Jason Campbell misses practice, but Ford, McFadden, Scott are back
By Jon Becker
Monday, August 22nd, 2011 at 4:14 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Jerry McDonald just checked in from Raiders practice this afternoon, where he reports that quarterback Jason Campbell (concussion) is not practicing.
Coach Hue Jackson had said he expected Campbell to be back at practice Monday after suffering a concussion during a preseason loss to the 49ers on Saturday night. There’s no immediate word on when Campbell is expected to be back practicing.
The good news for the Raiders is that wide receiver Jacoby Ford (broken hand), running back Darren McFadden (broken orbital bone) and defensive end Trevor Scott (ACL surgery) all practiced on Monday. For Scott, it was the first time he’s been able to practice since undergoing surgery for a torn ACL last November.
More to come later once Jerry returns from practice.

Most of the analysts seem to think that the Raiders drafted Prior as a receiver.
August 22nd, 2011 at 4:18 pm
By Mel Kiper Jr.
ESPN Insider
Archive In 1978, the Oakland Raiders took a fifth-round flier on a quarterback out of Kentucky named Derrick Ramsey. The Raiders were a winning operation and had Ken Stabler at quarterback, and the plan was to take a shot that Ramsey’s size (6-foot-4, 230 pounds) could work elsewhere on the field. While not dominant, Ramsey did successfully convert to tight end, and in a few years was catching 52 passes for 674 yards for the Raiders. Years later, Oakland also drafted Ronald Curry in Round 7 of the 2002 draft, and the former North Carolina quarterback switched to wide receiver and had three seasons of 50-plus catches during a good little career.
Neither guy was a star, but neither was expected to be. This is late-round value, and while maligned for their drafting based on value, the Raiders have been quietly as good as any team in recent years when it comes to finding talent in later rounds. They may have done it again.

EmailPrintComments58By Bill WilliamsonJust when we had our hands full with one young quarterback with a questionable future, the AFC West has added another in the form of Terrelle Pryor.
Oakland picked Pryor in the third round of the supplemental draft. The former Ohio State quarterback is highly athletic, but he is unpolished as a quarterback. There has been some talk he could be moved to receiver because of his size and speed.

Mr. Scott is back, man I hope Mr. Jackson and Bresnahan play him at WLB [ so do the DBs];

August 22nd, 2011 at 4:29 pm
EnglandRaider, I wasn’t “attacking” him for being a Christian. That’s a little dramatic, isn’t it? If I’m making fun of someone for having toilet paper stuck to their shoe, am I “attacking” them? Same thing here.

Trevor Scott thought he was starting at WLB last year, then someone had the bright idea to put Groves at that spot instead.
I wonder where Trevor Scott will take snaps this year?
I wonder if we go back to him in the nickel package instead of MM34?

On the Petros & Money Show, 57 am radio, out of Los angeles, they were talking to a beat writer who apparently knows Al Davis pretty good. He says Al has been evolving over the last few years and that Al now thinks it’s better to have a QB who can pass and run. A pocket QB is too much of a target and can’t make that big play on the ground when the opportunity arrives. He also said that Al is not too hot about Campbell and that it’s his last year of the contract. Sure, if Campbell delivers, he stay and rightly so. But, he feels that Al wants to give Pryor an opportunity at the QB spot first and if it doesn’t work out…there’s a chance that Pryor could be a good receiver with the “hands” like Gates down in discharger land. Food for thought.

Pryor is lucky as a rookie going to Oakland. Training camp in the Napa Sanoma valley, great weather, excellent facilities, great team mates and coaches who will embrace the dude. He, Pryor, also said he likes the raiders (may or may not be true) but it was the smart thing to say. With his 5 game suspension, there is really very little pressure on him. He can just relax and learn and he’ll have that much more of a starting run next year. Ya, enjoy California, the best state in the union, period.

The kickoff rule is one that might actually help the Raiders.
No more returns!
One could say (probably in error but…) that the Raiders would’ve gone 10-6 and won the division last year had it been in place.
Take back the 7 pts. AZ got on that return to start the game and we win.
Take back the 7 we gave away in Jacksonville and same deal.

