Routt wears it now.

I was just thinking before I saw this post that our system of Mano-a-Mano puts a CB in the position where they have to develop or their out.
July 25th, 2011 at 10:26 pm
Not much conversation going on tonight. Surprising given alot of folks thought this day might not even come in time to even have a season.
It’s weird. Raiders rising to 8-8, sweeping the afc west, and all arrows seemingly pointed up, and yet as good as I think Raiders CAN be this year, i am very nervous about this season. I’m afraid I have no idea where they will end up in the standings. Usually I have a strong feeling one way or the other, but this year I wouldn’t be shocked if they go 12-4. Unfortunately I wouldn’t be shocked of they go 3-13 either.
July 25th, 2011 at 10:30 pm
The NFLN guys can’t help talking about the freaking Dallas Cowboys. That team has won ONE playoff game in over FIFTEEN (15) YEARS.
Give it a rest already.
July 25th, 2011 at 10:30 pm
Have no fear. Look at previous games and you will see the play calling’s legit and our players really do break away when they have the ball.
July 25th, 2011 at 10:31 pm
God Bless Skip…
July 25th, 2011 at 10:32 pm
Certain teams make sure they have the best snacks at press conferences.
July 25th, 2011 at 10:33 pm
The Raiders have won 4 x the amount of playoff games Dallas has in the last 15 years.
How’s that for a weird stat?
July 25th, 2011 at 10:34 pm
9 Posts in one day…. love it
July 25th, 2011 at 10:39 pm
Whats even weirder is we have less holes than Dallas and they’re eyeing one if not two of our players in free agency.
July 25th, 2011 at 10:45 pm
Yeah. They may just get Aso.
I hope we get some FA’s to get excited about when we lose him.
Al Davis alluded to that. I hope he comes through with it.
I don’t think Raiders can just stand pat. I want Al to do something exciting. It’s supposed to be fun, this old game of football, so get it done.
July 25th, 2011 at 11:03 pm
I’m watching my all-time favorite college team with Marcus Allen, Charles White, Ronnie Lott, Chip Banks, Anthony Munoz and many others including Brad Budde. I think all told they were the most talented team I can remember from USC. They beat Art Schlisters Ohio St team in the Rose Bowl. Woody Hayes was still coaching and John Robinson was HC of USC.
I remember going to the Stanford game to see them play I thought those fools were like rock stars I followed them to the lockeroom and nack to the Bus. I remember gawking at Charles White as if he was the second coming. ………LOL
I loved USC at that time and the talent was awesome I watched Marcus a lot but man I never thought he would be better than Charles White it was just inconceivable. What a team…………..damn that was big fun!!
July 25th, 2011 at 11:12 pm
Gerard I was thinking about where wqe would end up and the record that just jumped out at me was 11-5. Why I’m not sure except to say it just jumped out at me like the Raiders will be 11-5 I was like YEAH BABY!!! we gonna put it down on some folks.
Now I’m not at all predicting records because I never do, injuries play way too much of a part of this game. But I have a sneaking suspicion this team is going to get off to a very fast start.
July 25th, 2011 at 11:16 pm
Hope you’re right Priest
July 25th, 2011 at 11:17 pm
Sorry about the Woody Hayes mistake but he was long gone Earle Bruce was HC of Ohio St. Woody hit a kid (from Georgia) on the sideline and they forced him out.
July 25th, 2011 at 11:20 pm
I hope so too I’ve never had a notion to call a record before we even play a game but HEY IT just hit me like BOOM get ready!!
I hope it wasn’t just me overreacting to the LOCKOUT ending….I can’t wait to see Taiwan Jones and Denarius Moore.
July 25th, 2011 at 11:25 pm
Peace Mr Thomas. Rest easy.
July 25th, 2011 at 11:26 pm
We are gonna have a crowded backfield. Hue will do a good job of finding taiwan’s strengths and using him efficiently. i think the kid is gonna be special.
July 25th, 2011 at 11:29 pm
Dr Death was something else man that dude was a strange character. He had the talent to be truely great but he just wouldn’t intercept passes he used knock them down instead. Once a couple of years ago I ha dthe chance to chat with him when I called George and he was in Missouri where he went to school. He told me he wanted to play for Kansas City before we drafted him. I never knew that…….but him Willie George and Jack was one of the most dynamic secondaries in the history of the game.
July 25th, 2011 at 11:31 pm
This is even more crazy, but i have a feeling that bey is gonna man up and be a force. he has the body and work ethic, he just needs the mentality. hope to see that he added more mass over this offseason like he did last year. we need production from him and the rest of the O will have alot of room to breathe. Im just all around excited bout this season
July 25th, 2011 at 11:33 pm
Raiders haven’t been able to recreate a secondary like it ever since…
July 25th, 2011 at 11:39 pm
No one has been able to creat a secondary like that since. That is very difficult to do especially with FA in the mix. You can’t keep your players long enough.
July 25th, 2011 at 11:42 pm
Well the Niners had a secondary similar with Lott, Williamson, Wright and Hicks they were damn close. That’s how the niners beat Marino.
July 25th, 2011 at 11:45 pm
With the players we have and increased experience there is no reason to think they cant win games.
July 25th, 2011 at 11:53 pm
If Nnamdi were to stay I could see the secondary we have now being very special and I’ve said as much. This secondary has a lot of talent on it.
July 25th, 2011 at 11:54 pm
True
July 25th, 2011 at 11:55 pm
If the Pats release Nick Kaczur, the Raiders should sign him. Quality veteran depth for the line, can play either RT or RG. Good mentor for the young guys, and if he’s healthy he’s an instant upgrade over Khalif Barnes who may not be interested in returning anyway.
July 25th, 2011 at 11:58 pm
huff has alot to do with it.it’d be tough for our pass D to play at a high level consistently without him. his tackling scares me but his coverage is on point
July 25th, 2011 at 11:59 pm
Khalif prob run to seattle with cable
July 26th, 2011 at 12:03 am
Name to keep in mind tomorrow: Darrin Walls, CB Notre Dame. Big, fast defensive back who can tackle. Said he agreed in principle with a team but he couldn’t say which one…
July 26th, 2011 at 12:33 am
Pat Devlin agreed to terms with the Cardinal….. Shout out to my homeboy Donovan Edwards got the call from the Niners… I hate SF but Im glad he’s getting a chance to live his dream… Jus like my brother Jahvid Best did last year
July 26th, 2011 at 12:42 am
Drank Best is your brother?? Kid is a helluva player.
It’s going to be big fun this year folks….
I like Huff and he played very well at times last year probably one of the top 10 FS’s in the game, but I have to say if I had a chance to select between him and Branch at FS I would take Branch. I know that sounds crazy but that’s how high I am on Branch at FS.
July 26th, 2011 at 12:50 am
Not my brother but became close friends with him during the High School years and now he’s dating my home girl from pinole…. Just a small world

