Coach Hue Jackson conference call transcript from Sunday

Here is the transcript from Raiders coach Hue Jackson’s conference call Sunday night, less than 24 hours after the 49ers beat the Raiders 17-3 at Candlestick Park:
Question: Doing better than last night?

Jackson: Yeah, I feel better. It’s a new day.

Q: How is Jason Campbell doing?

A: Jason, obviously, has to follow some protocol, but Jason will be practicing tomorrow.

Q: How much of a relief is that to learn Jason Campbell’s injury isn’t more serious?

A: Oh, it’ss a huge relief. Anytime a guy goes out and needs to be checked, you want to make sure that the next day that everything is going to be OK. He’s going to be well.

Q: How is Kevin Boss?

A: Yeah, Kevin has a knee sprain. He’ll probably wind up being week-to-week as we go forward.

Q: Similar to Chaz Schilens’ situation?

A: Yeah, probably something similar to that.

Q: Anything look better after watching the video of the game?

A: Yeah, there were a couple of guys. Darrius Heyward-Bey made some huge catches, made some plays. Denarius Moore made some plays. Our pass protection units were doing a good job. We still need to improve some things communication-wise in that area but, as a unit, those guys are doing a good job as far as protecting the quarterback.

Q: Any closer to settling upon a starting offensive line?

A: Oh, yeah, we’re getting very close to that. Obviously, we got four preseason games but, as we continue to get people back — hopefully we’ll get a couple more guys back this week — we’ll be closer to making sure that we put those five guys out there.

Q: Will you be more apt to go live in practice to deal with run defense?

A: That’s something that I always keep in my back pocket. As I put the schedule together for tomorrow’s practice and meet with the coaches, we’ll make a decision of what we need to do.

Q: Were run defense problems, technique, positioning or desire?

A: It’s more technique and fundamentals. We need to just continue to practice and hone in on the things that we know that it takes to play very solid, sound run defense. There were definitely some stops at some times but then all of a sudden here’s one skirting out of there, maybe someone jumped out of a gap or something like that. But I think when the players see the tape they’ll understand exactly what it is that we need to do. I know it sounds like a broken record but trust me, we’re going to get this fixed.

Q: With all the talk of building a bully, are you surprised at how far away that aspect is right now?

A: You don’t build a bully overnight. You don’t build a bully in two days or two preseason games. Don’t get me wrong, these preseason games are very important and they all matter. I don’t want to put that out there that they don’t. But I know come September 12th, they truly matter and our team understands that we need to make some strides and we need to get better and we need to keep working. We’re a work in progress. We know what the goal is. We know exactly what it is that we need to get better.

Q: Was the plan for only one series for Trent Edwards if Jason had not gotten hurt?

A: He probably would have went on and started the second half. We just didn’t get the ball on offense much in the first quarter, as you know. We didn’t have many shots. If I’m not mistaken I think our first team played 17 plays. We just didn’t have that many cracks at the ball. If he hadn’t gotten in there when Jason went down I probably would have started him in the third quarter.

Q: Thoughts on backup cornerbacks?

A: Obviously, DeMarcus Van Dyke went in there last night for (Chris Johnson). Again young player, has some talent and getting better. Again, working at it. Obviously Walter McFadden last night played again. Jeremy Ware played again. And (Chimdi) Chekwa played, that was his first action. Again, first time for the young man being in the game in a performance-type situation. He he did some things that he can build on, talking about Chimdi, that he can build on and continue to get better. We just need to continue to have those young guys play so they get the experience of playing in games and understanding what the NFL game is.

Q: Your defenders had trouble matching up with their tight ends. Is that a matter of guys getting beat one-on-one, schemes or simply matchups?

A: Definitely is something we can fix. We play some of the best tight ends in this league, you know. Obviously the young man down in San Diego and we know how to do it. Obviously, there was a couple of instances last night where we (weren’t) where we needed to be. But those things are all very fixable.

Q: Reaction to the shootings after the game last night?

A: I’m going to let (Raiders CEO) Amy Trask speak to that. My reaction is, I hope everybody is fine and safe. That it’s definitely an environment to where we wish that people come out and enjoy a game and hopefully that those things don’t happen.

Q: Anyone else come out of the game ‘nicked’ up?

A: (Jerome) Boyd, was the only other young man, and he had a contusion, and he’ll be day-to-day. But he has an opportunity to practice tomorrow.

Jackson: Let’s talk about something that’s really positive. We had 15 players today, including our top draft picks, Stefen Wisniewski, DeMarcus Van Dyke, and Chimdi Chekwa, they took time out during their day to visit veterans at the veterans home of California in Yountsville, located 10 minutes north of our hotel. That was a heck of a deal by our players on their day off to go do that today.

    Maybe he isnt willing to step back to WLB, he hasnt been garnering any interest elsewhere at MLB either.

