Pre-practice odds and ends

By Steve Corkran
Monday, August 8th, 2011 at 2:55 pm in 2011 Preseason, Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders return to practice today after an off day Sunday. The provisions set forth in the new collective bargaining agreement mandates at least one day off after six straight days of practice. The Raiders received two within a six-day span.

It will be interesting to see if the two days off within the past week helps those who have practiced the entire time in training camp stay fresh and hold up well to the physical demands of coach Hue Jackson’s program.

It’s also about time for players such as wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey, offensive lineman Bruce Campbell and defensive end Trevor Scott to cut it loose. Heyward-Bey is the only one of the three who has practiced in any capacity, but even he has been limited to light duty.

Campbell has missed every practice so far with an undisclosed injury. Jackson said Campbell is “close” to seeing the field for the first time in 2011. Scott has spent the first 12 days rehabilitating from the left knee injury he suffered last season.

Rookie running back Taiwan Jones also is expected back soon. He is missing out on a golden opportunity to get in a ton of reps, with starter Darren McFadden out with a broken orbital bone and backup Michael Bush just getting back into the swing of things after signing his one-year tender Saturday.

*It’s about time for kicker Sebastian Janikowski to start working on his field-goal kicking. He has yet to attempt a field goal in training camp. Punter Shane Lechler already is well along getting himself into game shape.

*None of the four cornerbacks selected by the Raiders in the 2009 and 2010 NFL drafts has made a strong push for the starting spot vacated by Nnamdi Asomugha and occupied by Chris Johnson until now. Chimdi Chekwa is out with a left shoulder injury. Jeremy Ware, Walter McFadden and DeMarcus Van Dyke are getting reps, but none is standing out.

*The Raiders are going to be just fine with Kevin Boss at tight end now that Zach Miller is toiling with the Seattle Seahawks. That much became evident in Boss’ first practice since signing with the Raiders on Friday.

Boss is tall, fast, and he has sure hands. There’s no reason to think that he won’t at least double the 30 receptions he averaged in his four seasons with the New York Giants.

*The Raiders certainly won’t be travel weary as they open the season with back-to-back road games against the Denver Broncos and Buffalo Bills. They play their first and third exhibition games at home. Their road games are against the 49ers and Seahawks.

*Quarterbacks Charlie Frye and J.T, O’Sullivan, linebacker Ricky Brown and offensive linemen Langston Walker and Mario Henderson are the only remaining free agents from last year’s Raiders team who haven’t been re-signed.

The Raiders were interested in re-signing Henderson until he failed a physical. Trent Edwards made Frye and O’Sullivan expendable. The Raiders already have a slew of linebackers on their roster. Walker is the most likely candidate from the group of five to be re-signed at some point, but only in case of injury or if Khalif Barnes and/or Joseph Barksdale falters.

*People keep throwing around the name of former Raiders middle linebacker Kirk Morrison as someone who should be re-signed. Don’t count on it anytime soon. Rolando McClain is locked in as the starter in the middle, and Morrison’s best days as a special teams player are gone. Also, Morrison won’t entertain the prospect of being a backup until he has exhausted every opportunity of being a starter elsewhere.

The thing with Pryor is you’d have to use a draft pick on him,he’d be essentially useless this year no matter what position he played, and if you tried to put him on the practice squad, someone else might try and sign him.All that being said,i agree with you,4eva-pass.

Minny lost one of the Williams DTs, their DE Edwards, Rice, and their LT and you think they can beat us?

Miami doesn’t have Ronnie Brown or Ricki Williams to run the wildcat any longer, and Reggie Bush ain’t that guy.

Count those 2 games in the win column.
    _______________________

I think those are very winnable games and could mean the difference between making the playoffs or not.

The problems I see with those two games are:
    1) our run D vs Minny + road game and
    2) playing an early game on the East coast has always been brutal on us

  13. RAIDER Says:

Tom Cable to Hue Jackson – Downgrade. Hue has never coached a game. Cable improved by 3 wins in his most recent season.

Bruce Gradkowski to Trent Edwards as backup QB – Downgrade. Gradkowski’s stats much better than Edwards in past couple of years.

Nnamdi Asomugha to Standford Routt – Downgrade. If you need it explained to you, you probably need the sport of football explained to you.

Zach Miller to Kevin Boss – Downgrade. Miller’s better statistically. Boss led all TEs last year in percentage of balls dropped. That’s not good.

Downgrades all around the horn. That’s how Al Davis capitalizes on his best season in 8 years. No thanks to this year’s Raiders. Code Black? Sure. I’ll play along. But I’m not spending a dime.

