No practice today, coach Jackson speaks at 5 p.m.
By Steve Corkran
Friday, August 12th, 2011 at 3:24 pm in Oakland Raiders.
The Raiders won’t practice again until Saturday in Napa. They were given the day off today so that they could rest from last night’s exhibition game against the Arizona Cardinals. That doesn’t mean there isn’t any Raiders news to pass along.
Coach Hue Jackson will speak with the media via conference call at 5 p.m. At that time, he is expected to provide updates on the status of wide receiver Chaz Schilens and safety Hiram Eugene, both of whom suffered injuries against the Cardinals.
Eugene suffered a dislocated hip and had to be carted off the field. His injury appears to be far more serious than the right knee injury suffered by Schilens at the tail end of an end around.
Schilens was worked on by a team trainer for several minutes behind the Raiders bench. He spent the rest of the night sitting on the bench. He looked fine when he walked from the locker room to the field in the second half.
Beyond that, the Raiders didn’t have any players who suffered any obvious injuries. Who knows, though? We shall find out shortly from coach Jackson.

LA is a town of front runners. 10 straight years of brutal beatdowns has caused “Oakland” Raider fan to head for the hills here up north. Who wants to spend thousands of dollars to watch their ass get handed to them? The team loses, everyone blames Davis. If the team won, fans would show up in droves and no one would hate Davis. There’s an expression “winning takes care of everything”. It does.

Lets not “stomp” on his hands just yet, lets see if he’s playing in our first league game, and if he can live up to all the potential we’ve seen in him when he was playing. He has the tools and the skills, it’s only a health issue with him. So, lets at least hear the prognosis of his injury, if any, before we “stomp” on his hands.

All this bickering & throwing cheap shots each other is a waste of time and space. We’ve also got a number of trolls on here right now. If we just ignore them and not respond to their ridiculous taunts, we’d all be better off & maybe they’d hopefully just go away. This is a Raider blog & we should be discussing everything of interest regarding the S&B.
Here’s what we know for sure:
• The Raiders always have and will continue to be the “Oakland” Raiders
• Gradkowski is gone and will NOT be returning.
• Last nights game was only representative on what to expect when the 1’s were in there.
• On the O-line, Barnes & Carlisle need to be replaced immediately.
• SeaBass was Gold & I hope he continues this trend all season long. He’s a weapon from 60 yards in.
• Soup looked relatively good and he should have a good year.
• DMoore is the real deal and if he starts has a good shot at ROY honors.
• WMcFadden was a disaster last night.
• We will NOT be missing ZMiller this year. Our TE position is solid with excellent back-ups.
• Huff deserves some props. He’s stepping up right where he left last year.
• Bresnahan still has not shown us anything. This is especially true with the 2’s & 3’s.

There is not a single DC in the league that would ignore the threat of a WR who can beat them on one play.
The pass that Glo underthrew to DHB was a prime example.
DHB was 4 yds behind his guy after a double move, but there was a S behind the play. It would not have been a TD.
I just don’t see how some of you can say that there is never a S over the top of DHBs man.
You can joke about him potentially dropping those passes, but I think we all know he would catch half of them. Just like GBs WR dropped 2 sure TD passes, the 2 he caught we back breakers.

J Hill,
DHB sux. Face it..He make a million a catch. He scares no one except AL.
August 12th, 2011 at 4:07 pm
My biggest concern right now with our team is the play of our CBs. My second biggest concern on this team right now is our O-Line (specifically right tackle and left guard).
I’d like an upgrade at right guard as well, but he’s not as bad as everyone makes him out to be. Right tackle is a glaring need right now. We can’t have someone that is below-average AND makes tons of penalties.
August 12th, 2011 at 4:08 pm
The biggest strength on the team right now is at Defensive Line and Running Back.
August 12th, 2011 at 4:11 pm
DHB is always a threat of going deep. The percentages just aren’t good that it’ll result our way. He doesn’t catch almost 2/3rd of the balls throw his way. Some of that is due to drops. Some of that is due to not positioning himself well when the ball is thrown. Some of that is due to badly thrown balls. But he’s the lowest (even 14% lower than Murphy who dropped a lot).
I am hoping all that practice he did this offseason will raise those percentages and get him more “natural” of a receiver. In which case all those percentages and faults should improve. At least if it steadily improves by the time his contract ends he will be a solid receiver.
August 12th, 2011 at 4:11 pm

