Raiders sign two-time Pro Bowl cornerback Lito Sheppard

By Jon Becker
Friday, August 26th, 2011 at 10:13 am in Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders just announced that they’ve signed former Philadelphia Eagles, New York Jets and Minnesota Vikings cornerback Lito Sheppard to a free-agent contract.
Here’s the short story we’ve just posted online. Jerry will update this with more details and reaction from Napa.

NAPA — The Raiders announced the free-agent signing of two-time Pro Bowl cornerback Lito Sheppard Friday morning.
Sheppard, a 30-year-old former first-round pick of Philadelphia, is expected to be at Raiders practice in Napa Friday. He spent the 2010 season with the Minnesota Vikings and was an unrestricted free agent.
Sheppard should provide some stability to the Raiders’ cornerback corps. Projected starter Chris Johnson recently underwent an undisclosed surgery but the Raiders say he should be ready for the opener at Denver. Rookie DeMarcus Van Dyke has missed the last two practices with an undisclosed injury.

Brian the Genital, it’s pretty funny how irritated and worked up you get when I get props.

I know your mom said you had the build of an NFL corner or WR instead of a chick to make you feel better, but that’s no reason to be so sensitive and insecure.

Yeah, but if Wimbley and Scott are on the field at the same time, who was MM34 in for?

    Scott Kelly Seymour Wimbley

    McClain MM34

    CJ37 Routt Huff Branch

    ????

Are Houston and ShoNasty really going to come off the field on 3rd downs this year???

Those 2 guys are and should be ever down players.

You only got 10 guys listed there J-Hill.

    Gotta have:

    Scott Seymour Henderson Shonasty

    MM34 McClain Wimbley

    Cj37 Routt Huff Branch

    Let MM34 cover the TE.

  6. Dakota Says:

Better than depending on the young guys in this critical year.

  7. HairyBush Says:

    Lito!

  8. RaiderRockstar Says:

What bugs me about Groves, Scott, and Moss as WLB options is that they’re all natural defensive ends playing out of position. So’s Wimbley over on the strongside for that matter, but he showed he can handle that pretty well. None of the other 3 have. Can we have more than one natural linebacker starting as such please? Apparently not.

I like it. Teams making the right moves to be a serious contender. Cant wait to see them in action on Sunday!

  10. daraider09 Says:

The next Duane Starks? Hopefully this guy can at least make the team. We need some depth at corner. I am really worried about the corners. I think Routt is more than adequate, unlike most everyone else. I think the problem is with the rest of the corners, outside of Chris Johnson, who is ok when he plays man to man. Anything else he is asked to do, he is pretty lost. The young guys have shown me nothing so far. Very frustrating. This will help if Sheppard has anything left. Not great, but an decent pickup.

I think the team might be avoiding signing any higher profile free agents (tatupu) because of the “net loss” issue with the compensatory draft picks next year. Maybe they dont want to screw that up considering the best they can get is 2 late 3rd rounders from what I understand. That would be nice, considering the lack of 2nd-4th round picks next draft. We might not see any more substantial signings barring injury…

  11. RaiderRoman Says:

Question….if this is a good signing then y wasn’t he picked up by someone else. What is the story there? I do agree we need more CB help!

  23. RaiderRetribution Says:

We have to consider the probability that at least one of the young CBs is not quite getting it.

Raiders having 4 young cornerbacks, two rookies and two 2nd year players is way to much inexperience for the cornerback position, especially with man to man coverage & the fact we had no OTA’s, etc…

We needed Mr. Lito Sheppard, I did not realize he was still available.

I wouldn’t give up on Mr. McFadden, simply put him on the practice squad, last years training camp he proved he has it, might just need a full set of OTAs and traing camp.

  33. Davy Jones Says:

From a news story last Wendesday about the NYG having Brian Williams and Lito Sheppard in for a tryout: “The fact both players are here is an indication they’re willing to sign for the veteran minimum — as was Sheppard’s agent saying in an e-mail to all 32 teams his client would play for such a deal.”

    http://www.nj.com/giants/index.ssf/2011/08/giants_work_out_veteran_corner_1.html

So hopefully the signing was indeed for the vet minimum. Sheppard has bounced around to a few teams the last few years, so if it much more than that it is a mistake.

With the new rookie wage scale, you can get a kings ransom for early first rounders since teams no longer have to worry about 80 million dollar busts. We could potentially trade our #1 for 4 picks next year. I would be happy with that

  49. guest123 Says:

Lito used to be a decent player. I remember him enforcing like missle mike. Now, he’s a body. But he does bring some experience. It’ll be interesting if he gets any PT against Drew Brees this weekend.

The bigger issue is Al has to pull the trigger on Lofa soon. We can’t go into the season with Q. Groves starting. The first 2 games are winnable, but we can’t play them with one arm tied behind us either.

It was much easier to dislike the Donkeys when crybaby Josh was there, but now that ol’ Horse Teeth is back and all the fans are pumping up Tebow as the second coming of Jesus, it’s becoming easier again. Plus, I keep seeing the replays of the Broncos’ 1998 season when the owner tearfully cries out “This one’s for John!” Bring on the Orange Crush — crush ‘em!!!!!

I feel you. I hate them all, but Denver the most. Their fans p;ss me off.

I have the most respect for KC, as they have the slight edge in our long rivalry.

I hate SD cause for the last 6 years or so, seems like most everybody has them going places and they get talked up a lot and never deliver.

Prior to that, I thought of them much the same as I did of Seattle (I’d like a win but don’t neccecarily want their team bus to flip over and land in a ditch filled with sh;t from an overflowed septic tank).

  95. SilverNBlackPA Says:

Sheppard signing brought the Raiders to 91 guys on the roster. Paul Guiterrez just reported on Twitter that they cut La Secla and waived/injured Pelc. That brings the roster to 89….another signing coming? Or just gonna roll with 89 guys til 1st cutdown day?

S&BPA…what happened to Pelc? I remember talk on here that he will be a beast…anyways, back down to 89! Maybe a LB signing?

  99. guest123 Says:

I remember when the Seahags were in our division. We straight owned them and they served themselves up like lambs. Some of the best Bo Jackson highlights came against Seattle. But the Shawn Alexander era was a tough one in that era. Now I wish they were still in our division. The NFC West is a joke.

I was high on Pelc; thought he was really gonna be a sleeper. Apparently, not good enough to crack the roster. Oh well, I would’ve never invested a first-round pick and millions of dollars for his services.

    PA,

he does while he’s eligible to take part in team activities. Weeks 1-5 (when the final 53 is decided) he won’t count until WK6

    ********

On his chat, he said that the 3 QB’s are safe and that they could carry 4 when Pryor comes on in week 6. I think he doesn’t count so it’s like we are really carrying 54.

Nerds, I’m working on a few alterations to the PARTYBRO 8500 Mai Tai Maker for my massive Reggae Party / UFC Fight Cruise tomorrow.

When the Simply Red cover band starts jamming, it’s going to automatically spray fresh Mai Tai all over the crowd Javon Walker style. This is guaranteed to get the babes lubed up before I make my “entrance”, if you know what I mean.

Then hopefully my shrimp cocktail servant KrappyKell will be excited enough to do the Charleston right across the dance floor and into the Pacific Ocean.

That’s when I’ll start the Van Halen lazer light show.