WR Nick Miller, who made the team as an undrafted rookie out of Southern Utah in 2009, has been working as the No. 1 punt returner. Last year he averaged 7.3 yards on 35 returns with a long of 46. “I feel like this is my year,” Miller said. “Seems like they’re going to give me the opportunity. So, if they give me the opportunity, I feel like I’m going to take it.”

And look I told you guys Moore is not your ordinary WR he’s better than a lot starting WR’s around this league who are making a lot of money. This is extraordinary. The guy from the Packers? or maybe the Cheating Pats? (although Bellicheat may be the GM in Chowdertown.)

The guy from the Falcons can be dismissed after trading the entire team for a rookie WR.

The reason I bring this up and the reason I am so serious is because someday we will have to replace the greatest GM in sports. Hopefully it wont be in the next ten years but maybe after that.

There is something about going outside when it is about -5…..the air is crisp, the entire world is brighter in the day…..or at night it seems like the sky is clearer and the stars brighter than usual. The sound of the snow crunching under your boots. Your lungs seem to expand and fill beyond their normal capacity. Your lungs ache and burn with the cold air but it somehow feels renewing.

Thinking back to the day TC was hired as interim HC.

The old man clearly stated that one of the primary reasons Cable was being promoted (instead of being dismissed with Lame) was to ‘take control of the locker room’.

Apparently, he did a good enough job for Davis to give Cable a chance in 2009.

During the 2009 season it became clear that it would be impossible for ANY coach to win with JaMoron at QB. The Raids showed glimpses of life once JaMoron was benched. I think Davis was reluctant to can Cable at this point mainly for the sake of continuity, but also bcz he knew the deck had been stacked against TC.

So Davis allowed TC to return again in 2010. However, Davis surely had reservations about Cable, and brought in HJAX to help right the ship on offense. Insurance if Cable didn’t work out and Hue would be given a chance to prove his worth.

HJAX, indeed proved his worth. From the beginning of training camp, it was HJAX’s voice that dominated.
When the season commenced the Raider offense was still extremely lethargic. Tenn and and the first half of St Lou were atrocious efforts.

But the worm started to turn with the demotion of JaJason and the emergence of DMAC.

Suddenly, there was a breath of life. The wins weren’t piling up, but there was a spark.

HJAX, despite being handicapped by Gradkowski flaming out due to injury and overall lackluster play from the all important QB position was able to fan that spark into a flame. By years end the Raids would be the 6th highest scoring team in the NFL.

Smoke and mirrors ? Perhaps. A function of a weak schedule and poor opposing defenses ? Perhaps.

But facts are facts. And the fact is the Raids went from one of the lowest scoring teams in the NFL to one of the higher.

Once Cable’s relationship with Davis irreparably soured, HJAX became the obvious choice to be handed the reins.

Will Hue prove to be an outstanding HC ?

    Only time will tell.

But this long time Raider fan couldn’t be more enthusiastic.

How can you not love HJAX’s energy ? The man is dynamic.

Most importantly, he appears to get along and works well with AD.

Hue is in charge. He’s got a support staff in Saunders that frees him up to put his hands on all aspects of this team.

Doesn’t mean the Raids are winning the SB or even winning 8 games. There are still personnel issues (especially at the QB position) that need resolution.

But make no mistake, this is a team that is headed in the right direction and with a few breaks could surprise all the naysayers.

    ===============================================

As much as I HATE to say this, being an unbridled optimist, MR has a point here. Personally I did not like the idea of Cable getting the axe. The trajectory of the team was up, and the team played hard for him til the end. Including the ass WHOOPINGS we put on the Dischargers, Buncos, and in Kansas Shi**y to end the year. Hue may be fine, be he is a complete unknown at this point.

We have arguably lost our best offensive lineman, most reliable offensive player, and best defensive player. That cannot be good.

We lost a defensive coordinator that had us 11th in the league in total defense, had 31 years in the league, for a guy that wasn’t even coaching in the NFL last year. That cannot be good.

I am going to bite my tongue until the lst preseason game to see how this team comes out and handles itself.

This team is a lot better than 8-8 but IMO that is all Cable would get form it. When Mr D hired Cable he did so with the idea of him keeping house so to speak until he found the coach he really wanted to work with. I see why he went and got Hue and gave him the offense taking it away from Cable. Cable lost games due to just bad strategy and misuse of talent. Legalism. The police are establishing Assault, as opposed to a boxing match or somesuch.

Similarly, when someone broke into my car 4 1/2 years ago and was charged with trespassing, I was to appear in court and testify that I did not give permission for him to enter my driveway and break the driver’s side window. Again, it’s establishing clearly criminal intent.