There are a lot of questions about Pryor as a quarterback one of which is accuracy.
Which is why using our only (3rd) pick in the draft on him was a gamble that could have been better used on the line.
Most of the “analysists” are saying that the Raiders are going to make him a receiver. Do we need him as a receiver?

We didn’t look good in that Saturday game.
It was always going to be true that we would miss both Aso and Miller and that Al changing the OL would cause disruption.
But there were also a lot of injuries-rookie van Dyke playing corner for CJ and all the rest of it.
They stopped the whiners i think on the five yard line and ended that long drive.
Also, the Raiders pretty much took the 1st team out after the quarter but the whiners kept theirs in the game.
Us going for it on 4th down inside the five was dumb.
Whatever happened to the John Madden rule: “You always take the points”.
Going for it is always a 50/50 gamble and that’s a lousy bet.
August 22nd, 2011 at 5:36 pm
You rants should be at Wimbley and Groves.
Groves is so bad, he was still out there in the 3rd qtr.
Wimbley gave up the edge, outflanked the announcers called it, a few times.
Boyd couldn’t cover Davis.
Couldn’t get off the field on several THIRD downs.
I’d certainly take Vince Wolfork on the team, but we’d still have Wimbley getting outflanked on the edge, and Groves running around clueless.

Wimbley is a LB. He plays hand in the dirt too but he is an LB.
Groves looked like he was bout to break in the back half of last season. Not ready to write him off especially with Goethel limping off todays practice field.

Got to the house, we’re sitting at the table…guy to my left always calls no matter what…I’m sitting there, stogie in one hand and and a flush in the other and it starts to rain outside.
Then it rains harder and harder and then it just starts coming down like it’s the end of the world and there’s thunder and lightning going on and the guy’s roof starts to leak and we all walking around with fuk’n buckets.
Unbelieveable.

False! We stop the run Sometimes!
Many of these “big plays” are blossomed from plays the offense designed to get 3-4 yards.
Much of this is due tho our front 7 getting BLOCKED. That’s right folks the secret to our decade long poor run D is caused by getting BLOCKED!

I did the math my friend, and I am aware that the big plays count, but if you took away the 12 runs of more than 30 yards last year we averaged under 3.7 ypc allowed, would have put us in the top 3 in run defense. Thats it, 12 plays dropped us to the bottom of the NFL. I say it again, if the team could figure out how to stop the run and play EVERY down, we would be a very good run defense
That said, we CANT stop the big play, as evidenced by the 53 yard TD run Saturday. Until someone fixes that we will always be in the bottom of the run d standings

Watching replay of SF game. You guys should not be too worried. 1st team offense moved the ball on the 49ers 1st team defense on 2 consecutive drives for scoring position – scoringin the redzone will be fixed. Most certainly.
1st team defense actually played well. 49ers moved the ball on certain players, namely Boyd, Branch and DVD (and Groves poor play at times). Boyd and DVD are not 1st team but only filling in. Boyd really was not good in this game. DVD gave up one play. Really nothing to be concerned about except Branch.
Looking at Wiz, Campbell & Barksdale now …these boyz are good! These are your bullies Hue!
August 22nd, 2011 at 6:02 pm
you said everytime Seymour out there he gets doubled
—————————————————–
Well actually, you said that.
But to keep it flowing, you’re trying to tell me that John Henderson should be playing Seymour’s spot, and Seymour should be playing Kelly’s spot so Seymour can play avoid being doubled.
I don’t see any team leaving a G to deal with Seymour one on one. Just not going happen.
And if it would happen, you really think that switch wouldn’t have been made already?
You think Al Davis cares more about Tommy Kelly’s success than Richard Seymour?

Outside of that, 49ers really moved the ball and chalked up yards vs players you probably won’t even see in the regular season! No kiddin a bunch of backups and in some cases 3rd teamers beginning in the 2Q. I didn’t even recognize half of those guys! Thats when they began scoring.