Just catching up on the posts.
Dr Death goes one year after the Assassin.
At least Tatum and Upshaw have some company.
God bless you Skip. R.I.P.
Willie Brown in one corner and Skip Thomas in the other–on a team that had Snake Stable holding for George Blanda kicking and all the other great Raiders!

watched on NFL Network, pundits actually complinated Mr. Al Davis’ intuitiveness in signing some core personnel before the lockout.
also Mr. Warren Sapp stated that someone from Oakland told they had a lineman at 400 pounds.
Who could that be Mr. Walker or Mr. Henderson? I can’t think of who else it could be.
July 26th, 2011 at 2:07 am
Walker
July 26th, 2011 at 2:34 am
Langston was near 400 at the end of the season. At a legit 6′8″ he plays at 360 lbs anyway. Not good, but can be worked out. Dude may retire anyway.

Interesting!

July 26th, 2011 at 5:51 am
Good morning Nation. Sounds bleak on the salary cap front, but $24 million is dead money due to vacated contracts (Aso’s is 17 mill alone) Still have yet to have anyone answer definitively if dead money will count towards the cap or not.
July 26th, 2011 at 5:52 am
I’d take Heap at $2 million per season over making Zach Miller the league’s highest paid TE …

Kyle Orton to the Fins?

Bill Williamson & John Clayton say YES. dead money does indeed count
July 26th, 2011 at 5:57 am
That doesnt make much sense to me though? How does Nnamdi count as 17 million against our cap, AND 17-20 million against the cap of whoever signs him?
July 26th, 2011 at 5:58 am
If we retain Nnamdi does that mean he will count for more than 30 million against our cap?
July 26th, 2011 at 5:59 am
Langston Walker is up to 400 pounds?
is this because he quit working out over the summer and plans to retire or is he bulking up to play guard in Wylie’s all-power scheme, where as Cable wanted leaner guys who could move ???
Carlisle cut. Walker re-signed to play right guard at the vet minimum. Campbell moved to tackle. Loper at LG
July 26th, 2011 at 5:59 am
Or if we resign him does it eliminate that dead money issue? Seems if that is the case then there is no reason NOT to resign him and pay him the kings ransom
July 26th, 2011 at 6:04 am
just my take – Nnamdi doesn’t count against our cap (no dead money) because his contract voided when he didn’t meet certain criteria
that is an old figure. #21 would have counted $17 mil against the cap if he had met those goals and finished the final year of that 3-year deal
Huff opted out too. not sure how that changes things
these two guys gone means more money elsewhere imo

Glad that Al Davis was finally able to get Al Saunders to work for him, this from last year’s training camp with Baltimore:
“Al Saunders is so competitive that he used to run five marathons a year — three as training runs and two to win.
He is so competitive that when he was an assistant coach in Kansas City with the Chiefs, he would park his car 10 miles from the practice facility and run to work. Then, at the end of the long coaching day, he would run back to his car.
He is so competitive that when he talks about his newest job with the Ravens — coaching the team’s young receivers — he says: “In our classroom, nobody can fail. In our classroom, everybody has to get A’s.”
Understand this about the Ravens’ senior offensive assistant:
Saunders approaches everything he does with a conviction and dedication to win. In his world, there are no shortcuts, detours or regrets.
What the 63-year-old London native brings to Westminster next week for the start of training camp is 39 years of coaching expertise — some of it with the best offensive teams in NFL history — and boundless enthusiasm.
Saunders’ favorite classroom as a coach has always been the 120-yard by 531/3-yard rectangle where players learn the game and earn their stripes. That’s where he gets his biggest kick, his most satisfaction.
That will be obvious to fans who attend the Ravens’ practices at McDaniel College this summer.
What they will see is an assistant coach always on the move. In a typical practice during a typical passing camp in June, Saunders skittered about the field in a choreographed fit of hyperactivity.
Play after offensive play, Saunders would break the huddle with players, assume a studied position along the sideline, jog down the field after the ball and, upon his return, sidle up to a young receiver offering pointers.
Sometimes he would sneak up behind a player after the play and try to knock the ball out of his grasp, delivering Lesson 1 in ball security.
“Oh, my gosh, is he unbelievable or what?” coach John Harbaugh gushed after one June workout.
“You know, Al’s a marathon-type guy. He’s in great shape. Yeah, Al runs around and coaches hard.”
It’s a routine Saunders has always followed, one that only a handful of other NFL assistants emulate. He said he learned it from John McKay when Saunders was a graduate assistant at Southern California in 1970.
Instant feedback, he said, is the best time to plant a correction or a compliment in a player’s head.
“I always heard stories about what a great coach Al was,” offensive coordinator Cam Cameron said.
“We’re just thrilled that we have him. He’s a great resource for me. He has so much expertise in so many areas.”

