Raiders restructure LB Wimbley’s contract, free up cap room (updated)

The Raiders finalized the restructuring of linebacker Kamerion Wimbley’s contract, which gets them out from under the $11.3 million figure they guaranteed him by making him their franchise tag player.

The news comes courtest of Fox Sports’ Adam Caplan, who reports Wimbley signed a five-year, $48 million deal, with $29 million guarantee.

“The new contract has to be earned, so I definitely look forward to the opportunity to go out and playing and earning every bit of the contract,” Wimbley said

In the process, the Raiders were able to lessen the cap liability for 2011, which gives them more room to sign players such as tight end Zach Miller and other free agents.

Wimbley did not practice today because the new deal he signed lumps him in with the other free agents who signed contracts since the lockout ended. That means he won’t be allowed to practice again until Thursday.

Raiders coach Hue Jackson was effusive in his praise of Wimbley.

“Kamerion Wimbley, new Raider, free agency,” Jackson said. “It’s one of our signings. Write that down everybody. No, that’s what it is. … Again, it’s just our organization continuing to lock up a good young talent. Kamerion Wimbley, what a terrific few days of practice he was having and then, all of a sudden, we got the deal done. Now, all of a sudden, he’s a free agent. But he’s here. He’s ours.”

Jackson said he always has liked Wimbley from his days with the Cleveland Browns, when Jackson’s Bengals and Ravens had to face him twice a season.

“I know what he is,” Jackson said. “He’s a tremendous player, a tremendous young player. I know he has nothing but an unbelievable upside ahead of him. Nine sacks a year ago, I expect more than that, more of that, and he’ll do that for this organization.”

Wimbley, 27, is entering his sixth NFL season and second with the Raiders. He led the Raiders in sacks last season and is counting upon even bigger things this season.

“There’s so many areas I feel like I can  get better in,” Wimbley said. ”I’m working on that every day. I’m just taking it one day at a time and going in and watching film and  making corrections and coming out here and working on that and perfect the craft daily.”

Bcz….u beat me by 20 min on the Lofa thing…i posted yesterday and didnt even look first lol….but yeah we on same accord we sick of gettin punked. Lofa changes alot and is a playmaker

You have to wonder who is negotiating these deals with Al….He needs some real help, not Trask or Hererra.

  • Mistic1 Tha Supavillain

Wmibly contrcat vs.Miller contract or is it?

1.) Does one signing preclude the other? Absolutley not. We dont know what Davis offered to miller. we dont know how much miller wants. is miller pulling a gallery and asking for too much?. The bottom line is davis offered what he feels is fair, that may have nothing to do with how much another player is being paid.

2.) Who brings more to the dance? Trying to find a player that does what wimbly does is extremely difficult. Miller on the other hand is a one dimensional tight end. His value is catching passes, but you could bring in a guy that has comparable hands, and could be a better blocker, for less money.

value for value, kam is the guy you cant afford to lose. you could down grade a full step at tight end and still have a very good offense.

  • plataynegro

Dors anyone else think this says something about Miller’s foot?

This is proof that Al wont let one of “his” guys go unless something is wrong! A TE with bad feet is as bad as a T(Gaither) with a bad back!

  • YoungAmerican

The contract is excessive, but as long as the Raiders have cleared up a bunch of cap room that’s all that matters to me.

  • Fear_the_eyepatch

Can’t stand all you haters in here. RAAAAAAIIIIIIIDDDDDDDEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRSSSSSSS!!!!
From the womb to the tomb!!!!!

Wimbley being greedy could cost us Zach Miller.

    —————————
@Wasbanned, Wimbley and the Raiders negotiated a contract. That’s business, not greed.

  • thebest

I think he is well worth the money. PLUS, he wants to be here. Not so sure about Zack.

Fans need to let him know about it if Zach ends up in Seattle.

Did you ride the short bus to school? That is the dumbest thing I have heard on this blog since PriestBj said DHB would be an all-pro. Cam deserves what ever Al is dumb enough to pay. Who would say don’t pay me so much?

    BINGO!

