Satele returns to Raiders
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Tuesday, August 2nd, 2011 at 9:27 pm in Oakland Raiders.
The Raiders have confirmed the signing of of tackle Stephon Heyer, guard Justin Smiley and tackle Seth Wand, and added a minor surprise _ the re-signing of center Samson Satele.
Satele was granted unrestricted free agency as a four-year veteran when the new collective bargaining agreement was reached, and thought to be on his way out when the Raiders drafted Stefen Wisniewski in the second round with coach Hue Jackson proclaiming him the starting center.
Last season, Satele started 15 of 16 games in what may have been his best season. He has 59 starts in 63 games over four seasons. With experience at guard, Satele gives the Raiders an option at all three inside positions as well as insurance in case Wisniewski doesn’t develop as quickly as hoped.
Alex Parsons, a practice squad player, has been Oakland’s backup center during recent practice sessions.
The Raiders return to practice at 3:30 p.m. following a morning walkthrough.

What a silly old looney man Al and his “management team” are.
They could have signed Miller to a bargain deal before the lockout, but nooooo he waited and Miller felt unappreciated and said bye bye then old man.
Now the old man will overpay for Boss, like he overpaid for Routt and Eugene and even Wimbley. Even though Wimbleys contract is cap friendly.
August 2nd, 2011 at 9:43 pm
Glad Satele is back by the way!
August 2nd, 2011 at 9:45 pm
Wouldn’t be surprised if Al feels like the Raiders can get by with Myers, Gordon and Ausberry.
I’d like the Raiders to sign Boss… but I feel like it isn’t going to happen.
The Raiders need to add some weapons on offense for sure if they’re going to make any progress this season.

They tried to sign ZM before the lockout, Miller held out, and then walked for the highest bidder.
“We heard that Miller got an attractive offer from Oakland before the lockout and they apparently thought they were close to a deal as recently as Tuesday.”

the truth is, Miller didn’t want to be a Raider. I suspect Nnamdi didn’t either. They will say whatever to the Media because they don’t want to appear un-loyal, and they know the Raiders won’t say anything. Its a business…Seems like very few guys these days care about their teams.

I’ll go on record and say that I like Boss. I watched a bunch of Fiant games last year and the guy means business. Big, physical and can catch the ball. I was impressed from what I saw out of him and wonder why the Giants are lagging on signing him back up.
It’s obvious Al want the focus to be on the receivers and not to have a TE leading the team in receptions. I say bring in Boss and let’s call it a day and play some F-in ball.

August 2nd, 2011 at 10:10 pm
Coach Davis drafted two O-Linemen, two DB’s and a TE and a WR that was converted to TE, so I got to believe that Coach Davis knows what he is doing. His track record of three SuperBowl wins supports his decisions. I have to believe he has a plan knows what he is doing.
Having said that, it hurts to lose #21 and Miller but we still have basically the same team as last year. A smash-mouth type of football team. We are going to run the ball and our D-Line is IMO the most under rated D-Line in the NFL.
Do I think that we are going to win the SuperBowl? No, but we have a young team and we are building something here. Raiders are headed in the right direction.

Satele is a very good backup for both C/G and played very well at times last year esp towards the end of the season so this is a quality signing. He needs to put on 10-20 tho..

It’s a great night to be a Raiders fan. Isn’t it?!
Keeping Satele around is a great idea. Wiz2.0 might be great…but might doesn’t add up to anything yet, he’s still a rook with a lot to learn. Hopefully, he’ll be great right out of the gate (hey — it could happen). Satele’s experience could come in very handy…as a mentor and a backup.
See ya later, Zach Miller. If you only knew how to block, you might’ve gotten that deal right here.
Once Zach went a-visiting though, he lost all backing from The Man who signs the checks. Good luck anyway.
August 2nd, 2011 at 10:23 pm
CDE, team biggest need is O-line play?
So, it’s the o-line’s fault the Raiders haven’t had a winning season in nearly a decade?
August 2nd, 2011 at 10:24 pm
Best thing that could happen to the O-line, is if Satele is beaten-out by the younger guys up and down the line. It’s past time to build an O-line that will endure for a few years.
August 2nd, 2011 at 10:27 pm
Yeah, it’s good Satele returned.

August 2nd, 2011 at 10:32 pm

No it’s Al’s and the coaches fault for not building an oline that can win. Since the SB, year after year, oline has been neglected – ever since the Gallery/ Grove draft (disaster) Al has been basically ignoring the oline and the Offenses have sucked, even with decent skill players. We won when we had Pro bowlers on the Oline – Wis/Kennedy/BRobbins, etc. You can’t win without a good/great oline and we have been horrible for a decade now.
At least they drafted a couple dudes and Hue’s been emphasizing it alot in presser – they looked hard at Gaither and now have brought in more dudes so at least its being addressed – wouldn’t be suprised if line was much improved this year and if so, we will win.
Go RAIDERS!
August 2nd, 2011 at 10:34 pm
In fact, as far as expert opinions go, I can only find a link to one saying that Miller is a great blocker. Of course, it was his college coach. But nothing as far as him being a bad blocker, per se. I watch games but I really don’t clue in on blocking. I just watch the ball and the plays unfold. After all, I’m not a coach. Nobody’s paying me to analyze film. lol. So, I have to defer to the experts on this. And as far as I can see, Miller’s blocking isn’t a problem. And he has a great reputation as a receiving tight end, which is important at this level.
August 2nd, 2011 at 10:35 pm
So, if it takes Al Davis nearly a decade to build an offensive line, wouldn’t you agree that perhaps GENERAL MANAGER might be our biggest need?
August 2nd, 2011 at 10:37 pm
We get a couple stud guards and solidify the line. DMAC gets 1500, Bush gets 1000. Look out AFC west! You thought last year was a beat down….
Veldheer, Wis2.0 and maybe even Barksdale making pro bowl in next 2 years?

Everything I ever heard or read said Zack was a good blocker.Only on here was it said he isn’t.But it really isn’t a surprise the old guy wouldn’t sign him. After all,he traded D.Casper and R.Chester-Chester during his prime.Unfortunately,IMO,he thinks TEs are easily replaced, yet it took us years before we found one that was worth a damn.

So, HayesDaze doesn’t know what he’s talking about. Figures.
August 2nd, 2011 at 10:46 pm
We all watch every game. Overall Zach was a great pass catcher, but not a great blocker – his blocking was ‘ok’ probably a bit below average. It would have been great for him to return but lets face it, Seattle overpaid. And they didn’t even need a TE. In any case, we saved $34 mil and lets build the Oline up with that cash! If we can get 2500 yards on the ground Zach will not be missed.

CDERaider,
Can you find a link anywhere on the internet which has one single expert who agrees with your opinion on Miller’s blocking?
August 2nd, 2011 at 10:53 pm
We have a QB whose nicknames Captain Checkdown. We’d better have a strong plan B.Also,Sanders loves to utilize the TE.I doubt Myers is equal to Miller in any facet of the game.Gordon is nothing more than a Tackle playing the position and Ashberry is a rookie who is being converted from WR and will have to learn the blocking aspect of the position.
August 2nd, 2011 at 10:54 pm
Yes, we all watch the games. But sometimes we tend to see what we want to see, instead of seeing what’s happening. And I can’t find one single NFL expert analyst who says that Miller can’t block. In fact, I can only find praise by experts. The only people I can find that say he can’t block are Raider fan bloggers. Good guys, I’m sure. But zero credibility.
August 2nd, 2011 at 10:54 pm
Al may have dodged a big one here: What may seem on paper like a organiztional downgrade at player personel this year, may in fact be the biggest spike in team preparedness the Raiders have ever met.
While it appears that Al Davis may be doing little to next to nothing, letting key players walk, not going after big name FAs’, he has already done more than he has in recent years combined.
While I wont get into the financial structures and cap nonesense, what Al has done first and foremost was can Cable and replace him with Hue Jackson. While Cable canning may or may not have been justified, who better in the wings than Hue.
Al contracted the guys he wanted before the lockout and that is all that needs to be said. If Aso were to stay, it would have been because that is what Al wanted. He probably saw Zach Miller as someone who is softening up and Al wanted no part of it.
When Al got Hue, Al got a bully-builder. And bringing on Woodson, Wiz, and Biekert was flat out bold.
Al has already done all the work he needs to do. He hired Hue as head coach.
August 2nd, 2011 at 10:57 pm
Some of these posters don’t seem to understand. Fans cheer for laundry. You’re cheering for the jersey, not the guy wearing it.
Gannon was a chief, Rod Woodson was a Steeler, Romanowski was a bronco. When they were wearing silver and black, you forgot all about it and cheered for them. The last team Tim Brown played for was the Bucs. Stabler played for the Oilers and the Saints after he left the Raiders.
Zach and nnamdi were great Raiders. The Radiers didn’t value them as much as other teams and now they’ll be great Seahawks/eagles. Doesn’t make them punks, it’s just the reality of the NFL. (Especially for the Raiders since they are run by a man who has been suffering from dementia for years.).
Cheer for the guys in black, cheer against the guys in blue/red/yellow and dont stress over the rest. (Cause I promise, the guys on the field could care less who is signing the check, as long as it clears)

Troll — We all know what Zach’s weakness is (besides wanting to play for Seattle)…it’s his blocking. You say you watch the games…if that’s true, you know you’re twisting the truth just for an argument. Cahse that stinky tail.
Zach Miller has great hands, and an uncanny ability to find open space to catch the ball. Coming o0ut of college, his blocking skills were a noted deficiency…and they didn’t improve much while here. Did I want him to leave? No. Is he a top-level blocker? Not even close.
I wouldn’t be surprised to find the young kids are better blockers than Zach, right out of the gate.

