NFLN: Pryor to appeal after all
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Sunday, September 4th, 2011 at 10:06 am in Oakland Raiders.
Rookie quarterback Terrelle Pryor will appeal his five-game suspension handed down by commissioner Roger Goodell, according to the NFL Network’s Albert Breer.
No word on when that appeal will take place. The Raiders are currently carrying only two quarterbacks with the release of Trent Edwards Saturday.
Of the Raiders cuts Saturday, one has landed on his feet. Free safety Stevie Brown said on his Twitter account, “goodbye Oakland, hello Carolina.”
Brown played in more than nine games last season so he is not eligible for the practice squad, so the assumption is he is on the 53-man roster.
The Raiders practice at 12:30 p.m. today in Alameda, with media availability to following practice. Practice squad members could trickle back into the facility today, but chances are the Raiders won’t make any announcements until it is complete.

Steve Brown will not be missed.
Converted collegiate LB (who played on some of the worst Michigan defenses ever) who covered like a LB and tackled like a DB.
September 4th, 2011 at 10:08 am
At least Boyd tackles like a LB, and will smack you.
September 4th, 2011 at 10:09 am
Boyd sucks. Pryor’s appeal a mixed bag.
September 4th, 2011 at 10:11 am
Who’s more fragile: Schilens or MM34?
September 4th, 2011 at 10:11 am
I will be glad when the season finally starts.
September 4th, 2011 at 10:13 am
I hope Boyd really takes advantage of this opportunity and seize the backup SS spot.
September 4th, 2011 at 10:14 am
Terrapin,
Tyvon Branch made 100+ tackles, 4 sacks, 1 forced fumble and a pick.
Plus he runs real fast.
He makes mistakes, but unlike too many players on this roster, he shows up and will make a play.
His production warrants his continued play on the field
September 4th, 2011 at 10:14 am
MM34s biggest knock that I have heard is that he looks for the big hit instead of just doing what the situation calls for.
September 4th, 2011 at 10:14 am
You take a helmet to the knee and let’s see how ” Fragile” you are.

Pryor will appeal the five week suspension?
About time.
Players almost always at least get the number of weeks reduced even if they still get the suspension.
Raiders only picked by 3 points at Denver first week say the oddmakers.
September 4th, 2011 at 10:17 am

I expect Jason Campbell will get killed in the Denver game. Denver has a very good defensive line.
+++++++++=
Denver has 2 very good edge rushers in the rookie miller, and dummerville who is returning from injury, we will have our hands full passing no doubt. Both of these guys are sack machines…
Where we can attack denver is on the ground. they lost Ty Warren, and the MLD DJ william to injury in the preseason both will miss the opener…
September 4th, 2011 at 10:18 am
good morning jerry, we already know
you must be having some fun at that convention in oakland
September 4th, 2011 at 10:19 am
Biggest concern for the MNF opener is our tackles.
Veldheer led the NFL in penalties last year for an offensive lineman, and Barnes seems to be of the same ilk.
Both Denver’s edge rushers (Dumervil-Miller) are real fast, and Denver will have about 80K at the game creating some serious crowd noise.
I think that is the only area to where Denver can beat us. False-starts by our tackles creating and long situations, and having to use a silent-count due to crowd noise leaving our tackles vulnerable, and putting hits and forcing fumbles on Soup.
Avoid those perils, and we should be fine.

Sums it up pretty well. Looked good last preseason, but it never translated to the field.

Dont like the Pryor appeal. He said he would sit and he should. I dont like Goodell and dont like what he did in letting him in the draft. Glad we got Pryor but he should have never been let in.
I would hit him with one more game for appealing.

New player? – He will never develop, cut ‘em
Sad. I think you all play too many video games. And sadly I can see what Aaron Foster is talking about with his hatred of Fantasy Footall. Its lead to what I see as ppl rooting for players with instant gratification vs looking at the team and how it develops.
September 4th, 2011 at 10:21 am
Suspension appeal means nothing, wont matter. Feeble attempt thats all. Just gives the NFL another opportunity to screw the Raiders. Any other of the 31 teams, Pryor probably gets the suspension dropped or reduced to a game or two. Raiders, bring out the ram rod and bend over. What else is new.

