Saints-Raiders blacked out locally

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Saturday, August 27th, 2011 at 3:25 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Not sure where it began, but there seemed to be a lot of people who were under the impression the Saints-Raiders game would be televised live in its local market.

That is not the case. Regular-season rules apply to the preseason with regard to blackouts. The Raiders’ paid attendance against Arizona was 25,699 with far fewer than that in the stands. That figure is a rough approximation of their season ticket base, given that preseason games are included.

So the Raiders will be on television everywhere but their home market while getting the national television treatment on NBC with Al Michaels and Cris Collinsworth.

Tj, I like what Al did in getting Pryor. I hope that now he can create (which he seems to be doing) stability and keep the same coaches and just reload with the draft. I want to see everything in order and in place so that when Pryor does get the reigns, its all systems go.

Listen to me Al, lock Shaughnessy up NOW!! Fo not mess this up Raiders! Matt is the next bigtime D lineman home grown in Oakland! He is the future of our D line. Along with Houston!
    ====================================================
    yup.

Al has to start getting ahead of the curve with these young players and all players in general.

Can’t keep coming down to franchise tags, RFAs.

Try to keep your guys off the open market

  5. SnB offense defense specialteams Says:

Heads up to you guys living in the Bay Area.

You all better start going to these games or that team won’t be there very long.

    Serously!

  8. priesttj Says:

SnB what else is new he has a ways to go to master the position? that’s supposed to be telling me somethinng?? That is NO diferent than every QB that has ever come into the league he’s NO DIFFERENT!

  9. 89052RAIDER Says:

Pryor has some upside, but he will take time to develop. If the Raiders tank by mid season than Pryor will start at least a few games..I think he does play this year..I wonder if Al is up yet.

  10. EMRaiders Says:

I am looking forward to this game so I can see what Taiwan can do and to get a glimpse at Mcfadden. Also so that I can see what Lito can bring to the table, if he plays. I hope we get to see the starters at least into the half, it will be a good test to our first team D.

Should be a good game to watch if for nothing else, those players performance. I think we might go 1-3 or maybe even 0-4 in the preseason and then all of a sudden come out blazing on monday night.

Here is my guess record for this season:

    1 @ Den W
    2 @ Buf W
    3 vs. NYJ L
    4 vs. NE L
    5 @ Hou W
    6 vs. Cle W
    7 vs. KC W
    8 Bye Week
    9 vs. Den W
    10 @ SD L
    11 @ Min L
    12 vs. Chi L
    13 @ Mia W
    14 @ GB L
    15 vs. Det W
    16 @ KC W
    17 vs. SD W

10-6 and we beat SD in the last game to win the west, knocking them off the playoffs and us getting in.

    GO RAIDERS!!!

  11. 89052RAIDER Says:

Nobody pays to see a bad product so winning will stop the black outs..Who wants to go watch a team get blasted in back to back Sundays by the Jets and Dolphins, side from brown hole nun? Al must sleep through the first quarter of home games.

That is true. I guess I just don’t get excited about rookies in general.

More to the point, this team has to get the veterans on the team right now to play better and play to the expectations placed on them.

Rookies of all stripes are so hit and miss that I don’t expect much from them except for the truly elite college talents (which are few and far between at any position)

  13. raiderimmortal Says:

Win lose or tie raider till we die right.. Start attending the dam games raider nation!! If we want to keep the team in Oakland we need to improve the attendance or else it’s off to l.a.

  14. SnB offense defense specialteams Says:

I don’t live in Oakland or anywhere near it and am good for 1 or 2 gms there and a gm or two on the road.

You have to support the local team. It is a for-profit organization.

You keep pulling in 20 and 30K per game…you all are going to lose that team.

You need to sell-out or near sell-out that stadium this year.

  15. raiderimmortal Says:

I hear you on that post #14 I also live far away and manage to attend at least two games a year. If I lived close to Oakland I would love to go to every game. Wish the fans could start supporting the team better.

That is the sam eproblem that is indiginous to most white people when they see an athletic blac QB. They don’t see QB they see athlete and that is where it stops………..yeah he’s a great athlete they’re all great athletes but they can’t think……..it’s an age old stereotype. That is why when white people see Vick play they see all athlete and ignore everything else that he doesbecause they’re soo focused on his athleticism they forget he just passed for 300 yards and 3 TD’s. All because he ran for 75 yards and a TD.