We only lost OTas and minicamp. We arent losing one training camp practice, and remember we are running the same offense as last year. We arent THAT far behind the ball. We HAVE to sign 2 vet olineman though. With our oline the way it stands I dont think we can realistically be competetive this year.
July 26th, 2011 at 6:53 am
Resigning Zach Miller won’t allow us to make a big FA sigining, I think, but I don’t see anyone out of that list posted above that we should really go after anyway.
Everyone likes Clabo but I would prefer RG Marshall Yanda from Baltimore, Hue and Saunders know him and he won’t be as expensive considering he’s played RG most of the time, but he’s played RT ocasionally, his versatility would give us some options and secure another starting position on the OL so we don’t have to start both Bruce Campbell and Barksdale.
If possible I’d sign Yanda long-term and Langston to a 1 year deal, Campbell and Barksdale should have to beat out those guys for playing time.
July 26th, 2011 at 6:56 am
Raiders still the only team that hasn’t signed a UDFA.

I still think it would be a mistake to let Miller go, but if he’s asking for too much we have no choice!
I’m not sold on Heap either. Dude is on the back end of his career. He had multiple injuries i believe last year. Not saying he doesn’t have anything left in the tank, just don’t think he would last a whole season. Besides, it wouldn’t surprise me that he restructers that 4 mill and returns, cause Balt doesn’t have a vet te to replace him.

They have Ed Dickson, and he played well in stretches when Heap went down with an injury. Didn’t Heap also have 10 catches in that playoff game last year? I don’t think he’s done, but I agree that at his age, it’s tough to count on him all season long.
July 26th, 2011 at 7:16 am
Al Davis should cite the 14th Amendment and assert his constitutional authority to ignore the debt ceiling, er… salary cap.
July 26th, 2011 at 7:23 am
Guest, yes he did have a great playoff game! The only thing that worries me is his age and not so sure he’ll be able to finish out the season. Also you have to keep in mind, they have a great passing attack, with Boldin, Mason. Would he shine here with very little help at stretching the field? Don’t get me wrong tho, i love watching Jacoby!

Miller is ranked 8 in the top 50 free agents. This is why he’s so important to this team…
8. TE Zach Miller (Raiders) – In a great era for receiving tight ends, Miller is underrated. He has performed very well while having no support from the wide receiver or quarterback spots.

When some new $400k jabrone comes in next year, snaps the ball over Lechlers head and Lechler breaks his leg trying to get the punt away as he is crushed you will be wishing we spent that money on Condo…
In fact I would rather have Condo than Lechler. Pakulak can get the ball away, and with our more consistant offense we wont need lechler booting 55 yard punts.
July 26th, 2011 at 7:47 am
You mean like Adam Treu did Bcz? Guy snapped flawlessly AND played real football as a backup center! It CAN be done. Condo’s roster spot is too valuable now that we have so much youth to develop.

Nnamdi’s contract voiding = a 17 million dollar dead money issue for us? Huff’s contract voiding, and I guess Wimbley’s contract voiding give us dead money?
That is just absurd!!!!!

Routt and Seymour were our 2 biggest #s and they total only 25.
Who did the other 75 million go to?
Henderson
Loper
Eugene
Boeller
Who are the other 4 guys again?
July 26th, 2011 at 8:19 am
Jhill,
You know how when a team signs a free agent his signing bonus and other bonuses are spread out or “prorated” over the entire length of the contract and that money then counts against the salary cap in each of those subsequent years and not the actual year the player received the money? You know that right?
The dead money from the 2008 contracts to players like J. Walker (6 years $55 mil), Deangelo Hall (7 years $70 mill) and Gibril Wilson (6 years, $39 mill) is still on the books.
Each of those players received signing bonuses that were spread out over the length of their contracts, and that money still counts against our cap in 2011. Those are just the players from 2008!

