Raiders sign DT Hill, cut LB Scott

By Steve Corkran
Saturday, July 30th, 2011 at 3:26 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Just as we’re headed to the field for the first padded practice of training camp, the Raiders announce the signing of undrafted defensive tackle Derrick Hill. He played his college ball at Cal.

In other news, the Raiders released linebacker Quentin Scott.

Practice begins at 3:30 and runs until 5:30-5:45 p.m. From there, we get coach Hue Jackson in a news conference and then players for interviews afterward. There will be a lenghty post about the highlights from practice only minutes after we get through with interviews, just as has been the case the past few days.

Who the heck is Quentin Scott????

  10. DKnight007 Says:

Finally! The Raiders make a move that I thought was important and resign OT Khalif Barnes!

He should compete immediately at RT and be used as a backup at LT if necessary. He can be that tackle eligible that he was last year and be in elephant packages.

Gaither needs to lose weight before he signs on and then they can sign him on the cheap maybe.

Raiders need to sign WR Malcolm Floyd, LB Channing Crowder, and resign Z Miller!

Then sign another O-Linemen at a bargain.

Good move to pickup Edwards and see what he can bring to the table at QB and as competition.

Take it for what it’s worth, but #Raiders Day 3 OL (r to l) is Barksdale, Carlisle, Baby Wiz, Loper and Veldheer

  63. TerrapinRaider Says:

So accd’g to Vittorio lineup right now is Veldheer-Loper-Wiz-Carlisle-Barksdale (and Barksdale is holding up well vs Houston).

Does Barnes get to practice or does he have to wait Aug 4th?

Branch @ FS, Mitchell @ SS. As I expected. This is what you want.

  64. 89052RAIDER Says:

Wimbley was a complete steal last year. he was a top 15 pick in 2006 that the Browns cut bait with too soon. He wasn’t a sexy signing last year, but it was like getting first round talent for nothing.

  65. RaiderRetribution Says:

Mr. Chekwa’s shoulder popped out; there goes my rookie of the year prediction

  66. CuzImaRaider Says:

  67. RaiderRetribution Says:

all FA’s signed even with their original teams have to wait until Aug 4th

this will give more snaps to the younger players anyway

Barnes will enjoy his final week off

  68. Dakota Says:

I have yet to see one area of improvement on the team this offseason, other than at the HC position.

Maybe Edwards is better than Garbagekowski? Hey, that will get us closer to the playoffs.

Unless McClain Veldheer and McClain dramatically improve, and DHB suddenly turns into a football player, I don’t see much chance for improvement on last year’s record.

Unless of course Chaz and the undrafted free agents save the day!

  69. PurpleDrank81 Says:

Barnes does have to wait until the 4th..

  70. PurpleDrank81 Says:

  71. 89052RAIDER Says:

I am glad Al has learned from the Javon Walker-Deangelo Hall-G Wilson debacle in 2008. We have far more quality drafted talent with a few solid FA signing mixed in now.

  74. TerrapinRaider Says:

But Dakota – The HC change is a HUGE change!

We have not been making huge FA splashes in recent years and our team has gotten better each year as we focused on the draft and coaching up our players.

  75. BeAlwaysUrselfCommittingtoExcellence2011 Says:

    YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH

  76. RaiderRetribution Says:

Mr. Barnes and Mr. Satele were the two OLinemen I hoped we would resign; 50% of the way there

I think it is safe to say that 2 line positions are locked (barring injury and setbacks in performance at camp)

    Mr. Vehldeer at Left Tackle
    Mr. Wisniewski at Center

    the two most important positions!

    I’m excited about this.

We know we will have Mr. Loper and Mr. Barnes as backups if they do not earn one of the other starting positions.

  77. PlunkforHOF Says:

Dakota- As I knock wood, I’m hoping for a huge step up from the Chaz/Murphy/Ford contingent. If Chaz stays healthy ( a big if) then DHB is a non-factor.