I heard this stuff for 40 years and it never stops whenever i talk abouyt an athletic black QB all I get is he’s an athlete as if it’s a sin to be an athlete and a QB…………..it’s the most insane thing I’ve ever heard yet it’s widely accepted as NORMAL and CORRECT.
    ————
Why are you so obsessed with race? You seem to be the one with a race problem. Your evaluation of Vick is laughable. The only logical explanation that you think Vick is better than Elway is that you have a major racial bias when it comes to evaluating talent. You probably thought OJ was innocent too.

  17. priesttj Says:

You probably thought Hitler had a good side…

  18. priesttj Says:

The Moron is you you obviously looked pass all that because you fell in love with his image. Elway had detractors amongst NFL people whether you know that or not. His own coach Dan Reeves would often discipline the wya he played using his arm instead of his offense. He was a great QB by all standards but if you talk to guys like Bill Walsh they’ll tell you he took a long time before he actually could read defenses instead of forcing throws with his arm.

The top of the heap at that time was Marino and Montana who excelled at reading defenses and using their offenses to beat you something Elway didn’t learn for an extended period of time.

The same is true with Vick Andy Reid had to teach him how to play the game. Well Mike Shananhan had to do the same with Elway.

    Those are facts……period

  32. r8dercain Says:

I agree with the T Pryor pick but we must get jcamp under contract for at least one mire season. Let this kid mature. Maybe two seasons. Ala Aaron Rodgers an Tom Brady
sit bhind Campbell learn master the playbook. Oh an most importantly keep the same coaching staff an system. That’s the biggest killer for a young QB
changing system after system can really f’k a guy up.

All in all with that said. T pryor is gonna succeed at this level

You all in the Bay Area have to get over the fact the team has struggled mightily. If I lived there, I have season tix easily…no question…no question….regardless of the garbage that’s been trotted out there at times.

Now they have a competitive team….

You guys need to get to that stadium this year….

Al isn’t going to be the Owner/GM forever….and when he is not…and you have a pencil sharpened executive running the show….you are going to be in trouble.

  39. priesttj Says:

  40. SnB offense defense specialteams Says:

I do think that one think that hinders athletic QBs is the fact that their COACHES use their athleticism as a crutch at the expense of their passing development.

I can’t understand why these QBs would even bother going to a school with a coach that can’t develop NFL QBs or a coach that runs some spread B.S.

If I was advising a young QB in high school, I tell him to go to the school with coaching that will develop ones passing skills…not necessarily the school that you can win a national championship…

  41. supapimp Says:

  42. SnB offense defense specialteams Says:

An NFL franchise is EXREMELY valuable to a city.

There are about a dozen metropolitan areas in the USA and Canada that could probably draw 50K per game.

Priesttj, it is a bad rule on the blackouts period….however, there is no excuse for drawing 20K and 30K per game…at least as long as the team is mathematically alive.

The fans in the Bay Area have to just “get over it”
Unless they are indifferent to losing the team.

Trust me, even if Al’s son takes over…someone is going to be in his ear and say..

Hey Mark, here is what the team is worth in Oakland with 30k fans….and here is HOW MUCH MORE the team is worth in “Anytown USA” with a full house.

    Get with it folks

    —-

And this is really what it all comes down to. No matter what your athletic gifts are, if you can’t read, analyze, and make the right decisions at NFL speeds against the complex NFL defensive coverages and all that they do to disguise them, then you will not be a good NFL QB.

The issue with so many great athletes that come out of college and into the NFL is that they are under developed in their reading skills. Against the lesser defenses in college a QB can get away with athletic adjustments that don’t translate to the NFL. That can be with your arm like John Elway where he tried to literally throw the ball through defenders or with your feet like so many of the “athletic QB” profiles that have come and gone through the years. The reason that they come under developed in the cerebral part of the game is because they have outs when the going gets tough. Compared that to the pure pocket passers of the past and now (Lamonica, Marino, Fouts, Manning, etc) that had no choice but to rely on their abilities to read and adjust and you can see how those that can’t run themselves out of trouble don’t succeed without being a step ahead of the defense mentally.

That’s not to say that they can’t learn. Many once great scrambling QBs that lost their wheels have adjusted mentally: Stabler, Namath, McNair are all good examples. However, having the mental faculties that allow you to make those split second reads is a prerequisite to getting there. Of course, the ultimate weapon is the QB that has the mental ability and the development in combination with the super athletic skills that can make them standout NFL QBs. Steve Young, Fran Tarkenton and Randall Cunningham are examples of that magic mix.

