Instant free for all in free agency?

Share

A post on Profootballtalk.com refers to an e-mail from Saints quarterback Drew Brees which says free agency will be an instant free-for-all starting on Tuesday, rather than the 72-hour window previously reported for teams to sign their own players.

With regard to the Raiders, that means any team could swoop in with an offer for tight end Zach Miller and give Oakland no room to counter the offer. Of course, Miller may have already had productive talks with the Raiders before the lockout. But it does bring with it at least some degree of uncertainty.

Much of the NFL personnel business won’t be sorted out for a couple of weeks after the rules are made clear.

NOTE: As Steve Corkran noted earlier, the powers that be have had us swap positions. He’ll be doing most of the blogging, I’ll be doing most of the Raiders stuff for print.

In terms of this space, not much should change. We’ve been collaborating for awhile now, and if you’ve noticed the number of “Steve Corkran reported” references over the years, the only difference is you won’t have to wait for him to tell me. He’ll simply tell you himself.

If all goes according to plan, I’ll fill in for him on occasion on the blog and he’ll do the same for me in print.

    ************Just thinking about free agency***********

    We need more o-line help.

We can not loose Zach Miller or our offense is toast. Our passing game is to weak to lose our most productive WR who happens to be our tightend.

I would keep Zach over Mike Bush.

If I keep Nam I do. If not, I draft the best corner left standing and make salary cap room for next year.

    ^^^^^^^
Tittle is the back up currently on 95.7FM, even though he needs to have his own show on there or at least work with Townsend on the show Townsend Show where he talks all sports.

Tittle is still on SportsByline radio online.

  • hwnrdr

If there is no supplemental draft, will someone like Pryor go in the league as a rookie FA? Or is it that he will have to sit out a year like Big Mike WIlliams?

  • J Hill

I was a bit surprised too, Dakota.

But who are we really paying dead money too?

JaMarcus was cut with little to no cap ramifications. I’m sure of that.

We can’t possibly still have cap $ tied to Walker. How long ago was that?

    Same with Meangelo.

Sounds good to say we have dead money tied to those guys, but where’s the proof?

    Propoganda I say!

  • priesttj

    Thanks for the info BigTed…

  • Dakota

    Jhill,

I think those sites you previously referenced regarding the salary cap used the below article to base their numbers on…..said article was written on February 7th….prior to the Seymour, Wimble, Routt etc last second deals. I don’t think the $85 million dollar number is accurate, or even anywhere near accurate.

“If there is no supplemental draft, will someone like Pryor go in the league as a rookie FA?”

Pryor is not eligible for the supplemental draft. He does not qualify so he will be a walk on if he wants to play this year or he will sit and work on being eligible for next years draft.

  • Today, the NFL will publish a Free Agency List.

On Tuesday, team facilities will open for voluntary training, conditioning, and classroom instruction.

    On Tuesday, trades can begin.

At 10:00 a.m. ET on Tuesday, teams may sign drafted rookies, undrafted rookies, and negotiate with (but not sign) their own unrestricted free agents, restricted free agents, exclusive-rights players, and franchise players.

Also, beginning at 10:00 a.m. ET on Tuesday, teams may negotiate with, but not sign or give offer sheets to, other team’s unrestricted free agents, restricted free agents, and franchise players.

At 4:01 p.m. ET on Thursday, teams may waive or terminate player contracts.

At 6:00 p.m. ET on Friday, teams may renegotiate existing player contracts.

Also at 6:00 p.m. ET on Friday, teams sign their own unrestricted free agents, restricted free agents, exclusive-rights free agents, and franchise players.

Also at 6:00 p.m. ET on Friday, teams may sign unrestricted free agents from other teams, restricted free agents from other teams, and franchise players from other teams.

No payment of any kind can be made to any player until the CBA has been ratified by the players.

The 2011 league year will begin no later than August 4. When the 2011 league year begins, teams must be under the salary cap. (Specifically, their highest 51 cap numbers must fit under the cap.)

Thus, look for some teams to possibly go over the projected cap this week, and then to find a way to get under the cap before the official start of the league year.

You had the same feeling when we argued about JaMoron.

Guess we’ll have to see who’s right about JaJason.

Either way, Al should be making a move.

Walk on where? A major college team? I don’t think you can do that. Maybe on a Junior College team?

He isn’t eligible to be a “walk-on” this year. He won’t be allowed to play in 2011. He will be eligible for the 2012 draft. All this, assuming there is no supplemental.

    Dakota,

Knowing the mediots, it’s probably somewhere right in the middle.

I’m just asking for some definitive examples of who we could be paying dead $ too. Prior to the signings in Feb, there were HUGE $s coming off the books due to contracts expiring.

Our most expensive guys (Seymour, Nnamdi, Huff, Gallery, and Routt, CJ37, Howard, Miller) ALL had their contracts expire. If you want to talk about pre signings, I have a hard time believing we were at 85 million BEFORE resigning these guys.