Veldheer, McClain, Houston, Shaunessy, Murphy, Ford, Branch, Mitchell, W and D McFadden, DHB, Reece, N Miller, Bush, Ware

I think we can realistically expect all of these guys to have gotten better. Add to that JC more comfortable in the system with more chemistry hopefully… We just need at least one of those young corners to step it up and sign us a guard to plug between V and W

    ===============

Just watched that game. Totally mismanagement by Lame Kiffin. Long drives by Buffalo saw us field scrubs on D in goal line situations and we paid for it.

Kirk Morrison had a chance to help seal the game by stopping Marshawn Lynch end around a 3rd and long and whiffed like a huffer.

Bills drove down and scored on a 90 yd drive.

Gross and good riddance Morrison. Nice to see you whiffing last year in Jacksonville like you used to do here. Yick!

Absolutley agree!! I am kinda feeling like another former first rounder comming of a down season, as did Kam Wimbley is Ernie Sims. I know we have Goethel and Groves, but I think some healthy competition would be nice, especially for a guy who might have something to prove!! And I for one am not sold on either Goethel or Groves as good on the edge.

With Chaz the only question about reaching those numbers is if he can stay healthy… Murphy has shown plenty of flashes that he is capable of being a 1000 yard rec with 8 TDs… those stats aren’t that incredible, you know…. and Ford had nearly 500 yards his rookie season and has been toasting peeps in camp thus far… why is it so hard to imagine one of these guys getting 1k and 8 TDs? now if you had said 1500 yards and 14 TDs I could understand you being so incredulous.

    ——-

Oh, I completely agree. For all those reasons, he’d be a steal for the Raiders.

Jacoby Ford needs someone to draw coverage away from him, because DHB isn’t THAT good of a decoy and Chaz can’t be depended on. Murphy can’t draw that kind of coverage, and Moore is a question mark at this point.

For all of Braylon’s faults, he produces. Even TO drops a lot of balls, but he makes up for it with big plays. The Raiders simply do not have a receiver of Braylon’s caliber on the roster.

He’s still young, too. So why not lock up a young, talented player when his value is low? Especially when it will instantly make the team much better. And remember the boost Santonio Holmes gave the Jets when he came back from suspension? It might not be quite to that level with Braylon if he gets suspended, if the Raiders struggle early and get Edwards back four games in? Immediate boost to the team.

It probably won’t happen, but the Raiders should be seriously thinking about it.

Yes this is fact and I’m not lying go meet him….anyhow said Tedford isnt a leader and punks out in big moments. He told me a head coach of a football team must make every player believe at any and every point what he is saying is the truth. If ya dont have that then you dont have a head coach.

Im a Raiders fan, never woulda made that kinda prediction against my team. In fact, cant really think of a team in history that I thought would be capable of beating the Raiders 70-0. Certainly not the Jets.

And yes, at the most, I can see SD being 3-5 by the time they play us, assuming they beat the Vikings. I see them losing against NE, NY, KC, MIA, and GB before they play us. Very well could lose both KC games, and the MINN game as well. Either way, theyll have a losing record at that point. The Raiders, on the other hand,I see being no worse than 5-3 by that time, if you assume a loss to NY, NE, and HOU, which all are I believe, winnable games, Im just giving a worse case scenario. Im not here to troll or bicker back and forth. Im just making observations as a Raiders fan and discussing them on this blog.

The same way people give players leeway for their poor performance because they played for the Raiders, they need to do that for the Bills, cause theyve been garbage for a long while. That said, I dont think enough is being made of Trent Edwards signing. Cause I know everyone remembers the Calvin Johnson #1, Trent Edwards rd 2 scenario that was being thrown around. Things may have been a lot different at this point, or maybe not. Who knows. But Trent Edwards was always thought of as a smart player, better than the team he played for, even going back to when he came out of Stanford and they were horrible. A lot of experts thought he could have been a 1st rounder had he went anywhere else, but playing for that horrible team knocked him to the second. I think hes capable of pushing Campbell for his spot. Not saying thatll happen, just saying I think hes capable.

