wish we took kendrick ellis instead of DVD. wiz/ elli/ barksdale looks alot better. we need to get some run stuffers upfront. no more cb’s or olineman. get a fb and some playmakers on both sides of the ball. te’s like cameron/green or saunders. dont be surprised to see taiwan jones or even jacquizz rodgers picked up. iwe could use another rb that gives us a different dimension especially if he can return punts and kicks.

  • Buckeyeraider

    YA,
I’d like to see the raiders go after TE Jordan Cameron from USC also. I believe Jerry said they showed some interest in him too. He’s supposed to be a raw but athletic prospect with a basketball background.

I’d like to see em bring in another TE prospect. Miller had some injury concerns last year, and has an uncertain contract situation as well. I hope he gets healthy and reaches a long term deal.

Just in case though, and to push Myers another TE would be wise. There are still some out there too…including Virgil Green and Andre Smith a 270 lb TE from Va Tech who is supposed to be an excellent blocker.

  • centurionWR87

isn’t Ford our returner? He was pretty good last year :D

Love Boling at this stage, but he will probably be snatchd up….Id prefer:

Rashad Carmichael (being picked a little later) to Davon House

Jerrell Powe (as a 5th) to Ian Williams

Nathan Enderele has serious accuracy issues, if you’re gonna go that direction why not take a flyer on Jerrod Johnson who should be fully recovered from the shoulder surgery that dogged him all last year???

“The Raiders obviously differed with any opinions from draft analysts and the like that young Wiz was a smallish zone blocker ill-equipped to deal with the beastly nose tackles prevalent in so may 3-4 defensive schemes.”

    - Once again, the “undersized” argument about Wisniewski is absurd, the kid is 6′3 313.

These are some of the best NFL Centers over the last few years, along with their size:

Jeff Saturday 6′2 296….5 pro bowls
    Shaun O’Hara 6′3 303…..3 pro bowls
Olin Kreutz 6′2 292……6 pro bowls
Nick Mangold 6′4 303…..3 pro bowls
Dan Koppen 6′2 296…….1 pro bowl
Matt Birk 6′4 309……..6 pro bowls

And here are the latest 1st round Centers:

    Alex Mack 6′4 311
    Maurkice Pouncey 6′4 303
    Mike Pouncey 6′5 303

    - Not one of them is heavier than Wisniewski, while some of them are slightly taller, but an inch or two make no difference on a Center’s game.

And those guys don’t play for zone-blocking teams either.

  • severeraiderz

With our second 4th we should pick up Greg Jones….he will come in with a chip on his shoulder. Was supposed to be the best OLB in the FBS last year. Let him and Goethel duke it out

Some stuff from various sites on Demarcus Van Dyke:

Sam Shields came out of nowhere to help the Packers reach the Super Bowl this year.

Can DeMarcus Van Dyke do the same thing as the next corner out of Miami?.

    From the Senior Bowl:

I thought Van Dyke looked really fluid in coverage during the one-on-one matchups. He’s only 168 pounds, but there’s definitely room for growth on his 6-1 frame.

Monday Practice Notes: The strongest performance from a defensive back from the South was contributed by Van Dykel. He was better than expected as he stuck to his receivers, particularly on deep routes.

Tuesday Practice Notes: Fundamentally Van Dyke is terrific as he offers good fundamentals and quickness. Some feel he gets a little high in his pedal. Problem his he’s very slow to react and really shows no instincts.

Wednesday Practice Notes: It was a matter of inches and Van Dyke fell short. Again, technically he’s very good and displays the ability to stay on the receivers hip out of breaks but he’s always literally a quarter step away from making the play.

Analysis: Van Dyke showed enough to get consideration in the middle rounds, maybe even the late part of the third frame. Has skills but just needs to put it all together.

Positive: Physically gifted cornerback who never pulled together a complete game on the college level. Quick-footed in reverse, can flip his hips in transition, and shows a burst of speed.

Physical, will mix it up with receivers throughout the route, and aggressively defends the run. Takes on bigger opponents. Gives effort on special teams, specifically on coverage units.

Negative: Struggles making plays with his back to the ball and slow getting his head around to locate the pass in the air. Possesses a thin build. Adequate burst out of his plant.

Analysis: Van Dyke displayed a variety of NFL type skills throughout his college career and performed well for scouts in the postseason. He has the fundamentals to play for a team at the next level.

Prior to the East-West Shrine Game, Demarcus Van Dyke’s chances of being selected in the 2011 NFL Draft were slim to none.

However, Van Dyke had a very impressive week in Orlando at the Shrine Game, and that performance was impressive enough for Van Dyke to earn a late addition onto the Senior Bowl when Curtis Marsh had to pull out with an injury.

Van Dyke was impressive yet again in Mobile, as he really showed his ability to cover opposing receivers both inpractices and in the game.

