G’morning fellas.
Can’t believe it’s finally time for some Raider Ball. To quote Bart Scott: “CAN’T WAIT!”
Here’s my prediction for tonight:
The AZ coaching staff decides it might be more prudent to evaluate their new toy Kolb NEXT week, and he gets a quick hook after suffering a brutal beating in his brief appearance courtesy of LHouston, Shonasty and co.
I hope he gets up picking large clods of Coliseum turf outta his facemask.
Other than that, No injuries and Just Win, Baby!
August 11th, 2011 at 8:56 am
–”Chiefs signed OT Jared Gaither, formerly of the Ravens. Gaither apparently couldn’t pass a physical after agreeing to terms with the Raiders two weeks ago. The Chiefs are either more confident in Gaither’s health, or simply want to roll the dice on a guy that has immense talent at the crucial left tackle position. Gaither didn’t play a snap last season due to back issues”–
August 11th, 2011 at 8:58 am
lets hope both the raiders and the ravens’ physical staff made the right assessment… or lets say the 31 other clubs..

I’m on the fence with H. Eugene.
He plays well on special teams and usually around the football. I don’t care for him to sniff the field on D though.
Could care less if he’s cut or not.

Hate to do this, Deja, but you couldn’t care less. Saying you could care less implies that you care at least a little.
I like Eugene on ‘Teams, but if Stevie can take his spot, he’s expendable.

August 11th, 2011 at 9:09 am
KTLA isn’t showing the game until 2 AM my time now. Original 10:00 PM slot was pre-empted by a rerun of Vampire Diaries…Wankers.
August 11th, 2011 at 9:09 am
I think Eugene is replacable if he’s just plays a role on special teams. It wouldn’t surprise me if he doesn’t make the final 53. I really was calling for his head after the McGahee stiff arm! Man that was pathetic!

Isn’t our weakness at the OLB spots run support
***
LA,
I hear that ALL THE TIME on this blog and it’s complete rubbish. one OLB does not make or break your run defense. We’ve shifted through how many OLB’s the past 8 years?
It takes all 11 guys. the top 3 players responsible would be McClain, Seymour & Kelly. next 3 would be Houston, ShoNasty & Wimbley. your WLB is often in coverage (ask Jhill)
no offense – but blaming Groves for being 29th is just plain stupid imo
If it’s not the players, but the scheme – then the blame falls on John Marshall. But i’m torn here. If Marsh gets all the blame for the Run D, he also gets the credit for the sack totals
August 11th, 2011 at 9:22 am
Is the game delayed locally too? Sac ch. 4 has it in the program guide for 7pm. Of course comcast only updates their program guides every 7 years, so that doesn’t mean anything. Anynow, BRIEN, F#$# YOU!! Where you at, chump? THAT/S WHAT I THOUGHT!! YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

***
BCZ,
I’m still a fan of Kirk Morrison & Johnnie Lee Higgins.
I was wrong about Marcel Reece & Jacoby Ford. Right about Darren McFadden & Michael Huff
you win some, you lose some. Last year my unsung hero was Travis Goethel. I’ve softened on that stance a bit due to his coverage ability when playing OLB (still think he should get a crack at MLB). Groves played much better as the season progressed
This year my guy is CJ37. I’m going to battle with him as my darkhorse

Rockstar: I’d like to pick Morrison up to play on the outside. I just meant that he’s more suited to play there. The fact that his best season came playing outside backs my claim up. He can cover out there.
August 11th, 2011 at 9:39 am
Honestly, I think Capt. Kirk would be an upgrade over Groves at WLB cause of his coverage skills and he wouldn’t have as much responsibility as he did at MLB, just let loose on guys.

August 11th, 2011 at 9:41 am
All this excitement, best team we have had in almost a decade, best QB since Gannon, those bumbs that costs us so many games, Nnamdi and Miller, are finally gone, Al hired the best coaching staff money could buy, greatest draft class ever, and yet you people in Oakland still can’t give the great Al Davis a sell out in the first game?
LA RAIDERS ARE BACK BABY!

