Raiders training camp practice highlights, notes and quotes
By Steve Corkran
Friday, August 5th, 2011 at 7:35 pm in Oakland Raiders.
It used to be commonplace during quarterback Rich Gannon’s tenure here in seven-on-seven passing drills for the ball to find its target time after time, rarely hitting the ground.
Friday’s seven-on-seven session looked much the same, with backup quarterbacks Kyle Boller and Trent Edwards dissecting the defense time and again, the way it’s supposed to work in such a drill.
Boller worked with the first-team offense, Edwards with the second-team because starter Jason Campbell’s groin earned him some much-needed down time.
“He’s been throwing a lot and running around a lot, so I said, ‘Hey, today, buddy, let’s back you off for a day.’ And I’m sure we might rotate all the (quarterbacks) as we go through, just to make sure that I know that their bodies are good. All the crossing over that they do, the dropping and all the throwing, sometimes a guy can get a little sore. There’s nothing wrong with Jason. He’s ready to go.”
Campbell confirmed that his rest owed more to his arm than the groin he tweaked in practice Thursday.
“Just want to rest my arm,” Campbell said. “I’ve been making a lot of throws and everything. So coach just wanted to give me the opportunity to rest my arm since It’s kind of sore.”
Naturally, rookie wide receiver Denarius Moore worked his way into the picture as one of the standouts.
“There goes that man again,” is the way one player put it after Moore put a move on rookie cornerback DeMarcus Van Dyke that left Van Dyke looking for help that never came, as Moore blew downfield for a long touchdown.
A short time later, Moore made an impressive grab on a well-placed throw over the middle, with defenders all around him.
“Are you kidding me?” Raiders coach Hue Jackson said, when asked about Moore’s daily heroics.
*Cornerback Stanford Routt shadowed receiver Steve Goulet on a pass play, read the route, jumped it and broke up the pass.
That prompted Jackson to yell, “Hey, Stanley, that’s what I’m talking about. Now you got to come back to the next play.”
Fast forward to the next play: Goulet got behind Routt, hauled in a strike from Boller, with safety Stevie Brown late in help.
*Tight end Brandon Myers made a sliding catch of a pass midway through practice. Before he made it back to his feet, offensive coordinator Al Saunders had sprinted 30 yards downfield to tell Myers, “That’s the tight end we know. That’s the tight end we know.”
Rookie tight end David Ausberry gets credit for the catch of the day for a play on which he caught the ball with one hand as he was hitting the ground, after reaching high to get his hands on the ball and bat it into the air.
“I know I can make the plays, they know I can make them,” Ausberry said. “I’m trying to get that respect and get on the field to help.”
Myers and Ausberry received the bulk of the snaps at tight end Friday, but only because recen signee Kevin Boss wasn’t able to make it here in time for today’s practice.
Jackson said he expects Boss in the fold by Friday. “It’s time to go to work,” Jackson said of Boss. And, Jackson is eager to see Boss make people forget about the loss of Zach Miller to the Seattle Seahawks.
“He’s tall, he’s 6-6, he can run and he can catch,” Jackson said. “He’s a good blocker. He’s played in some really good football games. Very personable young man, loves football, loves competition and wants to be part of something great. My conversation with him at dinner the other night is that I needed a guy that wants to help get us to where we want to go. Sometimes, guys have to make sure they want to make that commitment because out here it’s work.”
*Former Raiders defensive tackle Art Thoms visited practice Friday. In keeping with Jackson’s desire to educate his players on the rich history of the Raiders, defensive line coach Mike Waufle called over Thoms, introduced him to the defensive linemen and informed them of Thoms’ exploits in a Raiders uniform from 1969-76. Class move by Waufle.
*Jackson is a man on the move, darting here, running there, keeping an eye on everything that transpires at practice.
Hence, it wasn’t surprising to see Jackson interrupt a footwork drill by the defensive backs and instruct them to run hard through the end of the play.
*”Oh, there’s a fight. I like it.” That was Jackson’s reaction when he spotted guard Roy Schuening mixing it up with a defensive lineman during pass-protection drills. Schuening took exception to the player tripping him after getting worked by Schuening.
For what it’s worth, there haven’t been many fights during practice so far. Not that Jackson is condoning such actions.
*Receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey practiced for the third straight day. And, for the third straight day he was limited to certain drills. For whatever reason, he hasn’t been cleared to take part in all drills, including seven-on-seven drills and full-team scrimmages.
*Rookie cornerback Sterling Moore quickly is asserting himself as a player to watch. He intercepted an Edwards pass on one play an broke up a deep pass on another one.
He said he welcomes the challenge, especially when he is lined up against the other Moore, “that man again.”
“Yeah, we go at it every day,” Sterling Moore said. “Sometimes, we’ll stay after practice and work on our own releases. So, we’ve got a little thing going where it’s a little rivalry. He got the best of me (Thursday), and I got him in one-on-ones a couple days ago, so we go back and forth.”
*Khalif Barnes took some reps at right offensive tackle, giving rookie Joseph Barksdale a breather. Barksdale took almost every rep Thursday and looked pretty worn out at one point.
Samson Satele split reps with rookie Stefen Wisniewski at center, with Wisniewski getting some time at guard. Satele and Wisniewski are going to have to earn their playing time, Jackson said.
“It’s respect,” Jackson said of giving Satele a fair shot. “You earn your way. As I said when we drafted (Wiz), we didn’t have a center on our team at that time. But we brought back a guy who’s started a lot of games for us.You have to earn your way up here. We’re not just giving anybody anything. You’re gonna earn it, and he’s in there competing. He is doing a tremendous job. He did a great job before Sammy got here, and he’s done a great job since Sammy’s got here.”
*Jackson said that receiver Louis Murphy still is “nicked up,” but that Murphy is getting close to returning to practice. Same goes for running back Taiwan Jones, who worked off to the side with trainers.
Murphy and Jones were among the 17 players who missed practice. Also, running back Michael Bush still hasn’t signed his one-year tender and he has missed every practice so far.
*Middle linebacker Rolano McClain was among those who missed practice. Jackson said he is being cautious with McClain and not wanting to wear him out.
McClain said he intends to speak with the media for the first time this season Monday.
*Undrafted rookie receiver Derrick Jones (California, Pa.) suffered a torn Achilles on Thursday. That all but ensures that he won’t be able to play football in 2011.
*Second-year linebacker Travis Goethel has worked at all three spots during camp. That’s part of taking advantage of Goethel’s versatility and determination, Jackson said.
“He can play all three spots,” Jackson said. “He is very bright, he is a hitter. He is a guy we lean on to do a lot of different things. (He’s) another one of those players who is young and talented on this football team.”

