Pinch-hitting for Steve Corkran today and checking in before heading out to practice in preparation for Thursday night’s preseason opener against Arizona.
Looks like blog problems have been worked out . . . in the meantime, if you haven’t seen it already, here’s a link to Bill Plaschke’s column in the Los Angeles Times begging the Raiders to stay out of Los Angeles.
That ought to get the blood boiling.

dhb was targeted 65 times last year and caught 26!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That # inlcudes off target throws and passes broken up.
Of course DMac had 19 more catches than DHB in about the same attempts. Most of those passes are simple dumpoffs or screen patterns. DMac is not running vertical routes in traffic.

Hopefully It won’t be like last time I went to Buffalo in 08′ When we had a decent lead in the 4th only to have Rob Ryan go into prevent mode. I remember being so pyched when JLH caught a quick slant and went the distance. I haven’t watched the raiders win a game live since the 90’s! Ouch! This time better be different. I am a life long Oakland Raiders fan who moved to SoCal in 1983 and I think the Raiders need to stay home! They will always be the OAKLAND RAIDERS! Saying that, we sure as h$ll dont want the chargers!!!!

In the NFL WRs are pretty much the longest position to develop/mature/blossom. Huge diff between hs/college and the NFL. HUGE.
Malcolm Floyd, who many were wanting as a free agent is in his 8th year! Want to know what his numbers were in the first 3? They s*cked.
Vincent Jackson who has turned into a huge stud for the hated Chargirls, want to know what his stats were in his first years?
30 catches. 3 his rookie year and 27 his second.
Bey’s are better although still disappointing for me, him, the fans, his boss, etc.
How about someone maybe you know better, Cliff Branch, #21!
His receptions his first two years: 22 w/ 3 tds. And he was two years older than Hey-Bey and finished college before he was picked.
Calling Heyward-Bey a bust after one or two seasons is ignorant quite frankly.
I didn’t Al should have picked him 7th. Maybe 27th. But he did and here we are. Stick with him and he probably pays dividends in a year or two and maybe rewards our loyalty by re-signing with us instead of bailing once he’s good. But there is little doubt that he can be good. Maybe even great. I’ll settle for improvement and a bigger contribution now.
I would hope Al’s stays put but it will come down to a stadium.

Isn’t he a USC guy? Carroll is giving up on him, I think that should be a red flag right there. 2 years ago I would be all over this. I’d rather get Capt. Kirk back. He has more tread left on the tires and is more versatile.

I thought we were talking about Al Davis mandating DHB start.
I disagree with that notion.
If that was the case, I think we would also see Mike Mitchell starting at SS, and Wiz would still be the declared starter at C like it was loudly proclaimed on draft day.
If Moore or Murphy are better than DHB throughout the pre-season, they will play ahead of DHB.
No doubt in my mind!

Some of you are too caught up in where he was drafted and how much he was paid.All you should be concerned about is if he improves and becomes a good player.If he does,he plays.If he doesn’t he will eventually be gone.IMO,with his speed and size he deserves a little time to prove himself one way or the other.Many of you that complain about him also complain that the Raiders can’t develop players.How can a team develop players if they give up on them in a year or two as you would like to do with DHB?

I personally am not that interested in where a guy was drafted. I care about on-field production and to a lessor extent potential, and an even lessor extent cost.
DHB has, so far, been mostly disappointing in his production. He has been costly due to his draft position which as I think, was too high. But he has potential and obviously has worked very hard on his craft and on becoming a complete player (ie: blocker/decoy).
I suspect he’ll be pushed by some of the other talent the Raiders have and will improve in year three. Fact is however, receivers most often take a number of years to develop into the All-Pros we all want that kid and a top 10 draft pick to be.
Ask the Lions how many whiffs they had with top 5 picks at the WR position. My personal philosophy is not (EVER) take a WR with that high a draft choice. Too many guys can be had with better value props. Maybe the new rookie salary cap changes that.

you cant compare dhb to the likes of vjax or floyd BECAUSE of his draft position.. those guys were drafted where they were BECAUSE they knew they were pre-determined 2-3 year projects.. when you draft a player in the first round as high as dhb was, you have to expect production well before his 3rd season.. c’mon man stop making excuses!

The Plaschke guy (or more appropriately the sports mgmnt guru he quotes) is mostly right. Al and the Raider organization are ill-suited to that business plan/model.
Al does surprise me quite often however. I do however think the author misses or undervalues how much the Raiders market to minorities and diverse cultures. Which I think is AWESOME despite being a pasty nordic/italian person myself….

