Camp Seymour notes
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Tuesday, May 24th, 2011 at 11:28 am in Oakland Raiders.
Some highlights from correspondent Ben Beitzel at the Raiders’ passing camp at Competitive Edge Sports in Duluth, Ga.:
– A hand count came up with 34 players at the workout including at least three members of the rookie draft class _ center Stefen Wisniewski, cornerback DeMarcus Van Dyke and tight end Richard Gordon participated in workouts of moderate intensity.
– Bruce Campbell, a right guard last year, continued to play on the right side during 7-on-7 drills.
Beitzel is filing a story to run in Wednesday’s Bay Area News Group papers and will pass along more info that I’ll relay a little later . . .

Say what you want about some of the characters that have come out of that program; they produce football players there, and those guys show up to play ball.

what’s up, doc?
I like living out in the country. I got no probs with city folks, either. I was one for about 25 years!
I don’t miss the noise, traffic, polution or crime of living in the city. It was cool go see a movie or eat at a restaurant without the 45 minute drive each way though

I’ve heard rumors of him snatching up Gallery’s old LG spot, but that may be a challenge with no coaching interactions this offseason
Sounds like he’ll compete for the RG job with Cooper Carlisle unless we hear something different from the Mushroom Man

Defensive players?! How about EVERYONE who liked football you classless morons!
Its actually a pretty good way to ruin Vegas if you think about it and unduly influence outcomes. what a massive crock of sh*t. This is the result of Tagliabue selling off the game to corporate A holes who never played.
All about the money, protecting players aka “assets” and warding off future lawsuits from players who will retire.
It is (or at least was) a contact sport. Too much money has ruined the game WE helped create.

364 days ago Raider Nation was gripping over Richard Seymour’s absence at Oakland’s mini-camp. The defensive lineman hadn’t signed his franchise tag and some wondered if he even wanted to be a Raider. What a difference a year makes.
Talking yesterday on SiriusXM radio’s Blitz with Adam Schein and former Raider QB Rich Gannon, Seymour said he was destined to play in Oakland.
“Sometimes I think to myself, I was born to be a Raider,” Seymour said. “As a defensive lineman, you know just the attitude and mentality of the silver and black, the fans…(there’s) no other team I’d want to play for than the Oakland Raiders.”
But Seymour knows that sentimentality doesn’t help get to the playoffs and if the Raiders want to return to glory, the well documented poor run defense has to improve.
“That’s something we have to stop, first and foremost, definitely a thorn in my side,” Seymour said. “We’re one of the most talented groups in the league. When you talk about talent, we have it. We just have to do the little things, and grind it out play after play.”
So while Seymour and some of his teammates convene in Atlanta next week for non-contact drills, conditioning and team bonding, he knows the work they put in now will carry over to the Fall.
“We gotta build during this time, to define what we’ll be all year,” Seymour added

No, Al Davis prizes his cornerbacks. I dont think he will convert Routt at all. Branch is going to FS this year and Mitchell will go to SS. My hunch is Van Dyke will start from day one. It will be a typical Al Davis move to start him.

Pretty sure Campbell said that no potential free agents would be attending.
As for who is the most important for next year, I would have to say Routt, Veld, JC, Romac and DMac are pretty key as well as DHB. Cant win with DMac hurt, and the other guys all need to step up their production

I agree that most years you would be correct. I believe with all the uncertainty going on in the league right now it changes things. Al did sign Big Sey, Routt etc; as priorities. I don’t know if that means for sure that Huff is out of the plans. regardless MM34 will get some decent playing time. I wouldn’t be shocked if a labor deal did not get done until late and there would be minimal free agency. Then guys like Z. Miller will stay Raiders for at least one more year.

He absolutley opted out, He knew he had oppurtunity to get paid. He had a pretty good season and was in negotiations with the Raiders about a new contract until the Kam Wimbley rule screwed things up. I believe he was part of the Raiders plans. Perhaps because of the lock out it may mess things up, hence drafting more DB’s.

There was a change made to the “launching” rule too. A player will be considered to have launched himself if he leaves his feet prior to contact in order to spring forward into another player and using “any part” of the helmet.

CJ hits better than Routt. Got just as much speed and aint that far away from Routt either. He certainly had a better 2009 than Routt and Routt had a better 2010. CJ certainly has more football instincts than Routt. Routt is still a track star trying to play football. He is absolutely useless over the middle and admitted as much throughout his career.

