Yes, it’s unlikely, but with Bucs having passed, Raiders should pursue `Hard Knocks’

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Monday, May 16th, 2011 at 10:26 am in Oakland Raiders.

Chance of this happening? Zero, or something in the ball park.

But with the news of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers declining an invitation to be featured on the acclaimed HBO series “Hard Knocks” the Raiders should make it known they’re willing to have their training camp turned into a weekly series.

They were reportedly a candidate in March before the Bucs received the offer.

The road blocks are painfully obvious.

The first is the NFL lockout which could stop the show in its tracks for a year.

The next problem is Oakland pretty much operates as a closed shop. A couple of years back, they even took to pinning the media into 20-yard “penalty box” areas after years of allowing reporters to walk freely along the sidelines (staying away from the middle of the two fields where the players congregated).

The Raiders’ love for secrecy is legend.

Add into it the fact that owner Al Davis doesn’t like to be photographed. Media photographers are told not to be zeroing in on Davis, as are rolling cameras, not to mention invited guests. That doesn’t stop an intrepid photographer from firing off a few shots from a long-range lens, of course, but given that constraint, it would make it difficult to chronicle Davis’ visits to Napa. And those visits would be a huge part of the story, given quarterback Jason Campbell’s comments last week about how the intensity increases with the owner on hand in his golf cart.

A lot of those issues can be negotiated, however and the Raiders can have some input into how it would be produced. You never know when Davis will decide to speak, and any time he does, it’s great theater _ some of the best in sports.

The Raiders are struggling with a season ticket base in the 23,000 range last year and the lockout can’t be helping things. I know a guy who threatens to give up his tickets every year. Then every year he tells me, “They got me again.”

This time, it was because of repeated e-mails and phone calls _ the most contact this ticket holder can remember in terms of salesmanship.

This is an organization in need of some national exposure as it promises to get back in the championship chase.

What the Raiders really have going for them is coach Hue Jackson. He dominates training camp unlike any coach since Jon Gruden in terms of being vocal, enthusiastic and energetic. He’ll get on players who fall short, talk trash to the defense. This year he’ll be entrusted with the entire team, which ought to make the performance even better. The camera loves him, and Jackson seems to like to have it pointed toward him.

When Gruden was head coach, he was a favorite of NFL Films, who were often in Alameda and allowed access very unusual to the organization. How did it happen?

Davis left it up to Gruden, and Gruden was secure enough to say yes _ even after a pair of 8-8 seasons.

Jackson has yet to do anything wrong, and he doesn’t seem to be lacking in confidence.

As for the “penalty box,” that was mostly put in place because of a perception that Bay Area media _ or as Warren Sapp termed “the local yokels” _ has been too critical. Some bigger national outlets get to move more freely if they’re considered more friendly or have a relationship with whoever the coach happens to be in a particular year.

If there is an end in sight to the lockout, and the Raiders can sell it, they ought to consider allowing an up close look at Jackson’s “Build a Bully” process.

Word out was that Donovan McNabb won’t land anywhere soon. I wouldn’t mind seeing him come in as a #2 QB and possible mentor for a developmental QB prospect yet to be named.

“come in as a #2 QB and possible mentor for a developmental QB prospect yet to be named”

He could teach them how to wear a wrist band and look cool doing it!

Although I havent been ’sold’ on Campbell, he has started to grow on me with the whole ‘take the bull by the horns’ attitude… It wouldnt be a bad idea to bring in someone who could ‘threaten’ Campbell for the starting position… McNabb could definitely do that! With or without wristband… They shouldve already brought him in a year ago and saved him from the debacle of a team that is the ‘Foreskins’…

  6. Dakota Says:

Yes, Campbell would pout if we signed McNabb.

  7. Raiderbuck Says:

Soounds like a win – win and I think the Raiders should go for it! Al doesn’t come out in the daylight anyway,… Just Sayin’,..

  8. 909RaiderLifer Says:

The chances of getting struck by lightning, after buying the winning lotto ticket are better than seeing the Raiders on Hard Knocks…

That being said, I’ll be first in line to sign up for HBO, IF it were to happen…..

  9. r8eray Says:

    909, thats for sure!

That and True Blood season 3…!!!

    ;)

  10. RAIDER Says:

Al Davis doesn’t allow cameras at training camps because he’s just barely lucid enough to know that his way of running his team is bizarre and embarrassing, and viewers will laugh at not only that, but also how chaotic the environment is.

  11. Al Davis MachoMachoSupremo Says:

Coach Davis needs to use ‘hard knocks’ as a propaganda platform and slam the nfl for all the effort they have put forth to keep the Raiders at the bottom of the heap.

  12. r8eray Says:

Amy and the PR Department should take the offer if HBO offers…that would be nice to see what goes on in Napa!

