Agent says WR Chad Jackson has joined Raiders

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Saturday, August 6th, 2011 at 12:03 pm in 2011 Preseason, Oakland Raiders.

UPDATE: Raiders confirm Chad Jackson signing, as well as WR Shawn Bayes and FB Bryson Kelly. Looking for healthy bodies to face Arizona and rest potential starters as much as possible . .

Chad Jackson, a former second-round draft pick by the New England Patriots out of Florida, has signed with the Raiders, according to the Twitter account of his agent, David Canter.

Jackson played for the New England Patriots in 2006-07, the Denver Broncos in 2008-09, spent time with the Bills organization although not part of the 53-man roster in 2009, and was with the Omaha Nighthawks of the UFL last year.

Wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey has yet to participate in any team sessions during practice with an undisclosed injury, participating in some drills, and Louis Murphy has also missed practices of late with an undisclosed injury. Undrafted rookie free agent Derrick Jones went down Friday with an Achilles’ tear.

Jackson has 14 career catches for 173 yards and three touchdowns.

What stat? the ones that bolster your arguement or the ones that tell a real story?

What were the WR stats for NYG wr’s last year compared to ours?

How was Boss’ red zone #’s compared to Miller’s?

How often did Zach provide that pivitol block for DMAC or Bush compared to Boss delivering for the Giants RB’s?

STATS ARE BOGUS, they can be twisted to tell many deceiving pictures…..Don’t be fooled.

You still haven’t answered, based on stats u compare……Routt is just as good as Nnamdi but kicked his A55 in a major 1, Routt was actually tested last year to the tune of 3x more often than Nnamdi and Routt still managed the same completion % as Nnamdi, which ups Routts value, ignore that stat some more for a bit to make your argument.

We survived Woodson leaving and we will survive this, THE ORIGINAL press cover corner is still teaching his ways with the Raiders, thank you Willie Brown!!!

Stanford Routt is now the NFL’s third highest paid cornerback. 5 year 54 Million dollar contract (that was what he was restructuring).

Can anyone tell me why we’re paying Routt but wouldn’t pay Nnamdi virtually the same thing?
    ***********************
Routts contract WAS 3 years 31.5 mil, 20 mil guaranteed.

Routts NEW contract is 5 years 54 million… 20 mill guaranteed. Same guarantees. We can cut him after year 2 if he doesnt perform to his money and be out the same as before the restructure, and if he DOES perform to it, then we have him locked up for 5 years. Win Win for us, and for Routt it was a win because he got a 10 million dollar check up front in the form of signing bonus, instead of his money being salary

This was my concern with Boss. He is a better blocker than Miller which should help the running game; However it is the 60 receptions we need to address. A lot of people are saying that the RB’s and Wr’s will pick up the slack…not so sure as the TE receives a lot of the passes as a safety valve when others aren’t open or Campbell is pressured. Hopefully Boss or Ausberry can fill that void…
    —–—
The thing to keep in perspective is that the Raiders really haven’t had a take charge WR in the last few seasons. Miller has been used a lot more as a primary target than a safety valve. In other words, over the last few years I saw more of the FB or 2nd TE being used for dump offs, with Zach running deeper seam routes to take advantage of him being the best pure WR on team.
Moving forward into the Boss era, it’s less about saying WRs need to pick up the slack as it is about WRs simply starting to play like and be used like WRs. And that’s starting to sound realistic if Schilens makes it out of preseason intact, giving them him, Murphy and maybe D Moore in more of a primary target way. Secondary targets can then be a combo of DHB and Ford on stretch plays, and then mix in the occassional surprise wheel route to Reece and TE seam patterns to split the two deep zones.

