Wisniewski, Seymour and Mitchell still out; C.J. returns to practice
By Steve Corkran
Tuesday, August 30th, 2011 at 11:55 am in Oakland Raiders.
Left guard Stefen Wisniewski, defensive tackle Richard Seymour, safety Mike Mitchell and wide receivers Chaz Schilens and Louis Murphy were among those who weren’t at practice Tuesday.
Wisniewski was in uniform but not taking part in drills. He has a wrap on his right knee, though it’s uncertain what the nature of his injury is or if coach Hue Jackson just opted to give him a day off.
Seymour was out of practice Friday in Napa. but he wasn’t injured, according to Jackson. Seymour also sat out the Raiders game against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday night with what Raiders play-by-play announcer Greg Papa described as a hamstring injury.
More later, when we have access to Jackson after practice.
On the bright side, cornerback Chris Johnson and defensive tackle John Henderson returned to practice after lenghty absences. Johnson was doing everything asked of the other defensive backs before media access ended at 11:45 a.m. He underwent surgery for an undisclosed injury about 10 days ago.
Henderson has been bothered by a sore foot for part of training camp. He is being counted upon to be a key part of Oakland’s defensive line rotation.
Other players who weren’t at practice: receiver Shawn Bayes, tight end Kevin Boss, fullback James McCluskey, safety Zac Etheridge, cornerback Jeremy Ware, linebackers Sam Williams, Chris Francis and Bruce Davis II, and guard Roy Schuening.
Quarterback Terrelle Pryor was in uniform and taking part in the quarterback drills for the second time since he joined the Raiders on Friday. Jackson said it’s possible that Pryor will play against the Seattle Seahawks on Friday night.

CC is arguably the best O-lineman we have, no way a 4th rounder should take his job in a 1yr or 2.
=======================================================
Tell that to Kyle Boller when he let Shaun Rogers laid 400lbs on him. Haha Carlisle is out of his element in the power-blocking scheme & i want a beast that can get to the 2nd level..that is not CC’s game
/////////////////
Raiders aren’t running an all power-blocking scheme, they’re mixing it up, even Bush said its all the same upon his return.

Conditioning seems to be a problem throughout the sports industry – baseball, football, etc. Suspect the cause is something the industry does throughout the sport, such as taping up everyone before the game, or the design of the pads, etc.
As an example, once upon at time, anyone who did lots of lifting at work was required to wear some king of velcro support for the lower back. Yes, the back felt much better with the belt after a long day. Short term injuries really went down…Then it happened. When these folks came down with a back injury, it was major due to the limitations caused by the belt. End of the belts.
Maybe too much conditioning is the culprit. Often conditioning leads to building up muscles unevenly.

Has anyone checked out Routt’s personal website? I came acrossed it on accident and it’s really kind of entertaining. It’s kind of like he’s trying to pump himself up to everyone to make them think he is an elite corner or something (not that I don’t think that he’s not, I just think the jury is still out).

For all those who consistently blast Mr D for giving Routt the money, now do you see why??
Last year Routt covered most #1’s for opposing teams and people didn’t notice because no one threw at Nnamdi so most of time no one knew WHO he was covering.
Also as far as our secondary is concerned the WR’s and TE for Drew Brees made some fantastic catches more than Brees beating coverage those guys just made a ton of plays because some of those passess should’ve been picks. If we see him again I think they will be.
Also the Dline didn’t only miss Big Sey but TK barely played we were always in nickle with Houston and Bryant at the DT’s I only saw TK in on the first drive and some short yardage.
As much Hue is saying he wants to win these preseason games he’s not playing the players he CAN WIN them with. So I think Hue is trying to under sell and over deliver only it’s not working the way he would like. If he wanted to win no way Ford and DMC dit out these games when they are healthy. Seymour is healthy yet he didn’t play. All of a sudden CJ is practicing was he healthy too?
Hue jackson has soem Sly Fox in him he’s playing possum IMO because I think not only could CJ have played but so could Lito Sheppard. He’s not so much trying to win that he going to show his hand. He’s trying to win with what he’s willing to show.
I was able to see the game last night and TJ is sick with it. He has unlimited potential you don’t get your first carry and lay down funk like that unless you have some stuff that is way beyond what people can have in mind. His makumiss is second to none we are going to have a ton of fun watching that kid do the Boogaloo.

They traded a 2013 7th round pick (for a guy pickedi n the top half of round 2 last year)… how is that a lack of scouting? If the guy makes one special teams tackle in the next 2 years he is already better than 80% of 7th rounders.

No he’s not Nnamdi but Routt has been an elite corner for 2 years. When he beat out CJ he hasn’t missed a beat and now CJ has to step into that next level where you can say the same thing about him. Routt was outstanding last year just outstanding.

