Free agency signings now can be announced

By Steve Corkran
Friday, July 29th, 2011 at 3:12 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Teams have had the past 72 hours or so to negotiate contracts with unrestricted free agents. However, they weren’t allowed to finalize any deals until 3 p.m. today

Raiders head coach Hue Jackson cautioned people to be patient and not read too much into anything that transpired until we reached this point.

Well, we’re here now. So, expect the Raiders to announce a flurry of signings in the coming days, perhaps as soon as today. Remember, any player signed cannot practice until Aug. 4.

The Raiders have only 72 players on their roster right now. They are permitted to carry as many as 90 through the end of August, when rosters have to be pared to 75. Only 65 players participated in practice Wednesday and about the same is expected out on the field today.

That’s fine for the fringe players seeking to make an impression and, perhaps, make the 53-man roster. It’s not so good for the veterans, who are required to take more snaps than they are accustomed to.

“Yeah, it’s strange,” defensive tackle Tommy Kelly said. “You feel it in the reps. You got to take a whole bunch of more reps. But in the end of the day, it’s going to get us in shape a little quicker and we’re going to be ready to play a little quicker, especially the practice coach is running. It’s rough, but it’s what we got to go through. We need that anyway.”

Jackson said several players capitalized on the added reps in practice Thursday.

“There’s no question,” Jackson said. “Again, as I said (Wednesday) night in our team meeting, every practice has a purpose, especially for a young guy because pretty soon all the reps you get might get cut down as we continue to move forward. Some guys flashed today. Some guys showed up, some undrafted guys were battling in there. That’s what it’s all about. Come to work every day with a purpose and come in here and try to get better. That’s what our guys are doing.”

The Eagles have signed cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha.

  46. bcz24 Says:

Vick breaks his leg in preseason and the iggles go 6-10…. lol

  47. Plunketthead Says:

    hahaha nice call Bcz

  48. RaiderDuck Says:

For what it’s worth, that’s a TON of $$$ to throw at a guy who, while an awesome cover corner, hasn’t really improved the defenses he’s played on and is not a vocal team leader.

I’d love to have Nnamdi back, mind you, but if the choice was between him and Seymour, I’d take Big Rich…

  49. Born with a Patch Says:

I work with a Die Hard Eagle… this sucks. He’ll prob keep bringing it up

    Really? Good!

  51. aig-raiders Says:

25 mil guaranteed = to 12.5 mil per year for first 2 years. We paid Routt how much? $11mil per year?

Not sure about those numbers but WTF.

  52. personal foul Says:

Damn. So much for looking for a ride to the Super Bowl, eh Nam? Be interesting to see what the terms were.

  53. priesttj Says:

Nnamdi may put them over the top if they can get Jackson back in camp.

    BREAKING NEWS

Philadelphia just changed their name to the Philly Heat. Hey Lebron call Aso and tell him how it worked out for him. In unrelated news Antonio Rogers-Cromartie legally changes his name to DeAngelo Hall Jr. and the Raiders sign Asante Samuel.

Nnamdi goes to Eagles … Swooop … for 5 years, $60 million – 25 guaranteed (Routt got 20)

For 5 mil difference, we get Routt rather than Nnamdi. Eff me. 5 mil is nothing for a billion dollar business.

  58. Plunketthead Says:

Vick goes 3-0. Breaks his leg in game 4 and Vince leads them to 6-10.
Reid gets fired and Eagles get dominated by Skins, boys and Giants for the next 5 years

  59. Born with a Patch Says:

    5 years 60 mill

  60. Kirk Says:

So now the Eagles won’t be able to stop the run?

  61. inonewordraider Says:

I don’t wish him the best because he had a choice. Guys like T Howard and K Morrison I wish those guys the best

  62. RedneckRaider Says:

So seriously… what happens to Asante Samuel now?

  63. Lowdown_in_Beijing Says:

    Miller time?

    Gaither?

    Derick Fenner?

  64. Plunketthead Says:

Nnamdi was expecting more, lots more

  65. RAIDERMAN99 Says:

Beagles already have DRC and Assante.

Someone is getting traded or moved to safety.

  66. CuzImaRaider Says:

Derick Fenner, ahahahahh! Thats awesome! For as crappy an offseason as this might as well be!!

  67. personal foul Says:

Freaking guy went to philly essentially for Routt money??? There has got to be more to this than we’ll ever know.

  68. omniscience Says:

We knew this was coming Al tried to keep him he left Al was paying him 17 mil for 1 year but he did not make 1 int, 1 fumble recovery or 1 sack so contract was voided Rod Woodsen will turn our Rooks into Good Corners what skeem do Eagles play? Aso is a cover guy only noone threw his way Rivers did and burned him or a PI not impressed remember his first 3 years. Heard we signed Gaither can we confirm

  69. CuzImaRaider Says:

Yeah bummer, I’d rather have #21 and dvd/chekwa than routted26 and cj37 almost anyday!

  70. alex7 Says:

Can you blame Nnamdi for wanting to win, even if he could have gotten more money here?

Eagles throw ANYONE into the QB position nowadays and they turn into stars.

V.Young has a 31-18 lifetime record as a starter. I think Reid knows what he’s doing, even if/when Vick gets hurt.

  71. beach Says:

Nice to have the NFL back. It’s time to focus on signing our tight end Zach Miller and our bruising back Michael Bush!!! We need this Gaither to check out healthy and get him in to camp. I have no problem letting Nnamdi go if we can solidify our offensive line, and perhaps pick up another free agent.

  72. beach Says:

Nnamdi is number one at cover corner, but not even top ten at the cornerback position as a playmaker. I wish him luck, but he is overrated. Eagles Super Bowl favorite because of him? No chance.