Lotsa sour grapes on the Chefs blog. They all think Pryor won’t work (Rosenhouse doesn’t represent “slouches”) and they keep referring to hinm as a TE. Exclusively.
Also; digging on the Raiders lack of 2nd through 4th round picks in ‘12 but don’t refer to potential compensatory picks (Cryptkeeper Clayton of (B)ESPN conservatively predicts 3rd & 4th round compensatory picks for Oakland. Might be able to add a 5th. So there).

There were about 5 of you going back and forth on you UT, NT, NG, RDT, LDT, etc terminologies. I like to have some proof instead of just idle babble, so instead of taking your definitions, or Priests, or Dakota’s, or anyone else’s, it made sense to go to a REFERENCE.
Funny thing is YOU were not right, COW was, lol.
I thought both DTs SHOULD be lined up in the gap between the C and G and the DEs should line up in front of the OTs.
I was arguing with Priest that the Raiders line up one of our DTs directly over the C and used film to back it up.
I still think the way we line up with Seymour in between the C and OG, and Kelly directly over the other OG is flawed logic.

He certainly cannot take a hit from the blindside. I think he has issues with his neck. Thats the second (maybe 3rd) time he has gotten hit from behind and knocked out as a result.
Sadly, I don’t think his NFL career will last very long. All those years getting beat up in Washington

Look, if the Raiders sit back and allow themselves to get abused against the run…and then sit back with slick comments like discipline etc…then so be it.
I am so sick of the run defense problems that I my keyboard is “hoarse” from shouting about it.

As for Terrell Pryor….wasn’t for the selection but hope the kid is wildly successfull.
Just a note….can’t the Raiders try to and some singles and doubles in the draft etc…instead of always trying to hit home runs.
Another 5 year developmental guy…not a big fan of moving guys around from natural position…but that’s just me.
Sometimes drafting the kid that doesn’t necessarily have the fastest 40x for his position can work out too!

Why isn’t Tommie Hill getting more playing time?
I would really be interested in understanding the Raider philosophy to stopping the run. Because the look and feel is the same…1 cut runs…hitting the edge etc….
I don’t think 1 preseason game is worth panicking…but Henderson is not ready to go…that doesn’t bode well for the defense.

===================================================
Agreed. It’s real effin old. The Old Creeper thinks that if he hits just one more home run he’ll prove the naysayers wrong. Which he wants even more than winning.

This is where I can tell that you are running outta ammo.
***********************************
LOL now I know you are failing patna…..I’ve argued with Priest many times about where the NT lines up. I’ve never been wrong about it and never will be. Who generally takes on the LG and C leaving the RDE with the one on one matchup? That’s the NT and many times they line up over center.
You talk about fukkin film? Go watch entirety of game again and you will see many times that this was going on.
My own father is an oline coach….go up and watch Bishop Montgomery….yeah in LA….go see them this fall. He would laugh at this BS

I am so sick of the run defense problems that I my keyboard is “hoarse” from shouting about it.
If you can’t stop the run…you can’t win
I think if Henderson plays and McClain steps up…they should be able to stop the run