I can forgive the 2 point conversions because their kicker was hurt. But the Saints going for it on 4th and 2 on the opening drive was like a lack of respect, in your face bush league move. They could have taken the 3 and kicked off, but they wanted to show up the Raiders on national TV, and they did. And it was all punctuated with Mark Ingram’s taunting by thowing the ball at the black hole. How’d he not get flagged for that?

Why on earth would the coaches tip their hand and reveal their looks and schemes on OFFENSE and DEFENSE in the freakin PRESEASON!
Hue Jackson is not stupid…That man is playing POSSUM and rightfully so!
Remember when the Raiders surprised everyone and blitzed the hell out of Philly? Completely confused the entire NFL that week who believed that we are completely unaware and oblivious to the concept of blitzing!
The element of surprise, when used effectively, is a powerful weapon.
Maybe some of these morons in here will realize that the whole purpose of the pre season is to evaluate the new players, and see how they react in real game time situations…
Yes they want to win, but they want to win based on natural talent and ability, not scheme and game plan.
Come week 1 in Denver I think we will see what this team is REALLY capable of!

Armchair,
the reason teams show real looks in the 3rd pre-season game (assuming it’s not a reg. season opponent) is that you have to try that stuff live at SOME point in the pre-season.
You think Chuck wants to wait until Denver to “try” a bunch of stuff the players haven’t practiced vs live competition?
So you use some of it the 3rd week, when the starters are in there.
You saw a boatload of screens, audibles, etc on offense. To think they were playing vanilla on defense is wrong. Well, they kinda play vanilla all the time, but you get my point

How does Bey stretch the field? Does he ever require double coverage? Do the safeties cheat? Maybe at first, but he’s a known quantity now. He’s not even effective as a decoy anymore. Blocking WR’s are not a high value commodity. He does work hard, but he’s never going to develop into an even average WR. Has the same instincts receiving as DVD does defending.

solid 53 redshirt can’t see us keeping Tonga although I like the idea of having at least one real blocking FB. Don’t know if they’ll keep him but i still like B Davis potential. The guy is so athletic and has great size to become a OLB sometimes transition takes longer when you’ve been playing Dline all your life

@Redshirt Mostly good. I see no way they keep two fullbacks. Probably more likely to keep four tight ends because of injuries.
Doubt Chekwa would get cut. And despite his play I doubt S.Moore gets anything but a spot on the practice squad.

Would be tragically dumb to not keep two FBs….just for the mere fact Reece can run block to save his life is why you will need Tonga

DHb stretches the field and is key to creating everything from the run, to the pass underneath the D. Heck he even takes a lot of pressure off of JC. He is excited when DHB is out there.
I will never forget that one big catch he had last year for a TD. It was worth the cash. Plus, he can block!!!
********
How does Bey stretch the field? Does he ever require double coverage? Do the safeties cheat? Maybe at first, but he’s a known quantity now. He’s not even effective as a decoy anymore. Blocking WR’s are not a high value commodity. He does work hard, but he’s never going to develop into an even average WR. Has the same instincts receiving as DVD does defending.
—————————————————
Guest I was just bull crapping!!! DHB sucks right now!!! I just thought I would use some of that foolishness we keep hearing from the coaching staff.
I will say that DVD is a project. He was taken in a later round where he should have been taken. It would have been nice to go lower but we needed a DB and there was a major drop in the draft on DBs if we would have waited. This blog pumped the guy up way to much. I mean lets be honest he did not even start his senior year. DVD is thinking way to much right now noting is by instinct yet. Once he gets to that level we will see. I mean give the guy a break he played Fitzy one weeke and Breeze the next.

I like the idea of both Tonga and Reece because Tonga can block and Reece just makes great plays (even with the limited time he gets). I’d rather see Tonga at fullback and Reece getting Cartwright’s spot.

Cartwright is FAR to valuable on ST… he singlehandedly created the lane for at LEAST one of Fords TD returns last year, and Rock is a good leader on this team.

If you watch any tape of Branch last year & the last 3 games of preseason you see become aware that Branch has NO cover skills & takes very bad angles making his speed useless..On the other hand Mitchell developed a reputation for being able to cover the Te quite handily and laying big hits(because he doesnt take bad angles)on other players. Not to mention mm34 does very well in the box against the run

You can’t make this stuff up it’s damn near a looney bin. One of the best safties we have is now on scholarship.
Listen just because YOU don’t like a player doesn’t mean he cannot play. he may not have the exact attributes you think he should have but don’t get CRAZY!!
I was watching Archie Bunker yesterday with my father-in-law and it reminded me of the guys in here. Overly opinionated and with not much insight. But Oh No!! They have it all worked out the coaches are blind if they don’t do it MY WAY then Al Davis is the reason………….LOL

If Tyvon Branch had ANY coverage skills, he’d be our starting FS and Huff would not have been resigned.
Branch is too aggressive and prone to pump fakes and look offs.
Can’t play a lick of zone and does not have the play recognition to be an impact player at that position.

