Campbell as a leader must come to pass

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Friday, May 13th, 2011 at 1:31 pm in Oakland Raiders.

It seems much of Raider Nation is pleased Jason Campbell has seized the role of team leader during the lockout.

Campbell said in two interviews he had a playbook and was organizing a workout at an undisclosed date and time along with Richard Seymour. Campbell would run the offense, Seymour the defense.

Jackson, a smooth operator when it comes to player relations, has apparently mended any fences that were in need of repair over Campbell’s benching in favor of Bruce Gradkowski last year in Week 2. It was Jackson who went to coach Tom Cable and requested the change, and considering the influence bestowed on the coordinator by Al Davis, the head coach had little choice but to comply.

It’s a nice bit of sleight of hand in that Cable was viewed as a Bruce Gradkowski guy. That may have been true, but the offense belonged to Jackson and he twice opted to have Gradkowski replace Campbell.

Now Campbell is saying all the right things about Jackson and vice versa, a good sign in that the offensive mind and the quarterback should operate as one. There are no more gray areas. In the brief span on April 29 when the lockout was lifted, go ahead and assume Jackson, in addition to shipping a playbook to Campbell, also made it clear what he expected of his quarterback should there be another shutdown.

Campbell, who has never played in the same system for two straight years, is taking Jackson’s request to be a leader to heart.

When asked about the qualities he looked for in a quarterback before the draft, Jackson thought the two most important attributes were leadership and accuracy _ the ability to complete big passes and keep drives alive.

The offseason without the coaches provides a unique opportunity for Campbell to make strides toward being a leader. As far as being the kind of passer Jackson desires, we won’t know that until training camp and the regular season.

Because here’s the deal with Campbell _ he has yet to demonstrate he can carry the Raiders offense on a day when the running game isn’t going well.

His season passer rating of 84.5 last year was the best since Rich Gannon won MVP at 97.3 in 2002, but achieved largely because of five games in which he had rating ranging from 105.5 to 127.9 during which the Raiders dominated on the ground. Oakland averaged 216.4 yards per game in those five games when Campbell’s efficiency was highest (71 of 111 for 1,114 yards, eight touchdowns, no interceptions for a 121.2 rating).

By contrast, Campbell’s rating was 65.7 (123 of 218 for 1,273 yards, five touchdowns, eight interceptions) outside of those five games when Oakland struggled on the ground and needed to control things through the air.

As much as Jackson is talking up Campbell, the fact remains that at the present time, the quarterback is not under contract past this year. Unless they sign him once the lockout ends as a show of confidence, he’ll likely be playing for that contract this year.

There was considerable buzz the Raiders liked Nevada quarterback Colin Kaepernick. Sports Illustrated’s Peter King was in the 49ers’ draft room and reported San Francisco was convinced Oakland would have taken Kaepernick had they not traded up to get him.

Whether the 49ers were correct in their assessment, only the Raiders know for sure. If they were thinking quarterback in the second round, it means they weren’t necessarily sold on Campbell past this year.

The bottom line is Campbell can lead all he wants, but any designs he has on becoming Davis’ next Jim Plunkett will rest with him on occasion carrying the offense with the pass.

The point I’m making is that Al was only consistently successful as an owner for about 15 years, out of a 40 year span. He sucks.

Look at the 2010 draft and the starters. HELLO?? AD. signed off on these guys. Now look at the 2011 draft with 3 more potential starters. AD is kickin azz and takin names.

I’m not sure if he will fit into Al’s scheme. Remember Al’s last press conference? He said he is tired of dealing with head cases. I just don’t think that Vince Young is going to be a Raider. But who knows???

Not really thinking of him for the Raiders. It just amazes me that a guy like that is likely to be on the street. How can a guy like Kevin Kolb be considered a better player? VY is awesome.

Debo, you still think that Jamarcus Russell is great. I’m not sure if I trust your QB judgment. All I can hope for is that JC can step up and the Raiders get a solid 2nd QB. Boller is not a #2.

JR’s “failure” here is greatly exaggerated IMO. Wouldn’t say he’s great, but that he can’t be fairly evaluated with the situation he was handed here. Time will tell. JC will be fine. So will Boller as the #2.

  • Demon Raider

I would be ok with having Bulger as a #2 over Boller. I don’t even really like Boller all that much.

I think Oakland has everything intention of signing both Miller and Bush based off their first and third tenders. In a way, half of me want 2010 rules to apply so we can just tender Miller and Bush, but the other half wants a new CBA instead cuz some of the guys I want us to sign would be RFAs if the season was uncapped.

And on the score that Dowe had over MM34 in the first game, Routt was actually the one who was supposed to be covering him as MM34 was lined up in the end zone and Routt was standing with the LBers. MM34 was yelling at him trying to get him in position to cover Bowe….

