CB Ware, S Brown also get boot
By Steve Corkran
Saturday, September 3rd, 2011 at 3:18 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Once again, Aaron Wilson’s pipeline to the league office pays dividends. This time, he reports that cornerback Jeremy Ware and safety Stevie Brown are among the players cut by the Raiders.
That brings the total to four, to go with cornerbacks Lito Sheppard and Walter McFadden.
The Raiders submitted their moves to the league office 15 minutes ago. Word from Alameda is that the Raiders aren’t in a hurry to announce their moves until the league office has approved everything.
In other words, it might be another hour or two, if not more, before the Raiders confirm their roster moves.
Ware and Brown were seventh-round selection by the Raiders in the 2010 NFL draft.

Could Shaper be our 2011 Woodson? May have to sigh someone is they keep trying to play Huff as a corner. First rounder for Briggs and there second. Not sure how much quality guys are going to bu cut. We need a stub LB to make up for this crappy scheme we a running. Our a true DC.

I think this makes it a lock for Mr. Sterling Moore & Mr. Chekwa to make the roster.
I’m somewhat surprised and not surprised that Mr. Brown got cut.
I wonder if he will once again get the on again off again treatment he got last year.
September 3rd, 2011 at 3:23 pm
Brown was not playing like he did last year. I think we will be bringing in some FA in the next week or so.

September 3rd, 2011 at 3:27 pm
EM you’re right I think the lack of OTA’s made him a bit slower in his reaction this training camp.
He did make the team better last season. I could dfinately see Mr. Brown getting picked up by someone, Houston maybe.
September 3rd, 2011 at 3:27 pm
I thought Brown playing well on special teams. He will probably be brought back.
September 3rd, 2011 at 3:28 pm

September 3rd, 2011 at 3:28 pm

Not easy being a Raider beat writer. Kim Jong Il in North Korea uses the Raiders as a model for disseminating information.
More likely, the National Guy has a link into agents and is able to get snippets faster….
September 3rd, 2011 at 3:31 pm
A poster earlier said that Lito might be re-signed so his contract isn’t guaranteed for the year.
I can’t see the Raiders not retaining Lito or signing another veteran CB that can run and play man2man

Brandon Meriweather/Ricky Brown
Anyone have any insight into Meriweather?? Seems like an odd cut…only 4 seasons in the league and 2 probowls under his belt. Was he injured? Drugs/legal problems? Attitude?
I noticed was Ricky Brown cut from the Patriots. I always liked him, I thought he did well in his limited playing time with us. We could use some help at LB & he’s familiar with our system…

Wow, guess I was alone in seeing Stevie’s potential. These moves simply mean Huff is gonna be asked to do a hell of a lot, and he’s gonna be expected to do it. The verdict on him will officially be in after this year considering all the snaps he’ll get at various positions.
September 3rd, 2011 at 3:34 pm
Hopefully our defense will be better when we really scheme. Blitzs our easily seen.
September 3rd, 2011 at 3:35 pm
Mistic1 told us that Steve Brown was a play-maker, and way better than Huff.
Fact is, he was a converted LB, who covered like a LB, and tackled like a DB.
September 3rd, 2011 at 3:36 pm
Raider should sign Tommie Harris.
We are deep on the DL, maight as well make it even better.
I would like to see Mr. Crumbie make the 53-man roster he palyed well at times that I noticed.
We can simply play 5 man fronts and two LBs.

The guy is a known gang-banger, and a liability in coverage.
But he will blast you, both on and off the field.
September 3rd, 2011 at 3:38 pm
Crumbie seems to get pushed aroung to me. Whole third string d was garbage. We can not afford any major injuries on D or we are screwed.
September 3rd, 2011 at 3:38 pm
Yeah Stevie was a tweener, a hybrid.
He was good enough, but neither strong enough or fast enough at times.
He will probably be a head coach some day and lead the Raiders to a Super Bowl Championship.
September 3rd, 2011 at 3:40 pm
Plus I’m sure Bellichek was not too found of Merriweather spending the lockout shooting people, than rapping about it.
September 3rd, 2011 at 3:40 pm
Bells, I agree with you. He did get pushed around at times, but also made plays, he will probably end up on the practice squad.
He can get stronger, learn, and get better with his techniques.

