An all-hands-on-deck ticket plan

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, May 18th, 2011 at 8:43 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Leave it to Amy Trask to figure out a way for Raiders employees to spend their down time.

The Raiders CEO announced to club employees March 11 they would all become part of the ticket-selling department.

Sounds crazy on its face, but it beats being out of a job, furloughed or taking a pay cut.

It goes like this _ sell either season tickets or suite tickets (single game or annual) to reach or exceed 10 percent of your monthly salary and it’s all good. A person making $60,000 per year would need to sell $500 worth of season tickets per month. Trask points out that’s about two season tickets. The lockout has gone on for 10 weeks, but employees have until the first preseason game to meet their goals.

When I spoke to her today, Trask wouldn’t say what happens if someone doesn’t meet the quota, choosing instead to focus on the positive and believing that it was a “can do” plan.

Here’s a link to a Sports Digest lead I filed for Thursday’s Bay Area Newsgroup papers.

“To my knowledge, no one else is doing this,” Trask said. “that’s not to say it’s not happening somewhere in the world. I’m just not aware of it.”

On the first day of the plan Trask said an assistant coach sold five club seats. She declined to name the coach, and also declined to say whose idea it was to have everyone in the building _ including Trask and coach Hue Jackson _ become a seller for “new buyers.”

If it all seems to be a bit of a cluster-you-know-what, with no specific selling territories and sellers potentially working the same clients, the organizational philosophy, Trask said, is one of cooperation.

“There are a handful of people that may be intimidated by this, but what we’re trying to do is work with them and say, `Let’s help you accomplish your goals,’ ” Trask said. “How do we give you the tools and resources you need? Maybe someone has a great lead from their church or gym. We say, IL< give the lead to the ticket sales department, they’ll help you close that.”

The Raiders declined to make any assistant coaches available, but that didn’t stop defensive coordinator Chuck Bresnahan from talking to USA Today. Bresnahan apparently wasn’t the guy who sold the club seats, but wasn’t worried about meeting his quota.

“I’ve got to sell millionaires in a room every day to run and crash heads,” Bresnahan said. “So this is easy.”

The Raiders averaged just 46,431 in eight regular season home games last year with a season-ticket base of approximately 23,000, so there are plenty of seats available.

    Priest,

IMO, QB is a HUGE question mark going into the season. And since JC has no contract beyond this year, who’s to say the powers that be want this guy beyond this year? He’s clearly on the on a 1 year try out this year, and the fall back plan is Kyle Boeller?

    That’s why.
    @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

It’s a huge question mark because of the WRs we’re going to trot out there. Without big improvement there, no guy is going to come in here at QB and excel. If there is a training camp, I want Chaz sitting in a lawn chair the whole time taking “mental reps”.

  • Dakota

Just passing on what is said about Kolb…

“Kolb has a tendency to check down early in his progression, the game he replaced Michael Vick in against the Washington Redskins is a perfect example of that.”

“He checks down more than Sanchez and that is saying a lot.”

Weaknesses: Kolb is not as good a passer as his talent suggests. While it is important for a quarterback to be willing to dump off passes to backs, he seems to do this way too fast — in fact, he almost seems to prefer this option instead of holding on to the ball and waiting in the pocket for routes to develop so that receivers can get open down the field. He has a habit of staring down his primary target and this allows the defender to break quickly on the ball too often. He does not seem as comfortable in the pocket when it starts to get squeezed. Kolb is not nearly as effective as when the pocket is clean and pressure-free (that’s true for all QBs, but Kolb’s discomfort is much more evident).

“Last week, Kolb was criticized for hitting his check down receiver too often and not looking down field…”

“NFL Network’s Michael Lombardi agrees, and notes that Kolb checks down way too much, taking receivers like DeSean Jackson out of the game”

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports a group of Oakland Raiders and Atlanta Falcons players are talking about holding a scrimmage next week in the Atlanta area. Oakland defensive tackle Richard Seymour is footing the bill for a large group of Raiders to work out next week on their own in Atlanta at a sports performance complex in Georgia.

As long as DHB wears a Raider uniform the #1 pick is not necessary. As long as JaMeatball is ingrained in my memory the #1 pick should be traded.

    Robert Gallery to the Patriots!

  • J Hill

    Dakota,

Do you think the fact that he was coming off a concussion had anything to do with how he played those 3 games?

Do you think he might have come back to early with all the Vick chatter going on?

  • J Hill

    Robert Gallery to the Patriots!

    ——————————————————-

They continue to get out trash, lol.

I wonder how long Bradylocks abd Belichick will put up with the falst starts, holding, and 4 games missed because of a toe nail injury.

  • Dakota

I don’t know Jhill, but when I see a bunch of info on a guys problems it raises major red flags.

If we had Gruden as HC I would say go for it….but I don’t think Kolb would be the right fit right now….that is not an endorsement of Campbell, just don’t think Kolb is the answer.

  • J Hill

At the end of the day, we have all of our eggs in a QBs basket who is not signed past this year, AND whose skills are constantly questioned.

Quite simply would you rather have Kolb, or a QB we can get in next year’s draft which will be no higher than somewhere in the mid teens?

  • J Hill

Is there another QB out there that is available?

    No to McNabb and VY!!!!!

The minute Hue gets pissed at Campbell again, all we have is Boeller, lol!

We HAVE to upgrade that scenario.

  • priesttj

Jhill he needed an excuse and you provided it. LOL

I’m not saying the kids a bad QB but how do we know how good he is? I have heard all the HYPE I haven’t seen the production. Yet you want to give a 1st for him why?