Your stats are BS.How many of those passes he didn’t catch were not catchable balls?How many were knocked down?What is the percentage of completions of the type of passes thrown his way-ie. short high % passes vs long low % passes?I think you’d be surprised to find those were more of the reasons why his % was as low as it was and not drops.I may be wrong,but I’d bet Murphy had a higher % of drops than DHB yet he is highly thought of on here.

@JRaider what excuse did I offer or state? I make no excuses for anyone: Crazy ol Al, the coaches, nor DHB.
I just happen to think most football fans have little grasp of the big picture and have expectations that are not always in synch with reality and how pro football operates.
I think DHB has been a huge disappointment so far. Obviously those professional coaches and managers in Alameda think otherwise or have insight to his worth or upside that I am not privvy to sitting at my keyboard or parked on my sofa.

JRaider your whole argument is based on draft position. That mattered 3 years ago. It is what we call in the business world, a “sunk cost.” Money already spent. Only thing that matters now is what can he give me going forward and what is the “opportunity cost” of doing so. IE: taking playing time away from someone who could contribute more AND/OR develop into something more valuable in the long run.
I though Al overpicked with DHB. DHB was a project more suited to a 21st pick say. So what? That is hindsight and not helping in 2011.
I HOPE the kid starts producing more for us as we NEED it. As we saw last year, Huge, was not afraid to throw someone out there who could make plays (JFord). I am confident he won’t this year as well.

DHB was not a 1st rd #8 pick. He was more of a 2nd or 3rd round project.
DHB is starting and playing because Oakland is paying him 1st rd money.
DHB has a long way to go but the right attitude to get there.

Seems to me like Hue is in to competition and will play to guys’ strengths and avoid showing their weaknesses. One of the major priorities of any coach.
At any rate, DHB will be given opportunities to show he’s ready to be a #1. That’s what we drafted him for, right?

This DHB arguement is interesting. Obviously, we have seen nothing from the guy, sans that one hundred yard game VS Seattle(?).
He is rumored to be a dilligent worker, so hopefully he can become servicable.
I think our WR corps will be above average this year. We will be able to sub in fresh bodies, all game long. If we go 3 wides, we should be able to gain an advantage somewhere.

The LA thing almost certainly will not happen.
Word has it the Chargers are going to exercise an escape clause next February to get out of their lease and move to LA.
Once they’ve moved, there will be ZERO interest in another AFC team, and neither the Raiders nor the Chargers would ever agree to an NFC switch.
If a second team moves to LA, it would either be the Rams, the Vikings or the Jaguars. If it’s the Jags, they presumably would switch to the NFC West, and another team (Cardinals???) would then move to the AFC South to replace them.

If the Commissioner had any good sense and if he looked more to the future, rather than satisfying the greed owners (wants to keep his job) then he would expand the NFL with (4) more teams. Owners don’t want to share revenues with other new teams.
Most LA football fans want a “New Franchise,” not someone else’s left overs. LA doesn’t need the bills or the Spanos and their dischargers. They want a team that is from LA and not tainted with the history of a different city.
Besides, LA, there has to be (3) other cities who can support and who would want a new NFL franchised team.

I have to disagree. There TOO many teams right now, some in very soft markets (St. Louis and Jacksonville come immediately to mind). If anything, the NFL should contract by 2 or 4 teams; this would also slightly boost the league’s collective talent level.

This is true. Baltimore was going to take him in the 1st round if he was there. Remember, the Raiders DID say they were exploring the option of trading back that year, but couldnt find a suitor, so they decided to stay put and draft the player they wanted, regardless of reach. And not enough blame is placed on Cable for the DHB selection. Because Cable was trying to build a team of “character” players. Al was going WR at 7 either way. If you recall, it was Cable who went back to personally work out DHB, to address concerns of hands and production. He knew he could sell Davis on the idea of DHB based on his measurables, because DHB is the guy Cable preferred, since he “had” to select a WR. Cable wanted an O-lineman that year, but since Al made him pick a WR, he picked “the nice guy”. I thought it would have been Maclin, which I was against at the time, but wouldnt mind so much right now. Anyways, just a theory about Cable and DHB. Im probably wrong about it, whatever. BUT, DHB wouldnt have made it out of the 1st round, whether we picked him or not.