Pryor Likely Stuck In Dead End With Raiders
_____________________________________________________
While discussing the strengths and weaknesses of quarterbacks Ryan Mallett(notes) and Terrelle Pryor over the weekend, one NFL general manager came to this conclusion: “Yeah, when you look at it overall, they’re pretty equal.”
That was proven correctly on Monday when Pryor was picked in the third round of the NFL’s supplemental draft. Pryor went to the Oakland Raiders with the 82nd overall pick, not far behind where Mallett went in April, when he was the 74th overall pick by the New England Patriots. Sadly for Pryor, his chances of long-term success aren’t close to Mallett’s now.
Pryor needs discipline after dashing from NCAA investigators to the NFL. He needs an organization that is just that – organized. Instead, Pryor has landed on a team where the self-absorbed get thrown into a big bucket with a brine of willfulness and a hint of ego glorification.
If you talk to a handful of people from Ohio State and NFL personnel who have done a modicum of homework on Pryor, they will tell you that Pryor’s biggest problem is he has never been told no. Former Ohio State coach Jim Tressel consistently let Pryor do whatever he wanted. In the end, it cost Pryor his final season in college (a season he could have used for development of his immense skills) and Tressel his job.
Now he goes to an organization that develops quarterbacks the way Nevin Shapiro and Bernie Madoff handle investments. Name the last quarterback the Raiders really nurtured?
Ken Stabler.
Since then, the Raiders have either succeeded with retreads like Jim Plunkett or Rich Gannon or flopped with guys like Marc Wilson, Todd Marinovich or, most recently, JaMarcus Russell(notes).
The situation with Russell is most instructive in this situation. Owner Al Davis picked Russell, seeing him as the second-coming of Plunkett from an athletic perspective. Davis then let Russell run wild over coaches Lane Kiffin and Tom Cable. Those coaches tried to discipline Russell from time to time, but Davis either waived the fines or didn’t do anything until it was way too late.
Now comes Pryor, who should have been a first-round pick. The fact that some thought he should have gone in the fifth or sixth round was an overreaction to his selfishness. There just aren’t that many human beings who can do what Pryor can do. When you have a chance to get them, you draft them.
But you better have a plan for them, too.
That’s what the Patriots will do with Mallett. On the first week of training camp, New England coach Bill Belichick was in the middle working with all the quarterbacks, even Mallett. That’s not because Belichick is getting ready to replace Tom Brady(notes) tomorrow. (People close to Belichick think Mallett will never play a meaningful down for the Patriots.)
“I know Bill took that kid just because he knows he can turn him into something more later on,” another general manager said. “All the concerns about that kid’s attitude … he won’t be there long enough for that to have an impact on the locker room. Bill will get him ready, put him on display in some exhibition games and then trade him away for a first-round pick or something like that.”
In the meantime, Mallett will hopefully benefit from just being around guys like Belichick and Brady. Perhaps something about their seriousness will rub off on him. Mallett needs it a lot more than people close to him are willing to admit. Aside from the sordid tales of him from college, the latest story about him was the all-night partying he did at the NFL Players Association rookie symposium in Sarasota, Fla., in July, according to two sources.
There’s nothing wrong with a 20-something doing a little partying. However, when that’s a black mark on your reputation and you’re now trying to make it in the NFL, you’d think one would change that a little. Now that Mallett is with the Patriots, he will either learn or get kicked to the curb.
With Pryor, he may never get that message. He may never be told that his routine is played out and that it’s time to work on his game instead of get by on talent. He will likely never look at fellow quarterback Jason Campbell(notes) and think he can learn anything from him. At Ohio State, he didn’t listen to older players, in large part because Tressel never told him he had to.
Oakland coach Hue Jackson will talk a good game about disciplining Pryor. Jackson will tell people “I’ll put my foot up his butt if I have to” (or at least some statement like that). The problem is that Jackson is just another Raiders coach, as disposable as Cable, Kiffin, Art Shell, Norv Turner, Jon Gruden and all the other guys Davis has run through there.
Whatever plan Jackson has is doubtful to last long and that means the only planning will be left to Davis, who is too old and too weary to carry it through himself. That’s why it’s more appropriate than ever that Davis takes another speed merchant (Pryor ran between a 4.36 and 4.42 40 on Sunday in his workout for NFL scouts).
The 82-year-old Davis is trying to beat the clock. There’s no time for plans.
That means there’s probably no shot for Pryor.

I am not In panic mode however, giving up 239 yards even in preseason is disconcerting…

Or how running plays to the edge are supposed to be stopped by the DTs?

Ryan Mallett is the tallest Q in the last draft, with a rocket arm. He was a big time performer, very inconsistent. Not at all mobile. Lots of character issues. He is a good fit in New England where maybe Brady can show him the ropes. But if the issue is very young NFL Q’s running around partying, this is news?