So what he make tackles 20 yds down the field.
Branch is the DHB of the secondary.

Agreed! The amount of panic by “Raider fans” i saw on this blog since sunday nite was absolutely RIGHT!
August 30th, 2011 at 1:38 pm
Man did anybody see that the Lions beat the Patriots 34-10! It was the 3rd preseason game, the super bowl of the preseason, the final dress rehearsal. They must be really panicking in New England? Matt Stafford really carved them up.
Well you cannot discount the fact that the Patriots drafted a QB in the 3rd round. They must not be happy with Brady.
I cannot claim credit for this awesome insight. I have been reading the blog regularly and following the words of some really “special” raider fans.
August 30th, 2011 at 1:39 pm
It seems to me like Branch just needs to get into the film room.
McClain talked about knowing the play and where it’s going BEFORE the snap.
I don’t see ANY of that in Branch.
Started to see it from Huff last year, which is why he made such a big jump.
August 30th, 2011 at 1:40 pm
Good call, J Hill @165.
I think that reason is why McClain is going to make a huge leap forward this year.

So I guess Mitchell is our best saftey?? Huh?? I know Huff is not our best saftey… and with the Branch bashing… he’s not our best either… so I guess Mitchell is our best saftey??? LOL..
Maybe the raider coaches haven’t realized that yet….
August 30th, 2011 at 1:45 pm
Jhill Branch is not a great cover safety is true we all see that but to insenuate that he is not an impact player is way way way off. Huff was resigned for his verstility the way they will use him this year you’ll see what I mean. Mike Mitchell is a very good safety as well he can cover much better than Branch as can Huff but Branch is a natural FS.
What you guys don’t see in these coverages is that we play our safeties interchangeable there is no FS there is no SS we do what night be termed as matchup coverage and sometimes we get schemed and we get beat. But as far as SS FS forget that concept I’ve been trying to figure it out all preseason and the truth is there is neither we’re just matching up and playing. Because on one play Branch is in the box the next play he’s single high so to be honest I can’t figure out what position he plays. Huff has played as much corner as he has safety.
So to argue about this stuff is MUTE just watch how they play and you’ll see I’m right Huff was playing the slot most of the game vs NO.
August 30th, 2011 at 1:48 pm

Branch is the rated the 4th best SS…in Madden 2012.
August 30th, 2011 at 1:49 pm
How in the heck can you say in one breath that Branch can’t cover, but you think he can play FS for us?
The number one job for our FS is zone coverage.
Cmon Priest!
Mitchell is better in coverage, but Branch is a better FS in the Raider scheme?
August 30th, 2011 at 1:49 pm
Hue Jackson has similar problems as other Raider coaches have had.
Lots of penalties
Poor run defense
Giving up big plays on defense especially on 3rd down
I think we all expected to see some of those issues addressed and we wanted to see improvement on these things during the preseason.
Fact is we have not seen much improvement on these lingering issues during the preseason games.
So say what you want to about fans complaining but most of us have the right to complain because we put our money where our mouth is we go to games and buy jerseys and each year we hope for a better team.
Whats wrong with fans wanting to see improvement?
I would like to know?

Jhill because a FS doesn’t have the responsibility of coverage he’s a FREE SAFETY it denotes his responsibility is center field. The FS reads the QB and tries to guess which side he may throw then he commits to that play the SS has the resonsibility of the TE he has to cover him he is the (strongside safety) which means TE which ever side the TE is on is the strongside that’s the side the SS is responsible for.
While the FREE safety plays over the top of the defense. That allows him to be essentially free from direct responsibility. He offers help to whatever corner is being targeted by the QB. FREE(Freedom to chose) which side to play.

Your free safety is normally the smartest player in the sceondary because he can do a number of responsibilities based on what he sees the offense trying to do. He is the QB of the secondary he calls the formations and he sets the secondary.
If you watch Branch nine timea of ten he’s telling players what to do even when Nnanmdi was here he often got in Nnamdi’s face over a coverage. Branch is without a doubt an impact player……….period
August 30th, 2011 at 2:02 pm
I disagree with your definition of our FS, Priest.
I guess that means you are right, huh?
You’re right that he gets to guess where to go. A QB can help that along with look offs and pump fakes, wouldn’t you say.
I don’t know how you can claim to watch so much film but fail to acknowledge this big flaw in his game. The 4 times a game he whiffs on these plays = BIG PLAYS against our defense.