Sorry we missed out on Malcolm Floyd but if Moore can carry over his training camp into the regular season than it’s a moot point.

I wonder if the Bush contract is being held up because of the DUI he received back in February. Doesn’t that put him in the NFL conduct policy program? Al probably wants to offer less in a long term deal because of his lack of off season smarts. Either that, or maybe they are waiting on his pee test results…

August 5th, 2011 at 8:07 pm
We don’t have a Manning or Brady @ QB, but we look pretty solid with Edwards & Boller in backup positions.
Too bad they out lawed “stickem,” as DHB could sure use it. I hope he surprises all of us and steps up.
Hope I’m not too disappointed with our OL next Thursday as the line play will determine the effectiveness of our running game, and if they can hold, them a chance for our receivers to make plays.

Just one week after coming to terms with Edwards on a three-year, $8.5 million contract, the Panthers will lose him to a torn triceps muscle, according to Joseph Person of the Charlotte Observer. That injury usually knocks a player out for the year.

I think Denver’s only shot to win will be with Tebow on opening night.
The Denver fans want Tebow to play. If he isn’t playing and we jump out to like a 13-3 lead, that place will be quiet, they will be booing Orton, and they are too young and untalented of a team to overcome that emotional roller-coaster and the game will pretty much be over.
If said game is 13-3, and Tebow sprints out to the huddle to replace Orton, the place will go banana’s and the energy level of every Bronco will go up.
I just think Orton is beatable and boring, and that’s not a good combo for a MNF home-opener.