Didn’t say he ‘couldn’t block’ – just said he wasn’t known to be great at it, lets face it – Miller was a probowl *alternate* in 2010 – after 4 good, but not great years on a pathetic offense that had to go to the TE more often due to horrible oline and WR play. Having said that, I liked him, wanted him back, but since he left I’m not crying over it, because he’s not *that* great, some are falling apart over this – looking for yet another reason to hate the team and owner and ignore the fact that this is a team on the rise and losing one $34 mill ‘better than avg’ Tight End ain’t gonna change that. Show me a better Oline and better WR play and I’ll take that over having to pay Miller $34 mil contract and I think Meyers, et al is more than capable of picking up the slack anyway.
Go RAIDERS!
August 2nd, 2011 at 11:19 pm
David Ausberry runs in the 4.4’s @245 lbs. add 10 lbs. and maybe he slows to low 4.5 that is smoking for a TE. Tim Brown played the majority of his career running 4.5 we haven’t had a TE like this kid since Ray Chester. He doesn’t have to be 255 he can play TE @245 there are many that do. Shancoe is 245 but David not just fast he’s athletic he can control his body in the air and adjust. When you see that in camp and he does it over and over that will get someones attention. And it did.
August 2nd, 2011 at 11:20 pm
Keeping the running game going with a deep O-line.
Expect
…DMc, Bush(?) & T. Jones to have a good year.
…Better protection for JC
…Chaz, Jacoby & the new TE to more than make up for Zack.
60 rec 685 yd 5 td is very good for a TE but
not impressive numbers for the leading receiver of a team.
I dont think I predicted any Raider moves correctly so,

Scouting report on Miller coming out of AZ. He improved since then but he still has the same M.O.
http://www.warroomreport.com/draft/rankings/te/miller.htm
August 2nd, 2011 at 11:21 pm
resigning Mr. Satele was very smart on Al & Hue’s part,
this will give the Raiders some continuity on the OLine (even if Barnes & Satele) do not start, it gives us veteran leadership on the bench.
I also like the signing of Mr. Smiley G, and Mr. Heyer T; they have experience and will bring competition to the OLine
Centers:Mr. Wisniewski, Mr. Satele (G), Mr. Parsons (G)
Guards: Mr. Carlisle, Mr. Loper, Mr. Campbell (T), Mr. Smiley, Mr. Pelc, & Mr. Schuening
Tackles: Mr. Vehldeer (C), Mr. Barnes, Mr. Barksdale, Mr. Wand, Mr. Heyer, Mr. Habben, Mr. Eliades, and Mr. Lamaak
this is 17 players competing for 9-12 positions w/Vehldeer LT & Wisniewski C only locks to start (barring a complete meltdown by either one)
Raiders are committed to putting the best OL in the NFL on the field, would still like to see them sign Waters.
August 2nd, 2011 at 11:22 pm
CDE,
soooo, despite D’s knowing that our TE was our only non-RB receiving threat, he still produced.
That’s what you’re saying.
And yeah, he blocked for a 1,100 yard rusher. If the o-line gets credit, Zach gets credit.
August 2nd, 2011 at 11:26 pm
CDE Raider..
A team on the rise?
Let’s take a close look at this so called progression:
Tom Cable to Hue Jackson. Tom Cable has coached in this league and finished his most reason season with a .500 record. Hue Jackson has never coached an NFL game (as head coach). Advantage: Cable
Letting Gradkowski walk. Significantly worsens our overall QB roster. Gradkowski was solid as a backup. His replacement is Trent Edwards, who has gotten worse each of the past few years. In the past 2 seasons, Gradkowski is far better than Edwards.
Nnamdi Asomugha to Stanford Routt? That’s so much of a downgrade it actually takes our overall secondary to being one of the best in the league to being one of the worst.
Zach Miller to Brandon Myers. Really, almost as much of a free fall as Nnamdi to Routt. A pro bowl TE (alternate, as you were quick to point out) to a nobody.
Just about every change made to the coaching staff and personnel this off season was a statistical downgrade. The only thing likely to be “on the rise” this year are fans leaving the stadium in the third quarter.

Miller was offered contract but declined..
http://www.csnbayarea.com/08/02/11/Seahawks-sign-TE-Miller-away-from-Raider/l_raiders.html?blockID=545530&feedID=2801
‘Miller said the Raiders were in constant contact with him and made an unspecified offer but acknowledged it would be fair to say Cable’s presence in Seattle was the tipping point in his decision.’
Seattle outbid, bottom line. $34 mil is too much anyway and if he wants to cuddle with Curly than so be it.
Go RAIDERS!
August 2nd, 2011 at 11:28 pm
Raiders held the team together!
We lost only four – six meaningful players
Gradkowski backup QB
Higgins backup WR
Howard backup LB
Gallery starter G
Miller starter TE
Asomugha starter CB
only Nnamdi and Zach were a lock to make the final 53 this season anyway.
We had another excellent draft. Some of the players the Raiders cut this season will be picked up by other teams.