CJ37 peaked in 2009. He will be lucky to be a nickle back for his pay. Routt is evolving, He is better at man coverage than Routt. So what If CJ37 is a better hitter? He’s a DB not a LB. Regardless of my opinion Al just paid Routt handsomely and will be a starter. CJ37 is far from guaranteed anything. Ecspecaily with all the young hungry DB’s waiting in the wings. (Not only are they cheaper but MUCH younger.) I DVR all the games and I liked what I saw out of Routt, He is only going to get better, CJ37…Not so much.

Here we go with the who’s better an dwho sucks in the secondary. The owner thinks Routt is legit cover corner thus the contract. Rout can play any position he wants at corner at this point. He can flat out cover. He not in the top teir but he definitrly bettee than average. Those two rookies can play better than many think in here. Chekwa was very highly touted his last two seasons even more than DVD.

That means Routt is a 1 trick pony who can cover on the outside vs the deep pass and nothing else. Routt admitted he was not comfortable covering in the slot and he usually gets burned on crossing routes. I doubt the opposing team will only let Routt’s WR run fly routes only. With our pass rush this year, you’re going to see a bunch of short passes against our D. They wont have the time to bomb on us but all they have to do is look at the Miami tape and a slow 40time guy like Bess will smoke us all day.

Tackling is VERY important, I never said It wasn’t. I just don’t put tons of stock in a hard hitting CB (Not that there is anything wrong with that). Routt is getting better with the fundamental tackle. If he takes the guy down, cool. Leave the hard hittin to the safeties. Routt was exceling at man coverage as the season progressed. He also was doing a lot better at avoiding timely P.I. calls. CJ37 has excersised very poor judgement in the time he did play last year, To say the least his errors were costly. Let’s just sum it up this way, Routt by far has more upside that CJ37.
BTW you called Routt a 1 trick pony, Even if that were true (whick I don’t believe it to be) I would take a 1 trick pony over a no trick pony-CJ37. Let’s face it CJ37 excels at nothing and is at a stage of his career where he probaly will not get any better. I’m sure you watched the same 2 hits that CJ37 made last year and were just blown away. Sorry, 2 great hits don’t make a great CB. Go watch the film objectively and holler back.
May 24th, 2011 at 1:29 pm
*than not that
May 24th, 2011 at 1:33 pm
Actually, CJ had some really bad calls against him last year. He plays like Lionel Washington back in the old days. I saw every single game and even the announcers would usually say that was a bad call. But you believe in Routt and I dont. Is Routt or CJ #1 material in this league. Heck no. Do I think CJ is great? No. I think he has skills as a FS that would really help us.
Routt whiffing on tackles have resulted in huge gains by the other teams. I sincerely hope he improves but the chances of him working hard after getting a big fat contract is slim for me. He finally worked hard last year because it was a contract year. You know it as well.

“A lot of these OTAs and seven- on-seven drills led by players are nothing more than coming out and playing touch football,” Smith said.
Seymour wanted the workouts to be organized and intense.
“We just wanted to give Atlanta a little bit of a taste of the Raiders as well,” said Seymour, the six-time Pro Bowler who played at Georgia. “I know there are some big Falcons fans down here, but we brought the Raider Nation in here today.”
Campbell, who played at Auburn, had most of the wide receivers staying with him in his suburban Washington, D.C. home.
“I had to get them out of my house,” Campbell said. “They eat too much. Also, they are younger than me too. So, it’s ‘let’s go here. Let’s go there.’ I want to go to sleep.”
The Falcons, who practiced on the same field about a half an hour after the Raiders, were impressed with Oakland’s turnout.

“It was impressive to see how many guys that they had down here,” Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan said. “But I think that’s a commitment that players have. Everybody is professional about what we do. Even though we are not able to go to the facility at this point, we know that we need to stay in shape.”
Some of the Raiders on hand included running back Darren McFadden, fullback Rock Cartwright, wide receivers Louis Murphy, Darrius Heyward-Bey and Jacoby Ford, linebacker Rolando McClain, rookie cornerback DeMarcus Van Dyke and rookie center Stefen Wisniewski.

———————
Nice name drop (lionel Washington)
There were plenty of questionable P.I. calls for the Raiders secondary, CJ37 just seemed to be involved the most. Yes players miraculously have better season during contract years But I believe with Routt it was also a combination of him just putting the work in and just “getting it”.
BTW, It’s not like I will be mad if CJ37 has a good year, We just have differing opinions on who is going to be our best CB.
May 24th, 2011 at 1:57 pm
Seymour and Campbell are f’n scabs. Every player in the league should sit on his arse and gain 50 lbs. as long as the owners are locking them out. The owners are going to cave, you nimrods. They’re playing a game. They won’t let this thing go into October. Don’t be stupid. With the money they’d lose? Golf would become the new fall Sunday sport in America. They’d never let that happen.