DonManoukiansNeighbor,
O bama just gave Republicans a bill that includes “98%” of what they wanted, Rep. Boehner’s words. Republicans now own this economy. It’s all on them. Remember, they said that tax cuts will create jobs. Boehner is boasting of the tax cuts in this bill. So, we should see jobs soon. If not, it’s on the private sector and the Republicans who insisted that lowering their taxes would fix the economy and create jobs. Good luck, GOP.
August 5th, 2011 at 11:43 pm
Raider, true. As i said, 5-11 this year, until Al is gone, that’s how it’s going to be.
August 5th, 2011 at 11:49 pm
You should have seen some of the comments in here earlier today, splitting hairs, crunching salary numbers and stretching logic to make Boss seem better than Miller. Miller is insurmountably better according to the numbers. Al has basically dismantled the team that improved by 3 wins last year.
August 5th, 2011 at 11:53 pm
JFB, whatever happens with the economy, it’s all on Republicans now. Rep. Boehner boasted of getting “98%” of what they wanted in this bill. He did a victory lap. Bragged about making O bama cave on just about every issue. We’d better start seeing those jobs, Republicans. It’s YOUR economic agenda being implemented now. Your baby. Your name is now on this economy. And it won’t be forgotten in 2012. So we’d better see those jobs.

I would not read to much into the WRs making plays right now. I mean it is good to hear our rookies are making plays and our veterans especially DHB have finally learned how to catch the ball, but the offense has the advantage. There is no pass rush in 7 on 7 drills. So you have better timing QBs have less presure and it is easier for WRs to get to a spot.

Getting Kevin Boss for half the price of Zach Miller was a smart move.
Both players can block and catch, with Miller the better receiver and Boss the better blocker and both guys have taken plenty of hits.
But in the end it’s hard to argue that Miller is twice the player Boss is, as their contracts suggest.
Let me be clear here, to me Z. Miller is a better player….but I’d rather roll with Boss for 8 million in guaranteed salary over the next 4 years than Miller’s 16 million over the same span.
This is how TE’s rated in 2010 in terms of pass blocking efficiency:
1.- Chris Baker
2.- Jim Kleinsasser
3.- Dan Gronkowski
4.- Daniel Graham
5.- Jason Witten
6.- Brandon Pettigrew
7.- Kevin Boss
8.- Marcedes Lewis
9.- Joel Dreessen
10.- Zach Strief
11.- Ed Dickson
12.- Tom Crabtree
13.- Heath Miller
14.- Jermaine Gresham
15.- Tony Moeaki
Notice that the top 4 players on the list are strictly blocking specialists, then come the more balanced TE’s with Jason Witten leading the way, followed by Brandon Pettigrew and Kevin Boss.
As you can see Miller is not on the top 15 but I’m assuming he wasn’t far behind, I don’t have the number but by all accounts he was a decent blocker.
- Here is the take of Matt Williamson of Scouts Inc. on the Boss signing:
“He’s nowhere close to the dynamic receiving threat that Miller is, but the best word to describe Boss is solid….He is solid in every area. His blocking should help the Oakland’s tackles quite a bit too on edge runs and pass protection. He’s a solid receiver.”
So, TE is set with Kevin Boss and Brandon Myers, but I think we still need to increase Marcel Reece’s role as a receiver out of the backfield to compensate for Miller’s absence.

August 6th, 2011 at 8:06 am
I liked Zach Miller here, I thought he was very effective and efficient in the passing game.
However, all the time he was with us, I screamed he was a terrible blocker, and I certainly won’t shy away from that now that he is gone.
Big upgrade in blocking with Boss, and big upgrade in salary-cap flexibility with him. Minor downgrade in his receiving skills as compared to Miller.
All in all, I think Al played his hand very well in this scenario.
August 6th, 2011 at 8:07 am
I would agree with this…but Al should have used this logic with Routt and Huff…Nobody made an offer close to what he paid. Routt is paid in the top 3 of CB’s and NO way is he close to that…

August 6th, 2011 at 8:09 am
STill concerned about Boss’s drop percentage though.
Highest amongst all TE’s, he dropped 11 passes which was twice more than any other TE in the league.
With the Giants, it didn’t matter as much if he dropped a pass, because they could go get 25 yards on the next play with Nicks.
Raiders don’t have the same luxury, at least as of yet.
Boss will need to reduce the amount of drops this season. 11 drops will be beyond unacceptable.

