WR Schilens back on field, G Wisniewski returns to practice

By Steve Corkran
Wednesday, August 31st, 2011 at 12:10 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Oft-injured wide receiver Chaz Schilens was spotted on the practice field a short time ago, in full uniform and going through agility drills with a trainer.
That represents progress for a player who has battled a slew of injuries since he joined the Raiders in 2008 as a seventh-round draft pick out of San Diego State.
Schilens suffered an injury Aug. 11 against the Arizona Cardinals on an end around. He missed the rest of that game and has not practiced since. Wednesday marked only the second time in three weeks that he has been seen working out, while his teammates practiced nearby.
The Raiders are counting upon Schilens to be one of their primary receivers this season, if not their No. 1 wide receiver. At this point, they would be thrilled just to have him healthy and available to play at any level in the regular-season opener against the Denver Broncos on Sept. 12.
Schilens has appeared in 29 of 48 games during his three-year NFL career. He missed eight games in 2009 and 11 last season. He has caught 49 passes for 631 yards and five touchdowns overall.
The emergence of veteran Derek Hagan and rookie Denarius Moore as viable options in the passing game lessens the importance of Schilens rushing back for the regular season. However, the Raiders still feel as if Schilens has the potential to be their top receiver at some point.

*Projected starting left guard Stefen Wisniewski was back at practice after missing one day with what coach Hue Jackson described as a “ding.”
Wisniewski has his right knee wrapped, though it’s unclear whether that is the source of his discomfort. He appeared to be moving around fine and ready to proceed with his quest to nail down a starting job his rookie season.

*Defensive tackle Richard Seymour is supposed to be healthy, according to Jackson, yet he was working off to the side during practice.
It’s more likely that he is working through a hamstring injury, which is what Raiders play-by-play announcer Greg Papa said is the reason for Seymour missing practice the past several days as well as last Sunday’s game against the New Orleans Saints.

*Tight end Kevin Boss (knee), linebacker Sam Williams (undisclosed), safety Mike Mitchell (knee), cornerback Jeremy Ware (ankle) and receiver Louis Murphy (hamstring/groin) also missed practice.

*The Raiders are at 80 players right now. Today marked the final full practice for the 26 players who will be cut, traded or placed on injured-reserve between now and Saturday afternoon, the deadline for teams to be at 53 players.
Rookie quarterback Terrelle Pryor won’t count against the roster as of Monday because he will be placed on the suspended list. The Raiders don’t have to account for him on their 53-man roster until he returns from his five-game suspension Week 6.

*Rookie undrafted linebacker Chris Francis also returned to practice after missing one day. He is a long-shot to make the 53-man roster but a solid candidate to be placed on the practice squad if he gets cuts and clears waivers.

*Remember to join the live chat with defensive tackle Tommy Kelly at 3:30 p.m. today. Feel free to submit questions and follow along as Kelly answers questions from viewers.

Fine, the point remains the same.

Raiders will not do what Vikings do (Cover 2 behind two mammoth run-stopping DTs.) Raiders prefer pass-rushers at DT for some reason.

Our D philosophy is stupid and expensive. Need 11 uber athletes to make it work.

Even if he were always healthy, I don’t know if he’s a #1 WR.

Schilens, Ford, Moore and DHB aren’t going anywhere.

If the Raiders carry 6 WRs, Murphy and Hagan will make it.

If they only carry 5, Al will cut Hagan. Watch and see.

Hagan ran a 4.45 yard dash at the Combine.

    Average (solid) NFL WR speed.

    ^^^^^^^^
Hagan has learned how to play WR in the NFL and he has learned from playing with solid vet WR’s like Chambers, Booker and Welker in Miami and he has learned from playing and competing against talented WR’s like Nicks, Smith and Manningham.

The guy knows how to compete and it seems like he wants it now!

He is already a more complete WR than DHB! That is obvious!

The problem with the Raiders this year will be with Chuck B running the D!

If Hagan gets cut, mark that down as one of the many stupid things Al Davis has done.

Right along with the hiring of Chuck B as DC!

we will be a much better team this year, but imagine this team over the next 3-4 years!!!

Hu jack and davis clearly have a synergy building in the way they handle the draft, and offensive philosophy. As Hu jack and uncle al continue to stock pile talent through the draft over the next couple of years, and our current crop of youngsters come into their own it will be huge!!!

You think Jc has it going now? wait until next year and the year after when he will have every assignment for every team mate on every play absolutely mastered.

