Pryor-Russell comparisons are laughable

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Monday, August 22nd, 2011 at 1:20 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Pinch-hitting for Steve Corkran today . . .

Dick Vitale said on his Twitter account the Raiders are hoping quarterback Terrelle Pryor isn’t another JaMarcus Russell.

He’s not the only one. I’ve heard it dozens of times since I wrote two months ago the Raiders should consider Pryor, an idea that became a reality Monday when Oakland forfeited its third-round pick in the 2012 draft to take the Ohio State quarterback.

Well, they’re both pretty big for quarterbacks and they do have the same skin color.

The comparisons end there.

Russell was cut after making $39 million, making it a disaster when he became a washout. Pryor, according to John Clayton’s calculations, will get around $591,000 guaranteed as the No. 18 pick in the third round, the way contracts are slotted.

Russell played 25 games as a college quarterback, going 21-4 an builidng his reputation with a Sugar Bowl MVP performance against an overmatched Notre Dame team. Pryor was 31-4, winning both the Rose Bowl and Sugar Bowl MVPs against more competitive opponents in Oregon and Arkansas.

Russell came in as a fabulous arm attached to a soft body and a questionable work ethic. Pryor’s passing game is said to be in need of work, but he’s a fabulous physical specimen whose propnensity for work has not been questioned.

Russell could play no other position but quarterback, unless the Raiders secretly toyed with the idea of lining him up inside with Tommy Kelly once his weight approached 300 pounds. Pryor could be either a wide receiver or a pass receiving tight end if it doesn’t work out at quarterback.

Is it possible Pryor doesn’t have what it takes to be an NFL quarterback? Absolutely, that’s the nature of the position. Happens all the time. But there are fallback options if it doesn’t as a playmaking receiver and the economic reality is his contract won’t be the elephant in the room as it was with Russell.

You sound like a whiner fan.

Am I saying that Hue had no say in this move whatsoever?
No, I didn’t actually say that.
We all know that Al Davis always does what his coaches want. (sarcasm)

I did read a couple of rumors about Jackson and Al disagreeing on this but it was just on places like prosportsdaily and I have no reason to believe them.
I don’t know whether Jackson likes it or not but I’m fairly confident that he will come out and say that he does.

Sorry if I hurt your feelings.

  24. MistaBrown Says:

So Pryor will either bump Boller, Edwards, N Miller the IR killer, or Ausberry?

  25. GForce21 Says:

USATODAY and a couple other news sites are saying he was drafted to play receiver. I want to see him get a shot at QB.

We have a lot of experienced QB coaches to set on him. I have always thought he was better than Kaepernick and that dude went in round 2. Remember that Jake Locker, who is horribly inaccurate (52ish completion percentage during his time at Washington – bleh) through college and at the combine was drafted what, 8 or 10 overall?

We got Pryor for a 3rd rounder, I am okay with that.

  26. Thec07 Says:

our passing game was horrible last year and could be explosive this year with the emergence of DHB Moore and the others back from injury add in the running game. The concern is the continual inability to stop the run. We have the dline and the big lbs which were supposed to be a liabiliy in the pass game at the expense of stopping the run but at this point doubtful we’ll do either

  43. Plunketthead Says:

Keep Pryor, Edwards, and Boller.

  65. CanuckRaider Says:

Very interesting indeed. Don’t like losing next years 3rd rounder but Pryor probably wouldn’t have lasted till the 5th. Besides…We can use our compensatory picks to get back into the 3rd. Give him a shot at QB and if it doesn’t work out WR or TE. Maybe he’ll become a more dangerous version of Brad Smith. Word is the Patsies were interested and might have scooped him before we picked in the 5th. Nice to scoop them if that’s the case.

I was out camping this weekend. Finally watched the Niner game last nite on the DVR. I didnt think the game was as bad as everyone made it out to be. The score was 0-3 when the starters were pulled out.

our passing game was horrible last year and could be explosive this year with the emergence of DHB Moore and the others back from injury add in the running game. The concern is the continual inability to stop the run. We have the dline and the big lbs which were supposed to be a liabiliy in the pass game at the expense of stopping the run but at this point doubtful we’ll do either

    ==============

Granted thats true, but lets not act like the Niners with Gore is a slouch on running the ball. Most of the SF OL is top draft picks.

The Raiders DL was in the backfield they were just vershooting the plays. Also SF played their first team for the entire first half.

If anything I think that that game showed that we are not as deep as we thought. Thats why Hue is not trying to play the starters that much during preseason. There isnt much beyond the starters.

This kid was the no. 1 rated HS player in the country. He was being recruited by his hometown Penn State, and Meeeshigan, with their new coach Rich Rod and his shotgun, spread offense. Pryor coulda went there because that college offense fit his skillset so well. he woulda put up huge numbers.

Instead he came to Columbus to play in a more traditional, Pro style offense. He was 31-4 and MVP of the Rose Bowl. However, he always seemed a lil frustrating to me. Maybe because the expectations were so high.

He was capable of making some absolutely jaw-dropping highlight reel type plays. And then turn around a make a real head scratcher. He’s young and very talented. Still inconsistant, maybe.

