Pryor is a Raider

The Raiders selected Ohio State quarterback Terrelle Pryor in the third round of the NFL supplemental draft Monday, rolling the dice on a major talent whose NCAA violations helped lead to the dismissal of coach Jim Tressel and put the school on probation.

The selection of Pryor means the Raiders will lose their third-round pick in the 2012 draft.

Pryor decided to forgo his senior year at Ohio State after Tressel’s resignation. Pryor was suspended for the first five games of the 2011 season by the NCAA for receiving cash for tattoos from a Columbus tattoo-parlor owner.

The NFL ruled Pryor eligible for the supplemental draft, but essentially upheld the NCAA suspension. Pryor will not be placed on the Raiders’ 53-man roster until Week 6.

The Raiders were one of a reported 17 teams at a Pro Day workout for Pryor Saturday, and clocked him at 4.41 for the 40-yard dash _ essentially makes him the NFL’s fastest quarterback with the possible exception of Michael Vick.

The question is whether the Raiders see Pryor as a quarterback or as a receiver. At 6-foot-6 and 240 pounds, Pryor could present matchup problems as a slot receiver or could be a tight end prospect along the lines of Antonio Gates, who is more receiver than blocker.

One of the most decorated athletes in high school out of Jeanette High in southwestern Pennsylvania, Pryor was a basketball star who originally committed to Pittsburgh.

The object of an intense recruiting battle, Pryor’s decision to sign with Ohio State over Penn State was national news.

Considered more of a developmental project as a quarterback, Pryor was 31-4 as a starter at Ohio State including MVP awards in the Rose Bowl in as a junior and Sugar Bowl as a senior.

As a junior, Pryor passed for 2,772 yards, 27 touchdowns and had 11 interceptions. He rushed for 754 and yards and four scores.

Having written in a column two months ago taking Pryor was a no-brainer (although the third round is higher than I expected), I’m obviously on board with this call.

DHB may have 60 catches;800-1000 yards, but no way will he get 7 TDs.Not with a QB who admits he saw a wide open TE in the end zone and refused to throw him the ball.

The run defense is still a huge problem. Tommy kelly continues to over run his gap, and the outside backers were hard to find. I am still of the opinion that groves is not good enough to start, yet I dont see who you play over him in that spot on our roster.

No need to panic just yet. The defense stiffened up insde the 20 and didnt give up a td. Most of the damage was done to our back ups and scrubs. Im not sure what our starters would have done in a full game. the run defense seemed shaky this week, and good last week. because of the sample size we just dont know how good or bad it is.

Developing Pryor @ QB is going to be a HUGE bust… He should be developed as a WR… period.. he could be a nightmare matchup…

Anybody who says that you don’t draft a QB in the 3rd to play WR doesn’t know what they are talking about. Sure, Legedu Nanee was drafted in the 5th round to play WR…. But Bert Emanuel was drafted in the SECOND round to play WR

Lol not to be a jack ass but I called us selecting Pryor in the third months ago. Knowing that we will get a comp pick for Asomugha that will likely be a third rounder and Al Davis expecting us to improve enough that our own 3rd rounder would be a late one I fully expected this to happen. His impressive workout solidified it.

Broncos make it official: Kyle Orton is the starting quarterback

    Posted by Gregg Rosenthal (PFT)

Coach John Fox made official what had been apparent since early in Broncos camp: Kyle Orton is his starting quarterback.

Orton was announced as the Week One starter by Fox on Monday, per the Denver Post. Fox would not declare a backup quarterback, with the Brady Quinn-Tim Tebow battle still ongoing. Quinn looks like the slight favorite.

Had Pryor played this season with no problems at Ohio state. .. And Jim tressel was still there… Pryor would have been top 15… for sure in the first round. .

You’re gonna hear alot of “the haters” say otherwise but what you say is absolutely true.

Basically, we got a first round , top prospect QB for basically nothing but a 3rd round pick that we could afford to “waste” anyway, given the comp picks we have coming.

This is a coup, and I’m not even a huge Pryor fan.

You sound like a whiner fan.

Am I saying that Hue had no say in this move whatsoever?
No, I didn’t actually say that.
We all know that Al Davis always does what his coaches want. (sarcasm)

I did read a couple of rumors about Jackson and Al disagreeing on this but it was just on places like prosportsdaily and I have no reason to believe them.
I don’t know whether Jackson likes it or not but I’m fairly confident that he will come out and say that he does.

Sorry if I hurt your feelings.

    ====================================

No. You HAVE TO HAVE a franchise Q to win in this league. HAVE TO. Teams that think they are going to win with Rex Grossman or Tyler Thigpen are huffing glue. Pryor has prototype size and speed for an NFL Q. He has also had a good collegiate career. What’s the down side to him? He played poorly against better competition which is never a good sign. (Rose Bowl MVP aside). Once again, this is a raw project pick, but then again, we have QB guru Hue Jackson as his head and QB coach. Hue did a very very good job developing Joe Flacco who has similar size to Pryor but came in with a resume against much weaker competition than Pryor. Was it worth a 3rd rounder to try to get a franchise Q? Absolutely. Both Mike Brown and Randy Lerner proved they are too cheap. Again.

  • SaintKaufman

    RRS

Pipe down man you sound crazy. Anyone that passes judgment on this team based on a preseason performance, either good or bad, is getting way ahead of themselves. RRS talks as if Hue is the guy playing on the field. Over the last 5 years the colts have won less than ten pre season games, these games shouldn’t even be televised because some of you guys get way too riled up lol. I remember when Shell II went undefeated in the preseason and everyone, even Schefter, was writing about how Art Shell and the raiders are back….yeah back to the stone ages

  • RaiderRockstar

Green Bay OLB’s Frank Zombo & Brad Jones are both injured, leaving Erik Walden as the clear starter opposite Clay Matthews.

Trade Q Groves to GB for a 5th rounder?

    Severe,

Please don’t compare Oakland to Indy in any way, shape or form. The Raiders are a young team that needs the practice. Jackson is full of crap. He makes promises that he can’t deliver. I see no difference from him and Cable. As a play caller? Sure. HC? about even

Jc made some very nice throws down the field, when he had time to stand in the pocket.
    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Actually Mistic1, he did make some nice throws, you’re right.
The problem though is the second part of your point.
The guy tends to panic under a rush as he did last year when he went down two yards from a first down.
But he did make some nice throws.