He didn’t say that….he said “depending on how much dead money is created by the voiding of Nnamdi’s contract, the Raiders are more than $10 million over the cap.”
Nnamdi signed a 3 year deal in 2009. Who knows how much of a signing bonus or roster bonus he received which would result in money being prorated over the three years including 2011? I don’t think Clayton is saying $17 million, but some portion will count against the cap in 2011 if he had bonuses that were prorated over the three year contract right?
July 26th, 2011 at 8:43 am
You guys cant be serious. You just cant overpay useless players for years and expect there to be no cap hit.
Yes we are way over the cap in fact we are the number one team over the cap. Yet we had no 1st round draft pick last year we have no 2nd and no 4th next year. We are about to lose our 2 best pro bowl players, Zach and Nnamdi because of our frivolous spending.
Its just not logical to spend and spend and over pay guys like JaMarcus then expect there to be no recourse for our spending.
So buckle up and face reality fans we are not going to be a big player in free agency this year.

July 26th, 2011 at 8:44 am
Deangelo Hall’s contract was not “picked up” because we cut him. He promptly went to Washington and got a new deal within the year.
That’s the issue with the VY’s and Reggie Bush’s of the world right now. A team that trades for them, is on the hook for their contract. If they get cut, the new team gets to start from scratch with their salary and cap number. The old team is still stuck with some guaranteed money owed, and a dead cap number.

Here’s how Coach Davis’ can go about pushing the debt into next season:
Darren McFadden:
McFadden is due $7.055 million. So let’s say they take him down to the minimum salary. They’d have to give him roughly $7 million in a signing bonus for him to get the same amount in 2011. Extend that over seven years.
Savings: $6 million
Tommy Kelly:
Kelley is on the books for just over a $7 million cap hit. Almost $2 million are from his signing bonus. His salary is $5.5 million. The Raiders could give him a $5 million bonus and a minimum salary to equal his 2011 number and combine that with the already $2 million bonus cap number.
Savings: $3 million
Richard Seymour:
The Raiders just signed Seymour so this would seem a little odd, but all of his guaranteed money came in the form of salary, and comes with a $15 million salary for 2011. The Raiders could turn that into a signing bonus, sign him for seven years, and give him a minimum salary for 2011.
Savings: $12 million
Kamerion Wimbley:
Wimbley is currently on the franchise tag. That has him on the hook for just over $11 million in 2011. The Raiders could give him a $14 million signing bonus and sign him to a seven year contract.
Savings: $9 million
That is $30 million in savings right there, and there other moves to be made.

I don’t know if teams resigned these guys but, CB Chris Houston with Detoit, S Dawan Landry from Balti-less, NT Aubrayo Franklin Whiners, LB Barret Ruud Tampon Bay, might be guys to take a look at. Of course raiding your division rivals in preferred. I always liked Legedu Naanee from the Discharge, but last year was not overly good for that player. I don’t know how his signing bonus ties into this years salary. Is it simply 20.7 divided by the 5 years? Or did 10 of it count last year?
I really have no idea.
Even so, we’re talking about 4 million or so. Did you agree with everyone else?

++++++++++++++
I don’t know and you don’t know, but it is common knowledge that a player’s signing bonus is prorated over the course of his contract length. That is how a player can get $20 million in year 1 of a 5 year deal and no count $20 million against the cap in year 1. Some portion of Hall’s contract was prorated over the 7 years and will count against our cap. Same with a portion of Wilson’s 6 year contract and a portion of Walker’s 6 year deal.
The Raiders have already paid out the money, so Al does not have to write a check for that amount but it still counts against the cap in the years that money was prorated over.
Hello….this is common cap knowledge. You know that Jhill.

Agreed.
Was disputing the 17 million number.
The issue I have with this is this year was an option year in Nnamdi’s contract. The first 2 years were fully guaranteed, but year 3 was an option year.
I can’t see that contract being drawn up in a way that would give the Raiders a significant cap hit if they choose not to pick up that option.

Wilson is the one guy I found info out on his bonus. According to Jerry Mac he signed a 6 year $39 million dollar deal with a signing bonus of $16 million. If the Raiders prorated that $16 million over the 6 years then he counds about $2.6 million against our cap. See below:
“By Jerry McDonald – NFL Writer

Both FoxSports and the New York Daily News are reporting free agent safety Gibril Wilson has agreed to a six-year, $39 million deal with the Raiders that includes a signing bonus of $16 million.
Wilson, a four-year veteran, has 11 career interceptions in 52 career games as a free safety for the Super Bowl champions. He had an excellent postseason in the Giants run for the title and is regarded as the best safety available.”

11/22/10 – Boosted by the return of senior cornerback Sterling Moore, SMU recorded a season-high five sacks and appeared to return to its more aggressive identity that had been missing in recent weeks. SMU also picked off Marshall quarterback Brian Anderson three times. SMU held on fourth and goal midway through the fourth quarter to end any ideas of a Marshall comeback. – The Sports Xchange
11/01/10 – Senior cornerback Sterling Moore (knee) missed his third straight game and is return is uncertain. – The Sports Xchange
10/25/10 – Senior CB Sterling Moore (knee) missed his second straight game. It’s uncertain when he’ll be able to return, but he’s healing faster than expected. – The Sports Xchange

09/24/10 – Senior CB Sterling Moore’s injured left knee will be re-evaluated later this week, but Coach June Jones remains confident he’ll be in the starting lineup against TCU. Moore, OG J.T. July 26th, 2011 at 9:30 am
The 49ers would be wise to get Hasselbeck – imo, he’s still the best QB in that division.

Oh, and I think we should sign Edwards and Gardowski as our backups, RM99.