____________________________________________________
It’s all the supplements these guys use. Builds muscle but doesn’t build the frame. I think this has a lot to do with the concussions as well. Guy did seem to get hurt like this back in the old days. They were beer drinking meat and potato guys. Who were naturally big and strong. Think about putting a big block V8 in a ford pinto. It you don’t beef up the frame and the drive terrain something will fail.

I agree completely, J.
Branch has all the tools but doesn’t see the play develop in advance. He reacts late all the time and is easily looked off. He’s good in the box, but even then he whiffs when being too aggressive.
Then he’s not so aggressive in coverage, where he should be laying the wood as the ball arrives or immediately after.
Branch just doesn’t seem to play smart.

So to argue about this stuff is MUTE just watch how they play and you’ll see I’m right Huff was playing the slot most of the game vs NO.
——————————–
Listen up, Father Pride & Poise, it’s MOOT, not MUTE. MOOT is a legal term. MUTE is what you’ll be rendered when old man Davis let’s us all down again this year.
August 30th, 2011 at 2:22 pm
4th play of the game, Branch has the right side of the field in a zone responsibilty over the top. Is in NO position to help DVD, who you would think he’d have his attention focused on.
Instead of paying attention to the receivers in his area, he is looking in the backfield at the QB the entire time. WR slips right into his zone and makes the catch.
Zero awareness!

We weren’t in the top 10 pass defenses for nothing let it get better it’s still preseason. It may take a few games for these guys to settle down they just lost one of the best corners in the entire league…………relax
………
I dunno man. I think the reason we were 2nd in pass defense last season has more to do with the fact that our run defense was 29th in the league. And our run defense probably would have been worse if our offense didn’t score as many points as they did and more teams didn’t have to throw to catch up. Point is, our run D was so bad teams didn’t have to pass.

Jhill please man I didn’t say he wasn’t part of the problem. Listen to what I’m saying ………..all players have strengths and weaknesses there are no perfect players or not many they key to playing defense is put players in position to utilize their strengths. A QB like Drew Brees will slice up the best safeties when he’s on he’s extremely hard to stop no matter how great your secondary is. That team has been together for 5 years they went to a SB and won it for a reason. To expect a secondary thrown together to stop that offense is ridiculous………….that is MY POINT.
Take the butt whuppin and move on man and get better. We were missing a starting corner and playing a rookie what the hell do you expect???
Come on man please let’s deal in reality it’s preseason thye’re trying to put the defense together now and to go against an experienced team like NO is NOT EASY.

Henderson has been bothered by a sore foot for part of training camp. He is being counted upon to be a key part of Oakland’s defensive line rotation.

OAKLAND FINDS A GEM IN TAIWAN JONES
The rookie running back could play a significant role for the Raiders this season.
-Wes Bunting
There were a number of questions surrounding former Eastern Washington standout Taiwan Jones when he declared early for the 2011 NFL draft.
1. With a playing weight during the 2010 season of around 170-pounds, does he have the physical make-up to hold his own in the NFL?
2. Will he check out medically, coming off a fractured left foot that forced him to miss the final game of his junior season?
3. Could he add more girth/size to his frame and still maintain the type of dynamic straight-line speed that made him such an intriguing prospect?
Talking to scouts leading up to the NFL draft there were two trains of thought concerning Jones as an NFL running back. The first was that there simply aren’t many productive backs at the NFL level that measure in a six feet tall and play under 200-pounds.
The second was that this guy possessed the talent needed to become a dynamic sub-package type option who could create big plays for an offense when you get him in space.
And after watching him in his first NFL action Sunday night, he looks to be the latter of those two opinions. Jones was quick to press the hole, displayed good patience allowing blocks to set up and then accelerated very quickly into the open field. He displayed the type of confidence in his first step where he didn’t simply need to outrun defenders to daylight in order to gain yardage. As he exhibited the type of vision/feel to calmly pick his way through traffic before exploding away from defenders and outpacing angles into the second level.
And once he got into the open field he showcased the type of straight-line speed/second gear to be the type of big play threat the Raiders must have envisioned when they drafted him in April.
Now, he’s still is a thinner back –despite his effort to get into the 190-195-pound range– who possesses a narrow frame and is going to struggle to break tackles inside and hold his own in blitz pick-up. However, the Raiders have a back who can be dynamic in space both on perimeter runs and catching the football out of the backfield.
Jones should be a consistent part of the Raiders offense even as a rookie. In my view, he’s an ideal situational type back because of his ability to flip the field and be playmaker anytime he gets his hands on the football even if only given limited touches throughout a game.