I doubt very much that Mr. Davis would really take note of HueJac or anybody else would say about getting Pryor. He’s is set on trying to get a qb that is able to run from pressure.
Pryor did set a record for QSU qbs for throwing 16 straight completions, although it was last year against Ohio, in a rout.
If anybody can help him develop as a decent nfl passer is probably Al Saunders, if that happens Pryor could be around for awhile.
And hopefully, he learns to make better decisions with the ball than our previous qbs after Gannon. I am just dreaming of getting somewhere better than what the Raiders have in Campbell, Boller, and Edwards, nothing.

1st team defense will be solid;
Mr. Seymour & Mr. Kelley on the inside with Mr, Henderson & Mr. Bryant as baxkups makes the Raiders the deepest team in the DT position and arguably the best.

Nice post, KK. It’s a refutation of all the gullible Davis acolytes on here who blame the players and coaches for 20 years of futility. The point of the piece, which has been proven time and again, is Davis creates a culture that undermines the growth of talent rather than develop it in a strategic way. The entire organization takes on the eccentric idiosyncrasies of the Old Creeper. Jackson is just a front.
August 22nd, 2011 at 7:49 pm
Pryor on MNF interview talking alot about his willingness to do whatever “Mr. Davis and Coach Jackson want me to do”.

Gruden just said “you know Terrelle I spent four years in Oakland, but don’t tell Mr. Davis you talked to me…oh, we’re on tv, ok, but Terrelle i just wanna say i’m so happy for ya and i wish you the best of luck”.
Funny exchange.

B&uce is spot on with his focus.
No more excuses about this that and the other. Its to the point where its put up or shut up when it comes to run defense. This has been going on too long and it is distressing that last weeks game looked a lot like previous years.
The DEs need to hold the edge, the doggone DTs can’t let Guards and FullBacks go unimpeded to the LBs…and the Lbs have to run clean, read and diagnose and make the doggone tackle.
No excuses on this. They don’t have to be a top 10 run defense but mann…bottom of the league every year…something wrong with that
August 22nd, 2011 at 7:52 pm
Because of the image Raider fans have, Niner fans have carte blanche to start trouble. They’ll never get blamed. They’re the prom queen of sports fans. They can start a huge fight, nobody will ever blame them. The other side of the same coin is, all of that chest thumping that Raider fans like to do, bragging on being tough, fans like Brien telling people to come to the game and face physical violence, perpetuates the stereotype as well. Make no mistake. People like Brien are to blame for not only the madness at the game Saturday, but the ensuing, biased reporting as well.
August 22nd, 2011 at 7:52 pm

If there is a hole in our D-line it’s through Kelly’s lane. He’s trying so hard to get to the QB that he plays himself out of position. How do we change that? Change Kelly for Bryant? let Kelly backfill for Seymour when he gets tired. JHenderson can then backfill for Bryant. Opinions?

So has the Templet been made on how to beat the Raiders? Punch them in the mouth over and over, and they will kill their selves?

Ala Marty Schottenheimer? Yes. Hue has promised it ain’t like that anymore.
He stood up before the “Raider Nation” and said “We’re back!” I was pumped when I heard that cuz I wanna believe Hue is the man to help make it happen and that he says this from a knowingness and not just bluster and trying to make us feel good.
Win games. Dominate. Be a bully. THAT will make me feel good about this.
Sat. night showed NO EVIDENCE WHATSOEVER that this team will anything but a horrible team this year.
It’s just preseason..i know that, but i’d really like to see something with my own eyes that suggests this team is any good.

Sullivan44,
Not sure if your trolling or not. The Run Defense here has been completely unacceptable.
If you can’t see that…then there is nothing I can say to convince you

When it comes to the draft, Mike Holgrem himself said every GM/Head Coach decieve the press, the fans, and especially the other GMs.
Same goes for the supplemental draft.