No way I would want to get rid of either Murphy or Chaz when they are primed to make huge leaps in production…. these young receivers aren’t static entities. They are progressing and will do more than they did last year. The added benefit of staying with these young guys is that we are building towards something greater in the future, in addition to developing chemistry with the QB… we suffered through the growing paiuns with these guys, it would be ridiculous to bail out now that they are coming into their own…

I know we all love the fleet of young, up and coming WRs on the squad. At the same time, there were a lot of cries to go get a true stud #1 WR off the market. Well, cap reasons and other priorities have made that difficult.

With Miller, as the best possession target in years past, gone, we’re looking for an improved possession game from Schillens and Murphy. However, if a reasonably priced veteran possession type WR were still on the market, it’s worth discussing.

Enter Jericho Cotchery. Recently made expendable from the Jets after locking in Holmes to a big money deal adn bringing back Plaxico for their #2 guy. I’ve followed Cotch for several years, as a depth player on my keeper fantasy team. In my mind, he’s a perfect fit for the Raiders offense. Aside from being a solid possession type that can also get deep, he’s a very good blocking WR, that has been one of the reasons that the Jets running game has been so strong. While he’s a a couple years removed from his 70-80+ catch seasons, he’s still good for 45-50 this season. Even in his reduced role last year, as the third WR in a run happy offense, he caught as many as the Raiders top WR (tied Murphy for 41 catches).

To me it comes down to whether he’s better than either Murphy or Schilens, since there’s only room for so many on the roster. Figure DHB and Ford now have automatic roster spots. If the team carries 5 WRs, then the wildcard would be D Moore and his camp super star show.

Assuming Cotch could be had for cheap, would you opt to have him over Schilens or Murphy, or all three with Moore on the practice squad? Discuss.

The helicopter was a twin-rotor Chinook, said an official at NATO headquarters in Brussels.
With its steep mountain ranges, providing shelter for militants armed with rocket-propelled grenade launchers, eastern Afghanistan is hazardous terrain for military aircraft. Large, slow-moving air transport carriers like the CH-47 Chinook are particularly vulnerable, often forced to ease their way through sheer valleys where insurgents can achieve more level lines of fire from mountainsides.

Michael Bush reports to camp according to RNS of facebook

  34. Bob Marley Says:

ESPN’s Bill Wiliamson’s take after visiting Raiders training camp:

“NAPA, Calif. — Hue Jackson doesn’t do anything slow.

He talks fast. He walks fast, and he coaches fast.

The Tom Cable put-your-toe-in-the-water-start-of-training-camp days are over.

There was no warm-up period to Camp Jackson.

In his first camp as a head coach on any level, Jackson has not wasted any time.

His team has been flying around the field and playing to the whistle on every play since the moment it stepped onto the pristine practice field in Wine Country last week.

Cable believed in getting into the groove of training camp slowly by holding glorified walk-through practices for the first few days while stressing the importance of the classroom. Jackson believes in teaching on the go.

Jackson sees a talented team in front of him, but he also sees a team that needs to block better on offense and tackle better on defense. It’s all about finishing plays on both sides the ball. If you don’t start, you can’t finish.

“It’s a fast game,” Jackson said. “We have to move fast. At all times.”

When they can catch their breath, Jackson’s players can see the difference.

“This is totally different, totally different from last year,” defensive tackle Tommy Kelly told reporters early in camp.

“I mean, he made that plain and clear in the meetings when he was talking about what we had to do … [Cable] wanted us to learn the stuff. But Hue ain’t worrying about that. He just wants to go hard as you can. If you fall out, we’ll put somebody else in there.”

There is urgency in Oakland. The Raiders teased their fans with an 8-8 record in 2010 — highlighted by an AFC West 6-0 sweep — ending an NFL record of seven straight seasons of 11 losses of more. This young team has a chance to continue to improve. Jackson isn’t going to sit around and wait for it to happen.

“We got to go now,” Jackson said. “I talk to them every night about that.”

    THREE HOT ISSUES

    1. How to replace Asomugha and Miller? The Raiders have to spend training camp trying to figure out how to replace two of their best players. Not many teams are dealing with that this summer. But the departures of star cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha to Philadelphia and tight end Zach Miller to Seattle create holes for the Raiders.