Oakland pushes ahead with new stadium plan for Raiders, solo or shared

    Angela Woodall
    Oakland Tribune
    Posted: 07/29/2011 03:54:25 PM PDT
    Updated: 07/29/2011 07:06:21 PM PDT
Oakland officials didn’t let the NFL lockout stand in the way of their plans to transform the city’s gray and sagging Coliseum into a new stadium and entertainment district that some supporters are calling Oakland Live.

The clock started ticking on the plans when Gov. Jerry Brown threatened to commandeer redevelopment money. But the pace really picked up when it looked like the NFL deal sealed this week could help deliver money for the project. The city had already begun to buy up land to “control the destiny” of the area, which is part of the Coliseum Redevelopment Project district, said Oakland City Councilmember Larry Reid.

“But to get there, we have to spend money to show there is a vision,” said Reid, whose Elmhurst-East Oakland district includes the Coliseum area.

The aging complex is co-owned by the city and Alameda County. But the city now controls all the land between Coliseum Way and San Leandro Street except several parcels occupied by, among others, Denny’s, a church and a trucking company.

Then the council authorized $4 million in redevelopment funds this month to pay for a design plan and an environmental impact report.

“If we don’t do something, we might end up losing all our franchises,” Reid said.

He has long cherished the plan to create Oakland Live, named and modeled after the sprawling $2.5 billion entertainment complex in Los Angeles next to Staples Center.

He appears to have the support
    Advertisement
    of the Raiders.

The team has backed a redevelopment plan since 2009 when the Raiders and city began to evaluate the chances of success. The support has not changed, said Raiders Chief Executive Officer Amy Trask in an email interview.

The Coliseum, she said, is a “tremendous location,” centrally located and accessible from all over the Bay Area by public transportation, including BART.

As for the 49ers, she said the Raiders are keeping an open mind about sharing a stadium as details for a Santa Clara facility unfold.

Prospects of a two-team facility dimmed after 49ers owner Jed York backed off this week. He said the team can build a stadium in Santa Clara without sharing with the Raiders because the NFL is offering a handout large enough to satisfy several teams. The league announced plans to create a financing pool teams could dip into for loans needed to build a new stadium. The NFL would put 1.5 percent of all league revenue earned in a year into the pool. That could generate as much as $150 million annually based on NFL revenues of $10 billion a year, which the league is close to earning already.

The Raiders could play in Santa Clara without needing voter approval.

Conversely, if the Santa Clara deal falls apart, O.co Coliseum could be an option for the 49ers.

The Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum Board, which oversees operations at the Coliseum complex, commissioned an analysis independent of the Oakland Live proposal.

“(The) addition of the 49ers dramatically increases the economic viability of the project,” according to an October 2010 report by Minnesota-based Conventions, Sports & Leisure, which the city of San Jose hired to analyze the potential A’s ballpark in that city.

According to the analysis, there is $145 million in outstanding principal on a Coliseum bond debt that helped pay for renovations demanded by Raiders owner Al Davis in 1996. The debt will have to be resolved before the stadium can be torn down to make way for a new one.

Because the Oakland stadium plan involves redeveloping the surrounding area, the project could also be eligible for federal funding if it can be classified as a transit village, according to At-Large Councilmember Rebecca Kaplan.

She announced the new stadium plans on July 20, catching some of her fellow council members off guard because they didn’t know the stadium had become a definite part of the plan. She also surprised Coliseum board members.

Commissioner Scott Haggerty said he knew nothing of the plan, but supports the concept of a new stadium. The A’s, who share the existing stadium with the Raiders, may have to be factored into the plan if Major League Baseball blocks the team from moving to San Jose.

Co-owner Lew Wolff said this week by telephone that he has no information about the plans.

“We’ve seen nothing,” he said. The Coliseum area, he added, is a great site, but a new stadium would not persuade him to stay in Oakland.

Reid said the plan doesn’t include a new arena for the Golden State Warriors, who have a contract to play at the Coliseum until 2017. But the new owners have made it clear they want a new facility in Oakland — or possibly in San Francisco.

The next step is to issue a request for proposals from companies to perform an environmental impact report. Then Reid and Kaplan will have to convince the rest of the Coliseum board and county supervisors.

“We’re just at the starting point,” Reid said.