This was my concern with Boss. He is a better blocker than Miller which should help the running game; However it is the 60 receptions we need to address. A lot of people are saying that the RB’s and Wr’s will pick up the slack…not so sure as the TE receives a lot of the passes as a safety valve when others aren’t open or Campbell is pressured. Hopefully Boss or Ausberry can fill that void…

I’ve looked into the original drops article.
Kevin Boss has 15 drops over the last 3 years, with 11 coming last season, that means he had 4 combined drops between 2008-2009, so it’s not a historical trend but hopefully just an odd stat from a usually reliable player.
It even says in the article:
“As Kevin Boss has shown, you’re only a season away from your hands going from asset to liability”.
So I’m not worried about it, for now.
August 6th, 2011 at 8:38 am
Boss has concussion issues as well (3 in 3 years, was forced to sit out a few games due to it), and that is what some in the NY media (I’ve been tearing through google looking for NY writers and message boards thoughts) attribute to his drops last season.
Let’s hope this guy isn’t a little punchy.
August 6th, 2011 at 8:39 am
Here is some of the thoughts I stumbled across:
http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/giants/2010/09/boss-concussion-history-a-conc.html
August 6th, 2011 at 8:40 am
GM….NeilB and Warrior!
I doubt he’ll have 11+ drops this year. Lil Manning has more of a zip on his throws compared to Campbell!
August 6th, 2011 at 8:40 am
It’s not a concussion,just a nick.
August 6th, 2011 at 8:41 am
ZM same thing. He started dropping balls like hookers dropping to their knees late last year.
Getting Boss for less than half the price was a win for this organization. Especially since I seriously doubt if ZM is 100% from that foot injury. I’ve read somewhere that Gates still isn’t 100%. And you wonder why the organization was slow to make an offer?
August 6th, 2011 at 8:41 am
Ideally, Boss will be a major upgrade blocking, and asked to do less in the passing game than Miller, due to actually getting some NFL-level production from our WR’s.
August 6th, 2011 at 8:42 am
With this young O-line I think he’ll be blocking more than catching.
August 6th, 2011 at 8:43 am

There are three intriguing developments of this team that, in order, will determine its success in ‘11:
1. OLine and how that’s goig to shake out
2. WR corp and how that’s going to develop
3. DBs (are they good, OK, or just bad …quoue Routt, what kind of year are you really going to have)

Ray,
Just the facts man!!!
I think he will be fine, but let’s not roll him out on the red carpet as if he is anything other than a fringe Pro Bowl player at best.
We need to stop relying on 6 yard passes to our TE anyways. Good occasionally, not all the time.
August 6th, 2011 at 8:47 am
Yes, Boss and Miller share concussion issues, that’s actually one of the reasons we’re better off handing 8 million guaranteed to Boss instead of 16 to Miller.

I was Pee-Wee Herman for Halloween one year in college, and ended up doing an ad for a local liquor store that night (with others dressed up), so I could not live it down for about 3 years, because you always saw me on TV for Ray’s Liquors commercials.

Yes the OL is the biggest concern…I have a feeling Satele will start the season at C and Barnes at RT. Wiz may start at RG until he gets experience…