CJ certainly has more football instincts than Routt. Routt is still a track star trying to play football. He is absolutely useless over the middle and admitted as much throughout his career.

Chrysler repays $7.6B in government loans
By TOM KRISHER , 05.24.11, 04:56 PM EDT
STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. — With a few computer keystrokes in an office at its headquarters, Chrysler Group LLC sent $7.6 billion to the U.S. and Canadian governments on Tuesday, paying off most of the bailout money that saved the company from financial disaster just two years ago.
The repayment at 10:13 a.m. was expected for weeks and is another sign of the automaker’s comeback. Chrysler went from a company that almost ran out of cash and endured bankruptcy in 2009 to one that is revamping its lineup and last quarter posted its first net profit in five years.

Well MR, some guys have pride in their craft. They take the game seriously no matter what. The lockout at some point will end and these guys who wanna win a title will go over and beyond to do it regardless of what is happening at the top.
Calling them cowards for working out is totally unfair. I would think guys keeping themselves in shape and keeping that unity with their teammates is a sign of unison. That has nada to do with the owners. We have players allowing players to stay at their houses and they are paying the tabs for their presence man. Cant you see they are more together than ever?

CJ is going to have to learn how to ankle tackle those RBs on screens and use his hands to fight through the defense to the ball carrier.
I see McFadden playing that free safety spot starting out then switching over to corner. We usually work the rookies in to that third DB spot.

Brien, try to absorb this with your small Aryan brain
The players are working out, as you noted, to prepare for their division rivals. The owners can see this. They’re effectively trying to divide the players right now. That’s one of their many strategies. So as long as the players are working out, to compete with players on opposing teams, or even some on their own team where depth chart spots are concerned, the owners can see an avenue for manipulation. They shouldn’t be working out at all. They should all be camped out at the gates, in unison, doing absolutely nothing football related until the gates are unlocked again by these unreasonable owners. If all players on all teams are not working out, then there’s no pressure on players to work out. The players should be doing everything they can to work in unison, and avoiding everything they can that’s divisive. It’s just that Campbell and Seymore are a couple of dumb meat heads who can’t wrap their brains around that. I frankly blame D Smith for losing control. I had a lot of faith in him at first. @RMR
Is Drew Brees a scab as well? Is he secretly working against the players, a “Mole” for the owners?
“Brees is one of 10 players named in the antitrust litigation against the NFL.”
“Because NFL teams are locked out, players have been unable to attend usual offseason training sessions at club headquarters with their coaches. So Brees and a few dozen teammates have banded together to hold similar workouts at Tulane.”

Brees isnt a scab or any target of criticism from MR…he isnt playing on the Raiders

Brien, you’re right about the AFC West. And, lucky for the owners, many of the players are as dumb as you, and can only think about football results when they are in a monumental labor struggle right now. I don’t know why they even bothered. Why did they? Why don’t players just start showing up to their respective teams headquarters and signing contracts right now, agreeing to the owners’ terms? They’re not union members right now. They’re decertified. I don’t know why they’re wasting their time with this.

Well, because Brees has been organizing player workouts well before Seymour and Campbell have. Brees has organized activites where fans can watch the Saints work out and win prizes in a raffle.
“Drew Brees has had more than 40 Saints gathered for three weeks.”

Good for the WRs not showing up. Nobody should. Let those two brick heads, Seymour and Campbell, work out together. Preferably in a bath house. This is a labor struggle. A human rights struggle. And, Seymour and Campbell are clearly out. They just want to make sure they get an edge on their “opponents”. Little do these lizard brained morons realize, their “opponents” right now are their union brothers.

That may be true, but to continually get beat the same way was pretty sad. I mean, why not bring a LB or 2 instead of both the Ss? an occasional corner blitz, or maybe just a base 4 man rush?

Grad was the worse. Miam runs a 3-4 defense and didnt blitz really lol. They dared an NFL Qb of backup material to do it all day long. They played for the run and wasnt scared of his arm. I’m fully convinced JC wins that game.

Loper certainly isn’t being paid like insurance.
Neither is Hiram Eugene.

Raiders will bring in a undrafted or FA LG to challenge Loper, Barksdale and Campbell.

Correction:Raiders will bring in a undrafted or FA LG to challenge Loper. Barksdale and Campbell will also be challenged by FA and rookie FA’s.