and if cambell can make decent passes. My main complaint for him is his throws are always to low. Needs to get it in the air more over the D lines. If cambell can get more confident with his ability this offense will be good.
August 12th, 2011 at 5:43 pm
My observances from the game last night.
The 3rd teamers stink.
DVD and McFadden have serious work to do. McFadden more so!
For a veteran, Khalif Barnes making three false start penalties is ridiculous. He needs to keep his his head in the game and stop thinking about catching the ball again. He needs to get lower in his stance also.
I like the way Barksdale looked out there. He should turn out to be a good one with more coaching and reps.
Wiz needs to keep working also on staying on his feet and maintaining balance.
1st team defense looked solid, and I liked the blitz packages.
1st team offense looked decent. Coach Huey was too conservative in the red zone and in 4th down situations. He should have went to for it more, to get his team some game practice on 4th down conversion packages. Going for FG’s in pre season doesn’t make sense, then again, this is Jano and he needs early game experience to get the cob webbs out before the start of season, so he doesn’t miss chip shots that may lose games. Ummmm…
Liked the way Moore and Ausberry looked last night and all the QB’s played decent enough for the first game. Hagan looked good also!
None looked to shaky or rattles and their passes on were good accept for the long ball tosses.
For the next game, I would like to see Coach Huey go for it more on 4th downs. The offense needs to run their 4th down packages in game situations as much as possible when they are on the other teams side of the field.

He needs to be aggressive and jump for that ball and bat that crap down.

Raids biggest problem is the WR corps…
No wait…
It’s the OL…
No wait…
It’s the secondary….
No wait…
It’s the LBs….
Hey, if everyone is right about all the problem areas this team is really going to suck.
Except I know that’s not going to happen.
How do I know ?
Because there’s one area that isn’t a problem…
We’ve got the great JaJason at QB !!
SERIOUSLY, there’s valid concern about all the areas mentioned above.
However, I don’t think that any of the perceived ‘problem areas’ are so horrible or are such insurmountable deficiencies as to prevent the Raids from winning the AFC West.
I haven’t had the chance to see last night’s game yet. I’ll get to watch it on the NFLN tonight.
Mistic was here doing his usual ‘JaJason is about to morph into Peyton Manning’ routine and clamoring about what a great performance he had last night.
Would love to see that.
The few plays I have seen didn’t impress, but I didn’t see it all. I’ve got a nagging feeling that Mistic was going nuts over another mediocre JaJason effort.
I’ll say it again for the umpteenth time…
Until proven otherwise, QB remains the biggest area of concern. The other problem areas pale in comparison.
August 12th, 2011 at 5:49 pm
for me the question mark is going to Chris Johnson, can he step up and be the guy on the corner, and don’t knock Routt, the guy is prone to give up a big one every now and then, but that’s because he’s a risk taker, and he’s been playing the slot, and man coverage against a crossing route through traffic can lead to a giving up a big one now and then.
But I’m going to be watching CJ, I just don’t know if he’s the guy…
August 12th, 2011 at 5:54 pm
and if are WR’s start playing for the PI call instead of going up and getting the ball, I am going to throw the remote through the TV!
Nothing pisses me off more than that, and yeah I’m talking to you Mr. Reese and Mr. Murphy.
Just catch the dang ball and let whatever happens, happen.
August 12th, 2011 at 5:54 pm
The 2nd team DB’s are going to have to step up as well as CJ and Routt!!
Barnes needs to step it the hell up also, or he will be demoted to the 2nd team if Barksdale and Heyer continue to play well!!
I’m glad we resigned Satele to compete with Wiz!!

RM99,
Glo had a deep pass to Reece that was not a good ball, imo. It actually was OOB, but Reece drew a PI call.
Glo had another deep attempt to DHB that was underthrown.
Those are the passes that concern me with Glo because he puts too much air under the ball.
All the other passes were on point. Even the intermediate throws. A lot of zip and very accurate.
Those deep balls are $ plays though. He needs to be able to get that ball out in front of the WRs instead of lobbing up rainbows.

What is the deal with 15,000 fans last nite? Not a good way to let Hue know we support him. People going to need to fill up the stadium so the team can feed of the fans and the noise.
Al will pack this gig up and move. Where to, I don’t know, but you’ll know when he gets there.
We do not want the Raiders to leave Oakland, so start showing up at the games and support the team. It works both ways people.
If we don’t support Al, he won’t we inclined to support the fans. Works both ways.