Nobody seemed to contest my selection.
He isn’t a starter, but I made the pick with the belief that some on the D-line will get nicked, and he will come from a rotational guy, to a spot starter who excels.
I like his game, and can’t knock the Ivy-league education either.

Should not have been suspended at all as the league has no real juristiction over college. Furthermore, the league did not suspend any players for issues that occured during the lockout. If Pryors suspesions happened during this time, this would also be cuase for dismisal…
September 4th, 2011 at 10:31 am

September 4th, 2011 at 10:31 am
Seymour, Kelly, Routt, Wimbley, Jano, Lechler all have to play to their contracts.
That means those 6 should perform like ELITE top tier talent…not just avearge guys.
Too many AVERAGE performances from those 6 above.
They need to dominate
September 4th, 2011 at 10:31 am
If the NFL chooses to stand tough on the issue they will likely lose in arbitration and re-open the can of worms.
It is now to the league’s benefit to lift the suspension and move on and that is just what they will do.
September 4th, 2011 at 10:32 am
MM34 played well in his role last year. Playing close to line on short yardage and goal line. Liked him on the blitz too. Hate to say it but I have never had less confidence in our defense going into our 1st game of season. How important is this 1st game? Go back the last 20 years, when we don’t win the 1st one we ALWAYS have a shty year
September 4th, 2011 at 10:32 am
Hue Jackson needs to put the players on the field that can most help the team win now! Not next year.,..and not 5 years from now…but right now.
Production must trump potential right now.

I picked Al Davis as MUP but it appears Al is not an actual player so I am thinking about my second choice.

September 4th, 2011 at 10:33 am
Betting Pryors appeal is at Al’s blessing. Quite frankly, the Commish overstepped his boundaries imho and the players do have a cause for concern going forward in setting a precedant.
September 4th, 2011 at 10:33 am
At least Pryor waited till pre season was over he can focus on his appeal while the raiders focus on winning. I mean what else does the kid do he’s just sitting waiting for the suspension to end. And why is that couch not suspended for five games he lost his job over the same allegations

September 4th, 2011 at 10:36 am
Also, I chuckle when people say trade this guy or that guy because we can EASILY replace him.
Have you all been paying attention the last 20 years?
Took 20+ years to find a replacement to Todd Christqnsen
Took almost 10 years to replace Garner
Never have really found that safety since 2001…
how long to find a decent left tackle?
You have a player(s) that produce right now….you hold on to them.
Especially those who think replacing Bush would be easy….B.S

On what grounds does the NFL have of suspending him?
He was not an NFL player?
The NFL is not imposing penalties on any playes during the lockout. He should have never been suspended.

If Hue is concerned about Von Miller, all he has to do is pop in the tape of Miller’s very last game at Texas A&M.
He was shut down by 504’s choice on the MUP list.
September 4th, 2011 at 10:43 am
The thing with Pryor is that the commish (right or wrong) believes Pryor INTENTIONALLY did things illegally in college to make himself eligible for the sup draft, thus undermining the process.
His original 5 game suspension would not have made him eligible for the sup draft, so he went into the NCAA’s office and admitted to other things to try to get himself completely ineligible for college, thus making him eligible for the sup draft.
Really a sleezy move on his part, IMO, but owners don’t have a patent on sleezy moves I guess.

You guys haven’t only seen glimspes of this offense. Most of what you saw in the preseason was plain vanilla. John Fox is a helluva of a defensive coach and schemer. One of the best in the biz.
I doubt we will be able to just line up and do whatever we want with them like we did last year.
Not to mention Denver threw a pick 6 on their first play in Denver last year, than fumbled on their 10 yard line on the next play.
This will be a much tougher game than the 2 Denver games last year, but I still think we will prove a tad more talented than them.