LA,
29th is a stat that reflects our run defense.
you don’t think much of stats?
stats tell the story of what took place on the football field.
sack stats = the Raiders were able to get after the QB
run stats = the Raiders were able to run the football
run d stats = the Raiders couldn’t stop the run
pass stats = the Raiders couldn’t pass on anyone
OL stats = heavily penalized, couldn’t protect the QB
the only variable stat from last season in my opinion is pass defense, because while we are considered a good pass d yardage wise, we gave up 29 TD’s through the air

Hey, I’ll be the first to hope Hue does a great job and that we (Raiders) become a winning team and dominant again. All this praise on Hue and he hasn’t even won his first preseason game. In the prior blog he was compared to Tom Flores (WHAT). Flores was our HC for ten years and won two Super Bowls. So, let’s calm down a little and take “see and wait approach.”
By the way, if Hue becomes another great HC, will Al trade him to Tampa for some draft picks like he did to Gruden, who then took the Super Bowl from us as a pay back?
August 11th, 2011 at 9:52 am

August 11th, 2011 at 9:53 am
I think part of the reason Goethel looked lost in coverage last season was the fact that he missed a lot of time due to a back injury. He was learning on the fly when he came back. While I don’t think coverage is his strength necessarily, I think he can do a passable job. More importantly, he’s better at shedding blockers than Groves or Howard which will make him an asset against the run.

The Autumn wind
The Autumn wind is a pirate
Blustering in from sea
With a rollicking song he sweeps along
Swaggering boisterously
His face is weather beaten
He wears a hooded sash
With his silver hat about his head
And a bristly black moustache
He growls as he storms the country
A villain big and bold
And the trees all shake and quiver and quake
As he robs them of their gold
The Autumn wind is a Raider
Pillaging just for fun
He’ll knock you ’round and upside down
And laugh when he’s conquered and won

YA,
excellent post, as always.
no doubt missing 10 weeks with a back injury as a ROOKIE late-rounder is going to slow your development. We selected Goethel out of AZ as a downhill player. He’s an absolute beast at stuffing the run, but he doesn’t have the quickness to play OLB. This guy should NEVER be in coverage. I don’t want to see him chasing little scatbacks or wideouts down the sideline – even your more athletic TE’s.
Whether he’s “good enough” in coverage to start at WLB remains a mystery. Now that he’s healthy and has another offseason under his belt, we should have a nice little sample this Preseason (possibly tonight?)
I’m still wanting Kirk Morrison as an insurance policy. If OLB is the entire problem with the run defense (which it isn’t) sign Capt Kirk as the solution

When the Raiders moved to LA the time was right, except for the political situation…(The Los Angeles Colisem Commission)(made up of the Mayor’s appointments) killed the deal from the beginning. Every promise made to Al was broken and after more than a decade of fighting these “political, moron appointments,” Al gave up and rightfully moved back to Oakland and Oakland is where our beloved Raiders should remain.
In regard to LA, potentially the 2nd biggest market for NFL football in the league, they need a new expansion team, not someone’s transplant like the Bills, or worse, the Spanos family and their dischargers. Get on the ball Godell, add 4 expansion teams, starting with LA.

Of course they didn’t sell out the 93k seat Memorial Coliseum, but with a new stadium close to Staples Center, which has proven to be a safe environment for Laker games, the LA Raiders will certainly average way more than the 40K or so attendance in Oakland.

False. I live in LA. The majority of Illegal aliens arent gonna be able to afford to pack games. You may see more illegals than you would at another stadium, based on location, you might not. But trust this much, Farmers Field, regardless of who plays there, will demand high ticket prices. Dont know what your idea of how the average Illegal American in SoCal lives their lives, but they usually arent making enough money to enjoy the luxuries of football games in brand new, majestic stadiums. To assume that Raider Nation would become “Illegal Nation” just because they move to SoCal, is ignorant.
And just so my stance doesnt appear biased, I love the Raiders, and selfishly because I live in LA, would love to see them here so I can watch them more often, but its the OAKLAND Raiders. Always.

———————————

There are very few NFL fans in Los Angeles. USC is the game in town. Go breathe the beautiful smog, Dakota!
