Raiders take Chekwa

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Saturday, April 30th, 2011 at 9:52 am in Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders continued to run to speed, rather than run from it, with the selection of Chimdi Chekwa, their second cornerback in four picks.

Chekwa had the third fastest time among cornerbacks at the combine at 4.4.

Chekwa’s overview at NFL.com: Chekwa lacks the measurables to line up against a number one receiver in the NFL, but he has the skills to develop into an effective corner in sub packages. He is a smooth athlete that shows the hip fluidity to be solid in both man and zone coverage. He also flashes the ability to close quickly and break up passes on underneath routes. He does not have the explosiveness to mirror faster receivers and takes too long to fill in run support despite being a willing tackler. Overall, Chekwa is fluid enough to cover slot receivers and should be a Day 3 pick.

Can any of these guys play FS?

    Jeremey Ware is my choice.

Hopefully the next pick is a another CB.

  • Dakota

That is 4 CBs in the last two drafts….bye Nnamdi. Gotta love AL, he spends years and years and pick after pick searching for guys like Woodson and Nnamdi….and then once he finds them he allows them to leave and begins the search all over.

    Insanity.

  • CMon Man

Raiders should just give Nnamdi his $5 billion. Its clear that Al values first and foremost cornerbacks…so skip all the drama and wasted draft picks and just give the guy his money.

This is what I am afraid of….drafting 1000 corners looking for the next Brown, Hayes, Asomugha

  • SharkCatcher

Cj..routt.dvd..madden ware chipmunk…who doesn’t make out of training camp?

  • http://0 Bob Marley

Let’s start with the different takes on Chimdi:

    “Strengths:
Elite speed; has the athleticism to quickly recover from mistakes.

A tough corner who isn’t afraid to get physical with bigger receivers.

A willing tackler. Does a nice job stepping up in run support.

Very fluid in man coverage; an elite athlete who can turn and run with any receiver.

Tons of experience against top competition; a three year starter who also saw significant playing time as a freshman.

    Weaknesses:

Lacks the elite size to be a dominant shutdown corner.

Overaggressive at times; he’ll bite on fakes in an effort to go for the interception and occasionally gets beat deep.

Doesn’t have great ball skills. Suffered a broken wrist in 2011 Sugar Bowl.

    Comments:

Chekwa lacks the raw skills and size necessary to be an elite prospect, but his speed and athleticism should make him a quality nickel corner at the very least.

Having started for three years under Jim Tressel, you can be confident that he’ll come to camp ready to play a significant role as a rookie.

He’s a very safe mid-round pick and could come off the board as high as the late 2nd round due to his impressive athleticism.”

  • CMon Man

    Why not draft 1000 linebackers…or 1000 defensive tackles….o-line…

But nope…drafting worthless cornerbacks. The secondary doesn’t do jack squat…its all about the trenches

  • marios

Pick Analysis: Al Davis can’t resist a cornerback with speed and athleticism, so the selection of Chekwa is a sensible one. He is very talented cover man with great natural physical tools. Although he will need some time to develop, his athleticism and upside make it a worthwhile pick at this point of the draft.

If he is a good player for the 4th round and a need pick why do they have to comment on Al’s love for speed? It gets annoying

  • CMon Man

Just a bunch of John Bowie’s

  • Dakota

I hope Jackson didn’t really think he would be running the draft…..told you he might be in for a surprise if he really did believe that lol.

    Another one:

    Chimdi Chekwa Scouting Report

    Strengths:

+ Decent height and long arms to break-up passes

+ Outstanding speed that translates into games; can run with the fastest receivers in the NFL

+ Tough; a willing tackler in run support

+ Will be able to make a contribution on special teams

+ Improved every season in college

+ Smooth in his back pedal and in flipping his hips to turn and run

+ Located the ball better in his senior season and became more of a playmaker

+ Has a decent feel for anticipating pass routes

    Weaknesses:

    - Has a thin build and will struggle to gain more size and strength

    - Is not a strong tackler and at the next level will have more of his tackles broken

    - Average hands to make the interception

    - Average instincts for a cornerback; not a ball hawk

    - Injured his wrist in the Sugar Bowl breaking up a deep pass and had surgery; durability is a concern with his lean build

    - Plays too conservatively at times and gives up completions

    Football Character & Mental Make-Up:

    + Self-starter

    + Outstanding student-athlete

+ Driven to succeed; hard worker

+ Takes to coaching; wants to keep improving

+ Outstanding young man; no character concerns

    Chimdi Chekwa Draft Value

    Rating:

    4th Round.