The key is that there is a certain combination of well above average athletic skills and not quite enough mental skills that will allow you to succeed in college but not the NFL. When you get to the next level, the mental side gets tested and exposed if sub par.

Vick is possibly on path to be one that is learning the QB position well enough to possibly be in position as great. But as others have said, he has to do it a few years back to back. As he gets older and is less willing to take the abuse that comes with too much running, time will tell if he can continue to develop into a pure passing threat and can play the game deep enough into his 30’s to put up career numbers comparable to the other greats, such as Elway.

How about sticker shock reality: At the AZ game – 2 hot dogs, 2 beers, 2 cokes & 1 bag of crappy salted peanuts = $43.00 That’s ridiculous! Parking = $35 more craziness. They do have inexpensive tickets $27 that are located in the boondocks of the Colosseum. I’ve got excellent 30 YD line Club seats but they weren’t cheap = $151/ticket/game (I purchased 2 season tickets).

It’s not unreasonable to understand that Oakland’s unemployment rate (the highest in CA) and economic status of the general city citizen doesn’t do well with the costs of going to today’s NFL games.

I don’t have an answer but it’s the economy that’s really the main reason causing the shortfall of fans at the game.

  46. TerrapinRaider Says:

Its been a while but things are pointing in the right direction. I view the TP pickup as equivalent to the Farve-Rodgers situation.

Rodgers was always the air apparent but only after Farve moved on. Rodgers sat behind Farve for years until his time.

Campbell will get extended (barring some terrible injury or very bad performance) and likely for at least another 3-4 yrs.

Pryor is probably 2 years from being ready to play QB in the NFL.

  47. SnB offense defense specialteams Says:

    JB,

Economic conditions of the city are a challenge. No doubt…and they are a challenge in Detroit Michigan, Cleveland, Ohio and Pittsburgh PA to be sure.

Some Executive with an eye to the balance sheet is going to be running things…or at least advising on things when Al is no longer the GM.

He/she isn’t going to care about the unemployment rate.

    Just ask Buffalo.

  48. TerrapinRaider Says:

They sat Rodgers until they could sit him no longer

  49. SnB offense defense specialteams Says:

    Terrapin,

I just think a little caution is warranted with Pryor. Why did he “slip” to the 3rd round?

If he was projected as a franchise cornerstone QB…he’s going in the 1st round.

He has a lot of work to do….in my opinion….A LOT OF WORK TO DO.

I think its way too early to attach anything to the kid but the need for him to work hard and lead….

  50. J Hill Says:

However, it does not ecape me that Pryor is coming into a great siuation to be surronding by great coaching and no pressure at his age. Thta could turn a lot of things in a very positive direction. We all know he is not ready and needs development. Lets see where he ends up because for a change in this league he may actually get the oppty to develop.

Thats what is being reported we’re going to see vs N.O.

I don’t think this game is going to look good as far as our defense is concerned. CJ, DVD, McLain, Henderson …all have been injured/out of practice this week.

I’ll be more interested in the offense.

  87. Method To My Madness Says:

But tomorrow at this same time we matchup vs the Saints. Our secondary is about to be tested. Allowing Drees 3 and 4 seconds to look at the field and its curtains. I can see the dline getting a tad bit pressure but not alot. Hope Chuck B has some blitzes up his fat sleeve

  145. Zymurge Says:

It’s crazy early and everyone is talking about Pryor as only a QB based on the first few sentences out of his mouth. Don’t read too much into his being picked in the 3rd meaning that:
    - Jason Campbell needs to start looking over his shoulder
    - Hue won’t be able to get another QB in the draft because all will veto due to his man love for Pryor

Remember Antwaan Randle El? Pryor is eerily similar in my eyes. Considered a dominant weapon as a college QB, he got his shot to make the transition in the NFL at that position. When it became clear that he didn’t have what it takes to run an offense (which is a lot different than standing behind center and making throws) he was ultimately moved to WR where he had decent success.

Pryor is an absolute physical freak on paper. He has Randy Moss type attributes in terms of size/speed, so you know that’s the thing that Al is in love with. I think that if anything, Al will make him a scholarship player on the roster for at least his four year contract, as opposed to forcing him into the QB role.