Jc hu jack and sunders are working miracles with our offense and we have unbelievably explosive play makers all over the field. JC will spread the ball around and manage the game, but he will also make plays now that he has this team by the throat. Want proof? see the back shoulder deep passes from jc this preseason. This pass only works when wr and qb are on the same page. Looks like JC smacked the wr group in the head with the playbook and demanded them to get in gear, and it worked.

Im calling it now, within the next 2-4 years we will be in the superbowl.

    Book it!

Everyone of these guys were saying they don’t think JC has it”I hope he does BUT I doubt it” that was the mantra in here up to a couple of days ago. Now I don’t hear from the AIG’s of the world anymore……I wonder why?

  24. Mistic1 Tha Supavillain Says:

    newsflash…….

WE ARE NOT COUNTING ON CHAZ FOR ANYTHING IMPORTANT!!!

Chaz is a 7th round pick playing for next to nothing. He isnt costing us anything but a roster spot, and a healthy chaz is at least worth the 6th wr spot on our roster. Chaz is in danger of losing playing time, due to the emergence of ford, moore and hagan.

Anyone that thinks Hu jack will cut a wr from this team that has produced in game is out of their skull crazy. davis clearly trust hu jack and suanders when it comes to evaluating wr play, and passing offense. Hu jack will have the latitude to play or start whome ever he wants, and has major input as to who is on the final 53.

  27. alex7 Says:

I’ll wait to see how JC performs against the Jets, Patriots, Bears, Packers, and Dolphins before I pass judgement.

I expect it’ll be no different than every other year of his career…average.

  30. alex7 Says:

hard to tackle when your scheme makes you constantly turn your back to the play following WRs and TEs.

Davis drafted DT Lamarr Houston in 2010 and promptly moved him to DE.

6th round pick Anttaj Hawthorne in 2005 was the last DT drafted before that.

In 2009, Shilens had 30 catches in 8 games. That’s a pace of 60 in a full year. And that was done with a horrible passing offense. Murphy’s career high for catches is 41.

From what i’ve seen, and read, Schilens is clearly our best wr. He’s huge, strong, pretty fast, and can catch. Although it seems he’s the healthiest he’s been the past couple of years, he is incredibly injury prone. I keep hoping that he had a recurring foot problem that has finally healed, and we’ll finally get 14-16 games out of him.

But i am torn about what to do. Hagan deserves to be kept. Ford and moore ooze with potential. DHB is young, improving and on scholarship. Murphy has performed the best for the past couple years.

I’d think they’d keep 6 wr’s, but i’m not sure they can do that and keep an extra cb (which al loves to do). If they decide to go with 5, i think hagan has got to be the one to get cut. Which sucks, because he’s good.

  79. alex7 Says:

Yeah, I’d say if DHB just improves a tiny bit he surpasses Murphy. Murphy with all those drops, average size, average speed, I don’t see anything special.

Murphy has stayed healthy, that’s the only reason he’s put up the best numbers on our squad (not saying much). Simply has received the most balls thrown his way, despite his drops.

You throw Murphy and DHB the same number of passes this year, I think DHB outperforms him.

Still, they’re both at the bottom of the list, who cares who’s better.

FREMONT (CBS SF) – A leading Bay Area manufacturer of solar power systems has abruptly shut down operations and laid off its staff while it sought to file for bankruptcy protection.

    ********

That company “Solyndra” was fabricating low efficiency solar systems that made no economic sense and had to be subsidized. Dont put this on BO. The solar industry is going through growing pains, for every Solyndra there is a company out there hiring people and putting up solar PV systems that actually work.

    ^^^^^^^^
China is taking over the commercial solar market that Solyndra was looking to compete against.

That’s how bad it is. Manufacturing needs to become strong again in the U.S. for the U.S. to get back on it’s feet, but China is dominating.

    =========================

Gannon threw the ball 40-50 times in some games. Jc will never do that, too many running backs that need the ball. He will post solid raider career numbers that are comparable to what gannon did here.

Career for career JC will have far better career numbers, he was a starter much earlier in his career and us already far ahead of where gannon was in his 7th year.