CODE BLACK 2011
August 2nd, 2011 at 11:29 pm
I don’t know many “good” coaching staffs that win without “great” talent.
Whisenhunt goes from SB to terrible w/o Warner.
Shanahan without Elway.
John Fox without Delhomme’s career years got canned.
Childress without healthy Favre = canned.
ANYONE can coach the Ravens to the playoffs.
ANYONE can coach the Steelers to the playoffs.
NORV TURNER is a playoff coach when given talent.
It’s about the players, specifically the QB. They have them, we don’t.
August 2nd, 2011 at 11:29 pm
It’s the wya they react to everything they don’t like Lefty12. It doesn’t surprise me he deserted them as they it. Truth is Mr D. was gonna break him off, simple as that. It is what it is I liked Zack a lot and definitely wante dhim to stay but I said before he needed to get in camp before these kids opened the eyes of the only man that counts. And I was right….
August 2nd, 2011 at 11:31 pm
Lefty, I’ve always been amazed that even though the Raiders are supposed to be a “players’ organization”, where the players are treated the way “they’d like to be treated” (-Al Davis), at how quickly so many Raider fants will just trash players after they leave here.
August 2nd, 2011 at 11:32 pm
What’s this “code black” thing I keep seeing?
August 2nd, 2011 at 11:32 pm
I’m more concerned with the Oline Zack was important but I want this line to get better and better. If that happens we can live with the loss of Zack. Because as did Zack one of these TE’s will develope and be good. How soon is the issue but we have a vet in Myers if we didn’t have him YEAH I’d be worried but he knows the offense and he not all that bad.
August 2nd, 2011 at 11:35 pm
RR,
we “only” lost a Pro-Bowl CB and Pro-Bowl tight end?
And replaced them with…speedy rookies? You can’t really think we’re better, right?
Our team was 2-8 outside our weak division, and we’ve gotten worse.
That’s it.
August 2nd, 2011 at 11:36 pm
Alex, good example, Norv in SD. Before SD Norv had a reputation for being a horrible coach who belonged upstairs calling plays. Suddenly he’s a HC for a guy who actually knows how to build a team in this league, and his weaknesses become attributes.
August 2nd, 2011 at 11:37 pm
This the funniest thing I’ve seen in a long time. The NBA sued the players citing unfair pressure tactics in bargaining……….LOL I don’t think I’ve EVER seen a league sue it’s players for unfair pressure tactics.
The players have the owners backed into a corner and they’re ready to holla “Uncle”. LOL
August 2nd, 2011 at 11:39 pm
post #95
wrong
coach- Hue is the reason the Raiders gained over 500 yards of offense 3 times last season and we reached .500, w/o Jackson the Raiders with only Cable are in the Newton/Peterson sweepstakes.
backup QB- the Raiders and every other team do not go as far as the backup qb takes- this team will rise as far as Mr. campbell takes us.
CB- I give you that one though you are being extreme when you say we will have one of the worst DB sets in the league-our Magificent Seven will be sacking QBs at an unprecedented rate anway 70 sacks/over 10% of pass plays.
TE- this one we will find out, Mr. Myers same type of TE (now will have the same reps as Zach if he starts), Mr. Reece has great hands and breaks downfield with experience as a WR and FB, he could easily adjust to TE, Mr. Ausberry & Mr. Gordon are athletic freaks aka Vernon Davis/Shannon Sharp types they have the potential to be as good as the best, Zach was very good and that was his plateau.
August 2nd, 2011 at 11:39 pm
Myers looked stiff and slow last year. He’s not going to require much attention from opposing D coordinators. Curious what others saw in him that makes him a decent fall-back option.
August 2nd, 2011 at 11:40 pm
I’ll bet you the players f’n love Norv Turner in SD. Bet you he’s probably the most popular coach in the league with his own team, if they were to run some kind of poll. He’s the perfect balance to that dickk GM over there. But that GM is smart and knows football players. Norv being the all around nice guy that draws the plays works well over there.
August 2nd, 2011 at 11:41 pm
RaiderRetribution, just come up with some kind of proof that Hue is the reason for our improvement last year, and I’ll accept your argument.
August 2nd, 2011 at 11:43 pm
RR,
we gained those 500 yards against the Cardinals, Seahawks, and Broncos. Let’s settle down a bit.
We play real teams like the Jets, Bears, Vikings, and Packers this year.
August 2nd, 2011 at 11:44 pm
Long time reader, first time poster and I felt like I need to get in on the ruckus this season since I’ve got my tix against the Pats!
IMO not happy to see Miller go but I am trusting that Hue and Al have some talent in the wings to replace him. I have a feeling that our strong backfield will open space for our Receivers and they are ready to BALL!
I cant wait to see the squad on the field with a nasty smashmouth style, Look out the Silver and Black are on the way to the top! CODEBLACK!
August 2nd, 2011 at 11:45 pm
95. RAIDER
Cable->Hue. Cable was not fired, he was not given a contract extension. Hue was and is the better choice moving forward. Hue’s offense was the reason for 8-8 last year and everyone knew it. Cable was 17-27 as Raiders head coach, you simply can’t reward that with a new contract. After 4 practices this season, the team is sharper, quicker and rallying around Hue much more than Cable, just read the daily blog and camp reports from Jerry and Steve and its starting to look like a brilliant move. Advantage: Hue
Gradkowski. Couldn’t stay healthy and his W/L record stinks. Didn’t want to be here as a backup this year and now has a chance to compete at Bengals. Boller and Edwards both have more experience and better records than him as starters. Advantage: Raiders
Nhamdi. Was offered the Routt contract before season ended and didnt take it – was then given to Routt because he finished in top 3 in NFL on burn rate and is a solid starter. We could not afford to have both starting CB’s as FA’s and lose them both potentially. Nhamdi was leaving no matter what plus it cost $60 mill to get him which we didn’t have anyway. Routt is a good player, solid leader in the locker room and has improved every year. I like him and CJ back there starting both have alot of experience and can make plays (both had multiple picks and each had pick 6’s last year – Nhamdi 2 ints in 2 years? please..). RWood will bring up the rooks. Safeties are set. We are more than ok in secondary. Disadvantage: Tebow
Zach Miller – already made my point. Seattle overpaid and we simply couldn’t match, plus he likes to rub on Cable too much anyway.
Coaching staff – Are you kidding me? Al Saunders, multiple Super Bowls as OC? Bresnehan (sp?) was our DC during the last Super Bowl runs. Wis is a super smart technician with tons of street cred. RWood is a HOFer?? Seriously, we improved across the board on the coaching staff…
time to hit the sack, enjoyed it.. ttyl
Go RAIDERS!!!
August 2nd, 2011 at 11:46 pm
lol at 7th round Ausberry being compared to a freak athlete like V. Davis, and not a freak athlete like…say…Rickey Dudley or Teyo Johnson.
August 2nd, 2011 at 11:47 pm
Alex –
Raider fans were ready to send Nnamdi packing after his first couple of uneventful seasons, then he became the best shutdown man to man coverage cornerbackwho also makes tackles in the run game in the NFL the past 4 years ot so.
Nnamdi is not being replaced by speedy rookies he is being replaced by Mr. Routt, Al knows cornerbacks even though he has not been consistent with safeties, last great one was Mr. Van McElroy.
as for Zach read #107 and what we need is for our WRS to step up, when they do the TE position will not be that important, if they do not, the passing game will be irrelevant.
August 2nd, 2011 at 11:48 pm
95.
Cable never reached .500 w/o Jackson on staff
Gradkowski can walk? How long will that last? Not 16 weeks.
DBs improved depth & speed
Chaz, Ford V12 & new TE will cover Zacks stats
August 2nd, 2011 at 11:48 pm
CDE, Hue being the “better choice” is an opinion shared by those who put faith (and perhaps delusion) over facts. Because according to facts, Cable has far more head coaching experience, and watched a team improve by 3 wins in his most recent season as head coach. Results aside, Hue could be the better choice. Results considered, Hue can’t even be considered to be a better choice because he’s never been a head coach, and he’s being compared to someone who at least took a 5-11 team to 8-8 in his most recent season.
August 2nd, 2011 at 11:49 pm
CDE,
you did watch our secondary get lit up without Nnamdi last year in Pittsburgh and vs Miami right? You’re comfortable now with them facing Brady, Rodgers, and Cutler? Come on, be real. It’s a big step down.
We lost two of our top five players, bringing in nothing even remotely close in return.
August 2nd, 2011 at 11:51 pm
True, Cable never reached .500 without Jackson on staff. One could also point out that Al Davis never won a Super Bowl without players that Ron Wolf helped select. Oh, and I’ll raise you. Ron Wolf HAS won a Super Bowl without Al Davis’s help.
August 2nd, 2011 at 11:52 pm
Boss is the only answer. How can some of you say the raiders can get by with Myers, Gordon and Ausberry. Do I have to remind you of Courtney Alexander, Teyo Johnson, Doug Jolley and Rickey Dudley. You cant just plug someone in there.
Code: Know your football
August 2nd, 2011 at 11:53 pm
The fortyniners loss Aubrayo Franklin now they’re gonna see just how good Pat Willis really is. Because he’s going to have to fight off Olineman now more than he ever has. Pat is pissed I gaurantee it….
August 2nd, 2011 at 11:54 pm
RR, Routt is NOT replacing Nnamdi. They were often on the field at the same time last year.
We play the Patriots, Bears, Vikings, Packers, and Lions (3-WR offenses).
We’re going from Nnamdi, Routt, and C.Johnson
to
Routt, Johnson, and Walter McFadden.
Honestly, we replaced Nnamdi with Walter McFadden.
August 2nd, 2011 at 11:56 pm
Alex you are correct they could end up as a Dudley or tey, but they have upside as well, Zach is Zach/ better than Carlson, not as good as Gates & Gonzales nor will he be.
He is in that Owens/Boss/Shockey/Olsen class; will never be lousy will never be all-pro.
He will always be a pro-bowl alternate;
Raiders do not want 8-8, Raiders do not desire to be (”We’re not losers anymore”), Raiders do want to settle for pro-bowl alternates,
Raiders demand all-pro caliber performance, Hall of Fame competition, Nnamdi was the only one we lost that fit that criteria.
August 2nd, 2011 at 11:57 pm
Just because the previous TE’s failed has nothing to do with the kids they have there now. No we all agree it wont be easy but you don’t know how good these kids will be. Just wait and watch it’ll all playout. No one knows!!
August 2nd, 2011 at 11:57 pm
SharkCatcher,
thank you for your common sense
This team has gotten worse since last year, has a terrible QB with a life-long losing record, the worst WR corp in the division, projects at C, TE, RG, and RT, a horrendous run D that has been ignored, and a cool coach.
Oh, and a brutal schedule. 7-9 tops. Please accept it.
August 2nd, 2011 at 11:59 pm
Priesttj,
how has it all played out the last decade putting faith on fast 40 times, athleticism, reclamation projects, and young up-and-comers?
That’s what we have across the O-line, TE, WR, CB, and QB position. History says…no.
August 3rd, 2011 at 12:00 am
of those 3-wr offenses only one, the Vikings has a runningback that could run all over us.
our problem is not stopping the pass it is stopping the run
we lost to SF, Jax, Hou, & Tenn because we could not stop the run
our Oline will be so much better than it has been other teams will be playing catch up only Suh & Fairly give me concern
August 3rd, 2011 at 12:01 am
Common sense tells me 9-7 actually.
August 3rd, 2011 at 12:01 am
RR, seriously?
A guy is a Pro-Bowl alternate, you let him go for unproven guys that haven’t even flashed anything at the NFL level, and you say it’s ok because we won’t settle for pro-bowl alternate level talent?
In that case, release Jason Campbell, our WRs, our LBs, and our safeties. Oh, and our O-line.
August 3rd, 2011 at 12:02 am
Darren Mcfadden and the front 7 will take us home.
August 3rd, 2011 at 12:02 am
Brandon Myers TE Iowa
STRENGTHS
Brandon is an excellent blocking TE when blocking for the run or the pass. He has good hands and can catch the ball down the field without a problem. He has quick feet and is a better pass blocker than most of the LT’s in this draft. Brandon has an edge to his game. He likes, and steps up to, a challenge. He shows a lot of pride in blocking and should be a fan favorite and core player for the team that drafts him.
NEEDS TO IMPROVE
Well, he has some off field issues and runs lousy routes. Brandon must take as much pride in route running as he does when blocking. If, and when, he does, he could turn into a Pro Bowl TE. Right now, he reminds me a lot of Mark Chmura (former TE Green Bay Packers). Mark was drafted in the sixth round of the 1992 draft and turned himself into a hell of a TE. He also ruined his career with some off field problems. All I can say is, “Buyer beware!”
TALENT BOARD ROUND 3
When you find a TE who loves to block, you draft him — no questions asked. Brandon does have good hands and if he decides to run better routes, he will become a hell of a TE. For this draft, you select Brandon because he is one of the best blocking TE’s in this draft. Brandon has some maturity problems. You can see that in his play on the field because he challenges his opponents and loses respect for his opponents as the game goes on. It looks to me like some smart NFL player could bait Brandon into making mistakes and frustrating him easily. But as long as Brandon can block, then all his frustrations will go away. Right now, Brandon is a developmental TE who has excellent blocking ability along with the athletic talent to be a Pro Bowl TE at the next level. I don’t know what round Brandon will be drafted in, but I do know that if I interviewed him and he satisfied my concerns then I would draft him. Look for Rob’s board (Value Board) to watch where this kid is rated because he could be a sleeper TE in this draft.