None of this is to say that’s not to say that he won’t pan out in some role — I’m definitely pulling for him! If he has the right work ethic, learning ability, and willingness to do whatever is best for the team (and his career) then he has those things in size and speed that can’t be taught. But I don’t think that his presence would cause Al to block bringing in any other young QB projects (say someone like Lindley from SD State in the mid rounds), especially given his love for big, strong pocket passers that can throw the bomb.

That’s their strengths. D-WOW is going to be great no matter where he’s hit. Kid is amazing. Should be ROY is he continues his progress & gets played.

Yep…I beleive its a timing thing as he does have the arm…

  162. JB Says:

I think Soup’s long under-throws have more to do with not wanting an INT as opposed to lack of arm strength. He just needs to forget about his INT record and pull the trigger and trust his receivers will get there in time.

I thought that DHB made two solid catches on the catchable balls thrown his way last week. The first was actually a great peek into what he can do with his speed on that deep out. JC lead him to the sideline and let him beat tight double coverage by pulling up and using his body to screen.

I know the knock on him is his hands. But he is looking like he’s learning the true skills of the route running and getting open other than by just running by people. If he catches more than he drops, he’s going to start changing people’s opinions.

I don’t mean to sound impatient…but seriously…a catch here or there will not get it. A run stop here or there will not get it….an occassional deep completion won’t get it.

This team has to start playing on all cylinders.

Right now there is only 1 player truly playing to his full capability…DMAC….

The rest have to just man up….nothing more can be said from the blog, Hue, Al Davis, media etc.

Got a lot of veteran players that gotta step up.

Its like when my dad used to say…”Your too old for that now”

These players aren’t rooks anymore…gotta start earning it!

I hear all that…this year is the time. The fan base is almost ready to check out permanently.

Gotta start winning these games….no more would of, could of, should of.

The fact the team can’t get more than 30K for a national tv game (even if preseason) is reflective of the need to win now!
    ***********************************************

Will be more than that game time….I’ll go 40 K….some Saints contingency will add to that…..truth……but we have more weapons back for this game. People will wanna see this

I hear ya for representin strong.

this Raider team deserves the 12th man too.

Fans add energy and help the home team…anyone within 50 miles of Oakland should be making plans to attend at least 2 gms this year.

  181. SR Raider Says:

2 gms? Making plans for 8 games

I’ll be making at least two games and I am thousands of miles away

The Raiders deserve the fans support…

Nice SnB. I was talking about those within 50 miles

The main things I will be looking at this game are the overall defense, the rb position, and the o-line. If Campbell is out I say throw Pryor out there at the end and see what her can do. That’s why it’s preseason.

  186. priesttj Says:

You know it’s strange but the website is reporting the game will be shown LIVE at 5pm on channel 2 it doesn’t sya it wil be blakced out at all and usually the report that.

I just can’t imagine a local network not picking up the game it doesn’t make sense their ratings for a Raider game would be more than any Sunday Night movie they can think of.

They game will be shown locally it’s preseason they can buy these games and show them. Per league rules during regular season it’s different.

Are you nuts? Putting Pryor out there would be insanity. I should not need to go into detail why.

The O-line will be the most important. Without them there’s no running or passing game PERIOD. Without them, people sustain injuries, some season ending. The O-line needs to be the right combination of players operating as a single cohesive unit. IMO, Loper, Carlisle & Barnes are NOT what I want to see out there. I guess I’ll have to wait until tomorrow to see what HuJack is thinking.

    JB,

Yeah without the line the long bomb to Ford never happens. The best thing about this is the Saints have top tier talent. Hopefully we won’t play down to their levels like we always do with the 9ers.

And if the line looks good in the game, why not throw our Pryor and feed him some base plays.

So I was going over your guys schedule. This is how I think things will play out:

    @Broncos W
@Bills W (you all going to get your hopes up LOL)
    Jets L
    Patriots L
    @ Texans L
Browns L (oh oh, its panick time y’all)
    Chiefs W
    Broncos W
@ Chargers L (of course, and this is where your season slides out of control)
    @ Vikings L
    Bears W
    @ Miami L
    @ Packers L
Lions L (Terrele Pryor’s debut, and it aint pretty)
    @ Chiefs L
Chargers L (Jason Campbell’s last game as a Raider)

It looks like the Raiders go 5-11 and slip back into suckdom. Chargers will be back on top again.

    1)Chargers 12-4
    2)Chiefs 9-7
    3)Raiders 5-11
    4)Broncos 4-12