If Donovan McNabb winds up in Oakland you can bet your sweet a$$ he beats out Campbell for the starting job. I dont buy the ‘he is washed up’ crap because of one crappy year in Washington. I watched him play in the game where Vick absolutely torched their defense and McNabb looked fantastic. Its not his fault his defense allowed Vick to hang 59 points on them.

Washington & Cincy should swap McNabb & Palmer imo

    good trade for both teams!

    LOL @ Jerry Mac!

Jackson isn’t Gruden and we’ve yet to see him “dominate” anything as Head Coach of the Oakland Raiders.

    PA,

the Raiders aren’t going to pay McNabb $12 million this year to back up JCamp.

He’d have 6 more Pro Bowls, 1 Super Bowl appearance and 3 times the pay as our aforementioned “starter”

  19. Silverandblack666 Says:

“Jackson isn’t Gruden and we’ve yet to see him “dominate” anything as Head Coach of the Oakland Raiders.”

I don’t know how many times I have said this exact thing and then get chastised by some delusional fans in here that are ready to CROWN him coach of the year.

Being an OC and then moving to HC are two completely different levels of responsibility.

great post….BTW I have high hopes for Hue Jack but right now thats all it is.

  20. irjonny Says:

can’t see this happening? if the producers at HBO thought like that they would’ve never even talked about Oakland in the first place. Al or Amy obviously picked up the phone and had a conversation about it if they were confirmed to be in the running for the series…which they were.

Campbell’s numbers in D.C. would have gotten us in playoffs with our talent. he had no competition there. isn’t it safe to say he does best when not on the hot seat? we have a starter, a serviceable backup whether we like it or not in Boller. now we need what every other team has…a rookie to learn.

  21. Raider E Says:

Jerry said dominate “training camp” in terms of being vocal, enthusiastic, and energy. Jerry was there last training camp wasn’t he?

  22. RaiderRockstar Says:

Willie Gault never had more than 50 catches in a season. Never had a 1,000 yard or 10 TD season either.

But he was a part of the ‘85 Bears team that won the Super Bowl with his 33/704/1 season

    Darrius Heyward-Bey = Willie Gault!

  23. Raider E Says:

And he never said he was Gruden. Jerry said he was Gruden-like in the aforementioned terms dum dums.

  27. Raider E Says:

  29. RaiderRockstar Says:

Being an OC and then moving to HC are two completely different levels of responsibility

    ***

Exactly. the players loved Jackson’s no-nonsense smashmouth approach. He’s a player’s coach. They like his attitude & intensity

    So What?

the players said the same things about Tom Cable & Rob Ryan but those guys didn’t “dominate” in the W/L column

it’s like the kid that talks tough on the playground and mouths off to everybody… one day he’ll piss off the wrong guy and get punched in the face. When he does, he hits the ground like a sack of potatoes and starts crying. Then everybody knows exactly how tuff he really is – not at all

trash talk = waste of time. worthless chatter.

  30. Raider E Says:

DHB is not a Olympian. He can reach the 1 touchdown mark though.

  31. Silverandblack666 Says:

I don’t care how much enthusiasm he has if he doesn’t win more than 8 games next year we will eventually see the overhead projector wheeled out again.

  32. RaiderRockstar Says:

if trash talk makes you a good football coach, hire Mike Tyson after Hue finishes 3rd or 4th in the AFC West next year!

  33. Raider E Says:

I dont believe Jerry was trying to CROWN anyone. He simply wrote that Hue was the most dominate coach the Raiders have had at training camp in terms of being vocal, enthusiastic, etc. Read much?

  34. Silverandblack666 Says:

Who has a more productive 2011-2012 season…Mike Williams (Seahawks) or DHB?

  38. RaiderRockstar Says:

    E,

being vocal & enthusiastic doesn’t make you dominant.

Neither does averaging less than 200 passing yards per game! Neither does benching your best QB 3 times for an injury prone, noodle armed, 3rd string journeyman. Neither does starting brick hands DHB at WR and saying that he’s capable of an 8-catch, 228 yard, 3 TD game!

  39. Silverandblack666 Says:

    Raider E

I had several arguments with people here “not you” about this topic last week.

My comments are not directed at you or Jerry but for the derelicts that will be in here soon claiming that Hue is already coach of the year.

  40. RaiderRockstar Says:

Who has a more productive 2011-2012 season…Mike Williams (Seahawks) or DHB?

    ***

    ray,

do we get to play against Seattle 16 times this year?

If so, I’ll take DHB :P

  41. Raider E Says:

They both suck, but I guess if you add money into each players production, one would have to take Mike Williams all day.