The problem is with the NCAA, not the NFL.
The NCAA should start with recruting kids who understand and are willing to play given the “compensation” of just a college degree and room & board.
Kids that think that’s a lousy bargain should not be in college..period.
The NFL should be held accountable for developing a viable professional development league so that kids who have no intereset, or aptitude for college can have a viable way to the pros
September 4th, 2011 at 10:56 am
Mitchell has yet to miss an NFL game, but he has gotten hurt each of his 3 training camps, thus stunting his growth.
Can’t have that happen next year.

Absurd hyprocracy for everyone involved with using colleges as the developmental league for professional sports.
If baseball can do it…and hockey can have a path…so should football and basketball.
Terrell Pryor probably had no business in college to begin with

September 4th, 2011 at 11:00 am
Think about it….
Assuming that most elite football and basketball athletes are on average not the best students (my assumption)….
One would think that the schools with lower admissions standards would have the best teams….
Most of these schools are elite colleges and universities. Truth is, Ohio State, Florida, Michigan, Cal, USC should have teams looking more like Harvard, Cornell and Rice.
But everyone is in on the joke that is college sports
September 4th, 2011 at 11:00 am
Wasting a roster spot on a player who only snaps is a disgrace. Pointing this out is never played.
I would be saying this for any dedicated longsnapper who has no skills to play a real position.

I have the whole NCAA, pay-the players riddle solved.
You need a NFL minor league system, ideally the UFL. Let the UFL take players of any age, so if a HS kid wants to go to the UFL instead of college he can. UFL guys make anywhere from 40K to a million bucks.
Now the tricky part. As it stands now, the NFL can pick up UFL players at any time, they just have to buy them out. You still keep this true for players aged 21 or older. However for those younger, just so elite HS kids don’t just “go” to the UFL for a quick song than go straight to the NFL to the highest bidder, make those under 21 have to wait for the next years sup draft. Than if a team wants a 19 year old phenom, he is drafted and not sold to the Jerry Jones’ of the world.
Problem-solved.
September 4th, 2011 at 11:01 am
I’m glad Pryor is appealing his suspension, Goodell didn’t have any right suspending him unless the NFL is saying that the NCAA is now their farm league. Tressel gets a job with the Colts and that’s okay but Pryor has to sit out 5 games?

Or everyone just admit to the gross hyprocracy and leave kids like Pryor alone…kids who never had an interest in college and a university that probably only half cared if he got an education to begin with
Admit its a joke
True college sports are at the D2, D3 and Ivy League…levels where there is no expectation of pro ball.
But the delusional American public won’t give them the time of day.
Big freekn joke.
Pryor should not be suspended at all.
September 4th, 2011 at 11:04 am
There is rules to whether players are eligible for the sup draft or not.
There is no such rules for fired NCAA coaches.
Pryor undermined the rules, and Tressel had no rules to undermine.
Right, wrong or indifferent, the two situations are mutually exclusive.

With a professional developmental league, those kids that have no business in college have a path of least resistance and can get PAID
The colleges should restore their admissions standards to reflect the mission of their schools.
Kids who can play ball, but want to go to school too, can still go and play and develop. But all the nonsense about money etc..is swept aside.

NFL will refuse to even hear the appeal based on Pryor not filing it on time.
Believe Pryor had 72 hour window to file once he signed and appeared on the roster.
That’s a little murky and open to interpretation, but Goodell and Co. will refuse on that basis. After that the NFLPA would have to step in.
From listening to Pryor’s earlier comments about not appealing and just being happy he was given an opportunity to enter the supplemental, I get the feeling the snake Rosenhaus was pleading with league officials for Pryor’s supp eligibility and was advised they’d allow it but a suspension would be inevitable. Pryor was probably glad to know he wouldn’t have to go a full year without getting the green, and eagerly agreed to Rosenhaus’s ‘negotiations’ with the league office on his behalf.
Just speculation, but how else can you explain Pryor not appealing immediately ?