Teams that are in supposedly soft markets, are usually teams that are not winning. If a team is winning the market is there. With the addition of 4 more “new” franchised teams, we would need an (18) game schedule, which eliminates (2) preseason games. Also, we have more than enough college talent to support (4) new teams, without question.
Again, keep in mind that no city wants someone else’s dirty underwear, they don’t need the Colts sneaking out in the middle of the nite to some other city. Give
new cities, like LA, a team they can build from the ground up…one “not” tainted.

The same people slamming DHB are the same ones that would have cut Mcfadden. So what if he was taken at #7. That’s where we picked that year. And you have to have someone to trade WITH to move down slots, so it’s not automatic. I don’t care how much he got paid. It’s not my money. I’m not sure why so many get their panties in a bunch over where he was picked and the paycheck. By the way, wasn’t it Jaloser that was throwing to DHB his first year?

DHB missed the first 9 practices. Do you really think he showed enough in 2 practices to start over Murphy (who has outplayed him the past 2 seasons), Schilens (who Jerry & Steve confirm is a #1 WR if healthy) and Moore (the rookie sensation) ???

I can’t just look at the WR position to answer that question. At every other position, it appears to be the best guy as the #1.
I feel the same way about Satle and Carlisle that you guys feel about DHB.
Some of the guys feel the same way about Tommy Kelly and Tyvon Branch.
I can accept that Satele and Carlisle are running with the ones because the coaches think that’s where they belong

Teams that are in supposedly soft markets, are usually teams that are not winning. If a team is winning the market is there. With the addition of 4 more “new” franchised teams, we would need an (18) game schedule, which eliminates (2) preseason games. Also, we have more than enough college talent to support (4) new teams, without question.
Again, keep in mind that no city wants someone else’s dirty underwear, they don’t need the Colts sneaking out in the middle of the nite to some other city. Give
new cities, like LA, a team they can build from the ground up…one “not” tainted.

Yes, the fans will be there if you’re winning. The problem is that EVERY team goes through down periods where they’re not winning, and that’s when a soft market can hurt.
When the Rams were “The Greatest Show on Turf,” nobody ever thought low attendance might force them to leave, but here we are in 2011, and they’re a serious candidate to move back to LA. Why? Low attendance.
Also, cities don’t mind getting established franchises. It certainly didn’t hurt the Ravens, or the Titans or even the Rams (when they were good).
An established franchise is also a quicker road to winning; not one single team established after the 1960s has won a Super Bowl except Tampa Bay (and technically the Ravens, but they were an expansion team in name only).

Murphy has flashes. Loooked great his 1st regular season game as a rookie (had TWO touchdowns. TWO) and also in Pittsburgh when he and Bruce took over. Last year had some moments here and there but overall, not really impressive. Hopefully it was just sophmore jinx.
I can say with a lot of confidence we have potential in the truckloads with the WR corps, just not the numbers (yet).

I thought Lou Murphy was on his way to doing some things. Then he got slammed, broke his collar bone, and just wasn’t quite the same when he came back.
Des Bryant, Bush, and Chaz were also playing hurt last year. Really missed Henderson in those games he was out.
Let’s just hope we get some luck with these injuries this year.

Everyone knows that DHB and Murphy play in different spots right? x and y, so in reality they could both start….its not out of the question and has happened before….Nick Miller makes it outta camp as the punt returner because he will play great in the preseason and be the #6 reciever. The only change in the WR corp. from 2010-11 will be Moore for JLH. Thats my prediction.

DHB has been the starter for the last two seasons. When have you heard of the incumbent starter not being given the chance to maintain his status on the depth chart? Let me help you out, you haven’t. This is a competition DHB deserves his shot to compete for his spot.
Who has proven to be better than DHB for us on Sunday’s? Ford played well but in limited action. Chaz hasn’t been on he field, murph has been wildly inconsistent & hasn’t been able to show the neccecary maturity.
I know this is difficult for people to accept but DHB is improving. He doubled his production from his rookie season. What evidence do we have that says he won’t continue to improve?
DHB worked with JC this offseason and they have established a chemistry in this offense. He apparently has looked good in his practices so far. Why wouldn’t he gay an opportunity to prove or disprove that he belongs in the top spot this season?
DHB has the most upside of any wr on our team, you can’t pull the plug until he stops getting better or he begins to regress.
Thank goodness Al & Hujack know better. If DHB doesn’t cut it he won’t be starting for the entire season, he knows this. He has worked hard for his moment, we will soon know if it will pay off.