The Raiders gave Stanford Routt, formerly a part-time starter, No. 1 cornerback money in the offseason and expect him to take over for Asomugha. Oakland has reportedly toyed with signing another cornerback. But for now, veteran Chris Johnson and a host of young players, including draft picks DeMarcus Van Dyke and Chimdi Chekwa (who is currently injured), will be in charge of replacing Asomugha, who is arguably the best cornerback in the NFL. Safety Michael Huff, who just re-signed with the team, could also play cornerback in some situations.

The Raiders probably need to bring in a veteran receiver or a tight end. Right now, their starting tight end is Brandon Myers, who has 16 career catches. Miller was quarterback Jason Campbell’s favorite target, and he led the Raiders in receiving in 2010. He made the passing game go. A replacement must be established in camp. (Update: The Raiders added former Giants tight end Kevin Boss Friday.)

    2. Is the offensive line ready? This has long been Oakland’s weakest spot, and Jackson vowed earlier this year to improve it. Finding a suitable unit will be a top goal in training camp. The team drafted Stefen Wisniewski in the second round, and he will start at center. Joe Barksdale was drafted in the third round, and he could battle Khalif Barnes at right tackle if he has a good camp. If second-year guy Bruce Campbell gets healthy quickly, he could make a push at guard, where the Raiders lost longtime starter Robert Gallery in free agency. The team wanted to sign left tackle Jared Gaither, but he is still dealing with back issues. This unit remains a work in progress.

    3. Is Campbell ready to be consistent? This is Jason Campbell’s second season in Jackson’s system, and he is expected to make strides. He must show consistency in camp, and he must continue to grasp Jackson’s offense. He started slowly last season and was replaced. But he finished strong. Jackson is a believer in Campbell. Campbell needs to continue to build chemistry with his receivers and entrench himself as the leader of this offense.

    CLEAN UP THE MESS

The Raiders have long been one of the most penalized teams in the NFL. It goes back to their golden era. Whether it is a cheap hit or a false start, the yellow flag is a familiar sight for the Silver and Black.

Jackson wants to end that part of Raiders lore.

The Raiders were ranked first in the NFL last season in accepted penalties with 604. It seems penalties have been overlooked in Oakland because it’s long been an issue. Jackson said he thinks that is nonsense. Playing clean football is an emphasis of this camp.

What does coach Hue Jackson think of the Raiders’ penalty problems?.

“It’s embarrassing. … You can’t win if you keep going backward,” he says. “I’ve told the team it’s got to stop. It’s not cool at all.”“It’s over,” Jackson said. “It’s embarrassing. … You can’t win if you keep going backward. I’ve told the team it’s got to stop. It’s not cool at all.”

    DEFENSE STARTS UP FRONT

While the offensive line is still in flux, the Raiders are set on the defensive line. This camp is about establishing dominance for the group. If the Oakland defense improves despite Asomugha’s departure, the front four will be responsible.

There are several excellent pieces on the unit. It all starts with defensive tackle Richard Seymour. A likely future member of the Hall of Fame, Seymour is the best player on the team and the leader of his unit. Add Kelly, polished second-year player Lamarr Houston and run-stuffer John Henderson, and the Raiders are primed to dominate teams up front. Pass-rushers Matt Shaughnessy and Trevor Scott (if healthy) give this unit an important dimension.

    OBSERVATION DECK

•Jackson has often lauded second-year linebacker Rolando McClain during camp. He said he thinks McClain has developed in the offseason, and McClain is expected to be a stalwart.

•Running back Darren McFadden was spectacular during camp before he suffered a broken orbital bone. He is expected to miss two weeks. The Raiders expect him to make a serious Pro Bowl push. He and restricted free agent Michael Bush should be a good tandem again.