R8dercain,
That kid should not be at Michigan because he can play ball.
He should be at a less academically rigorous school….if he is truly interested in pursuing an education and not concerned about getting paid for his college football performance.
If Michigan is not admitting 2.1 GPA students anywhere else, they shouldn’t be doing it because the kid will pack a 100,000 seat stadium.
Kid comes in there ill-prepared with no money and is expected to roll in an atmosphere of privilege….
Set up a minor league system…have the kid with the 2.1 go to junior college…and come apply after a year or two there

Before he’s even on the roster.
I’m predicting that just when everyone is speculating about a trade for defensive help, Al Davis does the unthinkable and looks to replace the ‘unquestioned starter’ JaJason.
Once Carson shows up in Cincy demanding his 11 million, there’s going to be a quick exit – and Palmer will be Oakland bound. Might even see a straight trade for JaJason with Boeller holding down the fort til Palmer can step in.
Don’t believe Palmer is sitting out a year or retiring and there’s no other owner that’s going to turn things upside down so close to the start of the season besides the Old Man.
Palmer is probably done, and I think he was always overrated – but he’d still be an improvement over JaJason.

The reason that it is difficult to establish an NFL minor league is the great potential for a player to get hurt and the large size of the rosters. NFL had the Europe league until that became a burden. It is not a cost effective measure for them to establish it especially when they have the NCAA for free and their CBA allows them to do unconstitutional things such as establish a salary cap put age restrictions on entering the league and the draft itself

Terrelle Pryor may have notified the league about his intention to appeal his suspension, there remains doubt about whether it will happen.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that Pryor’s lawyer David Cornwell filed a letter to appeal two weeks ago without talking to Pryor, Pryor’s agent, or the NFLPA. Furthermore, Cornwell’s letter reportedly just reserves the right to appeal.
In the meantime, Cornwell has sadly suffered a stroke. He hasn’t spoken with Pryor about the decision to appeal. Pryor hasn’t granted his approval for any appeal to move forward.
Pryor told the NFL he wouldn’t appeal the suspension when he was allowed to be drafted.
“The feeling is Cornwell won’t proceed without Pryor’s consent, though some players around the leauge would like to see an appeal,” Schefter reports.
In short: This is a mess, with a lot of conflicting interests from Pryor to Cornwell to the NFLPA.

If u don’t think soldiers get paid enough take that up with the government. Pryor broke a rule that everyone breaks, its the equivalent of jaywalking, not coming to a complete stop at a stop sign, or running that red light a 3:30 am because it takes forever to change. What he did hurts no one and why its against the rules is a mystery to everyone. In fact its the very essence of what this country’s economy was built on, capitalism. He leveraged his fame, athletic accomplishments, and merchandise against the monetary value he could get for it.

Al has one question. Can Carson still chunk the long ball?
September 4th, 2011 at 12:23 pm
Pryor got suspended for deliberately embellishing his collegiate infractions to increase his chances at NFL eligibility. Didn’t have anything to do with the actual infractions. He tried to put on a dog and pony show for the league’s benefit. He was pulling Goodell’s chain and got called on it.
September 4th, 2011 at 12:26 pm
So what is the actual Pryor infraction, as it relates to the NFL?
Also was the suspension imposed before or after the lockout?
September 4th, 2011 at 12:29 pm
‘Sup fellas.
Just FYI…The lil misses just called DirecTV to complain about the Sunday ticket deal. We were sitting here watching Pawn Stars and the commercial came on for free Sunday Ticket for new subscribers and it set her off. She called and said she didn’t think it was fair that we’d had it for 14 years now and new subs got it for free.
The CSR knocked 20 bucks a month, or basically $120 off the price of our Sunday ticket.
It ain’t free, but it works for me.
I’ve heard some people complain that DirecTV wouldn’t work with them. Others have said they were offered free HBO or PPV movie credits to offset the price of the Sunday Ticket. I don’t know. It’s worth a shot.

Wrong he didn’t deliberately embellishments anything. He told the truth, he was suspended for “undermining the draft process” by leaving school and trying to enter the supplemental draft. It was the NFL’s position that he still could have returned to play at OSU and the supplemtal draft OS only for those whose eligibility had changed since the draft. Though he had been ruled ineligible by the university in a letter for his cooperation with the investigation. It really is a suspension that has no grounds and clearly Goodell was extending the suspension from the NCAA to the NFL as a way of sending a message that they will not be used as a shelter for those whom are guilty of NCAA infractions. A message that he chose only to send when a black QB was involved and not when a white coach was hired. Heard he is looking into the vest hiring so lets see if a 5 game suspension is handed down to him.