Shark, we’re likely losing to the Jets, Patriots, Texans (again), Vikings, Bears, Dolphins (again), and Packers.
Honestly, it’s very likely that’s 7 losses. Sure, we might surprise one of those teams, but we also will lose a few in our division (going 6-0 back to back years is downright delusional).
Detroit is also a better team than us right now, and we typically lose east coast early games like the one in Buffalo this year.
August 3rd, 2011 at 12:08 am
Violent, so you agree he’s stiff and mainly a blocker? Not sure what pulling up some Joe Schmoe draft profile of him entails.

Congrats, they fattened up against the Seahawks, Cardinals, Rams, and weak afc west.

This “alternate pro bowler” argument on Miller is cracking me up. As if it supports the argument of letting him go. Yeah, he was only an “alternate” pro bowler, as opposed to the rest of our TEs, who are all true pro bowlers!
August 3rd, 2011 at 12:17 am
lol, Jets kicked our a$$es two seasons ago, just like the Patriots did, and the Giants embarrassed us, as did the Saints, and Falcons, the Steelers last year…
heck
what was the last legit non-Afc west team we beat?? Think we squeaked by the Eagles and Bengals the last two years. We’re like 2-10 vs legit teams the last few years.
We’re not beating the Jets, Patriots, or Packers.

every single season, guys get all excited about how the same scrubs that sucked last year will suddenly turn the corner.
We have no run defense.
We have no run defense.
We have no run defense. Rinse, repeat, 2003-2011.
We play Peterson, Foster, Jets and Patriots running attack, Peyton Hillis, and Matt Forte. Things will get ugly.

I remember when I was a kid the Raiders were good every year, Alex. By 2001 I was getting that feeling, again. Going into the season knowing we’d be good. Not believing we could be good, knowing we will be. There’s a difference. Haven’t had that feeling in a long time. And I don’t have it now.

yeah, back then we had real nfl players like Gannon, the Charles and Rod Woodson, Eric Allen, Romo, Parella, Sam Adams, William Thomas, Greg Biekert, Eric Turner, Tim Brown, Jon Ritchie…
football players, not 40-times.
We had a G.M., an organization.
August 3rd, 2011 at 12:29 am
Alex, I remember telling the whiner fans here in Sac back in those days that Al Davis had finally learned his lesson, like Steinbrenner with the Yanks. They’d all laugh and warn me that he would run Gruden out. I didn’t think there was any way he could be so stupid. One way or another, Al Davis will remind you he’s still Al Davis.
August 3rd, 2011 at 12:32 am
It has been NINE seasons since the Raiders began 1-0.
Nine seasons.
August 3rd, 2011 at 12:35 am
The last few seasons I reminded people in here how pivotal week one is to the Raiders. I did some googling and found out that since like the late ’80s, the Raiders wound up making the playoffs when winning game one, and missing the playoffs when losing game one, every single season except for maybe two. Just about every single year, week one determines if the Raiders are for real. Week one is the Super Bowl for the Raiders. When they lose that game, they just die. Al starts tinkering with everything. It’s a mess from that point on.
August 3rd, 2011 at 12:37 am
yeah, Gruden wins SB, Gruden makes playoffs twice more after that, Raiders hire Art Shell straight from his NFL job of telling 23-year olds to wear their NFL socks correctly…hire bread and breakfast guy, refuse to let Monty Kiffin coach our defense, bring in 3-4 defensive coordinator and force him to run 4-3, draft Russell against head coach’s wishes…
good times.

It’s too bad about Miller. Seems entirely unnecessary and just a consequence of Al not being who he used to be.
Looks like he waited too long and then lowballed the guy.
Millers a real good tight end but if he’s gone then he’s gone.
Myers was drafted because of his blocking abilities and he’s still there. Boss would be good too.
August 3rd, 2011 at 12:48 am
THe Raiders are building a physical back two basics football team.
No more emphasis on defensive backs and soft players.
The Raiders will run the football +55% of the time and run the hell out of DMAC and Bush. Something they should have done years ago!
Front 7 is the focus…not diminutive defensive backs. Pay Seymour, Kelly, Wimbley, Houston, Shaughnessy and McClain….sign Tatupu and you have a BEAST defense….developing the young NT and Henderson is healthy.
Pressure the QB….and it doesn’t matter who is in the defensive backfield….mike mitchell to add more lumber.
Running Oklahoma Drills in the 1st week!
CODE BLACK! Its all about running the ball, stopping the run and hitting people in the mouth.
August 3rd, 2011 at 12:50 am
141. Raiders were inconsistent and too often unimpressive and finished 6-0, 8-8. The division is weak. Its fair to believe that this team will be in contention for the AFC west title.
Raiders swept whoever else is considered the favorite, KC?
Highly regarded coach with highly regarded talent.
Winning determines the greatness
August 3rd, 2011 at 12:51 am
The only mistakes Davis has made is:
1. Wasting time drafting Defensive Backs/WR/TE in the 1st two rounds
2. Too many free agent signings that didn’t fit a smashmouth back to basics football style
3. Not getting compensation for Nnamdi & Miller
But who cares…at the end of the day Davis and Hue are building the type of team that will never get physically punked…
Run the Ball and stop the run..mix in playaction….physical football…no excuses
August 3rd, 2011 at 12:53 am
I dunno, SnB.
We TRIED running the ball all the time when Jamarcus was here. We just drafted a bunch of cornerbacks and no defensive run-stuffing beef.
We tried running it on the Titans, Niners, Colts, Steelers, and Dolphins to no avail. We lost our best lineman.
I dunno. Seems like the same ol’ same ol’ when it comes down to our roster.
August 3rd, 2011 at 12:54 am
For someone who thinks we don’t need DB’s here’s a clue. we drafted TWO DB”s both VHT from great programs. So much for no more DB’s and we’ll always draft DB’s we always have and we always will………….period
August 3rd, 2011 at 12:55 am
No way you can win in this league with bad DB’s and it’s hieght of naievity to think so.
August 3rd, 2011 at 12:56 am
lol, so Davis is building a smash-mouth football team, except that he really isn’t. That’s what 153 says, right?
August 3rd, 2011 at 12:58 am
Raidr J This is not a weak division it’s rather strong outside of Denver. But we showed we can beat any of them and do it rather handily now it’s a matter doing it on a consistent basis. The seconmd game we basically dominated SD. The same is true with KC both playoff calibre teams.
August 3rd, 2011 at 1:01 am
Yes Priestt,
drafting Fabian Washington, Buchanon, John Bowie, Schweigert, Darnell Bing, Michael Huff, and Tyvon Branch has been a very solid strategy to turn this team around.
That’s exactly how the Patriots, Steelers, Jets, Falcons, Eagles, and Saints do it.
Oh wait, no. They draft QBs, DL, and OL.
August 3rd, 2011 at 1:02 am
WHy wouldn’t Al offer Miller a contract? Because Al’s feelings were hurt when he fired Cable. Don’tyou remebr players being unhappy about that and voicing it. That is stubborness for ya!