Moving to LA is what gave the Raiders a bad name in the first place. Oakland Raiders were feared for their on-field intimidation and general a$$ whooping of the opposing team. DHB has no business being starter. The argument is ‘well he was inserted as starter day 1 and why shouldn’t he stay starter?’

I remember last year in preseason he did some good things. But his major problem is being fluid. Only time I saw a smooth-cath-and-run was the big one vs. Seattle.
I’d love to see more of it but like I said, production doesn’t merit his starter status and all he has is potential.
I don’t want him on the bench, personally. i’d like to see him get every opportunity available to succeed. I’m glad he kicked it with Campbell in the offseason, cause it seems Campbell was hesitant to look for him last season.

You can measure time with rocks. We know that layers of rock don’t happen overnight or even 6000 years (Gibralter looks pretty much the same, I believe). So why would rocks on the eastern edge of S. America match those in western Africa. And why would bones found in some of these rocks have many layers on top of them. More layers than can develop in 6000 years.
Anyway, there isn’t even really a debate here. Just felt I’d toss in my two cents.

Did you see this from Hue Jackson?
Q: We have to talk to you in the past last year about (Darrius) Heyward-Bey, you were very happy with his work ethic, and everything else. His downfield blocking and everything like that, but there was a couple of games late in the year where he wasn’t getting any passes. Why hasn’t he made the big splash numbers for a receiver that most people expect a first round pick to make?
Coach Jackson: When a guy is drafted in the first round we all want to see instant numbers right away and sometimes that doesn’t happen. Sometime it takes time and I take responsibility for those games where he didn’t call it. Sometimes you have to do things to get guys the ball. Sometimes whether it is a different formation, a different player, people play people differently. Those games where you think we were using him to do something else we were handing the ball to Jacoby Ford who was making a bunch of plays. He was very instrumental sometimes in some of the things that Jacoby was able to do. You know that Louis Murphy was able to do and Darren McFadden was able to do. I have seen a huge improvement with him and I think he has hit the ground running right now and doing a great job. But again, it is about performance in the game and that is what I talked to him about more so than anything. He now needs to make those plays in a game. Will he make some Sportscenter plays this year? There is no question in mind. It is time, you know, and I think he will because he has that kind of ability. Now it is time for him to go do it on a consistent basis and I think all of you will be happy with what you see him doing

I can’t disagree with you, but I think even Chaz and Ford had better stats in half a season (chaz injured, Ford not used properly initially) than DHB did in a whole one perfectly healthy.
At any rate, preseason will give DHB a chance against 1st team defenders and like I said, I’d love to see what we can get out of him. Ultimately, if he goes games at a time without a catch, he needs to sit.

Name one starting receiver in the NFL worse than DHB? Has there ever been a number one WR to catch 9 balls in a season? His 26 grabs last season seems magnificent after he was absolute garbage his rookie season. Interestingly, he was not the starter at the end of last year, which makes him being the starter now so moronic. If he is on the field more than as a 4th or 5th WR our offense will be playing 10 on 11 and the team will be back to 10 or more losses. period.

DHB has scored 2 touchdowns in 26 games. The only reason he plays is because Al Davis doesn’t have the balls to admit he was wrong.

Our entire wr core has under performed, why single out DHB? Comparing our number one to the rest of the NFL doesn’t matter either. We havnt had a wr prove worthy of the number one spot. DHB is on par with the rest of the raider wr. If he isn’t it must be proved or disproved on the field, bias from the fan base doesn’t change this fact.

Does AD mandate that DHB start ?
I doubt it.
Is there an expectation that DHB be given every possible opportunity to justify his selection with the 7th overall pick ?
Without a doubt.
Let’s not forget AD’s press release before last season in which he predicted great things for DHB and compared him with other Raider greats.
I don’t have a problem with DHB being given playing time he has not earned to this point.
There’s only one way to find out if he can realize his potential and develop into a player.
But at some point, trotting out DHB without getting any production in return, becomes too much of a price to pay in order to find out if he can actually perform.
Thus far, he’s been an immense failure. All that we’ve seen is the great size and speed. Would be nice to say that he’s even shown ‘flashes’ of ability that a top WR possesses, but I’d be lying if I said that was the case.
Bad hands (the final drop in KC was pure ineptitude). Leaves his feet to make catches when not necessary. Hasn’t shown the ability to track a ball or make a catch over his shoulder.
Still, the Raids have too much invested in DHB to just give up on him.
Personally, I don’t think he’ll ever amount to much. But I wouldn’t completely rule that out just yet.