    ***

    three teams sniffed Tatupu and he still isn’t signed and he was released 3 weeks ago

    It doesn’t appear that Seattle is losing any sleep over pitching their 28 year old 3x Pro Bowl MLB due to his contract demands

    His injuries must be more severe than anybody is letting on

    Kirk Morrison is the only viable option in free agency to fill the OLB void – if you want to call it that. He’s played OLB before. He’s played for Oakland before. He’s a Raider fan (hometown discount?)

  • LA to TheBay

    Bring in Capt. Kirk.

    Couldn’t be any worse than Groves.

    Kirk would have fewer responsibilities at WLB and is familiar with the system.

    Would he come back as a OLB though after being shown the door in no uncertain terms and replaced with a top 10 rookie?

  • RaiderRockstar

    McClain (and the LB corps in general) had a really bad first couple of drives. For all the talk about the CBs needing to learn how to “pull the trigger”, McClain is the one who most needs to learn when to trust his gut, shoot a gap and make a play. Too often he was a split-second hesitation away from filling a gap in the running game, and it resulted in 5+ yards.

    Makes me think that maybe McClain should be calling the defensive plays from WLB where he can still cover TEs and RBs, while focusing more on containing the edge by taking proper angles (something the coaching staff allegedly thinks he’s better at than shedding OGs and FBs on the inside). Considering how poor the edge containment has been, maybe moving McClain outside would help the Raider defense. It would also allow Goethel to move into MLB – a spot he seems like a perfect fit for.

    It’s entirely possible McClain is still learning and maturing, but if such a scenario has already “been floated within the organization”, it’ll be interesting to see how much patience the Raiders have.

    YA,

    excellent observations. something I’ve seen since May last offseason. However – I’ve taken a severe beating by fellow semi-pro bloggers for comments such as these (above). You seem to be one of the few voices of reason in here. I’m interested to see how these same bloggers respond to your critiques :)

  • Pretty Rick

    Bcz24,,,JFORD ran a 4.2,,he was going to the Raiders one way or another.

  • Kirk

    I think a lot of our problems against the run comes when we line up seven guys right on the LOS in preparation for a blitz. Once the ball is snapped if the running back gets one little gap, there is no one to stop him as we have put ourselves out of position. I would rather we disguise blitzes and not move out of formation to blitz until the ball is snapped. That helps us cover depthwise and doesn’t allow the QB to audiblize to take advantage of the blitz.

  • Kirk

    Raiderrockstar, if Goethel is better against the run than McClain, then move him to MLB. McClain is terrible.

  • DEATHROW 55

    Kirk needs to know it was a business decision that we had to part ways and hopefully he can accept a offer if we even reach out to him. He would start olb fosho, I hope hue realizes that groves project might fail and we need insurance. Plus groves will get hurt or romac so we need to think ahead or plug in francis and see what he can do.

  • LA to TheBay

    Coaches have to know that Groves is whack. Have to. He’s been playing against 2nd and 3rd teamers and getting abused.

  • LA to TheBay

    McClain = work in progress
    Wimbley = Not a true SLB, but an asset nonetheless
    Groves = puke

    Goethel = meh

    and then………….?

    We need a LB or TWO.

  • RaiderRockstar

    Kirk would have fewer responsibilities at WLB and is familiar with the system.

    LA,

    Morrison is a professional. He had plenty of opportunities to trash the organization after being traded to Jacksonville for next to nothing and chose to take the high road. He didn’t gloat when they beat us last year either. He realizes this is a business. I’m sure he knows by now there aren’t many (if any) starting MLB jobs up for grabs around the league this late in August. I’m sure he’d trade his pride for an opportunity to start for Oakland again in ANY capacity, the question is “Do Davis, Bresnahan & Biekert view him as an upgrade?” or perhaps Kirk is just waiting for another MLB starter around the league to get injured? But he better not wait too long, because after being out of the league for a year – career is done. It’s UFL time

    FACT: We have coaches for every possible position.

    STATEMENT BY HUE: We need to build a “BULLY.”

    We NEED….”ROMO” During the two years he played for us he was the man. He was the bully. Romo who “jam your eye-balls, bust your balls, dig into your throat and “spit” into your face.” At the same time he was talking non-stop trash. The whole week before the game, he would focus on “how much he hated the team we were going to play.” At game time, he was ready too cause big time damage. To be the “BULLY.”

    Hue, you need to hire “ROMO” as our BULLY COACH.

  • No Mas Diamante

    Our defense does not dictate. we react, and not too quickly. There is never any movement before the snaop, no camoflauge. I hope that was vanilla we played the other night because if it wasn’t then we are going to be in trouble. Our dline which is supposedly our strenght got handled by a very young niner line. not good..

  • LA to TheBay

    We were pretty vanilla, I think.