ESPN’s Bill Wiliamson’s take after visiting Raiders training camp:
“NAPA, Calif. — Hue Jackson doesn’t do anything slow.
He talks fast. He walks fast, and he coaches fast.
The Tom Cable put-your-toe-in-the-water-start-of-training-camp days are over.
There was no warm-up period to Camp Jackson.
In his first camp as a head coach on any level, Jackson has not wasted any time.
His team has been flying around the field and playing to the whistle on every play since the moment it stepped onto the pristine practice field in Wine Country last week.
Cable believed in getting into the groove of training camp slowly by holding glorified walk-through practices for the first few days while stressing the importance of the classroom. Jackson believes in teaching on the go.
Jackson sees a talented team in front of him, but he also sees a team that needs to block better on offense and tackle better on defense. It’s all about finishing plays on both sides the ball. If you don’t start, you can’t finish.
“It’s a fast game,” Jackson said. “We have to move fast. At all times.”
When they can catch their breath, Jackson’s players can see the difference.
“This is totally different, totally different from last year,” defensive tackle Tommy Kelly told reporters early in camp.
“I mean, he made that plain and clear in the meetings when he was talking about what we had to do … [Cable] wanted us to learn the stuff. But Hue ain’t worrying about that. He just wants to go hard as you can. If you fall out, we’ll put somebody else in there.”
There is urgency in Oakland. The Raiders teased their fans with an 8-8 record in 2010 — highlighted by an AFC West 6-0 sweep — ending an NFL record of seven straight seasons of 11 losses of more. This young team has a chance to continue to improve. Jackson isn’t going to sit around and wait for it to happen.
“We got to go now,” Jackson said. “I talk to them every night about that.”
THREE HOT ISSUES
1. How to replace Asomugha and Miller? The Raiders have to spend training camp trying to figure out how to replace two of their best players. Not many teams are dealing with that this summer. But the departures of star cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha to Philadelphia and tight end Zach Miller to Seattle create holes for the Raiders.
The Raiders gave Stanford Routt, formerly a part-time starter, No. 1 cornerback money in the offseason and expect him to take over for Asomugha. Oakland has reportedly toyed with signing another cornerback. But for now, veteran Chris Johnson and a host of young players, including draft picks DeMarcus Van Dyke and Chimdi Chekwa (who is currently injured), will be in charge of replacing Asomugha, who is arguably the best cornerback in the NFL. Safety Michael Huff, who just re-signed with the team, could also play cornerback in some situations.
The Raiders probably need to bring in a veteran receiver or a tight end. Right now, their starting tight end is Brandon Myers, who has 16 career catches. Miller was quarterback Jason Campbell’s favorite target, and he led the Raiders in receiving in 2010. He made the passing game go. A replacement must be established in camp. (Update: The Raiders added former Giants tight end Kevin Boss Friday.)
2. Is the offensive line ready? This has long been Oakland’s weakest spot, and Jackson vowed earlier this year to improve it. Finding a suitable unit will be a top goal in training camp. The team drafted Stefen Wisniewski in the second round, and he will start at center. Joe Barksdale was drafted in the third round, and he could battle Khalif Barnes at right tackle if he has a good camp. If second-year guy Bruce Campbell gets healthy quickly, he could make a push at guard, where the Raiders lost longtime starter Robert Gallery in free agency. The team wanted to sign left tackle Jared Gaither, but he is still dealing with back issues. This unit remains a work in progress.
3. Is Campbell ready to be consistent? This is Jason Campbell’s second season in Jackson’s system, and he is expected to make strides. He must show consistency in camp, and he must continue to grasp Jackson’s offense. He started slowly last season and was replaced. But he finished strong. Jackson is a believer in Campbell. Campbell needs to continue to build chemistry with his receivers and entrench himself as the leader of this offense.
CLEAN UP THE MESS
The Raiders have long been one of the most penalized teams in the NFL. It goes back to their golden era. Whether it is a cheap hit or a false start, the yellow flag is a familiar sight for the Silver and Black.
Jackson wants to end that part of Raiders lore.
The Raiders were ranked first in the NFL last season in accepted penalties with 604. It seems penalties have been overlooked in Oakland because it’s long been an issue. Jackson said he thinks that is nonsense. Playing clean football is an emphasis of this camp.