As Davis has seen, there are DBs to be found in the mid-to late rounds…
Priest, the Raiders are trying to get physical this year…Davis has moved dollars to the front 7…PERIOD
As for the offense, the running game is and has always been the strength of this team. DMAC is elite..and when Bush gets 10+ carries…good things happen. Hue will get passes to DMAC, Bush and Reese.
Unfortunately, Cable didin’t like Bush…but his backside was put on the road
The Raiders have been getting physically manhandled because of guys like Derrick Burgess on the D-Line….not anymore….bigger guys up front, smashmout running.
The passing game will fill in where needed

Show me a team with bad corners and I’ll show you a bad team.
====================================================
What did this overpaid secondary do for this team the last 10 years.
Stopping the run is the key to winning. Stop the run sets up obvious down and distance. Then unleash the pass rush…don’t need great corners…just competent ones…Routt and CJ fit the bill..although Routt was overpaid
August 3rd, 2011 at 1:14 am
The Ravens STARTED Chris Carr, Fabian Washington, and Josh Wilson last year at cornerback.
There. Those guys are nothing special. Done.
It’s the O-line, D-line, and QB.
We’ve ignored 2/3rds of that simple equation that everyone else seems to understand.
August 3rd, 2011 at 1:16 am
SnB,
didn’t we have the exact same front 4 last year?
And we got run through like soft tissue.
We have four pass-rushers, and one legit run-stopper (Shaughnessy).
August 3rd, 2011 at 1:18 am
Pats, Steelers, Eagles, Packers.
QBs and D-Coordinators.
We have neither. False hope until we get real at those two crucial positions.
August 3rd, 2011 at 1:19 am
SnB the only reason we didn’t draft a DB in the 1st rnd is we didn’t have a 1st rnd pick to do so. The only thing Mr Davis draft in the 1st are player he feels are game changers and corners definitely. He wanted Jimmy Smith and would’ve taken him. The only thing he would’ve taken over him is the bets LT in the draft. SnB if you don’t think he’ll draft a corner in the 1st rnd you’re dreaming. DB’s keep you in games son. This is a passing league and without them you don’t have a chance in hell…………..period
Get a clue son.
August 3rd, 2011 at 1:21 am
SnB You hav a lot to learn man, we haven’t had a QB who could put up points when we need them. That was the difference in last year and that will be the difference this year.
August 3rd, 2011 at 1:21 am
SnB, so, if we don’t pressure the QB, we’re screwed. Basically, if our opponents catch wind of the fact that we have no corners, they can just max protect…and we’re screwed.
August 3rd, 2011 at 1:22 am
Add to that we’ll be in man coverage. A dream come true for an offense that’s max protecting.
August 3rd, 2011 at 1:24 am
SnB, what did the overpaid secondary do the past 10 years? In Nnamdi’s case? He shut down his side of the field, and forced QBs to throw to the other side.
August 3rd, 2011 at 1:26 am
Yeah well Routt is one of tghe better corners in this league SnB you are contradicting yourself. You must have DB’s that can handle the top rec’s in this league if you don’t you cannot win…………period
You need both a pass rush and a backend to help your pass rush or the QB will carve you to bits. This is the NFL it aint college you must cover the CJ’s and Larry Fitzgeralds of the world or you’ll get killed.
August 3rd, 2011 at 1:28 am
Wow, priest. A rare dose of realism in your comments tonight. Did Al fire you, or something?
August 3rd, 2011 at 1:30 am
Stop the run and put the opponent in obvious passing situations….
The run defense should improve with a more experienced McClain and a healthy John Henderson.
Still need another linebacker….Tatupu would be a fantastic pick and good use of the money that would have gone to Miller…..and have a much bigger impact.
Look, the wide receivers etc…have a ways to go. But the running game is here now. Exploit your strengths!
August 3rd, 2011 at 1:31 am
The Raiders play man defense…its impossible for the CBs to hang in their very long.
Its always been about the pass rush!
And your secondary gave up some 28 TD passes last year…so how good was it?
Stop the run!
August 3rd, 2011 at 1:32 am
158. I say the AFC west is weak because the elite AFC teams are in the other divisions. From the bottom up the north or south may be weaker but I don’t believe that the Raiders could win any division other than the west. SD hasn’t proven to among the top AFC teams without LaDanian. KC has to prove that they can handle a division champ schedule. “winable” may be a better term
August 3rd, 2011 at 1:35 am
The passing game is not really built for 30+ attempts and all that. The Raider receivers have not demonstrated to date they can take on the task of having a pass 1st offense.
“cutting it loose” was a disaster. This “should” be a run 1st offense, mixing in a lot of screens and taking a few strikes down the field.
Defense keeps the Raiders in the game and play the field position game.
You guys play too many video games…..grind it out!
August 3rd, 2011 at 1:37 am
I hope they go “Jumbo Package” more times.
Get a big blocking TE that can get maybe 2 or 3 catches a game….DMAC and Bush will crack a couple if the Raiders stay oommitted to it.
The Oklahoma Drills are a HUGE upgrade over 4 days of “Walk Throughs”
Build a Bully!

August 3rd, 2011 at 1:37 am
We just lost our best and surrest hands on the team by far. I barely ever remember Miller dropping a pass thrown his way that was catchable (I remember it happening twice and both times it was such a shock everyone was not sure what to say).
We’re losing our quality players and trying to replace them with…well…unproven fast players with a hope of an upside because of their size/speed ratio.
I think our defense will be viscious this year. We still have a lot of breakaway threats on offense and hopefully with DMC we can get some consistency on moving the chains as well.
I just don’t know who I’d try to throw to on 3rd down. Probably McFadden as he’s probably our next best set of hands on the team.
August 3rd, 2011 at 1:48 am
Okay, anyone can give me a “Logical” reason that Al Davis did not even try to resign Miller or Nnamdi? From what it seems like Al didn’t even try with them.
He basically uncerimoniously dumped them. It seemed both wanted to come back per their interviews afterwards. And I think both were a hellova lot more deserving of new contracts than Routt or even Wimbley.
We’re losing our consistant players who can be counted on. The only ones who I think we have still that are really Solid (not highlight play once and then huge miss the next) are on our D-Line (all 4 of them actually) and RB.
I wouldn’t call any of our WRs consistent. Ford came along best. The others either injured often or miss way too many catches.
Our QB we’re hoping will improve after a 2nd year in the system.
Our O-line is now patchwork pretty much. Probably the person everyone wanted to leave is now our most consistent O-linemen.
TE? Pray to god now that they don’t drop the 3rd down pass.
On Defense…the D-Line is rock-solid. AFter that McClain has the potential, and probably will be at that level. The other two LBs are not elite. Our Safeties will miss a ton of plays (maybe goes with the position). Routt is likely to give up a big play or two a game. CJ is probably the most stable out of our back 4 right now.
It’s not a pretty thing. Now, that being said, I can still see us matching or improving on our win total from last year as I think that there is a change in point of view from the team and they are going to maximize the talent from each player and put them in positions to do what they do best. It’s just a damned shame we waste all that money and not get our 2 best free agents back (well, maybe two out of the 3 as Seymour was resigned).
August 3rd, 2011 at 1:53 am
i’ve never posted here but u guys need to recognize al davis knows what he’s doing. he’s a HOFer and one of the greatest football minds ever. nahmdi was way too expensive for a 30 yr old CB. the raiders aren’t going to win the super bowl this year. and aso has about 3 or 4 good years left. routt is younger and has developed into a very good corner. and we have 4 young cb’s to try to beat out CJ. miller was a good, even very good te but not great. he was not in the class of gonzalez or gates. he was an ok blocker w/ good hands who got open. a possession receiver. not a redzone target. not a gamechanger. as raider fans, we have been happy to love guys who were good b/c that’s all we had. miller was one of my favs but he was slightly overrated by raider fans. the wr’s/qb have a chance to breakout this year. campbell played well down the stretch last year and this is his 1st year in college or pros that he has had the same offense for 2 years. he sometimes looked slow to react but that may change as he knows more instictively what to do.
August 3rd, 2011 at 1:56 am
the running game will be very good again. the passing game has a real chance to emerge. the DL should be dominant. the LB’s much better w/ more experience. the DB’s have a chance to be very good. it could be a good year.