  42. 1eyedpirate Says:

Mcnabb should have been snatched up last year…. It is too late now…. I would take him over Campbell any day but it’s too late now or for at least the 2011 season… I was born in Chicago and know about McNabb very well… The man has been playing at a high level since his high school days where he one the state championship at soldier field and absolutely took over that game…. He is a he’ll of an athlete… Minus last year and he is close to a hall of fame qb… If he gets a ring he will be on the HOF…. But we are stuck with what we got and I hope it’s decent…. If we make re post season it will be due to a stout defense and a he’ll of a running game, while our passing attack will be slightly average…. Just as long as the passing offense isn’t subpar, like the last 8 years I will be happy…. I mean we are do for a 1000 yard recording performance from a reciever…. Who though? Ford or Murphy is who betting on… Unless we sign TO or ochocinco…..Who do u guys think will crack the 1000 yard mark?

  43. Raider E Says:

    Rockstar,

Jerry said, “dominate in training camp.” I am fairly confident you understand that great training camp voices dont win you a Lombardi.

  44. RaiderRockstar Says:

Who do u guys think will crack the 1000 yard mark?

    ***

    1eyedpirate,

    Zach Miller.

We should sign Terrell Owens as a vet mentor type. 2-years $5 million. We need a big body with sure hands that can move the chains on 3rd down. a possession WR that isn’t brittle like Chaz

  45. Raider E Says:

How can we be stuck with what we got at QB when we only have 2 QBs on the roster?

  46. RaiderRockstar Says:

Jerry said, “dominate in training camp.” I am fairly confident you understand that great training camp voices dont win you a Lombardi.

    ***

    E,

Cable & Ryan both “dominated in training camp.”

it didn’t do us any good during the regular season, so why is this point even worth mentioning?

because Jerry Mac is a Hue Jax homer like most other Raider fans, despite what proof was in the pudding last year

  47. Raider E Says:

We wont have a reciever eclipse the 800 yard mark and you can forget about a vet FA. Pipe dreams. If we win it will be because we will have the #1 rushing attack and Top 5 pass rush.

  48. Raider E Says:

    Rockstar,

Now I see what your saying….Let me know it then lol.

  49. RaiderRockstar Says:

How can we be stuck with what we got at QB when we only have 2 QBs on the roster?

    ***

I’m assuming he means that Jason Campbell is the unquestionned starter and Kyle Boller is the #2.

the #3 guy rarely matters unless your HC plays musical chairs at the QB position or the top dawg gets injured and the #2 stinks

if the Raiders re-sign Charlie Frye, Jeff Otis or Josh McCown as 3rd string QB it won’t even make the paper. Same thing with Andrew Walter, Tui or Losman

the Raiders will add 2 more camp arms, if we ever have a training camp. probably 1 vet that nobody else wants and 1 undrafted rookie free agent *** not a 6x Pro Bowler that is due $12 million in 2011!

  50. Raider E Says:

Hues’ so called domination of last years camp did do us a 3 game improvement good if thats what we are attributing it to. Still not good enough in my eyes.

  51. KoolKell Says:

Anybody see Ochocinco try to ride that Bull? Too funny.
I give him credit for climbing on top of that emffer though. ;-)

  52. Raider E Says:

    LOL that was good.

Did you know that a 50 year old man made over 5,200 free throws in a row. Why can’t guys shoot more than 60% from the line is beyond me?

Of the 71 players who have taken freethrows thus far in the NBA playoffs 69 of them are shooting better than 60%….only two guys were under 60% Nene and Josh Smith.

So your an athlete because you watch basketball?

I wonder how good your 12 ounce slam dunk is or your quick slant to the bag of chips or your fast break to the bathroom to rub one out.

Raiders needs a possession wide receiver who knows how to get open against different types of coverages. Chad would surely be better than what we have here now. Agree?

And how is moving the chains a 49er thing? You an move the chains without dinking and dunking

They’re showing pictures of the Giants fan who got knocked out at Dodger stadium. In the pictures they’re showing now, he looks like some kind of steroid freak! The ones they showed beforehand, he looked like this innocent, meek guy. I never saw these pictures they’re showing today. He looks like the kind of guy who could have brought this on himself.

There have been countless beatdowns at Angels stadium. Here’s one account in particular

Let’s put it this way, Raider E. If jealousy is what motivates me to come here and bash Al, as you would put it, why aren’t I at Steeler, Packer, or Patriot blogs bashing their respective ownerships? I have a lot more reason to be jealous of those owners.

  138. RAIDER Says:

The pictures I saw of him today, he looks like a ‘roid freak who lives for brawling. I wonder why I hadn’t seen those photos beforehand. No doubt. To paraphrase Randy Moss, something is “fishy” about the way the media has approached this incident.

Then, in Los Angeles, they have billboards offering rewards for information leading to the suspects. With all of the victims of violent crime in LA, many of them children, they expect the whole city to rally around some out of town meat head who was probably starting funk and asking for a fight? It’s ridiculous

same time tho, there’s an element of LA fans that take it too far and if this incident highlights that and things are done to curb it, it may have a good result. It is definitely fishy tho