You can take Chokie Lee Higgins salary off the cap. He won’t make the team. Not with Jacoby Ford. And Nick Miller. And the drafting of Denarius Moore is the death knell for Chokie Lee.
No Carson Palmer talk? Palmer is the prototypical Al Davis Q. And he is a Californian.

I don’t know either, but I’m sure we’ll find out soon.
Hope we don’t make more mistakes like overpaying Miller, Bush, Huff, or Nnamdi.
While I agree with Lefty that I’d like to see our young guys get a shot, I also believe there are some quality FAs out there that we will be able to get cheaper, AND they are better players!

Best Raider game I went to was against Philadelphia in ‘95, second game since coming back to Oakland. We destroyed them. The field went from center field to home plate, the stadium was just as it was for baseball, they didn’t have the bleacher structure out there that they would eventually use until Mt. Davis was built. So, the stadium looked like a bull fighting ring, with a football field just sitting out there in the middle. It was awesome. John Madden and Pat Summerall had to sit in a little bucket hanging off of the second deck, because there wasn’t a booth that gave a good view of the field. I watched it when I got home and Madden complained the whole time. I think Gruden was the Eagles OC.
July 26th, 2011 at 9:48 am
Good for Nnamdi. He’s a class act, and I would do the same if I was in his shoes. Money like that buys a lot of loyalty. This game forgets its heroes once they are worn out. $20M is insane money.

Nnamdi is a skilled, talented person in America. That means he comes at a price. If the Raiders can’t afford it, they have every right in the world to decline his services. But Nnamdi also has the right to market his services elsewhere. I can’t believe there’s so many Raider fans who don’t understand that, like Dakota. The caveat of the salary floor rule is that teams dont have to reach the floor until January 2012, these teams that have to spend all this money will likely wait until december and resign some of their guys to bigger contracts. Must be nice to pay a guy for production isntead of potential.

Brien, there’s no way Mike White went with Vince Evans, who I think had just turned 90 before the season started. There’s no way White even wanted Evans on the roster. The point is not who we had available, the point is that it should have been Mike White’s call. It clearly wasn’t. Vince Evans was an Al Davis guy, and Al forced him on Mike White. And I’m sure Al;s meddling didn’t start there. You don’t go 8-2 then plummet to 8-8. tha’ts just bizarre. It’s because the Raiders were using a WCO, then suddenly switched to a vertical offense once Hostettler got hurt. Thanks, Al. For ruining another hopeful season.

Al Davis used hostetler’s injury in ‘95 as plausibility to usurp White’s control of the team. That’s what Al does. He’ll let the coach coach as long as the team’s winning. Then, one loss, one injury…just like that. Al dismantles everything and goes back to the vertical game. Thank god Gannon didn’t get hurt, because he would have done the same thing then.

He was thrown into a vertical offense, when up to Hostettler’s injury, he had been practicing in a WCO. Yeah, tha’ts what you do to a rookie. Only Al Davis. Dumbest owner in sports.

Brien, you go to any mainstream sports site that isn’t crawling with your fellow Davis zombies, you’re either hiding your Al zombie personality, or you’re getting run out right from the get go. Al worshipers like you are considered to be the dumbest people in the world of sports. You’re not taken seriously for one second outside of blogs like this.

While some teams already have ten or more undrafted rookies pegged as having come to terms with them, the Oakland Raiders have only a few, with information scattered about. Of course, we’re only hours into this period and they want to make it up to the full roster limit as much as every other team, so there’s no cause of worry or anything like that – just a lot of rest and lounging for those of us on the Raider beat for the time. (Not really, but at least things aren’t as frantic as they will be)
Either way, two guys who have been brought in thus far: Alan Pelc and Sterling Moore.
Moore, a cornerback out of SMU, had private workouts with both the Raiders and the 49ers across the bay after his Pro Day earlier this year. He’s a hometown guy who grew up a Raiders fan, and made it his goal to make the team. At SMU, he was one of the most athletic guys on the team and ran a 4.55 at his pro day, before shaving off .05 when he ran for the Raiders, putting him at 4.50.
He was on the way up in regards to being in the public’s eye, but a knee injury sidelined him. Just four months removed from said surgery, he had his Pro Day and the Raiders have recognized his determination and ability by bringing him in. Back on his pro day, he didn’t do the shuttle drill or the broad jump, but he should be ready to go at this point.
Pelc is an interior lineman from North Carolina and is your typical hard-working undrafted free agent. He lacks all of the physical tools but plays with a lot of toughness and works as hard as anybody on the field. The Raiders have a lot of question marks on the offensive line and Pelc is the first of what will probably be multiple interior signings. Sports Illustrated has some analysis on him:
Pelc was productive and durable on the college level yet is a marginal athlete who lacks the physical skills for the next level. Getting the most from his abilities, he could make it as an inexpensive backup based on his versatility to play either guard spot.

Ben Gbadyu (OLB, Penn State)
Biography: Finished his senior season with 50 tackles after becoming a full-time starter. Posted 37 tackles as a junior in five starts and 25 tackles as a sophomore.
Positives: “Athletic, pursuit linebacker who makes plays sideline to sideline. Breaks down well, uses his hands to protect himself, and displays good movement skills. Gets depth on drops, can run with tight ends in coverage, and makes plays in all directions of the field.”
Negatives: Lacks strength at the point of attack and struggles taking on blocks from opposing receivers. More of a drag down tackler. Does not make a lot of plays on the ball.
Analysis: Gbadyu is an athletic pursuit linebacker who could be a reserve at the next level if he plays well on special teams.