Idk about Lofa, he is hurt a lot lately, I would rather bring Kirk Morrison back cheap and start him over groves. cheaper and a better transition. He didn’t leave on bad blood.

“Raiders have cleared up a bunch of cap room”

Yeah so they can sign Bush to a 5 year 50 Million contract.

  • guest123

ESPN’s John Clayton reported Lofa Tatupu is set to visit the Redskins after visiting the Raiders.

  • Mistic1 Tha Supavillain

Kam is being under valued in here today. everyone is stuck on his sack totals, and i understand why. 9 sacks is very good and any team must account for his pass rush. He can improve that number and get into double digits. How ever his pass rush is only part of his game. he was decent in the run game, and his coverage skills were vastly under rated before this season. Im telling you it is not easy to find guys with a such a diverse skill set at his position.

K Morrison is cool too. RoMac can demonstrate what real MLB’s do in this league.

Let the redskins take Lofa then, Kirk Morrison would be a cheap steal and Kirk would shine as an outside backer instead of middle.

Good news with the Wimbley restructuring and now the old man needs to wake up and sign Miller and Lofa!!

9 fkn sacks got this guy this contract? WTF. The only way I see this working out is if al lumped a big sum of the guarantee into year 3 (2014) when the new tv deal will be negotiated causing a significant bump in the cap. This ‘more cap friendly deal’ blows my mind

    ^^^^^^^^^
Yep! 9 sacks while only rushing the passer as a part time situational pass rusher. Imagine how many sacks he would have had if he played as a full time down pass rushing RDE?

  • alex7

If safeties are as interchangeable as Jackson says they are, I would prefer Huff and Branch both starting, with MM as a run D guy/OLB.

    ……

Speaking of short bus… ITS K-K-K KAM as in Kamerion, not Cam. I am sure this deal could have been done for a little less several days ago and Miller could have been locked up.

But hey, maybe this Cam guy getting dumb Al’s money will help us…

  • Raider E

You know if Z.Miller suffers a couple concussions this season, they gonna have to put him on the shelf like that WR from the Colts. How much money would you all Guarantee Zack with that in mind?

    ^^^^^^
Meh, it wouldn’t happen as much as you think. A RDE’s main job is to get to the passer and hold the edge on a run play in a 4-3 scheme. They are not supposed to penetrate against the run.

  • CODEBLACK2011

This contract could be backloaded, which is why it frees up a good amount of cap space. Probably has an option for the final years like Nnamdi’s did.

Al Davis should kill himself if he lets Miller sign with the Seahawks!

    Period!

    —————————

That might be a little over the top.

Maybe Miller just wants out, like Nnamdi. Maybe he just didn’t like the M.O. of Oakland. Screw him anyway, Hue will make do with who he has.

If he thinks he’s chasin a ring in seattle, maybe he aint so bright.

  • la and the bay

F$#$&^*()( Nnamdi. Al asked if he wanted to be traded. Coulda gotten a 1st rounder plus. Nnamdi said no. Now he walks to a flash in the pan. I can’t blame him, I guess. He wants to win and the Eagles said they’d keep adding.

    But….

    Rich signed the contract.

    Huff signed the contract.

    Kam signed the contract.

    Bush will sign the contract.

If Zach don’t wanna sign, f$#@%%^& him too.

You think we low-balled Zach? We said kick it a minute, let us do our number thing.

He knows Al is on his side.

Or he should. Let’s build a bully, Zach. Cable only could get us so far, Uncle Al gotta put it down and Ol Petey’s not so loyal.

St. Looey gunnin for him and he ain’t got a QB.

  • Dr. Hunter S. Thompson

Aso took a pay cut to leave. He didn’t want to be here.

Thank god Al was smart enough to get Routt under contract before free agency. If he didn’t someone else would have made a run at him.

    Go Raiders!

  • Tricky70390

Some of you need to know who the f you’re talking about when you call Nnamdi a ring chasing punk. Al Davis had his exit going from the time he said he could bring in more players with the money he’d pay him. Yea he sure did that alright…by giving Routt a bloated contract. Smh.
