TE Richard Gordon is sixth-round pick

Miami tight end Richard Gordon is Oakland’s sixth round pick, No. 181 overall.

Gordon visited the Raiders, according to the National Football Post, has started just 10 games in his Miami career and has a history of shoulder injuries but has a fastest time of 4.66 in the 40-yard dash and a track background in high school.

He caught 10 passes for 60 yards and has returned a punt and a few kickoffs.

The following is a report by Sporting News analyst Russ Lande:

Gordon is a four-year player & first-year starter at TE for the Hurricanes in 2010. He also contributes some on special teams. He has good size & arm length with some definite growth potential to develop for the position at the next level. He is a very good overall athlete with good speed, quickness, & agility in his play. He generally aligns as a blocker in their unbalanced formation. He is more involved in their run game, than in their pass game. He is a good position & sustain run blocker along the LOS. He shows flashes of being an
excellent finisher to the whistle. He is equally effective on the play side, as he is on the backside. He also does a good job of sustaining his blocks on the perimeter & at the 2nd level. As a receiver, he shows good quickness in his release, body control & balance in his routes, & separation quickness from M/M coverage by a LB. He has inconsistent hands & concentration with very little career production. He is primarily an outlet & underneath option, although they will try to hit him down the seam on occasion with little effectiveness.
He does not possess great elusiveness in his RAC ability. Overall, he merits strong 5th round draft consideration as a developmental #3 TE & special teams player. He has the ability to become a solid #2 TE with time, but lacks the physical & athletic upside to ever develop into a quality starting player at the NFL level. He reminds me most of former Spartan Kellen Davis [5th round-#158-CHI].

REgardless of philosophy…I think we can all agree that you can’t be successful with a 29th ranked run defense unless you have an offense that is putting up 30+ per game

i just dont like that we didnt take advantage of the dline depth in this draft. if we took ellis with one of the 3rd rndrs i’d be okay.

I don’t know what’s going on with this draft. Someone please explain.

  • noteasilyimpressed

OK whiners & complainers, let’s see what else you can come up with for THIS pick….

  • Guy

And the Giants took Greg Jones

  • Harder2000

“Gordon’s career has been somewhat disappointing. He’s caught just four passes, despite being given several chances for playing time.” Hahaha, thats great! He is apparently a blocking TE, but this seems weird! ALL has him as a FA, and Virgil Green who is a 2/3 rd TE and a willing blocker is still available.. Just dumb!

  • UCLA Raiders

AD cares most about CB position. He must have been beat up as a child in Bronx by a bad DT ’cause he’s still running away from DTs!

  • Harder2000

“University of Miami tight end Richard Gordon has visited the Oakland Raiders, according to a league source with knowledge of the situation. The 6-foot-4, 265-pounder ran the 40-yard dash in 4.66 seconds and bench pressed 225 pounds at his campus Pro Day workout. He has posted a 32 1/2 inch vertical leap and a 9-1 broad jump. Gordon has dealt with shoulder injuries in the past. He’s known as a strong blocker and special-teams contributor, returning five kickoffs for 104 yards.” National Football Post – pretty fast for a TE i guess..

  • aig-raiders

Gordon is going to be converted to a LB. You guys just watch.

  • Harder2000

Hope hes a better blocker than Myers who was supposed to be a great blocking TE..

  • CRACKRAIDER

GUY REMEMBER WE STILL HAVE FREE AGENCY TO ADDRESS OTHER NEEDS!

  • severeraiderz

Jerelle Powe has to be our next pick if he’s available

  • Raiders for life

Sounds kind of like Ricky Dudley.

  • aig-raiders

I think Moore will have better hands than our GREATEST DECOY DHB. Something tells me he’ll have a better first year too.

  • illwill

Yo whats up fellas, been following the blog a while just wanted to sign up and give a few tidbits about the U players we drafted (I live in Miami… big U fan):

DVD: He’s been pretty inconsistent his whole career in terms of production. Mel Kiper said he outperformed Brandon Harris (the CB that went to the Texans) his senior year, but that’s completely false. Almost mirroring the situation we have (or had) with Nnamdi, no one would throw to Harris’s WR and DVD would just get picked on all game long. Coverage skills are lacking, instincts are pretty good though. Upside would be that he has a pretty close resemblance to Sam Shields who plays for the Packers… aka if our coaches can coach him up he can be a solid #2.

Richard Gordon (TE) was given several opportunities to be a pass-catching TE but failed pretty hard each time. Towards the end of his Senior year he was our blocking TE and hardly did anything useful with the ball.