——————————————————-
Really couldn’t run against any of those teams. Are you deathly sure about that?
Lets break down the stats of the teams you mentioned shall we?
The Titans- Rushing plays: 26; Total Yards: 136; Average gain per Rush: 5.7 yards
Niners- Rushing Plays: 30; Total Yards: 110; Avg.: 3.7 WITHOUT McFadden.
Colts: Rushing Plays: 20; Total Yards: 80; Avg.: 4.0
McFadden only rushed the ball 11 times.
Steelers: 16 rush plays, 61 yards, 3.8 avg. Against the best in the league at run stopping. McFadden was hurt.
Dolphins: 12 rushing plays. less than against the steelers 16 yards mcfadden gets 8 touches and leaves the game injured again. After getting 63 yards catching out of the backfield.
So of the 5 you mention we couldn’t run against 2. 3/5 is not bad at all. And one could argue that when your #1 back isn’t healthy or not on the field at all the run game should suffer, and most of the time it did, with a few games of Bush stepping up in DMCs absence.
Those are all games Ill remind you where the game plan was pass first. In every game we tried a pass first offense not only did the rushing game suffer, the whole team did. We did not control the clock and the Defense was on the field far too long.

Maverick:
There is no sense to it.
January of this year this team was the best team we’ve had in 7/8 years with a record that’s 9-7 if Seabass had made that 25yrd field goal.
We were all excited about the prospects of this coming year.
Al then proceeds to cause upheaval by announcing it’s not good enough, firing yet another head coach, overpaying some players while refusing to resign players who were big on last year’s team.
He could have traded Aso, Miller, and Gallery the year before if that was his intention and got picks for them.
Now you wonder whether we’ll even keep Bush.
This is starting to look sad and I’m not even talking about the team.

________________
Wrong again. Hue took over the O and we turned into a creative offensive team that used our speed and diverse weapons and moved up from the bottom of the NFL in scoring to the top.
No. 2 in NFL in rushing too. You’re grasping at straws. You made more sense when we were horrible and had JaMarcus at the helm. As we improve your logic fails…..you are fading fast.
August 3rd, 2011 at 4:01 am
al davis may be 82 but his mind is sharp. he has been derided for having horrible drafts but that was based mainly on jamarcus, mcfadden, and dhb in back-to-back-to-back years. jamarcus had skills but a drug habit killed his career. mcfadden, who even i thought was a bust, emerged big time last year. as for dhb, he has not looked great but wr’s tend to emerge in their 3rd year. his college stats resemble tim brown’s and #81 didn’t take off in the nfl for awhile either so we’ll see about dhb. and remember, everyone suddenly raved about al’s draft last year after just about everyone in it looked good. i still believe al davis=the raiders. i love the man for giving us such a great team for decades. i’d rather be a raider fan than anything else. i’m w/ my man to the end.

we had the #2 rushing attack last year,I think. It wouldnt suprise me to see them start,JFB
August 3rd, 2011 at 5:38 am
Had to weigh in on this one:
First of all, I felt certain once the Wimbley deal got done, that we were close to freeing up enough cap space to bring Zach back. Didn’t happen – and now he’s a Seahawk. I wish him well; he was a true Raider while he was in town … he could block well, he was sure-handed and always a good checkdown. I do worry, however, about the long-term affects of concussions. But now he’s gone — no use lamenting; just time to get another jersey, I guess!
Having said all that, it is obvious that we are trying to build a better beast on O-line and D-line, which is what we should have been doing for the last five years. I still think there are a few moves to be made, and I think you’ll see a lot of short passes out of the backfield to supplement the run attack. I believe we can improve our record over the course of 2011 and make a serious push for the playoffs.

Writing is on the wall isn’t it?
He’s on the sidelines unable to practice, and the Raiders are bringing in guys who plays his position, who have started 80+ games in the NFL (Smiley).
Even if Campbell wants to go back to T, they drafted Barksdale, brought in this Heyer, brought back Barnes and seem high on this undrafted kid Pelc or whatever (he got some run with the 1’s last week).
Bruce Campbell is the epitome of all sizzle no steak. And he stunk in the preseason last year. Remember the Seahawks game, when he had 3 penalties in one series? If he can’t keep fringe NFL players out of the backfield without holding, how is he going to hold up against Det, NE, or the Pack this year?

On the Z Miller front. Although we have very little depth at the TE position I am confident in what we’ve seen from B Myers to date to say I believe he can come in and be the impact player we need from the TE position.
In fact I would suggest that we’re getting an upgrade with less miles and less concussions.
the real impact player that needs to be in the fold for a while is RFA M Bush. Lets get him in the fold for a few years and become that contender that I know we are.
Go Raiders.

At least we are bringing some competition fot the OL, Smiley used to be one of the best Guards in the league and Heyer, a young vet at 27, has started several games in his career.
Guard Justin Smiley was once given a 25 million dollar deal from Bill Parcells (2008), he’s a tough run blocker who, at 29, needs to stay healthy to become a starter again.
Stephon Heyer is a huge kid, with some potential if he can find a home, he’s played both Tackle spots and some Guard but he was lost last year playing in the ZBS.
Stephon Heyer, from scout’s inc.
“Stephon Heyer has started 33 games in his four year career and brings experience, toughness and attitude to the offensive line.
He is big physical tackle with limited athleticism. He wins with effort, technique and power when he is able to engage early in the play. Heyer lacks great lateral agility and balance which hinders his ability on backside blocks and on the second level.
He understands angles and ability to leverage defenders at the point of attack. Heyer has improved his hand use and can adjust to twists and counters when out of position.
With a high profile draft pick at his position, Stephon Heyer may be relegated to a backup role but will provide excellent depth along the offensive line.”
- The Redskins signed Heyer as an undrafted free agent out of Maryland in 2007. He has started 33 of the 49 games he has played in, including all 16 in 2009.
Last season, Heyer played in 15 games, starting five, and split time between right and left tackle. He made one appearance at right guard.

You see, this is the very crap that those ‘ol bastards overlook. Jerry Kramer isn’t in the Hall — and he even kicked the winning field goal for one of the Packer championships in the ’60s! One of the sportswriters on the program said this about Ray Guy: “When you are the absolute best at your position in the history of the game, how can you NOT be in the Hall of Fame?!” Another said, “Ray Guy wasn’t just a punter – he was a weapon”. I hope there is a solid push for him to get in within the next 5 years!!

Because under the new CBA he couldnt practice until tomorrow anyways, so whats the rush. He will show up tomorrow, sign his tender and hit the field.
Im only going to explain this to you one more time before I simply assume you are too dense to digest it.
1.Bush is RESTRICTED. He CAN NOT join another team without us getting 1st and 3rd round compensation, which is never going to happen.
2. If Bush holds out past August 9th, the new CBA Anti-Holdout rule says this year will NOT count towards free agency for him… therefore he will again be restricted next year.
August 3rd, 2011 at 7:04 am
You and I are the only ones who think ‘Beast’ Campbell is getting waived JFB.
——————————————————-
Damn, it’s been ONE year.
What has happened since the time we found out the owner was upset that the not retained coach didn’t play him and now that leads you to believe Davis would cut they guy?
I mean, there haven’t been any chances for him to build a case on the field that he doesn’t belong here. I don’t think Davis signs off on a cut, a la rumors of MM34 being cut last offseason.
August 3rd, 2011 at 7:04 am
Dirt Lot…I hear ya!
As for Moss…I can’t see him coming back. After seeing him quit in the end zone in 2006 and let that KC corner intercept the ball and walk off the field and not give chase…I mean, the bread and breakfast offense was tough for all of us to take, but Moss was getting paid to…oh nevermind!