    DeMarcus Van Dyke/CB/Miami:

Van Dyke finished up a phenomenal two months with a terrific workout. After a terrific performance at the Shrine Game in January, then a solid showing two weeks later in the Senior Bowl, he gave scouts more to think about with his combine effort.

Van Dyke never ran slower than 4.30 seconds in the 40 then displayed quickness, explosion and balance in the position drills. He’s gone from backup with the Hurricanes last season to potential top-100 pick in the draft.

    Chris in NY

Yeah, Wisniewski was measured at 6′3.3 and 313 with 33 inch arms (8th among interior OL) at the Combine, so that’s official.

“Stefen Wisniewski worked out for scouts as a guard and center, both positions Wisniewski is familiar with from his career in Happy Valley.

Despite a lackluster 40-yard dash, a drill pretty insignificant when it comes to offensive linemen, he did finish in the top 10 in every other individual category including impressive showings in the Bench Press as well as the 3-cone drill.”

  • centurionWR87

@Bob Marley Thanks for the stats! :]

  • http://0 Bob Marley

As far as Joseph Barksdale goes, he started and played well for 3 years at an SEC powerhouse, so the production is there, as well as most of the raw tools like size, long arms and decent athleticism.

Also, many high school stars flame out vs SEC competition, Barksdale didn’t so that tells me he’s got some talent, specially since he used to be a DT and I don’t think he’s been coached properly since he’s an LSU alumni where tons of talented players seem to get lost and never develop according to expectations.

IMO, the kid excelled vs the toughest competition in College and has plenty of tools to compete for a starting job in the right side, a very decent pick.

Here’s a scouting profile that I agree with:

“Versatile player who has only four years of experience at tackle … Legitimate upside. Might just be scratching the surface of his potential and could wind up a better NFL player than he was in college.”

    - Here’s what longtime scout Gil Brandt had to say about the Raiders 3rd round picks:

“Honorable mention goes to the Raiders, who made two good picks in the round: Cornerback Demarcus Van Dyke might be the fastest player in the draft. Oakland traded up to get LSU offensive tackle Joe Barksdale, one of those long-armed guys who seem to do very well in the NFL.”

  • http://0 Bob Marley

    Buckeye

Yeah, the fact that DVD not only blazed his 40 at the combine but also displayed good skills and garnered mostly positive reviews when actual competition was involved at the East vs West and Senior Bowl practices-games is a good sign.

Keep in mind that Mayock said the CB class weakenend considerably after Brandon Harris, so a guy like DVD who is raw but has great, if unrefined, skills was bound to be picked soon afterwards.

Philly, Baltimore, Atl, Miami, Cleveland and Denver all were intrigued enough to work him out, that’s too many teams for a guy “experts” projected as a late round-undrafted free agent, that makes me think he was not going to last much longer.

It wasn’t absurd when many of you guys were making it about Satele 6’3″ 300lbs.

People make the argument about Wiz II being undersized primarily because he was pushed around and man handled by some of the larger DT’s that weren’t pro caliber players too often

  • http://0 Bob Marley

“It wasn’t absurd when many of you guys were making it about Satele 6′3″ 300lbs.”

True, but not me, I always said Satele’s size wasn’t an issue, I used the same argument for him that I’m using with Wisniewski, the best Centers in the NFL are about the same size as Satele-Wisniewski.

  • hellsbells

F Tom Brady. Suck his nuts on your on time. Damn NFL network. Sorry just get tired about hearing he was a 6th round pick. He did bot do crap in college. Not like he slipped or was disrespcted. Pats lucked out.

I like Satele and he was our best OL the last quarter of te season. I like the legacy of the Wiz II pickand he will be a very solid player for the next 10 years, but i don’t see the value there. If he absolutely was our guy, whay not trade back a little and pick up some picks? That’s what smart teams do. We needed guard help much more than center help…we better get Boling in the 4th or Byron Bell in the 5th.

  • RaiderRetribution

    great draft yesterday

Raiders’ Offensive Line has solid players for a decade; Wisniewski at Center, Vehldeer at Tackle, Barksdale at Tackle, Campbell G/T & Loper at G; we will still need a one or two veterans on the line for multiple reasons. I would be okay with drafting a couple more rookies tough, Cannon & Boling.

  • severeraiderz

Wow Jordan Todman is still available…he would be a steal at this point. Would gladly get rid of Bennett for him

  • J Hill

We needed guard help much more than center help…

    ——————————————————-

Do you just not like the Loper signing? He obviously starting with the $ we gave him.

Hue Jackson just said that Campbell is still a G, and you know Al wants to see him play.

Carlisle and Barnes are still here for depth.

  • severeraiderz

Is that even a question? Daniel Loper is not an NFL starting caliber Guard…filling in for a few games doesn’t mean he should be our guy. Clint Boling or Marcus Cannon should be picked at some point.