•Second-year linebacker Travis Goethel could potentially push Quentin Groves at weakside, or Oakland could look for an upgrade elsewhere.

•The team is excited about fifth-round receiver Denarius Moore. He is polished and very fast and has a chance to contribute. It will be interesting to see him in the preseason.

•Seventh-round pick David Ausberry looks good as he makes the transition from receiver. He’s a project, but he has excellent size and speed.

•Fourth-year receiver Chaz Schilens is finally healthy, and the Raiders think he can live up to his potential. But his health is the key.

•Kelly looks tremendous. He is in great shape and looks primed to build upon his strong season.

•Trent Edwards will be given every opportunity to beat out Kyle Boller as Jason Campbell’s backup.

•Jackson said he thinks the Raiders fourth-round pick, speedster running back Taiwan Jones, could make his mark this season. It will be fun to watch him in the preseason”.

  37. Kamikaze_Sensei Says:

I don’t see an issue with having Boss be a main receiver. Having an effective and utilized TE keeps the Defense honest and enables the deep threat since they have to cover over the middle more often. Plus from what I understand, our receivers are already lighting it up during practice, and with JC in for his second year, he’ll have a lot more synergy plus less baggage with him the undisputed starter.

Seems Chad Jackson is just insurance given that a couple receivers are “nicked”. I don’t think he’s anything more than that. At this point, I think we don’t really need a vet receiver, as long as Schilens doesn’t go kick a brick wall or try to out punt Lechler, both ending up with a broken foot again.

Whether it is called Code Black or something else, if we start a movement by bringing signs to games eventually the players and TV will begin to take notice. Of course creating that buzz goes hand in hand with the team playing well, otherwise it becomes laughable.

I can see it now though, black signs with silver letters CODE BLACK 2011!

Whole groups, even sections of people holding signs together forming one big picture, CODE BLACK 2011!

  67. raiderzmaverick Says:

Damned – I’m excited! It’s true hat we actually on paper should have a worse team than last year. Nnamdi’s replacement isn’t anywhere near the same level. As much as you guys rag on him, Gallery was a solid lineman, so a minor downgrade. Boss isn’t as productive as Miller. So on paper we should be worse.

But, I think we’re actually quite a bit ahead.
    1. Our QB play should be better just with a 2nd year in the same system.
    2. Our WR play should be lightyears better (Schillens playing?!?, Ford in the game more, Murphy more consistent plus Moore!).
    3. Our D-Line should play even better.
    4. I think the mentality that Hue will bring will win us more games. I think it’s a “knock them down hard” defensive mentality going through training camp and the offensive will make full use of all our potential weapons. There are many threats on offensive that Hue and Saunders will take advantage of.

Maybe it’s just wishful thinking – but…we could have the first winning season since Gruden!

  68. raiderzmaverick Says:

Restricted free-agent running back Michael Bush is officially back with the Raiders, after an unexpectedly long wait for him to sign his one-year, $2.6M tender. (there was question whether he signed his tender or got an extension – this answers that).

Hagen started for NY Giants last year when Nicks went down. Didn’t do much, but the fact that he was starting late in the season means he’s not just another scrub.

    =================================

I assume you mean Robert Gallery and Zach Miller. Neither was our best player.

Gallery wasn’t even close: a good run-blocking guard who could never hack it at tackle, and gets hurt constantly. You can have him.

Miller is an outstanding pass-catching TE, although last year he was only slightly faster than erosion. His run blocking was OK at best. I doubt we’ll miss him with K-Boss on board.

    Who is Chad Jackson?

Anyhow, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again.

Al has dismantled the team that improved by 3 wins last year.

Yes, Miller to Boss was ANOTHER DOWNGRADE. Stats don’t lie! One downgrade after another this off season. Al hasn’t improved the team in any facet. Nice way to capitalize on your best season in 8 years. Retire, baby.

What stat? the ones that bolster your arguement or the ones that tell a real story?