I wonder if anyone at L.A. Times pulled Bill Plasche to the side and told him how stupid he sounds. Being that I’m originally from South Central L.A. I think he’s referring to the residents of South Central, Watts, Compton and East LA and is basically saying people from these areas would just come and cause a bunch of havoc as if good citizens don’t exist in that part of town. The video isn’t from the internet. It’s a video of Lawrence Krauss giving a lecture to an audience of scientists. He backs up everything he presents with proof. His lecture has nothing to do with religion really, he just provides proof on how the universe can actually be derived from nothing.

Genesis is written from a Divine perspective. That is to say, from the Beginning looking forward. As humans, we measure time from our point in the space-time continuum looking backwards. This makes all the difference.
The 6 days of Creation as depicted in Genesis, looking FORWARD in time, equates to aproximately 15 billion years, as we measure time here on Earth.
This is not an absurd rationalization. Any cosmologist will verify this.
50 years ago, if you asked scientists ‘how old is the universe ?’ – the overwhelming consensus would have been ‘the universe is eternal’. It always existed.
We now know that is wrong. There was indeed a ‘Beginning’. There wasn’t even a time ‘before’ the Big Bang. Time didn’t exist.
I’m an agnostic. I’m just not sure if there is a God or supreme being. I’m not a person of faith.
But I do find it fascinating and a little bit spooky that modern science has reversed it’s previous stance and confirmed the words “In the beginning,”.
Therefore, I will not condemn or resent anyone that believes the latter part of the first sentence of Genesis to be true.

AL also loves MM and Trevor Scott. His refusal to move on from bad draft picks has a lot to do with the team’s status as the NFl doormat. MM was a horrible selection in the 2nd round and T Scott should not be an every down DE, but Al thinks differently. We all know what happened when TC tried to cut MM last year. I think DHB was never supposed to be the #1 WR last year, but Chaz couldn’t stay healthy, so DHB was forced into the role. Now the onus is on Chaz to earn his spot back.
Murph and Ford are locks – DHB will be the one fighting for a roster spot if Chaz stays healthy.
This “unofficial” depth chart is BS imo.

I am an Asian American up here in the Bay Area. I happen to have an MBA, and have a good career. I am polite. I don’t have tatoos. I have never done drugs before. I don’t hit people. I am a bit preppy.I don’t wear spikes on my head or anywhere else on my body.
I love the Raiders. I love the mystique of the team. It is a reminder of the gritty competiitveness that was once American Football, which has now been usurped by corporate packaging and jogging practices with no pads on. Sports is about otherwise ordinary people pushing themselves to do extraordinary things. The Raiders remind me of that. Though, I must admit, Al Davis drives me nuts.
But this article drove me more nuts. First, it has a racial twinge to it that I find distasteful. Second, the author seems awfully arrogant to subordinate the many Raiders loyalists in LA that continue to follow the team. They remains fans for a reason, and the author seems to relegate them to triviality. Third, by his characterization of the Raiders organization and its fanbase, the author also insults the entire city of Oakland, which is a vibrant and diverse community. If he’s prejudiced against the challenges that Oakland faces as a community, he needs to look no further than LA’s own troubles with crime and poverty to recognize his hypocricy.
Shame on you, LA Times, for printing this piece.

Well well well. The 1st draft of the depth chart and wha’d ya know? …DHB tops the charts
I expect some changes on offense for sure with the starting lineup. For 1 I expect the OL to maybe switch 2 starter positions out of Loper, Carlisle & Barnes/Satele.
But back to the WRs. This is the most interesting. Ford over Murphy. What did I tell you? Last year Ford was taking snaps from Murphy NOT DHB!
It goes without saying that DHB must produce, but with Moore coming on strong Murphy may get his snaps cut even further (ignoring any injuiries to Schilens and/or Bey).
You boys give Murphy a lot of credit and he IS a good player; but trust me, he benefits tremendously from DHBs presense on the other side (queue Hue’s quotes will ya’).

If you doubt the veracity of a 6 day time period as measured from the perspective of looking FORWARD in time, from the ‘beginning’ – being equal to approximately 15 billion years looking BACKWARD in time, from our perspective – consult with any cosmologist or physics text book.
Has to do with the expansion of the universe. It’s standard cosmology, not idle speculation or a ‘nice try’.