Mankins to sign tender
Pats’ Logan Mankins to report on time
By Mike Reiss
ESPNBoston.com
Pro Bowl guard Logan Mankins, who held out the first half of last season, plans to sign his franchise tender and report to training camp on time with the rest of the New England Patriots, his agent said Tuesday.
“Early this morning, Logan spoke with Bill (Belichick) and both are very happy, happy to get started. Logan is looking forward to being with his teammates and coaches, with a fresh start,” agent Frank Bauer said.
Mankins and the Patriots have until Sept. 20 to work out a long-term contract, per the new labor deal.
Mankins was one of 10 named plaintiffs in the players’ antitrust lawsuit against the league that was settled Monday by the owners and NFLPA.
Mankins, 29, was a first-round draft pick of the Patriots in 2005. He has been to three Pro Bowls, including 2010, despite missing the first seven games due to a prolonged holdout.
Mankins and the Patriots were at odds last summer, when the guard said he hoped to be traded because of the slow pace of negotiations on a contract extension.
Mankins was a restricted free agent — a result of the NFL’s going from a salary-cap system to an uncapped year in 2010 — but did not sign his $3.26 million tender. That led to an extended standoff, with Mankins not reporting until the eighth game of the season. The Patriots sliced his tender to $1.54 million, which was prorated over the final nine games of the season.

Mason Brodine:
Kearney, Neb. – Former Nebraska-Kearney defensive end Mason Brodine (pronounced bro-deen) has signed a free agent contract with the NFL’s Oakland Raiders.
Several teams showed interest in Brodine, a 6-7, 255 lbs. native of Elm Creek. He projects as a defensive end, or tight end, at the professional level.
Over the past four seasons, Brodine racked up 155 tackles, including a school-record 23.5 sacks. A two-time all-region selection, he also earned first-team All-RMAC honors the past two seasons.
Brodine is the fifth Loper since 2001 to have signed a free agent contract, or receive a try out, with an NFL team. The others were receivers Richie Ross (2006) and Tyler McNitt (2008), tight end Joel Jacobs (2004) and offensive linemen Ryan Bachman (2004). In addition, Ross and quarterback Justin Coleman (2001) were invited to the NFL Draft Combine.

Ian Williams is a better fit for a 4-3 team even though he’s a nose tackle. Probably best used as a 2-down player, but he can make a difference in the run game and will make a lot of tackles. He can be the plug in the middle of a line.

if you want a qb to back up JC why not go up the 80 freeway to sac, and get culpepper. he is completely healthy, he has the huge arm and athleticism Davis loves. he would come cheap, and has played nfl ball at a very high level. in my mind he is the perfect back up qb. JC goes down to injury pep could step in and you still have a chance to win. he would be major upgrade over boller.

Overview
Missed remainder of senior season with a torn ACL in his right knee in the Temple game. Had started 17 straight games on the OL before his injury. Was starting at RT in 2010 after starting all 13 at RG in 2009. Suffered a stress fracture in his foot in 2007.
Strengths
Big, physical player with good experience against top-flight competition. Lunchpail player who plays with a chip on his shoulder and is a hard-worker. He’s a mauler inside a phone booth. Has long arms and uses them well to control and direct defenders. Shows good power.
Weaknesses
Underimpressive athlete who struggled at RT with speed rushers. Not a candidate to play outside in the NFL. Doesn’t have very good footwork and isn’t going to wow anyone on the move. Despite his strength, he doesn’t have much pop or jolt in his game. Troubling injury history.
Projection
Could get a shot to compete for a reserve interior line position, most likely as an UDFA following the 2011 NFL Draft.

the raiders arent looking for a qb of the future.
Volek isnt a candidate for anyones qb of the future, dixon is coming off a second major knee surgery, and seems to fit in well in pitt.
i doubt very highly you will find an upgrade over JC in the cuts or waived players, or in the ufda class.

JC is my starter – Boller is a fine #2 (and I suspect Huge agrees,) – no reason not to bring in a youngster and let Huge groom him for the future.
True, if the starter goes down, that would suck, but that’s no different than many other teams (see DAL – 2010). Its a risk I’m willing to take.

Free Agency Wish list
1. Bringing back Nnamdi – even if it means letting Miller (who I love) walk. Good tight ends come and go, but shutdown cornerbacks who can eventually be the next US president are once in a lifetimers.
2. Chad Johnson – probably the only WR on the market who can function as a #1 WR who can be had for a decent price tag.
3. Matching whatever offer my fellow Louisvillian Bush gets to ensure he returns this year.
4. More (ahem, better) linebacker depth
6. Letting Huff, Higgins, R.Brown, S.Williams, and Barnes all walk.

Miller is a fine player and an absolute warrior, but we are over the cap and in desperate need of OL help. I would love to see Todd Heap in town if we lose Miller. Miller would leave a huge hole in the offense since Al insists on wasting a starting receiver slot on DHB. That being said, a healthy Schillen could be huge for the offense. Miller, Ford, Mcfadden, Bush, Schillens would be potent if we could get some OL help.