  • Pretty Rick

Looks like the speed demon has come out.

  • hellsbells

Special team gunner also. Not hating this pick. Rod Woodson going to earn his check.

  • JB

Get Marcus Cannon – he’d be a real steal at this point in time.

  • hellsbells

Agreed JB. Also a good PR move.

  • ELWAYs TEETH

Awesome name, great speed……….Let’s hope he’s a great shutdown corner. It’s just a 4th round draft pick. We still have another 4th round pick. At least they didn’t take him in the 2nd round.

Eagles are going to take Cannon.

repost: Guess those that saw him were impressed. In 2010 Chekwa was named a first team All-American by the FWAA and College Football News. FWAA is Football Writers Assoc of America. RHAA (Raider Haters Assoc. of America)

  • http://raiders.com A.B. Paine III

I bet anything this next pick will be a WR.

  • CMon Man

Taiwan Jones is still on the board….

Wiz is a good pick and will contribute….Al is going to town his way with the rest of the picks..

Again, how many defensive backs does a team need? 4 CBs in the last 2 years…..

Raiders will be drafting 2 or 3 CBs every year till they find another Nnamdi..

Chris Johnson has to step up big for this team…otherwise the Raiders will never draft an NT

  • hellsbells

Do they not talk about our picks on purpose. Thank god for the Internet, or Al Gore.

  • marios

    Eagles pick a kicker

    Cannon or Greg Jones!

  • http://0 Bob Marley

    Positives:

“Athletic college cornerback with the physical skills necessary to start in the NFL.

Quick flipping his hips off the line, mixes it up with receivers throughout routes, and displays a burst of speed bearing down on the play.

Easily runs with opponents anywhere on the field, works hard to break up throws, and is a solid open-field tackler.

Voluntarily comes up the field to defend running plays and screens and throws his body around the action.”

    Negatives:

“Bites on play-action passes, gets caught out of position, and is late reacting to the action. Does not do a good job positioning himself against opponents to make a play on the ball. Looks confused at times and misses assignments.”

    Analysis:

“Chekwa has shown flashes of shutdown ability since his sophomore campaign yet never really put together a complete game. To this point he still remains a better athlete than football player, but his athleticism coupled with a flashes of talent shown in the past make him enticing prospect.”

Yeah, that’s what we’re saying. Team is still lacking run support depth (29th in NFL against the run). And we’re saying that Al is a demented idiot. He won’t live long enough to see guys like this develop, if they develop. What a moron.

I hope Jackson didn’t really think he would be running the draft…..told you he might be in for a surprise if he really did believe that lol.

    ********************************************************

Hue Jackson has said publicly that Al Davis runs the draft, and that he makes all the picks.

I don’t know where you got the idea that Jackson thought he was running the draft, but it wasn’t from Hue Jackson.

We’re losing Nnamdi. Chris Johnson is the most experienced corner outside of Stanford Routt. We have two second-year corners aside from that. We get good value with Chekwa, and a guy that could be very good in Van Dyke, and all some people want to do is complain.

Four and five-receiver sets are very common in the NFL right now, in case you haven’t noticed. You have to have corners to cover those receivers.

Al did a good job addressing the offensive line, and he also recognized that he has needs in the defensive backfield so he addressed that, too.

Stop being so stereotypical in your evaluation of who we’re drafting and try to understand that these are need picks.

  • http://0 Bob Marley

    At least he’s smart.

“Chimdi, the only OSU football player who majors in accounting, made the Big Ten’s all-academic team and graduated in December.

While a student, he would study at traffic lights and recite concepts learned in class while on his way to football practice.

“I don’t know if I would have this drive to succeed academically if not for my parents,” Chimdi said. “They want to see me graduate with a good GPA.”