He might not throw absolute lazers like Vick, but he’s got enough arm, and is a similar athlete. He doesn’t run with as much power as Cam Newton, but I’d say he is very comparable with the no. 1 overall pick in the draft. And the Raiders got him for a 3rd rd pick.

When you have the same problems year in and year out (can’t stop the run, lots of penalties, QB protection issues) and you then do little to nothing to correct said issues in the offseason, and then those issues pop up in the preseason, it is certainly cause for concern.

Several factors make Pryor an intriguing choice for Raiders

    By Len Pasquarelli
    The Sports Xchange/CBSSports.com
    Aug. 22, 2011
Even with their shoddy record for selecting players the past several years, principally a speed-based approach that has produced mostly crap-shoot results, the Oakland Raiders’ gamble in choosing former Ohio State quarterback Terrelle Pryor in the third round of Monday’s supplemental draft might have been one that was worth taking.

The choice of Pryor, in which the Raiders will forfeit their third-round choice in the 2012 draft, leaves Oakland for now with no selections in the second, third, or fourth rounds next year. But it at least provides the Raiders with the promise of securing the rights to a player who might help in the future.

Given the dubious results of the team’s recent drafts, that’s a rarity.

Pryor might never take a snap at quarterback for the Raiders, who, in the typical Al Davis obsessed-with-speed fashion, plan to first audition the former Buckeyes star as a wide receiver. But know this, too: Right now, Oakland, which exercised its first-ever supplemental pick Monday, doesn’t have a single veteran quarterback on the roster under contract beyond this season.

Starter Jason Campbell and backups Trent Edwards and Kyle Boller are all working on one-year deals.

And there is this: As noted by The Sports Xchange earlier Monday, citing the example of Buffalo Bills do-it-all veteran Brad Smith, more franchises are likely to seek versatile players who can fill multiple roles. And fewer teams probably will dress three quarterbacks in 2011. In the past two seasons, there have been only 13 occasions in which a team used all three quarterbacks in a game, and just seven in which three quarterbacks attempted a pass.

No matter where the Raiders stick Pryor in camp, the fact remains that he has played quarterback at a high level. At 6-feet-5, 232 pounds, and with a 40-yard time of 4.44 seconds — that was the clocking on a Raiders scouts’ watch, as opposed to the 4.41 widely reported (still pretty fast) — Pryor can be a fourth or fifth wide receiver, an H-back, perhaps even a flexed tight end in some situations.

He doesn’t necessarily have to specialize anymore to be at least borderline special for an Oakland team always fascinated by physical tools. With everything Pryor has been through the past two months, the likelihood is he’ll arrive in Oakland with a chip on his shoulder, a guy willing to work hard to prove the skeptics wrong. That figures to be an added benefit.

For the price — likely a signing bonus somewhere between $586,000 and $591,000 and a four-year contract with minimum salaries — the move to choose Pryor looks at first blush to be a solid one for the Oakland organization.

    =================

Low risk throw away pick since they have extra coming next year. i dont think he can be a wr in the nfl. He doesnt have the wiggle or shiftiness, or the quickness in short space. He would be matt jones only faster.

He could be a solid back up qb one day possibly. I dont think he has the goods when it comes to decision making or accuracy, when it comes to being a starting caliber qb

  212. raideredoutL.A. Says:

    Pasquarelli isn’t with espn anymore?

  213. Scottish Raider Says:

I like the Pryor pick. He has more upside than any QB taken in the 3rd for at least 5 years. No, he isn’t a polished, practiced, preened QB. No, he isn’t ready to start this season or possibly even next. But, given time and good coaching, he could be very special.

I am hacked off with the NFL pundits (Todd McShay, etc.) who can’t utter a sentence about the Raiders without including the word ‘reach’. I suggest they go and look down the list of this years 3rd round picks. How many of those guys are less of a ‘reach’ than Pryor? Answer = few, if any. And that includes Mallet.

Pryor is a project but he is a low risk, low cost, high reward project. And he is also a kid who keeps proving people wrong. For some reason, so many people have a downer on Pryor – I just think he might turn out to be very special.

  214. inonewordraider Says:

if we win ppl will recognize the quality moves Al has made recently. stop the run=playoffs

  215. Dakota Says:

A good franchise would assign a value on a player and if the team did not have a pick in the round where the player should be slotted, then they would pass on the player instead of reaching for that player.

This move follows Al’s tendency to over pay or over value certain players. I am not surprised in the least.

Plus, I believe, there are time limits where if a player chooses to change their number they have to pay the NFL for all of the merchandise that has been run with their original number unless they get the request in on time. Not sure if that limit is up this year already or not.

Boller’s stock already plummeted with the Mrs. when he landed on the Raiders. She’s embarrassed enough by him being a perennial 3rd stringer. But on a bad team, to boot? No doubt she’s faced some ridicule with her SD diva housewife circle over that. Most of them are probably banging Chargers’ starters.

i wouldnt worry too much about not having many picks in next years draft ,al davis has some experience picking up free agents (some good some not so good )but i would say over the last 50 years no team has picked up more free agents than the raiders that worked out good.also with few draft picks there will be more cap room .also most rookies take a few years to help ,but free agents can step in right away usually .our team is real young right now ,in 2012 add some veteran free agents with our up an coming youth …its all in the game plan just watch youll see