Al has shown all the loyalty possible you can show Nnamdi. We offered that man a ridiculous deal that we luckily got out of because of those certain stat clauses. Imagine if he was on our books for one more year at the top 5 QB avg price tag? Well, scratch that, on 2nd thought, I wish he was on our books for one more year ’cause then we could probably trade him and at least get something in return if he does bounce on us.
Needless to say, he knows we want him, but we’re not gonna break the bank for a position the league doesn’t even let the players who play it play physical anymore. So if he stays, I’m the happiest man on Earth, and he climbs up the most popular Raiders ever list; but if he goes, farewell, and wish him the best.

Steve Corkran: He played at that level in a number of games last years. Naturally, his best games came when the Raiders ran the ball effectively. That tells me that, like most every other quarterback, he benefits from solid play around him.

Hahaha to post 526. I’m sure he will. I’ll rep the state hard, but can’t stand Kentucky truthfully. Calipari makes me sick. Most Louisville fans are the same way; well, they should be at least. That rivalry is as big as any in any sport. It’s like the whole state cheers for UK except for Louisville. Most of the old heads across the state will never respect UK for the fact they name their arean after Rupp and his racist behind
But yeah, I heard Ashley is a beast. I’ll hate to see him rockin’ that Kentucky blue. Wish Pitino would go hard after him.

If the Raiders could pull off some wizardry with the salary cap, Cromartie would be a great addition. Not the most willing tackler, but the perfect skill set for man coverage.

Everyone thought Veldheer was at least solid at LT for us last year. Take a deep breath and understand that he will be better in year 2.

Strengths
Instinctive player who recognizes routes quickly and recognizes between run/pass quickly. Takes good angles to the ball. A physical player who breaks down in space well and wraps up. Can dish out big hits as well.
Weaknesses
Does not possess the quick burst and explosiveness out of his breaks to consistently make plays on the ball. Limited range as a result. Doesn’t have the deep speed to run with receivers down the field or catch up if he makes a mistake. Stiff in the hips and will struggle to and run with receivers.
Projection
UDFA.

B,
Pass protection has been our issue and is what causes the most concern for a lot of the semi pros.
I’d argue that if you feel our OT and C situation is stable, then our pass protection should be better. Teams with solid play from the C and OTs usually fare pretty well in that ares.

July 26th, 2011 at 2:06 pm
“The names of Oakland Raiders undrafted free agent signings continue to trickle in.
In addition to the signings of wide receivers Sterling Moore and Eddie McGee, offensive lineman Alan Pelc and linebacker Bani Gbadyu, the Raiders have signed five others.
The team signed a pair of offensive lineman in Iowa State’s Ben Lamaak and Penn State’s Lou Eliades.
In addition the team also signed defensive end Mason Brodine from little known Nebraska-Kearney, Baylor linebacker Chris Francis, California (PA) wide receiver Derrick Jones, Auburn safety Zac Etheridge and Boston College fullback James McCluskey.
Lamaak, a center, was pretty excited about signing with the team.
“I’m officially an Oakland Raider,” he wrote on Twitter. “Camp at Napa Valley!!!””

Anyone ole lump? Jhill the olinemen are the smartest guys on the field. Naw bruh….hutchinson, mankins and faneca are sure lumps lol
July 26th, 2011 at 2:09 pm
Well, my point is, keep Bush. Don’t tender him and fail to match an offer so we can get a first round pick to pick another Jamarcus Darius-Gibson Huff. Bush is a solid starter who is under 28 years old. No first round pick in Al’s hands can guarantee something better than that.
July 26th, 2011 at 2:09 pm

Time for camp!

Michael Bush turned 27 about a month ago.
July 26th, 2011 at 2:14 pm
Every position has it’s top players, B.
Gallery and Carlisle = LUMPS.
We don’t need 8 million dollar OGs, imo.
Loper and Campbell should be able to run block and stop DTs and MLBs from collapsing the pocket.

Almost agree with ya 612. 28 is only 32 in RB years if you’ve got the year-by-year mileage. We all know Bush is fresh and ready to roll (& roll-over).
July 26th, 2011 at 2:15 pm
So far today Davis has added 10 camp fodder guys.BigTed,I don’t understand the excitement over the UDFA signings. All they are is bodies for camp, although I will admit, ever once in a while a gem shows up
July 26th, 2011 at 2:16 pm
LOL at not taking a 1st rd pick for a backup RB.
Bush would be outta here if I could find a team dumb enough to do that.
Take the first round pick and sign Ricky Williams or Will McGahee to be your BACKUP RB who could start 3 or 4 games a year.
July 26th, 2011 at 2:16 pm
Loper is the lump and campbell aint played yet….run block? They gotta pass block as well…..ESPEICALLY THEE RG CUZ HE GOES UP AGAINST THE UT. DO U NEED ME TO EXPLAIN WHAT UT IS AGAIN?
July 26th, 2011 at 2:17 pm
The Raiders’ UDFA signings so far have been subpar. There’s good talent still out there, but the Raiders failed to bring in anyone who could help the team immediately.
July 26th, 2011 at 2:17 pm
This is what I think our O-Line will look like:
Veldheer, Loper, Wiz, Carlisle and Campbell

July 26th, 2011 at 2:21 pm
Wow JHill?? Really? Really? You’d take McGahee or Ricky Williams over Michael Bush?
And a 1st rd pick is gold in the right hands, but you’d trust us with a first rounder over a proven young and fresh 250 lb agile back? Yeah, that might be smart if you’re playing Franchise mode on a video game, but the Raiders and first round picks (AGAIN for the 90th time), don’t mix.