The one thing I think should be considered strongly is that the past 4-5 years players have underperformed at the U and over-performed in the Pros thanks to a pretty bad coaching staff. Both these guys have enough potential to be NFL players but it’s gonna depend on the staff to get the most out of them.

    Side note: Taiwan Jones? Really….?!

  • aig-raiders

    Agreed Servere,

Jerelle Powe is an absolute steal at this pick. I watched him down here in Memphis and he’s not bad at all for a big ugly from the SEC.

  • Harder2000

Powe will be taken before we pick next – propably best that way as well, saves us from the dissapointment from taking one more projected FA over him.. Just hope it isnt a division rival, but could see Denver or Dolts pull the trigger..

    THIS DRAFT $UCK$!!!!!!

  • BloodRaider

He was a Top DE coming out of High School

In 2005 was rated the No. 20 overall prospect in Florida regardless of position by Rivals.com and the No. 15 defensive end by Scout.com … Also ranked as the No. 4 prospect in Dade County by the Miami Herald, the No. 56 overall prospect by the Orlando Sentinel, the No. 16 overall prospect by the Tampa Tribune, and the No. 4 defensive end prospect in the South by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution … Chose Miami over Florida, Florida State and South Florida. Coached by Nigel Dunn.

  • http://www.raiders.com/ r8eray

I just hope we have a better free agency than our Draft!

Is this Effin thing over yet…?

  • aig-raiders

Gordon is going to be converted to a LB. There’s the LB you’ve been asking for.

  • noteasilyimpressed

You notice that nobody else picked up Virgil Green either! That SHOULD tell you something….

  • Macho Man Randy Savage

Every year we draft CB, RB, and TE. I wish we could change the trend to OL & DL…

This guy on walterfootball is doing live grades of the draft. Interestingly he has been grading the Raiders picks very high.

My curiosity led me to check out how he is grading our competition in the AFC West – no so good. Its interesting.

    http://walterfootball.com/offseason2011oak.php

Based on this guys analysis, only the Chiefs are having a comparable draft although not as good as the Raiders.

No way. I thought this was a horrible draft by “moron” Al Davis.

Now lets proceed with decimating the credibility of Walter football by all the great fans.

his problem is he ran 4.96 for a LB. I think he is going to be a steal for someone. Dude is ferocious and may work well for a 3-4 D.

  • The Blackhole

Has anyone noticed that Ryan Bartholomew is still on the board?

  • mcskinnnylegs

    mark herzlich = unbelivable steal

  • Guy

I agree with them that Gordon was a terrible pick with Greg Jones, Powe, and Ian Williams on the board. What makes this worse is that Gordon isn’t even projected to be drafted. I’d rather have Virgil green

  • mcskinnnylegs

    4.9 fine with his motor

  • Buckeyeraider

    mcSkinny,

I’m hearing ya. I can’t believe nobody’s drafted this guy yet. He’s an impressive indivdual and well worth the risk at this point. Hell half these late 6th/7th rounders are practice squad fillers, if they even make the squad.

Take a chance Al, trade up and draft this guy. Watching his highlights he looks like a physical player who will knock the piss out of somebody when he gets the chance.

He’s another with a 3rd rd grade who could be a steal here. And what an inspiration.

    Do it Al!

  • Violent Hands

This pick replaces Kalif Barnes {un-balanced line} should do a better job

  • mcskinnnylegs

not to mention ran a 4.9 1 yr(not even)off of kemo and surgery on knee it will heal

  • lefty12

Good draft. We’ve addressed areas of need and got a couple ST/backup players late.

  • marios

    i would like greg mcelroy

  • mcskinnnylegs

i dont think we can trade that laST PICK ITS COMPENSATORY

  • aig-raiders

yeah and Hertz is a really smart player too. Loved his hilite film (i know some of it is from 2008) and he flies at ball carriers and decimate them. If not for his cancer, he’d be a 1st rounder last year.

I watched my brother and mother go through chemo. I have NEVER heard of anyone doing chemo therapy in the morning and on the workout Bike at nite. I saw this today and have nothing but respect for this dude.

  • mcskinnnylegs

WHO SAID GOOD DRAFT? WTF U WATCHING

  • RaiderDuck

@IllWill: Thanks for the insight. Rod Woodson will hopefully be able to get the most out of DVD.

As for Richard Gordon, they probably liked what they saw during the workout. It’s not like any known world-beaters were still on the board.

  • David

Walter football is definitely taking his shots at Al Davis and deservedly so for this continuing to trade future early round picks.

I don’t like him doing that either, unless there’s something I, and everyone else is missing here.

  • mcskinnnylegs

    ITS AN UNBELIVABLE STORY