Based on what form of rationale? Pryor will NOT see the field in a regular season game unless we are up by 48 points. He’ll them be in there with whatever 3rd & 4th stringers we have available. Short of that he’ll be manning the clipboard studying a test retake of the Wunderlick. This kid has physical attributes, He has nothing else that would qualify him to play in a season game right now. He NEEDS TO LEARN. HE NEEDS TO LISTEN. HE NEEDS TO WATCH. He needs to develop into a “professional” NFL player. The only thing he’s ready for right now is lunch.

    other reasons:

-employers have to pay into so many programs: health ins, unemployment ins, social security, industrial ins

-also have to ’sponsor’ drug and alchohol out patient costs under certain conditions

-health and safety regulations, some for the better and some are too cumbersome to bear

-many various types of business related taxes, property taxes, office and equipment taxes

-business insurances, from product protection to liability, and those rates rise with annual audits

-regulations; i.e. epa, osha, etc. all have the fork and knife ready, you just supply the meal.

-many many other surrounding costs it could make you head spin. its a wonder we can even do business anymore.

    Gradkowski raider,

here are the pre season numbers side by side

    Jc 23 /33 69.7 comp % 290 yds qb rating 94.3 1td 1int

    scabs 16 /28 57.1 comp% 148 yds qb rating 56.8 0td 1int

this is what scabs has been and always will be for his career. i have been telling you that for over a year now.

JC won the gig because he is far better than scabs. JC has room to improve and is showing that he still has not reached a ceiling, yet scabs has already maxed and is bottoming out fast. the pre season numbers are just more proof that I was right and you were woefully off base.

I think Hagan is another guy who could be a team leader. All business.

It was one half of one preseason game, but I saw tremendous growth from JC. Nobody liked the pick but I’m glad he put the ball up there and tried to give his guy a chance at the end of the half.

I saw a lot more decisiveness and confidence. Looks like him and Hagan are on the same page, too.

Once we get our speed back on the field and we got Taiwan as a 3rd down specialist (as soon as he learns to block), that offense is gonna be explosive.

    =============================

    It is simple really.

In washington, the coach that drafted was gone soon after, this left JC having to prove himself year after year, as they circulated coaches and offensive philosophies.

JC is honest, and isnt able to fake swagger. Now that he has a firm grasp of the offense including audibles and teammates assignments he is able to be the natural leader that the qb has to be. It is not easy to tell people what to do when you are learning on the job.

There are no clinton portis/ deangelo hall type on this team. JC wasnt able to truly lead in washington there were far too many distractions and locker room cancers sniping at each other in the locker room. With the mercurial yet clueless owner, jc was never on solid ground that you need to exude confidence and leadership.

here in oakland he is the unquestioned leader and for the first time since auburn the team is his. he knows it, his play has vindicated the choice, and you will now see all of JC’s talent come to the fore front, including his ability to lead.

Mistic, but I thought preseason didn’t count? When I brought up Campbell missing the wide open receiver in the end zone vs. SF, you went into the whole thing about how it was just preseason, and nobody should be concerned. But now that you’ve found that Campbell has better preseason stats than Gradkowski, suddenly preseason matters. Make up your mind.
    =================

1.) I have never said preseason doesnt count.

2.) One missed opportunity in the pre season isnt indicative of who JC is as a qb. his career numbers particularly in the red zone demonstrate this beyond the shadow of a doubt.

3.) scabs numbers are a continuation of his sorry career pattern. He stinks on ice

    —————-

How many bloggers here would take and beat Kelly in a one-on-one brawl?

Kelly would be the pants down favorite.

Wasn’t it just last week that Raider nation discussed Pryor scored a 27 on the Wonderlic, not a 7? Yet, many swallow this story about a 7 score?

When you hire a contractor to work on your house they need to work hard and fast to make money. Most of us in the corporate world do not have the luxury to sit on our hands half the day or we will lose our jobs to someone else.

The government has Unions which make it hard to fire people.

have you ever driven on the freeway and seen 5 CALTRANS workers with one guy working and 4 guys leaning on their shovel?

If that was a private contractor everyone would be working and no one would be leaning on a shovel.

Sorry that you cannot see this obvious waste of resources that our government puts up with that would not fly in the corporate world.

I can only assume that you work for the government and are defending your own kind.

You still have not given me one solid example of a life time politician that left office to pursue a corporate career?

Pryor sucks,Hue sucks,Raiders suck waste of a draft pick.

I really don’t see what the hype is all about.

31 teams passed on him we were the only one to touch him and we did it in an act of desperation.

Sorry I am not buying it.

DHBs ready to lead the team. In the N.O. post game interview, I saw something in his eyes (and heard something in his words) that I hadn’t seen up until this point in his career, at least with the Raiders.

    Anger.

I think DHB is finally asserting himself.

I could see recycling some aluminum cans and dropping the $200 of proceeds on a 80-1 CHARGER Superbowl win. I wouldnt miss the money and would make their playoff run doubly interesting.
