Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer just reported that the Philadelphia Eagles have signed Raiders three-time Pro Bowl cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha.
The 49ers, Houston Texans, New York Jets and Dallas Cowboys were rumored to be in the hunt for the player considered the prize of this year’s free agent class.
Somewhere in the process, the Eagles jumped in and sealed the deal. Thus officially ends the eight-year Raiders career of Asomugha. He reportedly received a five-year deal that guarantees him $25 million from the Eagles. The Raiders gave Routt a three-year contract in March that guarantees him $20 million.
That the Raiders didn’t re-sign Asomugha isn’t a surprise. They took steps during the offseason to gird themselves against the prospect of playing without him for the first time since 2002.
Now the battle to see who replaces Asomugha kicks into high gear, with veteran Chris Johnson the early front-runner and young players such as Walter McFadden, Jeremy Ware, Chimdi Chekwa and DeMarcus Van Dyke in the mix.
