Raiders restructure LB Wimbley’s contract, free up cap room (updated)

By Steve Corkran
Monday, August 1st, 2011 at 4:36 pm in Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders finalized the restructuring of linebacker Kamerion Wimbley’s contract, which gets them out from under the $11.3 million figure they guaranteed him by making him their franchise tag player.

The news comes courtest of Fox Sports’ Adam Caplan, who reports Wimbley signed a five-year, $48 million deal, with $29 million guarantee.

“The new contract has to be earned, so I definitely look forward to the opportunity to go out and playing and earning every bit of the contract,” Wimbley said

In the process, the Raiders were able to lessen the cap liability for 2011, which gives them more room to sign players such as tight end Zach Miller and other free agents.

Wimbley did not practice today because the new deal he signed lumps him in with the other free agents who signed contracts since the lockout ended. That means he won’t be allowed to practice again until Thursday.

Raiders coach Hue Jackson was effusive in his praise of Wimbley.

“Kamerion Wimbley, new Raider, free agency,” Jackson said. “It’s one of our signings. Write that down everybody. No, that’s what it is. … Again, it’s just our organization continuing to lock up a good young talent. Kamerion Wimbley, what a terrific few days of practice he was having and then, all of a sudden, we got the deal done. Now, all of a sudden, he’s a free agent. But he’s here. He’s ours.”

Jackson said he always has liked Wimbley from his days with the Cleveland Browns, when Jackson’s Bengals and Ravens had to face him twice a season.

“I know what he is,” Jackson said. “He’s a tremendous player, a tremendous young player. I know he has nothing but an unbelievable upside ahead of him. Nine sacks a year ago, I expect more than that, more of that, and he’ll do that for this organization.”

Wimbley, 27, is entering his sixth NFL season and second with the Raiders. He led the Raiders in sacks last season and is counting upon even bigger things this season.

“There’s so many areas I feel like I can  get better in,” Wimbley said. ”I’m working on that every day. I’m just taking it one day at a time and going in and watching film and  making corrections and coming out here and working on that and perfect the craft daily.”

Cam had a great year, but Miller was more deserving of getting “over” paid. When will these ridiculous contracts end?

  6. Mistic1 Tha Supavillain Says:

Uncle Al does it again!!!! Kam is a very unique player, his skill set lends a flexibility to this defense that few players can match. Around the leauge plenty of guys think they can play lb and then on third down put their hand in the ground, but only a handful of those guys can actually do it well. As a hybrid player, that can play the elephant and the outside linebacker he is a specialist that was a main catalyst for our pass rush. he still young and just now hitting his physical peak. I like this deal a lot.

If I were Zach, I’d hold out for Hubba Bubba and a Freddy B.

  8. raiderinparadise Says:

I like Kam but that contract makes him 5th highest paid LB in the league. With that said he better play like a Harrison, Beason, Willis.

  9. 89052RAIDER Says:

This contract is a symptom of the disease that has plagued the organization for 8 years. Why did we Tag Wimbley? By doing so, Al forced himself into grossly over paying him in order to free space. Not tagging him in the first place would have been the most prudent move,

  10. KoolKell Says:

29 million guranteed sounds like a lot of money for Wimbley.

20 million guranteed soulds like a lot of money for Stanford Routt, too.

Neither has been consistent in their careers, so far.

By losing Nnamdi and Miller, I guess old man Al still wants to see a half empty Coliseum when they are at home huh?

    ——————————————————

We’ll have a half empty Colesuem due to the fact that Raiders fans like you only go when things are on the up!! Just like Cowboys fans route for the Cowboys, and New England fans jump on the wagon, and of late all the new found Jets fans, because of the big name signings and so forth!. If I lived in Oakland I’d have season tickets and go see everygame, just for the atmosphere, the parking lot experiences, and cuz I loves me some Raiders. Even when things look bleek, phuck, I’d pay the money for a ticket just to ride the BART in!

9 fkn sacks got this guy this contract? WTF. The only way I see this working out is if al lumped a big sum of the guarantee into year 3 (2014) when the new tv deal will be negotiated causing a significant bump in the cap. This ‘more cap friendly deal’ blows my mind

  32. HowieLongsNeckPad Says:

the reason the deal is 5th highest amoung LB is b/c the money keeps rising. after next contract he will be 6th and so on. and as far as miller ya hes great and as a raider fan will also remember his play but im ok with losing him and getting a true #1 WR…. as long as that happens

  52. 89052RAIDER Says:

You have to wonder who is negotiating these deals with Al….He needs some real help, not Trask or Hererra.