In the 3-4 with this D, TK is supposed to be a key guy in stopping the run. He had 7 sacks last year, but his main concern should be to contain IF there is a run play, and brush off and pressure when there is not. This might lend itself to play action to work against him and buy more time, in essence “fooling” Kelly into committing to the run and taking away his pas rushing ability. IMO.

RR…286: Good point. We pretended to show no interest, at least verbally, but we were up there to see the work out and that finalized it for Al. And, we can critize Al in some areas, but we have to give him credit when he wants something he’ll go get it. He was willing to pay with a number 3 pick and bingo, we got Pryor. Absolutely fabulous. What he did at Ohio wasn’t easy and I assume (not sure) that no one has put those numbers up in 3 years. If any of those abilities transfer over to the speed of the NFL…WOW.

Terrelle Pryor told ESPN’s “Monday Night Football” announce team that he’d appeal the five-game suspension if the Raiders decide that’s the best course of action to take.

Jackson just said..
Raiders picked Pryor to be qb… Campbell free agent at end of season
August 22nd, 2011 at 8:24 pm
I like the fact that the Raiders are taking the lead on the appeal.
At the very least it should get it down to 2-3 games
August 22nd, 2011 at 8:26 pm
It might take Mr. Pryor a couple of years to be ready to be the #1 guy.
Mr. Jason Campbell will produce this season and earn another contract.
August 22nd, 2011 at 8:27 pm
So far I like this guys attitude. ..he’s itching to get started. . Very different than jablubber
August 22nd, 2011 at 8:27 pm
Let Pryor sit the 5 games – he’s not going to be playing anyway and that way we keep another player on the roster for a longer look. I believe he’ll still be able to practice and that’s more important right now. If he is destined for the QB position sometime in the distant future he should just start throwing now and not stop until he gets it right. PRACTICE, Practice, practice. Learn the offense and do your studying. Work hard. Listen and don’t speak.
August 22nd, 2011 at 8:28 pm
Two biggest weaknesses I see are WLB (and overall LB depth) & either CB or TE depending on severity of injuries to Mr. Johnson or Mr. Boss.
the Raiders pull the trigger on signing Tatupu & Mr. Morrison.
August 22nd, 2011 at 8:29 pm
No problem with work ethic… character was the issue. . Not his work out mentality. .. the Guy is ripped. .obviously
August 22nd, 2011 at 8:33 pm
I do not think Campbell is a good QB, but he may be a good option to keep while Pryor learns. Unless a Above avarage QB drops in our lap. It could be worse. We could have garbagkakski.

Good God, where’ve you been the past 30 years? Everyone knows Davis meddles. Are you still wet behind the ears, kid?
===============================================
+++++++++++
OhioRaider,
1. First of all KK pulled the post from the article written by jason cole of yahoo sports.
2. I do not consider myself a Davis Acoylyte. You can go back and look at my post. I have bashed Mr. Davis for some of the business decisions that have been made regarding the org so you are definetly wrong here.
3. If you want to know where I have been the last 30 years thats a long story however, I am of the age and stature not to be called a “kid” by you or anyone else on the blog. A kid is a young goat, dont think I qualify for that. Grew up watching the RAIDERS from 1970 onward and to this day I am still a RAIDER…
4. I am of the belief that Mr. Davis is not intervening with the coaching staff, do i have ant intel to support or refute i would say no however, i do see a cultral shift, and it is positive.
If you want to be negative its up to you. If you are ever in SD let me know we can go somewhere and have a drink, and talk NATION….

I don’t like the thought of drafting Pryor BECUZ JC is gonna be a FA next year. If JC is not the type of guy u think of as the long term solution than why the heck is he starting in the first place? Media is spinning it like that.
I want a Raider QB who is in the long term plans, not a guy you start even tho you already know he won’t be here next year cuz he’s not good enough. What. Is this just a blowoff year to waste until we get a QB we can really win with?
August 22nd, 2011 at 9:31 pm
If Soup is concern about a long-term relationship with the Raiders and holding onto the starting QB position, all he needs to do is win. Winning solves most of all the concerns.