So with Schallens headed “not able to get up”, I guess it’s time for a revised WR depth chart.
DHB
Ford
Moore

Jhill,
Saw the JaJason pass to Reece, agree it was not a very good ball. Underthrown and close to OOB, but I don’t think that was a horrible toss. I like Reece’s chances on that throw most of the time. I thought Reece actually got away with offensive PI on that play.
Had a bigger problem with the 3rd and 2 incomplete to DHB. Didn’t like JC’s drop, stare down, lack of synchronization with DHB, lack of awareness of the DL on that one. Play looked awkward when it should be a gimme.
Maybe I’m being too critical there. I’d have run it in that situation anyway. Build the bully.

Coach Hue Jackson said earlier this week that, if “they’re keeping score, I want to win.” From that standpoint, Jackson has to be disappointed by the Raiders 24-18 loss to the Arizona Cardinals on Thursday night at the Coliseum.

Ethridge? what up
August 12th, 2011 at 6:26 pm
Backup cornerbacks Walter McFadden, DeMarcus Van Dyke and Jeremy Ware, as well as backup safeties Hiram Eugene, Stevie Brown and Jeremy Boyd all struggled in pass coverage.
The Cardinals netted most of their 297 passing yards against those guys, including all three their touchdowns.
A team can’t succeed without more than the starting defensive backs playing well. There comes a time when the nickel and dime backs have to hold up on a consistent basis.
The Raiders counted upon McFadden, Ware, Van Dyke and Chimdi Chekwa, as well as Brown, Eugene and others to help fill the void created by the departure of three-time Pro Bowl cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha.
It’s apparent that doing so isn’t going to be as easy as hoped for. Simply put, there is no realistic way to replace a player of Asomugha’s considerable talent. It’s going to take heightened play from every defensive player to help offset the loss of Asomugha.

I was at the game last night & just finished watching the game again on TV (taped it last night on ch.36). It looked like a different game in many respects as I sit on the East side so the taped plays are from a different perspective – reversed, from the West perspective. Interesting.
What was clear was that Barnes and WMcFadden were responsible for 60% of our penalties. WMcFadden was exceptionally bad. The game plan was pure vanilla. Our D 1’s are for real as is DMoore. Barnes, Carlisle & Loper need to be replaced and or moved to the 2’s. SeaBass is Gold anywhere from 60 yards in. All 3 of our QB’s looked good especially for the 1st game of the season. IMO, TEdwards should be the #2 QB. More the DB should get more playing time. He looked good for the sort time he was in here. NMiller will make the 53 as the #5 or #6 WR and PR/KOR.

Our #1 D-Line yes. Our #2 & #3 D-Line couldn’t pass the LOS. They were pathetic. The opposing QB could have been drinking coffee back there. We drop off badly when with any other than our 2’s. Notable exception, Moss looked decent. We also need a new weak side LB. Groves is NOT the man.
August 12th, 2011 at 6:47 pm
Raiders need to get Sterling Moore in there with the 2nd teamers and dime packages.
Barnes was the obvious one who struggled last night. For a vet like him to make that many penalties in a row in ridiculous! Barksdale and Heyer make get more and more reps. If Loper doesn’t step up than Heyer can play any guard spot or any tackle spot.
Raiders need to try and sign another vet CB from somewhere. I don’t trust McFadden or DVD just yet.
Raiders QB’s looked good overall, except when throwing the deep ball. Too may under throws.

Jarvis Moss is one of if NOT THE most important pick up from last year. The affect he can have on this defense can be huge great edge rushers are worth $60+ mill over a 5 year contract. To get an edge rusher for virtually a song is HUGE.
The kid is soo long and soo quick he’s hard to get your hands on him before he’s by you and on the QB’s back. That will cause them to shade protection his way giving Wim single blocker. And if we use LHouston up the gut on passing downs I have a hard time seeing these guys not exceeding last years 49 sacks. We shoud hit 60 sacks this year if JMoss is what I think he is.

I was thinking that last night as well. Perhaps Huey and Saunders didn’t want to show the red zone packages, but still, it’s the pre season and some packages need to be practiced in game situations to see how effective they are in a game!
Huety should have went for it on 4th down more often as well, instead of settling for FG’s, but it was good to get Jano ready for game situation kicks.
Next game needs to be the time to practice red zone packages to score TD’s and go for it more on 4th down.
Chuck B needs to blitz more when his 2nd and 3rd teamers are in there in the 2nd half.
Those guys need to build confidence and they need to win more often than they did in this last game.