What does coach Hue Jackson think of the Raiders’ penalty problems?.
“It’s embarrassing. … You can’t win if you keep going backward,” he says. “I’ve told the team it’s got to stop. It’s not cool at all.”“It’s over,” Jackson said. “It’s embarrassing. … You can’t win if you keep going backward. I’ve told the team it’s got to stop. It’s not cool at all.”
DEFENSE STARTS UP FRONT
While the offensive line is still in flux, the Raiders are set on the defensive line. This camp is about establishing dominance for the group. If the Oakland defense improves despite Asomugha’s departure, the front four will be responsible.
There are several excellent pieces on the unit. It all starts with defensive tackle Richard Seymour. A likely future member of the Hall of Fame, Seymour is the best player on the team and the leader of his unit. Add Kelly, polished second-year player Lamarr Houston and run-stuffer John Henderson, and the Raiders are primed to dominate teams up front. Pass-rushers Matt Shaughnessy and Trevor Scott (if healthy) give this unit an important dimension.
OBSERVATION DECK
•Jackson has often lauded second-year linebacker Rolando McClain during camp. He said he thinks McClain has developed in the offseason, and McClain is expected to be a stalwart.
•Running back Darren McFadden was spectacular during camp before he suffered a broken orbital bone. He is expected to miss two weeks. The Raiders expect him to make a serious Pro Bowl push. He and restricted free agent Michael Bush should be a good tandem again.
•Second-year linebacker Travis Goethel could potentially push Quentin Groves at weakside, or Oakland could look for an upgrade elsewhere.
•The team is excited about fifth-round receiver Denarius Moore. He is polished and very fast and has a chance to contribute. It will be interesting to see him in the preseason.
•Seventh-round pick David Ausberry looks good as he makes the transition from receiver. He’s a project, but he has excellent size and speed.
•Fourth-year receiver Chaz Schilens is finally healthy, and the Raiders think he can live up to his potential. But his health is the key.
•Kelly looks tremendous. He is in great shape and looks primed to build upon his strong season.
•Trent Edwards will be given every opportunity to beat out Kyle Boller as Jason Campbell’s backup.
•Jackson said he thinks the Raiders fourth-round pick, speedster running back Taiwan Jones, could make his mark this season. It will be fun to watch him in the preseason”.
August 6th, 2011 at 8:48 am
I read an article on rotoworld saying the Raiders were losers this offseason because of the losses of key players and the overpaying of non-deserving ones.
Also, the fact Al couldn’t afford to bring back Z.Miller. When has it ever been proven that Al can’t afford anyone? Any player he wants, and that shares the same sentiment to join the Silver and Black, he will get.
One last thing, I don’t understand everyone bashing Routt. I have seen him mature as a player a lot like Nnamdi did. I’m not saying he is shutdown like Aso, but I bet he doesn’t see as many balls thrown his way. Other QBs will spread it around. I also predict that Routt will increase his Int’s this year. He won’t be facing the other teams #1 WR as much this year, and I think the big contract will help his confidence!
August 6th, 2011 at 8:52 am
I can take a wild guess but I really have no idea how this line is really going to shake out at least for opening night.
Will it be
Veldheer-Smiley-Wiz-Carlisle-Barnes
Veldheer-Smiley-Satele-Wiz-Barnes
Veldheer-Smiley-Wiz-Campbell-Barnes
Veldheer-Smiley-Wiz-Campbell-Barksdale
I have no freakin’ clue. The probability is you go with a more vet lineup to open this season in PRIMETIME. You dont want rooks getting cold feet.
COMPLETELY DOWNGRADED LOPER BASED ON REPORTS OF HIS AWFUL CAMP.
August 6th, 2011 at 8:56 am
I think it will be Veldheer-Smiley-Wiz-Carlisle-Barnes
…..to start the season.
If Smiley isn’t starting, he will probably be waived. Same goes with Carlisle. But both are good enough to start.
Bruce Campbell will probably go on some sort of PUP, IR or get waived.
Barksdale will get reps at RT, and maybe take the job after a few weeks, a la Veldheer last season.
Wiz will get the C job, but might be on a short leash to start the year.
August 6th, 2011 at 8:56 am
Plata,
I’m not bashing Routt. I just don’t understand paying him as the third best corner in the league which he clearly isn’t.
August 6th, 2011 at 9:00 am
Don’t forget Cooper Carlisle is back and Stephon Heyer is there, both have starting experience.
Nobody here likes Carlisle but he keeps winning the job and we keep churing out yards in the running game.

