Raiders re-sign DE Moss

The Raiders reportedly have agreed to terms on a one-year, $1.25 million contract with veteran defensive end Jarvis Moss.

The news comes courtesy of The Sports Xchange. Teams and veteran players are allowed to negotiate contracts right now, but they can’t make anything official until 3 p.m. on Friday.

Moss, who turns 27 on Aug. 3, appeared in five games for the Raiders last season. He recorded one sack for the Raiders during that time.

Moss played his first three full NFL seasons for the Denver Broncos, both as a linebacker and defensive end. He was released by the Broncos after nine games last season.

This is yet another sign of the Raiders master plan of re-signing most of their own free agents and then plugging in the holes with other free agents, while avoiding the costly signings of big-name, low-production players such as DeAngelo Hall, Kwame Harris, Gibril Wilson and Javon Walker from previous offseasons.

The is a good deal for the Raiders. Moss was looking legit if I recall at the end of the season. He may be your winner of the priest trophy.

p.s. leave my boy dhb alone will ya?

You should have posted a more cheeky title like “Moss resigns with Oakland” or Oakland brings Moss back” I bet you would have gotten a huge spike in traffic with everyone thinking it was Randy…

  • Just Fire Baby

Another one-trick pony, with great athleticism and flashes of brilliance, that lacks football instincts.

Agreed,JHill.I doubt we get involved until after the frenzy is over and things calm down.

YA,not everyone sees the same qualities in a player. Also,as an UDFA the player has a choice on where to go.It is possible even if Davis wanted some of the same guys you wanted, they didn’t want to sign here.

    ———-

Oh, I completely agree. Most UDFAs I’m sure would rather not sign here, even if they have the opportunity to compete for a legitimate gig.

Still, when I see a productive 6’6 275lb DE/DT (with room to grow), especially when d-line depth is a need for the Raiders, it’s a shame seeing the kid go to a division rival.

Same with the 6’8, 330lb OT the Chiefs got (the Raiders apparently had him in for a visit).

  • priesttj

I for one am gald Moss got re-signed so we can take a good look at a kid who may have just turned the corner skills wise. He has some extremely long arms and quick hands he just neeeded to add to his upperbody strength. I think he has real ability to be an edge rusher.

  • JLofty

Gibril Wilson led the league in tackles one year didn’t he? That’s not low production.
It’s all about the OLine. That’s what I want to hear about.

  • lefty12

YA,I don’t believe the team thinks we lack d-line depth. They believe we are set on the line or have a second tier lineman in mind for FA.

Forget about Yanda, He resigned with the Ravens

    Tavaris Jackson headed to Seattle?

What happened to Cable bringing Gardowski in?

    Also, JFB ….

Colts took a pass on your boy. Looks like that lobbying he did with Manning didn’t pay off.

  • priesttj

T’pin I had forh=gotten about Moss, he is exactly what I think of as an underdog who has a chance to hit big.

  • guest123

Couldn’t re-signing Moss have been lumped in there with the UDFA signings? Sometimes less is more.

    Dangnit COrkran!

    Lienart to Seattle

    Devin Aromashadu to Minnesota.

    CJ2K holdout?

NFL Network’s Mike Lombardi reports that Chris Johnson “will under no circumstances” report to Titans training camp without a new contract.
Lombardi expects Johnson to “dig in” with regard to his contract stance, targeting a monster deal for a running back. It’s worth noting that NFL Network’s Jason La Canfora and the Nashville Tennessean reported similar things in June, so the story is legit. The Titans could potentially use an Adrian Peterson extension as a jump-off point for negotiations. Johnson is known to be in search of a “history” deal. His current salary is a measly $800,000.

They should be able to. The Bucs have already signed 3rd round pick LB Mason Foster, and are going to dump Barrett Ruud on the street.

No, I’m sure they don’t, especially after re-signing Moss and Henderson.

Scott is coming off a torn ACL, though. One more warm body certainly wouldn’t hurt. Especially a young kid with some upside.

Although I would like to see more of Bryant at DE. A long, quick edge defender at 6’6 290lbs? If he can learn the intricacies of the position, the Raiders could have themselves quite the valuable asset.

Hasselbeck is headed to Tennessee to mentor Locker.

LaCanfora’s been running with that since yesterday.

Really dont expect FA signings of bigger names judging from the past of late, but I sort of wanted to see Lienhart and see if he has something to show. Other than that, I have never believed Al was going to play the FA game, just develope the guys he drafts.

To many stings in the past.

So Nnamdi wants to go somewhere where he can work on his post football career of acting? Not comfortable with the young guys or CJ at starting corner in our scheme but if we spent the $ on Miller, Huff, and Santana Moss or Sidney Rice, I’d be good with it

  • JLofty

Javon offered to give his back…

  • YoungAmerican

Moss got re-signed by the Redskins.

If Miller chooses to leave Oakland, I’d like to see Heap in his place along with another weapon for JC.

Still, I think Al is going to make Zach Miller a very wealthy young man.

  • Heavy Machinery

It will be interesting to see what Davis rolls out to the field on opening day. I think he’s learned quite a bit from the past eight seasons and really has turned the corner.

It says a lot that he isn’t going after the bigger names like raider said, just going to develope the draft picks and the rest of the team from within.

I for one am actually quite impressed with Davis and thinks he’s done about everything a gm can do to get the team where they need to be at this point.

The talent seems to be there, now the work making them great begins. Lets get this season rollin and bring it on!

  • inonewordraider

Dang S Moss would’ve been nice. We need ZMiller and we need a big time receiver not already on our roster if we want to win this year. We’d still have to hope our OL holds up, but DHB won’t be a #1 this year Schilens we can’t rely on and Ford is a not a complimentary piece but add Rice for instance and if our OL can hold up our O could be top notch

  • http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/526101/AlDavis1_medium.jpg KoolKell

The biggest question isn’t the player talent. It’s whether he will allow his Head Coach to coach.

  • Heavy Machinery

I do hope Davis keeps Nnamdi, and I’ll tell you why.

So he had no numbers over there at cb because nobody threw his direction. I understand that doesn’t look good on paper.

But if anybody wants to look at stats and see what teams did to the other parts of the field, well now you know why: easy pickins folks.

Not a pleasant thought not having Nnamdi.

  • inonewordraider

good to have a guy like J Moss for cheap: lotta potential, keeps em hungry, and low risk. Shoulda signed Routt and Wimbley for a lot less than we did for same reasons and for cap reasons

    ___________________________________________

I think Davis has been beat down pretty hard the last few seasons, and I think he is a little tired. You can tell by the fact he isn’t a major player in the FA game as of late, and I think he trusts Hue more than he has with others in the past. I think he went after better coaches and leass after bigger named players.

Lots of numbers to add up and form a conclusion as to why I think Hue and all the coaches will have a little more leash here than before.

  • RaiderFanFromJersey

I expect (hope) Mr. Davis to restructure some deals of some of our big salary hits (i.e. Kelly, DHB…) to make up for the big salary cap overage as opposed to making a bunch of cuts like the other teams are. I don’t know how exactly he does it but no matter how big of salary cap trouble we are reportedly in, we make it work with minimal cuts. Here’s to Big Al working his majic again this year.