But please at least get the 1st one right. Sheez I’m tired of reading the FS needs to have the best coverage skills. ITS “COVER THE FIELD” not coverage skills the FS needs to be bette at!!!! Sheez!

    *****************************

The point wasn’t his coverage skills, but his comfort zone and when he is at his best.

MM34 is clearly at his best, near the line of scrimmage, being physical, attacking the backfield on running plays, and he may be one of our best, if not THE best blitzer.

The few times he hasn’t looked so hot over the last couple of years, is when he is in space, and that Bowe play was just an example. I realize he shouldn’t have been covering Bowe on that one play, but I watched and rewinded it 10 times, and he looked EXTREMELY STIFF trying to backpedal and break on the ball.

MM34 needs to be a downhill player, around the LOS, where he has already proven to be effective, not drifting around 20 yards behind the play forced to move laterally, which he hasn’t proven to be able to do yet.

I’ll take my cue from you, and let the scouts decide on this one.

I do know that 54 combined TD’s to 54 career turnovers and missing games due to injury in 3 of 5 seasons isn’t going to help his FA cause.

I wouldn’t be suprised if VY is one of the last FA QB’s to sign somewhere.

As Hue Jackson said many times, two most important qualities for a QB are accuracy and leadership, which are not VY’s strengths. Even in that SD game you praise, he didn’t complete 50% of his passes.

Agere- that we need to sign Nnamdi he is the best free agent out there and we already have him on the squad. Keep him!

Diagree – DHB will never restructure a first year contract. This may be his only shot right now. He may never develop, he won’t just leave money on the table.

Now a Manning, Brady, Nnamdi! Can do that but not a DHB and you really can’t blame him.

Only if he comes dirt cheap and most likely not then but he will be a better back up then what we have now witht the exception of Grads if he stays.

  • Just Fire Baby

I’m going to start this off by saying I don’t think we should bring back Gradkowski, due to his inability to stay healthy.

I do find it interesting that out of almost all our FA’s to be, the only position we haven’t try to upgrade is the backup QB spot.

Granted when FA comes (if it does) than that will provide more opportunities to do so.

But Satele is a FA, so we draft Wiz. Gallery is gone, so we hurried to re-up Loper and have Bruce Campbell as a potential replacement. Nnamdi more than likely leaving, so we draft 2 DB’s in our first 4 picks.

As far as backup QB, we just have the two guys who Hue Jackson had lower on the depth chart last year than Bruce.

Being that Soup has played 16 games twice out of 6 years, and the Raiders haven’t had a QB play 16 games for us in almost 10 years, we need to bring in someone other than Boller as our primary backup. I would rather have Charlie Frye than Boller as the #2.

  • bcz24

There will be quite a few available QBs in FA. I dont think we bring back Gradkowski because I dont think they want ANY sort of a QB competition. I think you see us sign a Derek Anderson, Matt Lienart, Troy Smith calibur QB to specifically backup Soup.

  • Just Fire Baby

MM34 should be our starting SS, and if Huff doesnt’ come back, than Brown, Eugene and Branch can duke it out at FS.

  • Just Fire Baby

Matt Leinart would make sense, since Al supposedly wanted to draft him originally.

Derek Anderson is probably the best of the bunch you just listed, and has experience as a backup.

VY is kind of a starter or bust type of QB, he doesn’t bring as much value as a #2, doing the stuff that #2 QB’s are supposed to do.

  • bcz24

I think Leinart will end up back in Seattle with Carroll.

I wouldnt mind Anderson coming in to back up Campbell

  • J Hill

I would rather have Charlie Frye than Boller as the #2.

    ——————————————————-

    Agreed.

when asked in a radio interview yesterday if michael huff wanted to stay in oakland he responded “of course i want to stay there”

when al davis was prodded at the head coach announcement about the 30 or so free agents we had to worry about al responded “that number is way off, i don’t know where you get that information but that is not true”

just a hunch but i believe al already has some unspoken deals with his players. al is not as stupid as everyone thinks.

    Corrections are in order:

THE SS has to have better coverage skills than the FS! Who do you think covers the TEs in our division every year1?!?!?!?

I’m tired of reading the FS needs to have the best coverage skills. ITS “COVER THE FIELD” not coverage skills the FS needs to be bette at!!!! Sheez!

    ***

    Terrapin,

    you’re more concerned about TE’s than WR’s?

Tony Gonzalez & Shannon Sharpe aren’t in the AFC West anymore and Gates turns 31 years old next month, trying to overcome MAJOR injuries from last season

Correction: the guy who can COVER THE FIELD should start at FS. Mitchell or Branch. I don’t care who starts where. Chuck B & Rod Woodson will make that determination

VY is a starter in this league, not a backup. As far as the scouts are concerned, they got it right when he went #3 overall. We’ll have to wait and see what they have to say once football comes back.