August 3rd, 2011 at 7:07 am
what about reece as tight end????????
____________________________
I could see him working more as an H-back.
——————————————
Think of Chris Cooley, he used to be an H-Back under Joe Gibbs and Al Saunders turned him into a TE, but Cooley was never a traditional TE there, he was used more as an H-Back even if his “position” changed because he was not usually blocking along the line, he would line up and move around looking for a mismatch.
I think Reece’s role is going to increase substantially as he becomes some sort of H-Back under Al Saunders while Brandon Myers becomes the extra blocker from the traditional TE spot.
So now it will be Reece out running routes instead of Miller with Myers staying to block in-line.
I’m just guessing here but it makes sense to me.
August 3rd, 2011 at 7:08 am
Bush can’t leave this year we have high tenders on him, I don’t think he’s gone and obviously no ones talked to him cause rbs aren’t that valuable any more. I think hue knows how important bush is to the offense, al just needs to pay him.
August 3rd, 2011 at 7:10 am

So Satele was granted UFA and he returns to the Raiders with no chance to start at C?
Is Savage not looking savage, and Wiz or Satele will be moved to OG?
VERY surprising to see this decide to come back. I thought he would certainly go some place where he had a chance to start.
So JFB, do you feel a bit better about our offseason now that two of your OL guys are still here?
August 3rd, 2011 at 7:11 am
good morning AM crew,
nice to see your familiar monikers manning their stations here for the Silver and Black.
arguably the Raiders have lost a few of their best players of recent years in Nnamdi, Zach, and Gallery, but during their tenures here nothing much but losing games was the constant theme so I can’t really cry over the passing of the baton to other folks.

Must be some casual football fans here, when Chaz has played he was very good, DBs appeared to fear him, Chaz is a 7th round steal, a big strong WR with decent speed, lock him up for a few more years, if he goes elsewhere he will be productive with a decent O-line pass blocking for the QB, that’s what Floyd had in SD, once Hue Jacks establishes a OL that can keep the QB healthy all our WRs will be productive, Chicago has the same problem a crappy OL pass blocking for a good QB getting him killed.

I agree with your premise that it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to play RG. Any ole stiff can play the position, including Beast.
The important thing to all of this imo the upgrade to the C and OT positions. RG and LG are going to be fine. Hell, play the loser of the Barnes/Barksdale competition there.

4Eva,
the lockout (bickering between the rich and uber-rich)pretty much clouded my interest in visiting this site for the past months, but it is good to re-up here in Raiderland.
when Jacoby broke his hand last week some writer offered ‘…he’ll likely miss the rest of training camp.’
I thought, “miss what?” A broken hand doesn’t preclude learning the formations and the assignments and the terminologies etc. Hell, it might be the best thing for the kid to not get whacked around in a meaningless preseason.
I wonder what Zach was thinking going to the Gulls. Tarvaris Jackson and Charlie Whitehurst aren’t going to get him to the pro bowl and the Gulls might well be the worst team in a bad division. Oh well, at least he’ll get some cash before his next concussion.
overall, everything looking good in Hue Jack City.

Zach felt jaded cause Al was signing fat checks and Zach didn’t get his.
I honestly think Zach’s feelings were hurt more than anything.
Like he was waiting on his girlfriend to call him back to confirm to pick him up for the prom. She calls and says that she’s trying to get her hair right, but the dance starts pretty soon.
Meanwhile, the tramp up the street buys him dinner and gets him drunk and says ‘fk that girl, Zach, you should be up here with me. I’ll treat you right, she wasn’t gonna put out like I will.’
That analogy was stretched to the breaking point, but yous guys get the idea.

Cable was smart to bring Miller up when he did. It was the first day this year that the temp hit 80 degrees. Seattle can be amazing on a sunny day. Also, the training facilities in Renton are brand new and top notch. Right on Lake Washington. Some of the players boat into practice. I don’t blame him for signing with Seattle. Unfortunately for Zach, it will not be a productive year. The Seahawks are horible.

That’s was what I was posting about ZM yesterday – the fact that he said he didn’t go there for money is a sham. He was good for us, but I’m not mad we didn’t give him 17 mil. I’m confident Hue and Saunders will put our players in a position to succeed. Our new TE, whether Gordon, Ausberry, or Myers may not have ZM’s totals, but they will be pretty close in my opinion…

I see Zach as having the potential to be that good. Christensen was a special teamer and a nobody for a few years before coming to Oakland and didn’t do much for a while even after going to the Raiders.
Tough call. As with anything, it could go at least two ways, but either
A) Zach is that good, or can be, and he’ll show out in Seattle because he never got the number of catches and plays he should have here
B) He give Seattle more of the same, above-average receiving TE with nagging injury issues.
It’s funny that ZM and Nnam leave after our best year in their careers and apparently on the rise. Gotta figure non-renewing Cable factors into this.

The Raiders don’t need Kevin Boss. They need to throw that money at Tatupu.
Also, let’s not put too much pressure/expectations on rookies. Especially mid to late round rookies. They have a loooooooonnnnnnng waaaaaaaay to go before they are productive NFL players. Practice performance in August means very little.
This Raider team is best positioned to seriously win.
1. Run the football +55% of the time…Smash DMAC and Bush all game long. Check the stats….this team wins when they get the ball
2. Utilize the screen game to DMAC, Bush & Reece….
3. Quick slants to the receivers
4 The defense is finally built to win. Al, realizing past mistakes, has dedicated resources to the Front7. Henderson is healthy and the rookie “NT” is under development. McClain with another year should be enough. JUST GET TATUPU AND PUT GROVES ON THE BENCH
Building a bully means the thankful END TO THE FINESSE SPEED football with its zone blocking and light in the pants DEs.

Don’t need a great pass catching TE if DMAC and Bush are ripping the opponent for a $1.50.
Get a big blocking TE….more Barnes too
August 3rd, 2011 at 8:01 am
SnB,
We shoulda snagged a younger OLB poised to be solid for a ways to come. Don’t know that I would throw that scratch at Tatupu, who is banged up pretty good and getting older.
Rather save the dough for Boss or another receiving threat.
August 3rd, 2011 at 8:01 am
Sorry to lose Zach, but if players don’t have any loyalty to the teams that drafted them, well ‘Next Man Up’. Boss would be a good replacement, and maybe give Algae Crumpler a look see. The need is for a stronger blocking tight end than Miller, Boss could be better than Algae.
August 3rd, 2011 at 8:02 am
Cable must be laughing his off at Al, after his unceremonius dumping …
so hopefully they’re hot on the trail of Boss, we are too thin at TE otherwise. But it’s all going to fall squarely on Jackson’s shoulders to squeeze the max out of some of the average talent on this team. Keep Bush! DHB either produces or goes this year. Campbell is doubtfully the QB that can take a team thru the playoffs. But I’m rooting them on one and all and psyched for Raida football!!!

****Must Read Raider Nation, I need your opinion*******
Lets be honest Raider Nation we were able to win a couple games last year with out Nnamdi on the field and w/o Zach Miller on the field, but lets be honest with ourselves. Besides freeing up some salary cap space, it did not benefit us to lose two of the most productive players for the last three years on offense and defense.
Nnamdi took away half the field, period! This helped the D backs focus on their jobs because no one ever had to help Nam but you can’t say that for the other DBs. How does this help a bunch of new rookie DBs who could be hit or miss? Johnson gets injured every year. WHo backs him up? Huff you can always expect a mental error or two, or three, you get the point.
Miller was our best WR, period! He kept the defense honest, whioch freed up space for DMAC to operate out the backfield. Plus, our WRs are projects and can’t catch, point blank. Zach had the best hands on the team. Yes, he was not the best blocker but we needed him more to move the chains than block. DO we need Boss? No doubt we do!
None of our new rookies or off season pick ups have improved our team, so far our signings have been damage control. None of our free agent pick ups improved our team.
No the sky is not falling, but I still have not found anything to cheer about yet. Some of you may say well we have stability. But how do you have stability when two of your best players that you developed leave the team and you get nothing in return?
It just seems like financially the Raiders don’t plan well. We over pay when it does not count, and under pay when it does count!
Am I missing something?

August 3rd, 2011 at 8:13 am
I agree, B. Groves need to be upgraded and the brass realizes that, but with that said, I think we need a sure-handed receiving threat.
We can’t run the ball every play.
Jacoby is a second year guy with 400-something career yards.
Chaz is, well…. Chaz
DHB is a Hue Jackson ulcer away from being a DB
Murphy will make a big catch then make a big drop.
Moore is a rook.
I think we need at LEAST one guy with some proven ability to catch the ball.
You guys forget that we have Gothel, who could be the OLB we’re looking for. I guess same logic applies there – unproven – but I still think hands are the biggest priority.
August 3rd, 2011 at 8:13 am
Zopi what? Loyalty to the team he wanted to come back to Oakland but we could not or did not offer him the guaranteed dollars. Zach earned his $ man and he has a family. I don’t blame the guy one bit for getting what he is worth on the market.

Still have a lot of JaDavis money still sitting there…and probably some money from deAngelo and Yvonne.
So be it. Playing a smashmouth, run heavy offense, with a bulky front 7 bullying the opponent and Wimbley getting to the QB will make this a successfull season.