6 WRS: Ford, Heyward-Bey, Moore, Hagan, Schilens, Murphy
3 TEs: Boss (plus any of 2 of the following Meyers, Gordon, Ausberry- it could be any two- none stood out and none hurt themselves)
8 OLs: Vehldeer, Wisniewski, Satele, Carlisle,Barnes, Heyer, Campbell, & Barksdale.

3 Special teams: Condo, Janokowski, Lechler

4 Ss: Branch, Huff, plus 2 of the following Brown, Mitchell, Moore, Boyd, Moore
4 CBs: Routt, Johnson, Van Dyke, plus 1 of any number of guys

that leave 4 players/positions that could be anybody:
a 4th TE, Crumbie on DL has looked solid, a 9th DB or OL you figure has to be one of them.
so far so accurate:

September 3rd, 2011 at 4:21 pm
Something just occurred to me: We sit here and complain every year how the media can’t stand Oakland, and always bags on the Raiders.
And every year, the Raider braintrust pulls crap like this.
What, exactly, is to be gained by withholding the list from the media?
How does this give us even ONE IOTA of competitive advantage?
All it does is make Al look nuts.

September 3rd, 2011 at 4:24 pm
in fairness to Al & Hue every team had a clear 36 hours after final preseason game to make their decisions; even Seattle got an extra 6 hours of sleep since they were the home team last night.
September 3rd, 2011 at 4:24 pm
Al withholds the info because he thinks that way he will have the first chance at looking at other team cuts before they get to look at his, that way, he can sign somebody else if they are better than the ones he cut, if not, then he just resigns whoever he cut. Doesn’t really make sense when you take waivers into account, but in the mind of a 80 somethings year old, that is too deep of thinking.

Of the 54 roster spots, in my opinion 48 are locks. Left to battle it out for the remaining 6 spots are (in the order I value them):
Gordon, Richard TE
Myers, Brandon TE
Porter, Joe DB
Heyer, Stephon OT
Parsons, Alex OL
Schuening, Roy G
Wand, Seth T
Williams, Sam OLB
Davis II, Bruce LB
Rankin, Louis RB
Bennett, MichaelRB
Brock, Kevin TE
Miller, Nick WR
Cumbie, Jamie DT
Hill, Tommie DE
Brodine, Mason DE

Miami’s 53-man roster includes 2 QBs, 6 WRs, 9 DBs, 9 OL, 3 RBs, 3 TEs, 8 DL, 10 LBs, 1 P, 1 K and 1 LS.

Get the cut list out takes a lot long for the Raiders because first they have to let the over head projector warm up. They Al has to go all John Madden all over each slide with his erasable markers. Where do you think Madden learned it?
September 3rd, 2011 at 4:33 pm
I’m sure there was a year 40 years ago, when Al announced his cuts right at the deadline, and he felt he somehow got screwed over by Rozelle, and vowed never to do it again.

Besides, opinions are like a$$holes, everybody has one, and they all stink. Except your own of course.

As much as I like HuJack and I really do like his enthusiasm, he’s becoming the main spin-master. While everything coming out of his mouth is on the positive side of the ledger, we all know that’s not the real world. I’d really like to see him tee off on things he’s seeing that he’s not happy with – like NOT winning.
I don’t know if he has the real power necessary to make coaching changes, if he does he better get rid of Bresnahan before he destroys the defense and our chances at a title and playoff berth this year. There’s a reason Bresnahan was in the UFL and it wasn’t due to any great accomplishments. Bresnahan was terrible when he was here before. Why repeat the process and expect anything different? That’s the definition of insanity! It’s evident that he got the job by default. There has to be someone else on staff that could do a better job – Biekert, Woodson, anybody?
September 3rd, 2011 at 6:06 pm
I fully expect LMurphy & MMitchell to be put on PUP. They’ll miss the 1st 6 weeks of play but that will allow us to keep 2 additional active players.