Can we please draft a FB?!?!?!?!?

Barnes may be gone, he turned down a contract already

  • J Hill

Are you saying you think Loper was given all that $ to be a backup here?

    I doubt that.

  • http://0 Bob Marley

I think I just heard Butch Davis on NFLN say that 65% of players on NFL rosters come from day 3 picks (4th to 7th rounds).

Good thing we still have two picks in the 4th, one pick from 5th to 7th.

Loper will be starting in place of Gallery. He played very well last year. Campbell is starting in our Oline this year and Al will make sure of that.

2 years 3.9 million dollars doesn’t exactly scream automatic starter….Id rather have Boling starting at LG with Campbell or Bell at RG and Barksdale at RT…complete overhaul of our line and we would take some lumps but be better for it in the long run. Thats building a bully.

  • Harder2000

Wiz Jr is a great player who studies the game, watch film and does whatever a coach want of him – a true coaches dream!
That being said, the observations about him being a ZBS guy is NOT wrong, and when you watch the games, it becomes apparent that he has many of the issues with big, strong DT’s and NT’s that has been criticized about Satele! It is not about weight but about strength, and Wiz just isn’t there yet! Dareus overpowered him without effort in games, and all Wiz could do was hope to get him turned a little – same will happen with strong NT’s and dont even dare to think about Suh and Fairley when we play the Lions!
I was wishing for Ijalana and felt we reached a little bit when getting Wiz, especially as i thought he was going to be our G, but as they have decided for him to be the starting C for years to come, it makes a little more sense – they brought in Death Ro to bind the defense together, and they now brought in Wiz to anchor the line!
As i said, the games leave a lot to be desired when plugging him in at C in a powerscheme, but as he is a serious player who will do whatever it takes, i am sure that he will be able to gain the strength needed over time! He will become a solid starter down the road i think, especially if we can get a couple of solid and powerful G’s to play next to and support him! He is intelligent and will definately bring a lot of the treats that are coveted in a Center! All he has to improve is strenth and get a mean streak, then he will pan out good!

Dick Van Dyke was a huge reach as Curtis and House was still available – but he has potential in a year or two! He is not a starter out the gate, and they now it – leads me to believe that they have struck a deal with Awesome One #21!

Barksdale is a good pick, and considering all the tackles that was taken prior, it was a great pick! He is one of the guys with the most upside of all, and if they can make him do what it takes, an i think they can, he will be a great pick! He is big, strong, has long arms and pretty nimble feets plus he has a mean streak that you have to love in a Raider! He will become a quality starter and one of the better steals of the draft!

Pretty good talent left, and Davon house is not off just because of DVD, Jordan Cameron at TE could be targeted, KJ Wright OLB could be interesting and several NT’s are still available.. Would love to see us get Terrence Tolliver i the later rds, big WR! Also, wouldnt be too surprised to see us getting Taiwan Jones, but as we have a good back field i hope it will be for a 5th – doubtful!

Lastly – I really hope we get Cannon, but i think he will go in the 4th, and not sure we’re willing to get him by then!

  • RaiderRetribution

Would like to see us pick K. Hunter, would be a much better all around runningback than either Cartwright or Bennett.

Mr. Cartwright is primarily a special teams player.

Hunter would give us that potential 1200 yards should either or both DMAC or Bush go down.

  • J Hill

I can understand that you would “rather” have someone else starting at OG, but the reality seems to be a bit different.

I agree with AIG and most other posters that Loper and Campbell will be starting on the Oline for the Raiders next year.

It is what it is mayne.

  • RaiderRetribution

I agree Harder, especially now that KC drafted Baldwin, Raiders need to resign Nnamdi!

  • RaiderRetribution

Raiders resign Nnamdi and convert Johnson to safety.

Can anyone tell me what the plan is for FS this year?

Are we really going to move Branch there? Wasn’t he the worst S in the NFL against the pass last year?

Stevie Brown???? I like Stevie Brown, but talk about a HUGE gamble.

  • aig-raiders

Having seen 2 members of my family go through cancer, that dude Mark Huirzlich LB from Boston College is one tough mofo. Watch New England picks him late today and turn him into a monster.

Really like Toliver and he has 1st day talent…would love for us to take Cannon, he will slip because of his illness. Al is usually good at picking up those typed of guys but the Vikes, Niners, and Pats have a lot of picks left so they can afford to take a risk

  • Harder2000

No doubt RaiderRetribution – think about the division this year: Jackson, Thomas and Baldwin, all have a huge starting WR, this time for a whole year! And thats just three, they all have at least one more almost the same size..

  • severeraiderz

I’d rather have Greg Jones than Casey Matthews

  • Harder2000

Agreed Severeraiderz, we might have to get aggressive, but both have a special talent! Could use a big, strong fast, reliable WR and Cannon will be a huge steal in a year!

  • J Hill
