Ex-Raiders cornerback Skip Thomas dies at 61

Share

Sad news from the Raiders family today, where it was learned that former Oakland Raiders cornerback Alonzo “Skip” Thomas died of a heart attack on Sunday. He was 61.
Nicknamed “Dr. Death.” Thomas spent all six years of his NFL career in Silver & Black after being selected by Oakland in the seventh round of the 1972 NFL draft. Thomas, who had 17 interceptions during his career, was a starting cornerback alongside Willie Brown for most of his career. His career was highlighted by a strong performance in the Raiders’ Super Bowl victory over Minnesota in Super Bowl XI in 1977.
Thomas’ death comes almost a year to the day that former defensive backfield teammate Jack Tatum passed away. Tatum died July 27, 2010.
Check back for reaction from the Raiders plus more from Jerry McDonald and Steve Corkran.

All the talk about system. Really can anyone tell me how many systems there are and how they are so different. C’mon it’s football and every team has an element of west coast. Either you can play QB or you can’t. Or you are a late bloomer like Gannon or Orton. Here’s to hoping JC is a late bloomer. But I would still rather go get a guy that I know can play than hope one I have can. Noodle arm like Montana? Brains bet brawn ever time.
    ******************************

What element would that be? Short passes have been around forever so I dont get what you mean. System we talking about staples and certain patterns and gameplans you have for your team. Raiders are doing 10-15 yard in and out rights with deep hooks and curls….then big bombs on post routes and double moves.

Sorry but this either you can or cant is false. Gannon would have never been such a hero to yall in Bugel’s 97 offense. You think Gruden was gonna run a vertical system here?

Here is Clayton’s reasoning: Davis was aggressive in re-signing eight players for contracts totaling $85.48 million. But if the cap is at $120 million, the Raiders may have issues. If new cap rules exclude some $26 million in “dead” money for players whose contracts were voided to make them free agents this year that would help.

    ——————————————————

    Dakota,

Clayton is speculating that we have dead money coming from guys who had their contracts voided THIS YEAR???

He’s counting 8 the 8 guys we resigned 80 million against the cap THIS year?

That doesn’t sound right at all.

  • raiderfankirk

That’s why gruden was so good and made our not so good d look good. Daddy Mac and Taiwan Jones should be used just like Charlie Garner and Marshal Faulk were. See what happens when you consistently leave our d on the field. Can’t hold up for ever.

Certainly not easy to find. I don’t see any better options in 2011 other than Campbell. If we had a team on the cusp then one of those old vets might come in handy, but that simply isn’t the case. Campbell is what he is and will never be more that what he has already shown himself to be, so in 2012 we better have our eyes open for the next guy.

What is it that you guys want JC to do that is beyond his capabilities. Can someone with some credibility answer that?

The knock on JC is that he plays scared. If a WR plays scared we all know what happens….alligator arms wont go across the middle hears footsteps etc.

I think JaJason is incapable of carrying the Raiders to victory

    —————————————————–

What does carrying the Raiders to victory mean?

You think there are scenarios where the running game won’t be working and Glo won’t be able to find open recievers when he has decent pass protection?

Or are you saying that he won’t be able to overcome the pass protection issues and lack of open WRs?
    ===============================================

JH, It means taking the team on your shoulders, and being able to gobble up yards – and put points on the board through the air. Especially when the run game isn’t working and the Raids are trailing.

Obviously, I don’t think JaJason is going to overcome pass protection issues. In fact, I think some of the pass protection issues are DUE to JaJason. I think he tips not only the snap count, but also tips when a pass play is coming. He has a real bad habit of rocking back just a drop before the snap – especially on pass plays. Watch for it. Tennessee did, and so did the rest of the league. JaJason also has a very long delivery and can’t handle the blitz well at all.

I’m reluctant to criticize Raid WRs too much. Not saying we have a good crew. But I also don’t think they’re as bad as many think. The truth is JaJason hasn’t gone downfield too often, and when he has – the results haven’t generally been good.

I also don’t like to criticize JaJason too much for being known as Captain Checkdown. At least JaJason knows his limitations. I’d rather JaJason continue to check down than continuously throw picks or incompletions.

I’d just prefer him to do it in another uniform.

Raids need a better QB. I’m afraid that’s going to be very evident as the season progresses.

Whether you agree or not, surely the Raids need to have a better backup than Boller in case I’m right or even if JaJason gets injured.

I’d like that to be Vince Young. Although I’m sure VY would surplant JC as the starter in short order.

Who’d you like the Raids to being in, J Hill ?

You looking for me? Why don’t you, Danny Southwick, Jon Condo, get together, put on some Darren Mcfadden highlights, and get a 3-way going. You could be in the pivot.

    RAIDERMAN99,

In response to your criticisms of “JaJason”, I think even you allow he has his redeeming qualities. He’s not P. Rivers or P. Manning. We got it. We also know that there isn’t a franchise QB out there ready to be traded or dropped to us. We got no choice but to take lemons and turn them into lemonaid.

But we are in the same boat as about 20 or so teams out there, if not better with “JaJason”. We don’t need the whole season to tell us he won’t lead us the SB anytime soon. We all know this. Why continue to bring up that Jason Campbell isn’t the ideal QB? We already know. But if the team is built around a good defense and solid run game, with good play calling, we got a punchers chance. Do you at least give the Raiders that?

  • priesttj

Consistently playing with confidence I felt the same way to a certain extent. But watching him closer most of what I saw was a lack of confidence in the players around him. He’s trying to keep the offense on the field and he plays within himself and the within the abilities of the players around him. Smart IMO!!

  • raiderfankirk

Bauce my point on system is simply. Reading a defense is reading a defense. An out is an out. An in is an in. Slant is a slant. Post is a post. System excuse is just that an excuse.

He doesn’t have the leadership ability. When a player is on the wrong page, he need to grab them by the shirt and say, “You do this or you do that.” When the players are not on the same page, he has to call a time out and or run the play and get a penalty.”

Krappy, thanks for the update on your Monday schedule. I’m sure that sauna and steam will help you detox from the Arby’s value meal you inhaled last night.

I’m not sure where the old fool goes to sauna, but Krappy is going to violate most of the health codes.

  • priesttj

The playing with confidence thing is fair but with the caveate it’s hard to do that when the players you’re working with are not ready for what your asking them to do. I think you’ll see a much more mature passing attack. Due to the confidence he has in his WR’s now. Most will say JC improved but I’ll say the passing game improved as a whole.

Most fans focus only on what the QB is doing and not the passing game as a whole. Our WR’s leave a lot to desired as far as route running and that directly affects a QB’s confidence.

  • Silverandblack666

    I hear you, Guest123.

Yeah, I hammer JaJason alot on this blog. Maybe it’s beating a dead horse.

Most of the posters here, like you, realize JaJason isn’t leading the Raids to the SB.

Truthfully, besides Mistic, I don’t think anyone thinks JaJason is very good.

There’s a lot, like BHP and Bauce, that go out of their way to defend JaJason, but even they have their reservations.

Most probably think he stinks but don’t like saying so.

Hell yeah, I give the Raids a ‘punchers chance’. I love the D-line and RBs. I think there’s tons of potential all over the roster.

Except at the most important position.

Which is why I’d be willing to gamble and bring VY in.