Well, if I was your GM, you would’ve NEVER had to worry about Gallery or Russell.
Would not have signed Hall or Walker.
Would’ve never let Gruden walk.
Would have Woodson and Nnamdi starting at CB for you.
Seymour would still be playing base DE.
Shyyyyiiiiiddddd …
I’d have your support, no doubt in my mind.

July 26th, 2011 at 2:24 pm
Jhill…u would have me accept for th Gruden thing….i hate the wco
July 26th, 2011 at 2:26 pm
Seymour is a UT/LDE in a 4-3….he has no biz on the weakside at NT/RDE
July 26th, 2011 at 2:26 pm
Mike Bush may in fact be all you say he is, Bleeder.
BUT …
The Raiders use this guy as a backup RB. If Bush was our starter, or even got a significant role in the offense, I could see your point. I’m not saying he’s not a talented player at all. He’s USELESS to us on the bench though.
I’d absolutely take another 1st rd pick for a non starter. Williams and McGahee are just examples of guys who can fill a backup role.
July 26th, 2011 at 2:27 pm
DHB should be cut if he does not restructure. Compare him to other receivers in the division..jackson, Floyd, Lloyd, Bowe…He cannot hold any of their jocks yet he makes top 15 money. It is bad enough that he was a horrible waste of a top 7 pick, but Al compounds it by making a stater when he should not sniff the field. I am praying something happens with his contract at the very least. I would love him to get restructured and assume a Sam Williams type role on ST.

July 26th, 2011 at 2:30 pm
Dik-odor lololol
July 26th, 2011 at 2:30 pm
The Raiders are poor against the run because of a mismatch in philosophies between the front four and back seven.
If you remember, the Raiders were pretty terrible against the run with Seymour at DE, too.
July 26th, 2011 at 2:31 pm

Has Seymour played LDE with us? I don’t think he has. Bauce? What say you?

July 26th, 2011 at 2:34 pm
I love D-Mac as much as the next Raider fan, but if any of ya’ll think the homie is gonna hold up for another season, ya’ll are trippin’. But he will hold up with a horse like Bush running with him. Make it a 50/50 split in carries.
It’s beneficial from the business sense as well as to maximize their efforts. Bush is a monster if we unleash him, and if McFadden is somewhat limited in his carries, he won’t have any leverage in case he wants to hold out for more money or a raise in the near future, like most 20+ carry a game running backs do…..

July 26th, 2011 at 3:13 pm
Speaking of GM’s AL has been garbage for 8 straight years..2010 was our only decent draft..Barksdale may end up as Mario Henderson version 2.0. That was Al’s guy to that Kiffin knew was garbage and AL made him keep. This is a critical offseason as we have a tougher schedule ahead and issues at OLINE and WR. We could backslide to 10 plus losses if they FA’s are not signed and a few contracts restructured.
July 26th, 2011 at 3:14 pm
(scratch that, WILL miss 7 games a year)???
——————————————————-
Trade DMac then.
7 games missed?????
We have no shot at the division if DMac misses 7 games.

July 26th, 2011 at 3:17 pm
The Washington Redskins have agreed on compensation to trade veteran quarterback Donovan McNabb(notes) to the Minnesota Vikings.
Now, it’s a matter of seeing whether or not the Vikings can re-work McNabb’s contract to their suiting in order for the deal to go down, according to Jason La Canfora of NFL Network. That will require the Vikings to crunch some numbers with McNabb’s agent Fletcher Smith.
Otherwise, you could look at a scenario where the Redskins wind up having to dump McNabb. The Vikings probably will not be giving up much for the veteran quarterback. Some have speculated a seventh-round pick or a sixth at highest would get the deal done.
The Vikings don’t want to invest too much money in McNabb, either, not with Christian Ponder(notes), their quarterback of the future in place.

Don’t be an a$$ Hill. You know what you’re talking about more often than not. But this is one of those “not” times. I’m a D-Mac fan. But I know Bush is needed here more than another late 1st rounder (which is what we’d get for him if we tender him and don’t match) and he’s the perfect insurance for DMac. He keeps DMac healthy, and they should be splitting carries 50/50. But, we’ll more than likely have him, so no need to discuss anymore until that time.

1st round pick is WAY more than any team would dream of giving up for Bush.
And the Raiders could use a 1st round pick next year far more than a backup RB. Especially if they’re in the market for a QB, and help for that QB.

There were a few 4th and 5th-round prospects in there. Teams generally drafted for need instead of taking the best player available this year, likely because of the uncertainty of the lockout.

Honestly, it’s going to be very hard to do anything other than speculate. Teams have had such a long time, they’ve had a chance to put together something that looks like a draft board for free agents. Until names start really falling off on Friday, we’re just guessing. Every team is going to have to fool around with contract structures to make things work out — by this time next week, all the rosters will probably be set; then, they’ll start with the cutdowns. It will be interesting to see whether the Raiders focus more on offense or on defense.

I think Nnamdi’s value is overvalued considering his pay and influence on the entire game. Also, other FA CBs out there bring down his value even further. We might gay him back after all the talkings finished.
