WR Ford suffers broken hand (updated)

By Steve Corkran
Sunday, July 31st, 2011 at 5:46 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Raiders coach Hue Jackson just revealed to the media in his Sunday news conference that second-year wide receiver Jacoby Ford suffered a broken left hand and could be out a couple of weeks.

The Raiders are counting upon Ford to be one of their primary playmakers this season on the heels of his stellar rookie season last season.

Ford appeared to hurt his hand during practice Saturday. He was spotted with his left hand wrapped afterward but did not speak with the media.

“He broke his left hand and (it’s) unfortunate,” Jackson said. ”Everybody’s looking, going, ‘Oh gosh, here we go.’ Jacoby Ford will be fine, O.K. And, again, those are the things that happen. But he’s good. He’ll be back. I feel very good about it. He’s good, his spirits are good and we’ll be rolling soon.”

Ford’s absence gives younger receivers more of an opportunity to press their case for inclusion on the 53-man roster.

Broke free from the player interviews to deliver this news. Headed back down to conduct some player interviews. I shall be back at you in awhile.

  7. crister Says:

Can we be absolutely sure that DHB hasn’t been playing with two broken hands these passed two years?

  8. TheGeneral Says:

Damn hopefully he will be ready but rest him we need him. And i want to get cromartie not comfortable with CJ37 Cro would bring that attitude and swagger Hue loves.

    Injuries happen but this sucks…

  10. J Hill Says:

    Bummer!

#1 thing I was hoping for was for us to be healthy.

Wouldn’t be surprised to see a WR option signed now.

  11. TheGeneral Says:

Panic mode now its def time to bring in Floyd

  12. GoodOle00 Says:

  14. Just Win Baby Says:

Louis Murphy had more recrptions for more yards than any of our WRs last season. He’s 6′2, Ford is 5′9. It seems more likely to me that Murphy could be the WR who becomes the go to guy this year. I think I will make that prediction – Murphy will be Jason Campbell’s number one reciever this season.

  15. big pep Says:

so much for all this hard nose, oklahoma drill, beat each others azzez in camp. you can count on chaz to be next.

  16. lefty12 Says:

I’m not a fan of the J-E-T-S,Jets,Jets,Jets so I hope we just are in the Cromartie sweeps to jack up the price they have to pay him.We drafted 4 CBs the last two drafts.Lets put them out there, see who wins the job,and roll with him.I’m glad we haven’t been bringing in a lot of others teams headaches/cast-offs.Have faith in who we’ve been picking.Unless we can get a superstar, pass.

How “explosive” was our offense when we played legit d’s like the steelers, 49ers, Colts, Titans, and Dolphins?

Ted, the chiefs d was weak,

Funny how you claim the 9ers d was legit, but the Cheifs D was weak, yet they both were about the same.

Also funny how you have no response to us beating SD – even though they had the #1 D overall…

  18. CMon Man Says:

    Just Fire,

Agree with you on Louis Murphy….

Lefty had good post too….leave Cromartie and his drama and overpaid compensation alone.

If the Front 7 does its job…won’t matter who’s playing in the backfield

  19. CMon Man Says:

The Raiders traded Nnamdi for Seymour and Wimbley.

Thats just great. Hope 2 weeks means 2 weeks and not a nagging 4.

Time for DHB ‘the toothache’ to strap it on and nut it up

  28. lefty12 Says:

JHill-good point. This may require us to get another WR.The question is will it be a name or a camp body?

    You’re doing great man…good work.

Hopefully Miller has done the same.

  32. lefty12 Says:

Honestly,Fords hand doesn’t bother me if the coach says its a 2 week deal.I’d like to hear more about the state of the Oline-how they look, who’s playing where, and who looks sharp and who doesn’t.

  33. Raiders for life Says:

Anyone know how Ford hurt/broke his hand? If it was from one of the DB’s, Raiders don’t need Cro.

  34. PlunkforHOF Says:

Hey Steve! C’mon man there’s got to be more than just the news about Ford today.

  35. lefty12 Says:

Steve has been doing a good job,IMO.However,I’d like to see him give us transcripts of the coaches media sessions like ‘Jer’ used to do.They weren’t always informative, but they were usually good reads.

  36. Culebra Says:

    No to Cro.

ever since he whiffed on that shonn greene touchdown in the playoffs against SD he’s been one of my least favorite players in the league. Notice the Jets weren’t exactly DYING to resign him.

  37. lefty12 Says:

Time to get the ‘Q’ going.Later fellow Raider fans.

  39. aig-raiders Says:

crap. Nothing good ever comes out of a broken bone. I’m sure it will heal but it will be on Ford’s mind just like Murphy started getting gun shy after breaking his collar bone last year.

  40. plataynegro Says:

What’s up with Huff not fielding other offers? I would kinda like to know what his market value is before we give him a huge contract!

I hope Jacoby will be fine. I was hoping to compare him as a faster T. Brown. Big shoes to fill but you all know what I mean.

  42. omniscience Says:

Huff claims had conract waiting to get under cap now we need Miller the Raiders signings started before the Lockout remember everyone making fun of the Raiders for signing so many players without knowing what was going on thats why they are sitting back now and letting all these other teams lose alot of their players or pick up a few washed up Vets our Team still Intact Exsample Niners LOL

  43. aig-raiders Says:

    Raiders for Life,

I was skeptical on Ford but dude is like a Steve Smith from Carolina imo. Strong as a pitbull and fast like a mofo. On top of that, he got solid football skills. Unlike DHB, he can track the ball and fight for it. When Steve Smith was younger, he was deadly and I compare Ford to him, except stronger.

  62. J Hill Says:

    ——————————————————

    Wow!

Well, like most GMs (judging by the lack of offers from ANY team), I’ll have to disagree. Pass catching TEs are a dime a dozen.

More importantly, doesn’t everyone want to see our WRs lead the team in catches? Wouldn’t you like to see a guy like Ford running the underneath routes instead of a TE?

I’d rather have a TE who can block, and give Miller’s touches to DMac and Reece outta the backfield, or a WR running underneath routes.