August 6th, 2011 at 9:01 am
Just Fire,
Rick Tittle was at camp on Thursday. He said Wiz is short (Tittle is 6′2). Not sure if that meant Wiz is shorter than him.
He said Wiz was getting beat like a drum by all D-linemen. Hopefully he is thinking too much and will get better at reacting and not thinking…somehow I think this is why Hue came out and said he would have to earn the position now and that Satele has a shot…

201, I fully understand that, but if he is what Al thinks he will be then now he is locked up for 5yrs (because of the restructure) and in 2 years his contract probably will be well below market value for a #1 corner. I’m not drunk enough on the koolaid to say it will happen like that, but I have to trust Al when it comes to DBs he has had a knack for finding and developing great ones!

August 6th, 2011 at 9:07 am
I thought prior to the draft, that Wiz would be better suited to start his career at G.
The guy has played ONE season at Center, his entire life. He switched between tackle and guard in HS, and played C his junior year in college only.
Let him get accustomed to the banging of the interior in the NFL, at a position he is accustomed to.
Just seems to make sense to me, but I’m not running the show, so I trust Hue will figure it out.
August 6th, 2011 at 9:07 am
That would be the 1st I have ever read Wiz getting beat like a drum in camp. Hue raves about the guy! Only time I’ve read him getting beat was BIG JOHN steamrolling his arse!
But hey, that’s BIG JOHN! And thats what he does one on one.
You should also we advised that Wiz is going up against Seymour or Kelly every play. That sht can’t be hard. Still I have not heard of him getting his arse whooped in camp
August 6th, 2011 at 9:08 am
Take a look at this Matt Shaugnessy scouting report, full with stats and stuff:
“Secret Superstar: Matt Shaughnessy, Oakland Raiders.
In desperate need of a turnaround, the 2010 Oakland Raiders found the strength to halt their fall and begin the climb back to respectability.
The impetus behind this shift was improved play from select position groups, most notably, the defensive backs, running backs, and defensive line, with the latter providing the backbone for all else to hang on.
The D-line itself was an interesting story that featured all of the parts that a hip team-of-heroes flick might.
The super-talented leader that has seen it all (Richard Seymour,) the underachiever that finally got his mind right (Tommy Kelly,) the brash and unpredictable kid (Lamarr Houston,) and the unassuming, overlooked stud (Matt Shaughnessy.)
It’s time now to shine light on that least-known piece of a line that has quickly become one of the NFL’s best. Matt Shaughnessy is the Secret Superstar for the Oakland Raiders.
Easing In.
The book on Shaughnessy coming out of Wisconsin was that he was capable as both a pass rusher and as a run stopper, just not outstanding in either facet. Also, with injury questions and a build that some considered too light for a 4-3 defensive end, there were fit concerns that pushed his expected draft slot into the 4th round.
Oakland, however, selected him with the 7th pick in 2009’s 3rd round and signed him to a four year deal.
Upon arrival, Shaughnessy was slotted into the left side, playing on the second team behind veteran Greg Ellis. Seeing time in just 37% of the team’s defensive snaps that season, he had to impress in sporadic moments of opportunity.
When given the chance, Shaughnessy showed himself to be a surprisingly stout run defender on the edge, and, though he had added a bit of bulk, his strength was most apparent.
Able to control and come off of blockers and use his reach to latch onto runners, he appeared instantly comfortable against NFL competition.
With a pair of particularly strong games against division rivals Denver and San Diego (combined nine tackles, seven stops and two sacks in those contests,) whispers suggested a larger role was on the horizon.
Starter Material
The Raider defensive line experienced an overhaul prior to the 2010 season. Gone were starters Ellis and Gerard Warren as well as rotational end Jay Richardson. Seymour bumped inside to take over the right defensive tackle spot and rookie Lamarr Houston was plugged in at left end. Shaughnessy moved to the right side to share time with flip-flopping DE/OLB Trevor Scott and both gave way to Kamerion Wimbley on third downs.
Now in his second season, Shaughnessy was making a living as an early down specialist, again playing especially well against the ground game. He was simply doing everything right when faced with runs to his side: sliding off of blocks, compressing lanes, and stringing plays to the sideline.
As a pass rusher, though, he was not generating much of an effect. While he did have five sacks in the first nine weeks, he only created four other pressures in 105 pass rush chances.
When Scott went down with an injury in Week 11, the door was opened for Shaughnessy to take on a legitimate starting role. His per-game snap percentage jumped from 49% as a split-timer to over 83% during the next six games.
That Week 11 game against Pittsburgh, in fact, was where he earned his best grade for the season (+6.3 overall and a huge +5.7 in Run D), stepping up when most needed.
His first assignment as the full time right end came, unfortunately for him, against Miami’s Jake Long. 80 painful snaps later, Shaughnessy was staring at his worst day as a pro. He got nothing done that afternoon, unable to shake the grasp of the game’s best left tackle.
Getting past that game, the remainder of his season was on track.
His run defense was remarkable: Shaughnessy finished among the 4-3 DE leaders in overall run defense grade (No. 5) and in stops (his 36 were seventh-best.)
Increased action in passing situations allowed for his
improving skills there to be seen as well. While starting those final games, he added 20 quarterback disruptions to his first half totals and his pass rushing productivity score jumped from 7.62 in the early games to 9.60 down the stretch.
Gotta Wear Shades
Having demonstrated his ability as a run defender and flashing his pass-rushing potential in these two seasons, Shaughnessy was named to our “All-Sophomore Team” and the smart money says there are even brighter days ahead.
He’ll likely never develop into a super-hyped threat that strikes fear in left tackles across the league, but he very well could end up as one of the most well-rounded 4-3 ends in the NFL.
With bigger names and bigger paychecks nearby, it’s easy to look past Shaughnessy when checking in with the Raider D-Line, but the time is coming for him and Houston, the youngsters on this line, to take over.
In the meantime, Seymour and Kelly will get the headlines, leaving Shaughnessy’s impact a relative secret”.

That Shaughnessy report was pro football focus by the way.

Right now I think that is most probablistic. It can certainly change however.
I agree that Barksdale may very well end up winning the war eventually but losing the battle to start the season.
I do not agree that Campbell may be pupped, cut or waived. He’s starting late in camp but he may eventually replace Carlisle sometime this season.
(It does concern me a bit how you such a line on the right side would be …so maybe Barnes mans the spot all season? Carlisle has been mentioned way too many times as cut bait for me to believe he survives).