It seems strange that, after the Raiders best year in years, #2 Rushing Team, High Scoring Team, that they would be re-building their O-line at this point.

Raiders know that they’ll be playing much better teams in 2011.
May 24th, 2011 at 5:07 pm
In the Miami game, the Oline was simply not able to get ANYTHING done. The right side of the the OL was especially horrible and played on the wrond side of the LOS for most of the day.
I can clearly see why we will have new starters on the OL. Couple in the FA factor with Gallery and Satele, and there you have it.
May 24th, 2011 at 5:11 pm
It has zero to do with WHO they’re playing it’s about WHO they want to be. They want to be very physical up front and bruise defenses with that Oline. Not to mention have some degree of excellence in protecting the QB.
This was Cable’s charge when he excepted the job, fix the Oline make it dominant. He never made them even……good at passpro. They were average at best, the owner wants them to be dominant…………..period
May 24th, 2011 at 5:14 pm
So Al Davis’ move to the ZBS was a complete failure?
May 24th, 2011 at 5:19 pm
They got over with a patchwork OL playing a middle-of-the road schedule in 2010. That will not work again this season because of the stronger schedule this season. Raiders knew this and drafted the OL this draft year accordingly.
May 24th, 2011 at 5:19 pm
I wonder why Davis went ZBS in the first place.
May 24th, 2011 at 5:22 pm
I think Cable somehow talked him into it (or maybe Cable and/or Kiffin).

why are we even talking about that p.o.s. tom cable?
35player turnout? …thats a pretty big turnout ..i wonder if any other teams had a larger turnout ..considering the circumstances (cross country) thats pretty good.

3yrs and couldnt even get the Oline right …why continue to waste your time with that toad
May 24th, 2011 at 7:19 pm
I’m not convinced that Eugene’s contract means that Huff is gone. Until we see his contract, could basically be a 1 year deal etc…
That’s what I’m hoping anyway. Think Huff has finally matured in our system and it would be hard to see him go and be a perineal probowler elsewhere.
May 24th, 2011 at 7:22 pm
When you get a turnout like that, that is when you know you have some good leaders on your ball club.
May 24th, 2011 at 7:24 pm
Big Sey has done wonders for this ballclub …his leadership is just something that you dont find many places.

Just wondering why the Raiders went ZBS in the first place, and now, after an 8-8 season it has to be rebuilt.
May 24th, 2011 at 7:37 pm
They went with ZBS under Kiffy because thats what he ran at USC. Al gave that kid a lot of rope and he promptly hung himself with it. That’s just how/why it happened.
They started to move away from pure ZBS under Hue and imo played better football. Mixed it up. And Hue’s playcalling helped the line. Tom Cable should have never been allowed to call plays he was so bad.

Read the report about the camp. Campbell took every snap from Wiz at center. Looks like somebody is looking to start opening day.

T’pin some people wouldn’t know a ZBS from a chorus line all they want to do is hate on the owner…………period
When you hire a coach you have to allow him to coach his systems or whynhire him. Changing coaches isn’t some plan by the owner it’s something thta happens when you make the kind of mistakes he’s been making. He’s picked some coaches that really didn’t want to work with him as much as for him. When you take this job read the memo. The owner is the GM as well he will be your direct boss he always has been. The writing on the wll is the size of a billboard. No hidden agendas exist.
May 24th, 2011 at 8:41 pm
I think this is wonderful news. No other first rounder this year is going to be doing something like this for their team, plus bringing this much leadership, not to mention what he has already done the past couple seasons. Seymour is worth the trade and I would do it all over again if I was AL. For someone to fork out from his own pocket the money to cover something like this is just plain and simple a true classy professional and a real man. In a sense, he is putting back money into the company that paid him all that money in the first place. How many people do you know that would do something like that. An event like this wasn’t cheap I bet, and even if he had some help from others, still he gets most if not all the credit by my book.
Thank you Seymour, for giving it your all and showing the young guys what a true leader and man is. And thank you Al for bringing him in, with all your bad choices recently, this is one that you should brag about.
Here’s to a new Raiders team, a winning Raiders team. As always, GO RAIDERS!
Oh, and don’t want to forget JC. Good job showing the players and fans that you are serious about this and at least trying to be the leader of the offense. That’s more than we are used to seeing from QBs around here in a while.
May 24th, 2011 at 8:49 pm
EMR that’s why I dubbed him “King Richard” I’ve never heard of the kind of leadeership he’s exhibited since coming here. It’s unprecedented as far as I’m concerned.