The team is complete folks. Don’t need a vet receiver or cornerback…do need a vet linebacker though.
Vet receiver takes reps from Murphy, DHB adn Schlens….assuming Ford is the undisputed starter.
Don’t need great defensive backs to win if the Front 7 does its job.

D@mn this $#!t just keeps getting better. This is the weakest article I ahve read yet. In concept it sounds great to say we are creating the greatest show on turf with Al Saunders helping creat the bully. But laugh my @$$ off!!! The WRs for St Louis were beasts man!! Torry Holt, Issac Bruce, Az-Zahir Hakim could catch the ball and turn it up field. With the exception of Hakim. Bruce and Holt had great hands man. Ricky Proehl came off the bench and could catch better than every WR we have except Zach Miller…oops I forgot he went the Seachickens!!!!
Yes, I like the sound of creating the greatest show on turf but we have some work before we get there. #1 we need a consistant WR.

Its built more like those classic run heavy / strong defense teams…Big D-Line with a couple of big NTs to mix it up….big linebacking corps with Wimbley putting more pressure on the QB…..strong running game. Game manager as a QB with one solid deep threat and a couple of guys to make a catch or two.
This will win in the AFC West

Tight End Kevin Boss: “I Want to Finish My Career as a New York Giant”
August 3rd, 2011 at 12:00 PM
By Dan Benton
Yesterday, we here at Giants 101 passed along a little tidbit provided by Vittorio Tafur of the San Francisco Chronicle, who claimed free agent tight end Kevin Boss said he’d like to play for the Oakland Raiders.
New York Giants’ tight end Kevin Boss celebrates a touchdown with teammates against the Seattle Seahawks in the second quarter on Sunday November 7, 2010 at Qwest Field in Seattle. Boss caught two passes for 15 yards and one touchdown in the Giants 41-7 win over the Seahawks. (UPI /Jim Bryant)
JIM BRYANT/UPI/Fotoglif
“Boss said on Sirius radio he wants to come to #Raiders. Miller underrated blocker, so tiny edge to Boss there; no comparison catching ball,” Tafur tweeted.
As it turns out, Boss’ quote was taken completely out of context. We were e-mailed by Andrew Fitzpatrick, the Senior Director of Communication and Sports Programing at SiriusXM NFL Radio, who kindly provided us with the entire transcript. And although Boss did say the Raiders were an intriguing option, he never once blatantly claimed to want to play for them.
“Yeah, I mean, like I said earlier, it’s something out on the west coast. But I don’t know. We’ll see what happens. Ultimately, like I said, I’d just prefer to stay here in New York and finish my career as a New York Giant,” Boss said in response to being asked if the Raiders were intriguing to him.
Throughout the duration of the interview, Boss repeatedly made references to the Giants and his desire to finish his career there.
“For me, right now, the Giants, I’ve had a great four years here and it’d be hard to pick up and leave right now. Obviously, going back west wouldn’t, you know, I’m originally from Oregon so that’s something that’s in the back of my mind. But I don’t know. I think it’d be hard to leave New York,” Boss added.
In this hectic time of NFL free agency, it’s begging to seem like people only hear what they want to hear. As reputable as Tafur is on the West Coast, he seemed to read a little too much into Boss’ comments.
Although the Raiders remain a fit and an option for Boss, it’s crystal clear that he wants to return to the Big Apple.
Special thanks to Andrew Fitzpatrick for the transcript and clarification.
August 3rd, 2011 at 9:31 am
While fans affectionately use the first name of his players, “Nnamdi”, “Zach”, the truth is that they care a damn to represent fans, while more money is.
This has reached the NFL, the only solution I see true love to return to their teams, Rules are established for low wages, very high incentives and compensation for injury or cut.

I am noticing a shift in thinking with the Raiders. There seems to be much more emphasis on the offensive line with drafting and free agency. I think this is a step in the right direction and bodes well for us in the future. Losing Aso and Miller is not that big a deal, honestly. We just need to wrap up Michael Bush!

Is Cleveland really satisfied with McCoy & Wallace?
Is Miami really satisfied with Henne & Moore?
Is Seattle really satisfied with Jackson & Whitehurst?
These teams have NO CHANCE to win the division unless they get a QB imo. I wonder if Dungver has lowered the asking price for Orton yet?
August 3rd, 2011 at 9:39 am
Nnamdi was in a position where Al was just going to hang on to him as long as he could. Zach has too much of a downside, what with big money and a propensity for concussions hounding him. Building solid, physical lines is smart — and it’s the Raider way, anyway!

The Raiders dynasty is already a fact and the dynasty is moving in full harvest mode. Stand back. Prepare to salute and pay tribute … That is how Davis and his people are seeing it, anyway, and I think I agree with them. This is a serious football team, folks.
The Oakland Raiders are serious in a different way. They’re deadly serious, and you can take that for whatever it seems to mean. With Smiley on board, I don’t see the Raiders going after another OG.
WR and TE are still positions of need. LB to a lesser extent.
August 3rd, 2011 at 10:11 am
Shawn Andrews is a monster…Giants just couldn’t afford him and he didn’t want to restructure though hes almost 30, but I’m sure thats because of the slap in the face ’cause he loved NY. If we have some extra dough, wouldn’t mind having him. He’d be the starter on the right side for sure and would mentor young Barksdale the right way.
Now hype at all about any Redskin lineman that we picked up. If they couldn’t hack it over there and weren’t wanted on what was to me the worst o-line in football, they’re more than likely bums…. I’m intrigued by what Smiley can possibly do though…
August 3rd, 2011 at 10:11 am
Malcom Floyd – WR – Chargers Free agent WR Malcom Floyd is “nearing a decision,” according to NFL.com’s Jason La Canfora.
Floyd is the biggest free agent piece left on the market from a fantasy perspective. The Chargers are said to still be interested if the price is right, but the Ravens are among the front-runners. The Panthers, Cardinals, and 49ers are also in the mix. We’re expecting Floyd to land with the highest bidder. Related: 49ers, Cardinals, Ravens, Panthers
August 3rd, 2011 at 10:15 am
Not that interested in Floyd. We’re fine at the skill positions. Yeah, another WR would be nice, but that isn’t as pressing a need as oline and LB are…

ESPN, watch out. Here’s your next analyst.

The loss of Miller is a big hit but getting Boss would help.
Boss seems like he’s just playing the Raiders though and wants to stay with the Giants for more money.
Myers can block but doesn’t have the hands that Zach has. If Miller has had concussions it’s because he plays the game hard.

Satele is an important signing. Had to have insurance in case Wiz II isn’t ready, or can’t cut the mustard. Couldn’t go into 2011 with Parsons and Veldheer as the only other options.
Why haven’t the Raids made a dramatic signing yet, or retained Asomugha or Miller ? I think the answer is pretty simple. Jerry informed his readers that the cap is ‘nonsense’ and of no consequence in determining the acquisitions a team ultimately makes. Unfortunately, Jerry is wrong.
There was no way the Raids could afford Nnamdi. They were struggling to make cap room just to sign Miller.
Now that Miller is history, the moves the Raids were attempting to get done in order to be able to sign him should conceivably leave about 5 – 7 million to play with.
Expect one or two more player transactions. If brass decides Miller has to be replaced, Boss would be a likely target. IMO, Boss is every bit as good as Miller, if not better.
We’re pretty close to having a final roster of players from which the opening day squad will be composed of.
Then we can start the JaJason watch, wait for his inevitable meltdown, and wonder if Edwards can do any better.
Even with the lackluster free agency period, I’ve still got the feeling this team is a lot closer to making some noise and being a legitimate contender than most would believe.
If only the Raids had a better QB.
August 3rd, 2011 at 11:27 am
Most NFL analysts agree that the teams that have the biggest advantage going into this NFL season are the teams who finished strong at the end of the year last year. I don’t know about you, but the beatdowns we put on Chargers, Donks and Chefs leaves me feeling pretty good. I say we go at least 9-7 this year, which is progress. It might not get us the division title, but – I COULD BE WRONG, YOU KNOW!
August 3rd, 2011 at 11:30 am
The only ones with angst in Raider Nation are the “cut it loose” types.
Nope, this team is not made up of shiny skill players and fleet footed speed guys.
This team is all about running the football and stopping the run. Occassionaly go over the top to hit Ford. The Raiders would have made the playoffs last year if they were more run focused against the physical teams and limited the turnovers
August 3rd, 2011 at 11:46 am
If, If, If .. if we had re-played the game vs. the Niners and if Janikowski makes any of those missed field goals against the Cardinals, who knows? The way we were finishing up the year, I don’t anyone wanted a piece of us. Well, just settle back … Raiders of old, I think THIS year will make you proud!