  53. Mistic1 Tha Supavillain Says:

Wmibly contrcat vs.Miller contract or is it?

1.) Does one signing preclude the other? Absolutley not. We dont know what Davis offered to miller. we dont know how much miller wants. is miller pulling a gallery and asking for too much?. The bottom line is davis offered what he feels is fair, that may have nothing to do with how much another player is being paid.

2.) Who brings more to the dance? Trying to find a player that does what wimbly does is extremely difficult. Miller on the other hand is a one dimensional tight end. His value is catching passes, but you could bring in a guy that has comparable hands, and could be a better blocker, for less money.

value for value, kam is the guy you cant afford to lose. you could down grade a full step at tight end and still have a very good offense.

  54. plataynegro Says:

Dors anyone else think this says something about Miller’s foot?

This is proof that Al wont let one of “his” guys go unless something is wrong! A TE with bad feet is as bad as a T(Gaither) with a bad back!

  64. Mistic1 Tha Supavillain Says:

Kam is being under valued in here today. everyone is stuck on his sack totals, and i understand why. 9 sacks is very good and any team must account for his pass rush. He can improve that number and get into double digits. How ever his pass rush is only part of his game. he was decent in the run game, and his coverage skills were vastly under rated before this season. Im telling you it is not easy to find guys with a such a diverse skill set at his position.

    Go Raiders!

  96. Tricky70390 Says:

Some of you need to know who the f you’re talking about when you call Nnamdi a ring chasing punk. Al Davis had his exit going from the time he said he could bring in more players with the money he’d pay him. Yea he sure did that alright…by giving Routt a bloated contract. Smh.

You know if Z.Miller suffers a couple concussions this season, they gonna have to put him on the shelf like that WR from the Colts. How much money would you all Guarantee Zack with that in mind?

  102. PA-RAIDER Says:

Cmon………If your worth your weight in salt, and you wear a Raider uniform, Al Davis will reward you. Al will PAY money to all his stars. Apparently Zach doesn’t want to be a Raider. Al Davis has and always will take care of his studs. Nnamdi wanted out…no way Al just let him walk………way too much negative speculation towards Davis when it probably should be directed to these traitors!!!!

… and he’s still the best receiver on the team. Especially with Jacoby’s arm in a cast and Chaz being made of toothpicks.

Hopefully the Raiders are now geared up for a run at Braylon and Kevin Boss.

  110. omniscience Says:

Totally agree with La to the Bay Nnami was probally offered good money thats why he took so long to sign when Hue was asked about Nnami he said he has been talking with Big Al. Nnami left said he wanted to play for a Superbowl contender it was not the money he thinks Philly chances are better everyone who stayed feels different.

    Go Raiders

Truth can be brutal, but thats not hate. Its truth.Zack too risky to pay big bucks. Gotta call it as you see it.

  112. severeraiderz Says:

Pass rushers are the most valuable commodity in the NFL behind QBs and OTs. We are looking at his contract compared to other LBs, when we should be comparing it to the contracts of other DEs

  113. Straight-Up-Raider Says:

During the frenzy, Asomugha spoke with Raiders coach Hue Jackson, cornerbacks coach Rod Woodson and squad development coach Willie Brown about the prospect of returning to the Raiders.

By Friday, Asomugha hadn’t received an offer, so he was advised by his agents to move forward.

“There was contact,” Asomugha said, “but nothing was able to be worked out.”

there is some truth to that, by gollie.

al need to have someone wright up the contracts that actually reeds the guidelines as well as the league needs to review contracts to make sure they are in compliance.
@ the 3.5 mill buy back option Kam had in his one year deal it would have been awsome. now thier on the hook for 5 yrs how many pass rush specialist are effective that long???

Gallery, Miller, Rice … Big Coup from Seattle this year.

  143. RaiderfanNY Says:

This contract is ridiculous. Wimbley was a solid player last year — no better. He had 3 sacks in the finale against KC and 6 in the previous 15 games. He disappeared for entire games in the middle of the season, especially against good teams.

He’s someone we needed back, but not with an All-Pro contract. $29 million guaranteed is a joke. Big Al should have given that money to Nnamdi, who is actually a great player.

It’s like All has gone from one extreme — giving blank checks to free agents from other teams — to the opposite extreme of overpaying his own guys.

  144. ambase9 Says:

Its unreal what Al is doing. He had 4 months to get his house in order. what does he do sign a long snapper, reserve lb, unbelievable $$$ to Routt and and K

He forgets BUSH and Miller. Without them it will be same ole same ole. Defense always on the field.
w/o them MAcfadden’s career is in jeopardy.