  • LA to TheBay

    If a move is to be made, gotta be made this week.

    We gonna draft Pryor in half an hour???

    Hagar,

    Mike Haluchak & Greg Biekert probably aren’t the two most sought after LB Coaches around the NFL. That’s who McClain had as a Rookie last season.

    This season? Biekert was promoted to LB Coach from asst and we added Ricky Hunley (from the UFL) as Asst to Biekert. Hunley is an excellent football coach, much more qualified than Greg B.

    McClains two DC’s have been John Marshall & Chuck Bresnahan. Chuck was in the UFL last year and now Marsh is in the unemployment line after coaching here.

    That should tell you something. Quality assistants don’t come to Oakland to get paid peanuts and get pressed under Al’s thumb. That’s we we draft young plays with POTENTIAL instead of college PRODUCTION and that potential never gets realized in Oakland. Results are bust after bust.

    We need to draft guys that are NFL ready & motivated enough to improve themselves and perfect thier crafts by whatever means neccessary. Waiting for scrub coaches to coach up raw talent is not a good formula imo

  • RaiderRockstar

  • Hagar the Horrible

    All this talk about bringing back Morrison. He was cut for a reason by Jacksonville and we traded him for a reason. We need to move on. Hey, he was liked by many and he’s OK as a radio commentator on Sundays (57 a.m. radio, LA) but we surely don’t need him at this time of his career.

  • Hagar the Horrible

    RaiderRockstar:

    Maybe you missed my point. First, Romo wouldn’t be a “scrub-coach,” but more IMPORTANTLY, Rome would be an “attitude coach” and that was my point! Romo brought an “attitude” to the game. First, hate your opponent and second, tear his head off. And, if you can’t do that, then the eye-balls or the nut sack were good targets as well. All the while, spiting in your face and talking trash = THE BULLY.

  • YoungAmerican

    Hagan. Moore and Ford can handle PR/KR duties just fine.

    By Bill Williamson

    Oakland coach Hue Jackson said his team went “backwards” in a 17-3 loss at San Francisco on Saturday night. I like that Jackson recognizes problems and is bent on fixing the issues. It bothered me when former Oakland coach Tom Cable put sugar on nearly every problem, downplaying major issues. Jackson seems focused on addressing problems and fixing them. That’s how a team will improve.

    Hagar,

    well he certainly wouldn’t be a “proven” coach with no coaching experience whatsoever!

    the guy is a supplement salesman, actor and Raider reporter. Who says the guy even wants to coach up young players and help them be great at the next level? just because Rod Woodson did it?

    I’m pretty sure I remember Romanowski applying for strength coach or team dietician before and Al rejected him. Doubtful he’d hand the man an even bigger assignment as LB Coach!

    Saint…: “Y’all want to replace McClain…How did you come up with “ALL?”

    Most of us think Rolando did pretty good in his first year as a Raider and in a pressure situation at MLB calling the defensive sets and making adjustments on the line, pre-snap. Don’t throw us all off the cliff. He’ll do just fine, much better than last year.

    By the way, if he had “ROMO” for about two weeks, he would learn to “hate” his opponents, bust their heads, jam their eye-balls, rip off their nut sacks and spit in their faces. He would be feared like Ray Lewis.

    Howard Green & Maake Kemoeatu still available in FA?

    Ray Lewis has that meaness and he brings it with an attitude to destroy the enemy. That’s my point. And, I’m talking about many Raider players. And, it’s just my opinion…right or wrong…I just feel we need to be mean and backup that meaness with an attitude.

    Hagan in >>>>>> Miller Out

  • YoungAmerican

    OK, so based on what we’ve seen thus far, here’s my 53-man roster prediction:

    QB = Campbell, Edwards, Boller
    HB = McFadden, Bush, Jones, Cartwright
    FB = Reece
    WR = Ford, Heyward-Bey, Moore, Schilens, Murphy, Hagan
    TE = Boss, Myers, Ausberry
    OT = Veldheer, Heyer, Barksdale, Barnes
    OG = Carlisle, Loper, Campbell
    C = Satele, Wisniewski

    DT = Seymour, Kelly, Bryant, Henderson
    DE = Houston, Shaughnessy, Moss, Scott
    OLB = Wimbley, Groves
    MLB = McClain, Goethel, Williams
    CB = Routt, Johnson, Van Dyke, Chekwa, Ware, Moore
    FS = Huff, Brown
    SS = Branch, Mitchell

    K = Janikowski
    P = Lechler
    LS = Condo

    It’s also possible that the Raiders could cut Loper if the coaching staff is comfortable with Heyer and Wisniewski at LG. They could use the extra roster spot for OLB depth – Davis, Blackstock, Francis, Gbadyu… Boyd is also a possibility since he’s seen some time at OLB and is having a strong training camp.