Of course, the dude ended up skipping bail so I never had to testify anyway, but still…

  192. Mistic1 Tha Supavillain Says:

What happens to DHB this year? he comes in as the incumbant, if he performs then he starts, if he flops what do you do with him?

My prediction is that he continues to improve just as he did rookie to sophomore season. only this team his growth will be noticeable and his production will triple.

1.) DHB was only 20 when he came to the nfl. He has needed two years just to handle the physicality of the game, he was a boy amongst men. I think he is now able to compete with the big boys as his body has clearly matured over the past two seasons.

2.) His skills were clearly lacking polish. After being in the nfl and putting in extra work he has improved catching the ball and running routs. we saw flashes of this last year, he was solid vs jax and indy,( no drops i think) and he had his best game as a pro vs. seattle. Because of his work ethic this will only continue.

3.) this is his second year with hu jacks offense. last year just like his rookie year he was trying to learn the offense. he knows it well enough by now to just run, and not have to think. We all agree that thinking hinders his production.

4.) he has a comfort level trust and friendship with JC. they spent most of the off season together chemistry will not be an issue. DHB has never had chemistry with any qb since he has been here.

5.) Hu jack and saunders are noted wr coach gurus. if anybody can coach up the wr group its these two. Eddie kennison and az hakim flourished under suanders and neither of those two had DHB’s natural talent or skill set.

6.) there is now serious competition for playing time. DHB was handed the keys early not becuase he was qualified but because there wasnt anyone else qualified either. this is no longer the case. you will either perform or find the pine with hujack running the show. im sure DHb noticed d moore, and is eager to prove where e belongs in the pecking order.

I say 60 catches 700-800 yds, and 7 tds. I hope he can pull it off. with all of the selfish me first guys play wr in the nfl its nice to see a kid that struggled but kept his nose to the grind stone to succeed in the end.

All you have to do is see post 44 Big Ted 707 and you’ll see the “huge” upgrade in Hue Jackson over Cable. Cable reached his proper level as an offensive line coach. Above that, he was over his head. He was at the right place at the right time. Al had fired Kiffin and he needed an immediate replacement…and there was Cable. Even the players feel more confident and they like the upbeat temple and the new “bully” attitude. I wish Cable no harm or bad will, but I’m glad he’s gone and I like what I see about the new chapter in Raiders land.

  248. SnB Production Says:

    B,

Run defense is going to be fine. I actually think part of the problem was not acknowledging the need for a John Henderson or the will to develop a Derrick Hill.

Add the toughness being installed by Hue Jackson with the Oklahoma drills suggest no nonsense. Better believe a focus on run fits and penalties will help too.

The biggest problem historically was not respecting the role of the NT AND team toughness.

Those things are coming to together. If McClain follows through…we WILL be better than average.

  267. TerrapinRaider Says:

    Yeah, I thought so crickets!

DHB participates fully for the 1st time in practice and he’s making plays like everyone else. All you fools were doing was criticizing him because he was freakin’ injured and they were being cautious!

And for the record – I don’t get a hoot how he caught the ball! Because I’m already starting to read that crap. A catch is a catch! Period! T.O. was one of the best WRs in the league and probably STILL is, and most of the time he caught the ball with his body. This hand stuff is great but definitely not required.

  268. 504 Raider Says:

Whether we like or dislike Mr D is our own issue everybody who likes or doesn’t hate Mr D that dude calls them out of their names. He has his opinion allow others to have theirs. That’s all I’m saying…

Anyone think it would be a good idea to move either branch or huff to linebacker sets everyone once in a while to stuff the run. Or come up with some crazy blitz schemes, raiders ranked 28th in run D last yr

Priest o think we all agree that we hope DHB will pan out. But y waist the time when there are other productive WR’s on the roster
I think saying DHB is bust is safe to say.

But for the raiders sake if he pans out it’ll be a good thing

    Hey Mista, lol….

    Passion Baby…It clouds our minds.

I would say however, he’s at least willing to put it out and defend.

    Sometimes right…sometimes wrong.

I’ll take the optimist (koolaid) view of life all day long.

    Hope and Change! (politics aside.)

Great point about Boss not an option as MUP. Gut tells me Edwards. I love me some MM34 tho.

Priest…dude you gotta chill. We are all on the same team wanting our boys to win. DHB is a hell of a guy and a hard worker that was drafted too early and has had to deal with higher than needed expectations. He wants to be great and has a lot of skills. But sometimes it takes more to be a “football player”. I would love to eat crow and see the man turn out to be a perennial Pro Bowler. Just doesn’t look likely. Not to mention it appears we have some playmakers now!