Boss underwent offseason surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right hip, an injury that’s bothered Boss since he was at Western Oregon. He said the surgery has helped improve his strength and flexibility. “This is the best I’ve felt in a while,” he said. “I had hip surgery this offseason back in January and I’m completely recovered. In theory Wiz could be a better OG than Carlisle and Satele, right now, could be a better C than Wiz.
I just don’t know how its going to shake out. I doubt if the 1st preason game will be our starting OL by the end of preseason.
August 6th, 2011 at 9:32 am

*************************
Yes I do.
I think Wimbley is an elite pass-rusher and that skewed his numbers, because I didn’t see him making many plays in the run game.
But hey, who knows. Maybe he is the NT of OLB’s and his job is to just clog up his side and not allow his blocker to the second level (sarcasm).
August 6th, 2011 at 9:32 am
When Bruce Campbell hits the feild it will get even more interesting. Hue is going to be pressed for time. Its just not enough. He has to decide on the positions in short order. Mid the 2nd game, at least 3 of the starters should be determined.
August 6th, 2011 at 9:35 am
Anyone know if these preseason games can be viewed on those funky bootleg web-sites we used last year?
August 6th, 2011 at 9:37 am
That’s “By” the 2nd game
August 6th, 2011 at 9:40 am
That scouting report pointed out things I hadn’t considered. I think some of the same things you are questioning are things that were considered and applied to ShoNasty’s favorable review. Redirecting the play because you took on your man and didn’t get pancaked should count for something. How much, I’m not quite sure, but certainly can’t be dismissed.
I guess along the lines of the argument that Nnamdi is super talented despite the fact he puts up zero stats, Wimbley could be more effective than his stats are giving him credit for.
August 6th, 2011 at 9:40 am
Satele at center and Wiz kid at guard sounds good to me. I don’t want to see a repeat of a rookie center screwing up in the first game like last year.

August 6th, 2011 at 9:42 am
JHill, I agree. I would like to see Barksdale in asap, so putting a vet like carlisle in between them will help them a lot.
August 6th, 2011 at 9:43 am
Did Wiz play RG or LG in college?
August 6th, 2011 at 9:45 am
I believe LG.
August 6th, 2011 at 9:48 am
I just don’t see how Wiz could lose the C competition and start at OG.
Would Wiz have really beat out someone at OG?
If he’s playing well enough to start at OG then he should be able to play C. Yes, there will be some rookie growing pains, but I don’t think they will be any different than the mistakes that were made there last year.
If he can’t beat out Satele, he needs to be the backup C.
August 6th, 2011 at 9:51 am
I want to see Barksdale on that Oline at RT.
I could really care less about the OGs.
And if Satele can actually beat out Wiz for C, that could only be a good thing. I think we’ll be fine at C.
August 6th, 2011 at 9:58 am
Jhill, I agree with Barksdale at RT, but we need a vet at RG to help the rookies on each side of him. If not Carlisle then Smiley or bring in Waters or whoever! Build a Bully!
August 6th, 2011 at 10:03 am
By the 2nd preseason game (after the 2nd preseason game to be more precise). I think you just have to get at least 3 starters nailed down by then.
He already has a head start with Veldheer. So all I’m really saying is 2. You have to get these guys as many reps as possible togehter before the regular season starts. With a truncated offseason, the sooner the better. Its just not much time.
August 6th, 2011 at 10:23 am
Barksdale might end up at RG also…lots of possibilities…sure the coaches will sort it out…

—–
The thing to keep in perspective is that the Raiders really haven’t had a take charge WR in the last few seasons. Miller has been used a lot more as a primary target than a safety valve. In other words, over the last few years I saw more of the FB or 2nd TE being used for dump offs, with Zach running deeper seam routes to take advantage of him being the best pure WR on team.
Moving forward into the Boss era, it’s less about saying WRs need to pick up the slack as it is about WRs simply starting to play like and be used like WRs. And that’s starting to sound realistic if Schilens makes it out of preseason intact, giving them him, Murphy and maybe D Moore in more of a primary target way. Secondary targets can then be a combo of DHB and Ford on stretch plays, and then mix in the occassional surprise wheel route to Reece and TE seam patterns to split the two deep zones.
August 6th, 2011 at 11:06 am
Zymurge,