How do you know you can’t get someone better at any position. We don’t even know if Camp is what Hue thinks he is. Now if we’re talking a 2nd or a 3rd I’m all for looking into it. But so far he’s just hype.

  • Dakota

Never know, Al might get lucky with next year’s #1 pick (or he might be out of the picture by then God forbid)….and at least we know what we have in Campbell….better the devil you know etc…who knows what QB options we will have after this season, but gambling the pick on Kolb who has major question marks of his own? I don’t like it.

  • priesttj

So you’re willing to pay a 1st for Camp’s backup when we only paid a 4th for Camp? It doesn’t make sense I would much rather get Mcnabb for half that.

  • Al Davis MachoMachoSupremo

Jhill you guys just haven’t been through what I’ve been through with refs…….i’ll just put it that way.

Just exactly what do you mean by that?

  • Al Davis MachoMachoSupremo

We had so much success with getting rid of our #1 pick this year I wouldn’t mind seeing that occur every year. Coach really has to be smart about that.

  • J Hill

So you’re willing to pay a 1st for Camp’s backup when we only paid a 4th for Camp?

    ——————————————————

Well it could very well end up that we paid a #1 for a quality starter, and a 4th for his backup.

I think we can kinda see alredy what wil be available next summer.

    Gerrard
    Campbell
    Orton/Tebow/or Quinn
    possibly Flacco

Of Jamarcus Russell is still out there.

  • Dakota

Getting rid of first round picks is bad business in the long term. Ask the Redskins.

  • Just Fire Baby

Satele is going to go somewhere and start, as is Bob Gallery. Same will probably hold for Carlisle

Veldheer was an all-rookie player to boot, so the theory of last year being a bad NFL O-line is just that, a theory.

Maybe the sum of the parts is not as good as the individuals, but we had legitimate NFL starters (who had already or will start somewhere else) all over that line.

  • aig-raiders

You already know JC CANNOT get it done. Even Jerry finally admitted JC couldnt carry our team last year when we needed him, You dont need to be a rocket scientist to figure that one out. Boller has never thrown for 300 yds in his entire career, and he he had plenty of starts in his career. Boller and JC are not the answers. I’ll take Kolb, McNabb and VY anyday over the 2 clowns we got in JC and Boller.

    ———————-

Sure it is bad business for 31 other teams but for the Raiders normal business logics do not apply. Al hasnt done crap with our first round picks in years. DMAC is the only exception so far. For every DMAC, we get the overreach like DHB, JR and a long list of failed first rounders by Al Davis, I’ll take Seymour over a #17 pick anyday.

  • Dakota

Well I don’t think Campbell is the long-term answer, but replacing him with an unknown guy who has questionable abilities in Kolb, or a guy that is a mental midget and can’t pass in Young, or a guy who would just mail it in for a paycheck in McNabb just doesn’t make sense at this point.

Campbell already knows the system and a new Qb will be at a big disadvantage with the truncated offseason they will have to deal with this year.

Keep Campbell this year, save our first round pick and hope some better option pops up next offseason if Campbell doesn’t show major improvement.

  • DKnight007

Sounds like a proactive plan by the Raiders to increase their season ticket sales, which they need badly. 23K base with season ticket holders? Gawd.

Only old man Al Davis and his cronies are to blame for that and no one else!

Picking another CB ahead of a bloodline legacy player like Casey Matthews in the 4th round is one of those types of decisions that pisses off the fanbase and makes them not want to buy season tickets. Of course….stupid picks like DHB and the signings of J Walker, D Hall, and the dumb pick of J Russell and giving these players big time money, is one of the many reasons why Raider Nation isn’t going to spend their hard earned money on season tickets.

I hear you AIG, and I somewhat agree, but teams don’t trade great players for draft picks unless they are old like Seymour….I’ll take my chances that maybe Al can get it right once in a while in the first round over trading picks for guys other teams no longer want.

  • aig-raiders

VY has shown that he can carry his team. I dont rate VY or McNabb high either. I just know they are both a whole lot better than the stiffs we got in JC and Boller. Any successful QB in this league carry with him a cocky “I’ll carry us” attitude. JC doesnt have that and he will never be successful even though he has all the physical tools.

IMO, our Oline was lousy at the beginning of the year and it certainly got better by the end of the year. We have the #2 rushing attack in the league and that didnt happen by accident. DMAC was a big reason but his rushing numbers were not league leaders.

    Dakota,

Look at the Titan’s win/loss record in 2009 with Kerry Collins and VY. Same set of players including CJ under Collins but they vastly improved their W/L with VY back there. VY has carried his team and the data supports that. Headcase? Heck yeah but dude carried his team in college to a national championship and turned the Titans 2009 season around after that 0-6 start under Kerry Collins.

The Raiders wanna make that push to being a contender year and year out. Its gonna have to start up front and guard is vital now with these youngins on the outside and in the middle

Bruce Campbell? Come on man he needs to be over at RT competing with Barksdale. I cant have 4 young guys and a journeyman scrub like Loper holding down our line.

  • DutchRaider77

One penality that pissed me off was the Chris Johnson going to the kneee to “thank god” penality after a interception. The refs blew the call…

If Robert Gallery goes to the Pats, you really think they are going to give him the contract that he wanted from the Raiders. The Pats Logan Makins last year.

“But you have to consider that this guy is playing with zero running game in Philly.”
You do realize that the McCoy rushed for over 1080 yards last year and the Eagles managed almost over a 100 rushing yards per game. Also McCoy has one of the highest YPC average?

I would be higher on McCoy if he did not have tremendous talent around him in WRs, TE and RB.
