Report: Raiders waive CBs Sheppard and McFadden

By Steve Corkran
Saturday, September 3rd, 2011 at 2:09 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Aaron Wilson, who typically is spot on in his league-wide news, reported that the Raiders have released veteran cornerback Lito Sheppard and second-year cornerback Walter McFadden in advance of the 3 p.m. deadline.
The Raiders need to reduce their roster from 80 to 53 through releases, trades, placing players on injured-reserve, whatever.
Sheppard was signed eight days ago and played last night. Coach Hue Jackson is slated to speak in a conference call at 4 p.m. We should gain some insight into what went ino the decisions to cut Sheppard and McFadden at that time.
McFadden was a fifth-round draft pick of the Raiders in 2010. He struggled in a game against the Miami Dolphins last season and didn’t play much the rest of the season.
McFadden struggled in pass coverage and executing his assignments throughout training camp and in Oakland’s four exhibition games.

    When I mentioned that Walter McFadden was on the roster bubble heading into training camp, 9 out of 10 people told me I was crazy.

    Including, our favorite, Priest, who told me he was one of the best corners in camp last year.

  13. Chris Candide Says:

    Get Briggs by swapping our first-rounder next year with the Bears for their second-rounder plus Mike Mitchell assuming he’s healthy. Then sign Meriweather.

    Does this mean Sterling Moore is going to make it? (hopefully)

    Its hard for any experienced corner to look as bad as Walter looked out there. Freddie B. can burn him right now.

    Walter McFadden might have been the worst player on the entire team. Obious to anyone watching.

    Priest may know X’s & O’s but does not have a good record of judging of talent. He has been dead wrong about Jamarcus Russell, Walter McFadden, Jason Campbell, & Darren McFadden just to name a few. I think he’s wrong about Routt too but will let this season prove that decisively.

  26. Plunketthead Says:

    We better save that first round pick next year. We might need it to get Matt Barkley

    REPOST:

    So here’s my list for the final 53 in the order I think they will start:

    QB – JC, KB, TE (only until TP counts against the roster or if a spot is needed now), TP

    RB – DM, MB, TJ

    FB – MR

    WR – JF and DHB (1a and 1b)
    DM and DH (2a and 2b)
    CS and LM (3a and 3b)
    Though with the WRs I think they will all be interchangeable and all will end up playing all the WR positions.

    OL – JV, SW, SS, CC, KB (in that order from LT to RT), back ups not in any order of position, SH, BC, DL, JB and maybe SW

    TE – KB, BM, DA

    DEFENSE

    DL – LH, RS, TK, MS from (LE to RE), back ups in no order, TS, DB, JH, JM and maybe JC.

    LBs – QG, RM, KW (from L to R), back ups in no order, BD, JB, BG

    CBs – SR, CJ, WM, DVD, LS, JP

    SS – TB, MM

    FS – MH, SB

    K – SJ

    P – L

    LS – JC

    52 without counting the maybes, so there’s room for one of them, possibly a position on the OL, DL or CB.

    What ya’ll think?

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

    So WF and LS are out. I wonder who we will keep? Jeremy Ware and Boyd as a CB and not a LB?

  28. Goldie7 Says:

    Could be a mistake waiving Lito. Just saying. He wasn’t given a chance to prove himself.

  29. Chris Candide Says:

    “He has been dead wrong about Jamarcus Russell, Walter McFadden, Jason Campbell, & Darren McFadden”

    Umm…whut? The first two, sure, but JC and DMC?

  30. RaiderRetribution Says:

    Mr. Walter McFadden did have an excellent camp last season, was projected to be the nickel CB, then he injured his hamstring in the final preseason game. When he finally came back he got toasted by Miami. He never recovered. I do not know if he simply lost his swagger and confidence or something else, but he was off to great start. Hopefully, he makes a comeback next year.

  31. NoPassingZone Says:

    We should definitely bring in Brandon Meriweather. First round draft pick in ‘07. Two ProBowls in 4 years. Something doesn’t sound right about this cut…injury maybe?? We should snatch him up before he’s gone. We need all the help we can get in that 2ndary!

  32. EMRaiders Says:

    Ya, JC has been looking more in charge and poised this preseason. I’ve said I’m willing until mid season to make up my mind about him. Though if he starts the first couple games and does not perform I think the writing will be on the wall for him.

  33. RaiderRetribution Says:

    I would not be a bit surprised if Mr. Trent Edwards gets cut. There are some young QBs that the raiders could take a fly on as their 3rd qb, until Mr. Pryor is available.

    ======================================

    Even with HueJax’s obvious dissatisfaction, I can’t see it. Bring a n00b in, have to teach him Saunders’ huge playbook, and then cut him in a month? Just stick with Edwards until Pryor comes back.

  35. SnB offense defense specialteams Says:

    I think the Raiders will be bringing in another CB. The reasons for bringing in Lito Sheppard still exist.

    Also a leasson to you guys placing the future in mid-late round picks.

    Those guys are hit or miss…and absent some actual on the field regular season production….those guys are just a coin toss to stay with the team let alone contribute

  36. EMRaiders Says:

    I think the Baby Hue’s pimp hand last night let him know his fate. That “talk to the hand” gesture after his 2 yd pass to Miller when he needed something like 6 yds I think, I don’t really remember was lame.

  37. RaiderRetribution Says:

    Mr. Sheppard could end up coming back.

    I always say it more 52 + 1 and a half. There is always another roster move or two after the final 53 roster is made.

  38. realtruraider Says:

    Yeah I remember getting tweets from Jerry last season saying Walter Mcfadden was having a really good camp tell his injury.

  39. EMRaiders Says:

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Yes, he used to rant on and on about how he knew DMC would be terrible in the NFL, skinny legs…etc. Was pissed as all hell when we drafted him, said it was a mistake. He says he sees greatness in Jason Campbell when all he’s ever shown anyone is mediocrity at best.
    So true. I LOL when some draftnik talks about how a 6th or 7th-rounder is a “reach” or “risk.” Past the 5th, you’re basically throwing darts.
  43. stablersbeard Says:
    Lito was waived, but they can re-sign him after week one without his contract salary being guaranteed.
    Might just be a smart strategy.
    Agree on Meriweather. Make a run at him.
  50. hellsbells Says:
    Eagels got Barnes from Ravens for 7 th round pick. Solid guy just could not crack that line up. Would have been worth a look.
  51. RaiderRetribution Says:
    long shot that could make the team would be Mr. Bodiford, primarily for special teams coverage, not neccessarily as a back up WR.
    I guess this means DVD and Moore will stick around.
    Let us pray that Routt and Johnson stay healthy.
    I wonder if Ware will be in the next round of cuts.
  56. RaiderRetribution Says:
    Bengals cut Lafloeur QB, probably in anticipation of Palmer coming back, that and dalton is their qb of the future.
    Raiders could take a look at him or possibly Miami’s Devlin if he gets cut, Raiders were interested in him as a UDFA.
    Raiders’ Hue J. did start the game with a 2 TE set against Seattle last night, so I would not be a bit surprised.
    Mr. Gordon had a really good game in the receptions aspect, Mr. Ausberry ahd a good special teams play, Mr. Myers was his usual solid back up TE, made a couple nice blocks and short rec’s; Mr. Boss could probably use another week to get to a 100%.
  80. hellsbells Says:
    Other teams scrubs seem to be better than our scrubs. We are a top heavy team with not a lot of depth on defense.