Thec,
Pryor broke rules he knew he had to follow going in. He was a poor example of a leader of his team. Although I agree that he SHOULD NOT have to be suspended in the NFL…let’s not excuse bad behavior.
Pryor wasn’t bending the rules to get a meal…he was bending the rules to get some sort of self-satisfaction. It wasn’t right and every young person aspiring to be a leader of a college football team needs understand that.
Not sweep it under the rug as another transgression of an agrieved party.

Lets not make this a white and black thing. A kid undermined the system. A man got fired from his job. Lots of coaches get fired and hired every year. They get fired for a lot of diffrent things. Pryor was not suspend because he is a black player.
September 4th, 2011 at 12:44 pm
The only name I saw on the list that disapointed me was Sterling Moore. I thought that guy had played his way onto the roster. I thought he was physical and really made plays on the ball. I thought he looked better than Joe Porter.
I had hoped Trent Edwards would unseat Kyle Boller. But, he seemed to regress game by game. He made that nice TD toss to Ausberry. Nice throw, even better catch. He looked good vs Ariz, but awful vs NO and Sea.
I was not surprised to see Loper cut. After watching him struggle vs Seattle’s backups I was more surprised that he was ever even considered potential starting material. He was hot, steaming garbage Fri night.
I know nothing has been announced yet, but this team has to scouring the waiver wire for some LB and CB depth. Or a trade in the works. Something. Anything.
I think the defensive struggles have been a lil overexaggerated in here, but the lack of quality depth is alarming. The second and third string defense has been embarrasing. Poor tackling, blown coverages. Awful.
I think with a healthy Seymour and CJ37 on the field, we’ll see a much better performance come Monday Night.

Pryor broke the rules. That is not in dispute. As a college athlete you can’t accept the gifts he received. You just cant.
THe circumstances around it…the NCAA and the hyprocrisy of the American people around “amateur” athletics is a separate issue.
Pryor was the QB and LEADER of that team. That means LEADER on and OFF the field…not just when its convenient.
He broke the rules and paid the price.
However, he should not be suspended by the NFL. THat’s ridiculous

I never said lets excuse the infractions, however my point is that the NFL had ZERO jurisdiction in this matter. Also if the suspension was handed during the lockout Godell is not suspending players for any transsgressions that happened during the lockout…

Rosenhaus, smelling a ton of money to be made, approached the NFL before the Ohio State suspension was even announced. Rosenhaus played up the infractions, including some that eventually were dismissed, in order to burn the bridge back to OSU and get the kid into the draft. Goodell didn’t like the way it played out and felt they were gaming the system. He of course used the OSU suspension as a pretext, but the real issue was the way Rosenhaus attempted to secure Pryor’s eligibility in the supplemental draft.

Severeraiderz,
There is a racial element to be sure.
However, the bar is very low for all athletes.
Big Ben should have gone to jail like Vick did. No question.
Athletes are held to no standard of behavior. And the young kids, most of whom won’t sniff the pros, emulate them and try to follow their footsteps.
Acting like an athlete in regular society gets you nowhere.
But again the hypocrisy. Those Pittsburgh fans (Middle America) love cheering on Big Ben and the rest of that team damm the consequences.

Earlier you were speaking from a perspective as if you had some extra intel or knowledge about the situation.
In any of your above statements you have yet to clearly illucidate what NFL policy was violated.

I still do not see where the violation.
Does the NFL have rules on the books to handle this situation?
It appears that rosen just exercised a loop hole.
The NFL is open for litigation…
—————
And here is how the battle will take place:
The NFL and its conspirators will try to turn down Pryors suspension because it is another beat down of Al Davis.
But Al and his litigious self and his bevy of lawyers will find a way to make the NFLs’ ruling wrong, out of bounds, unconstitutional, so to speak. And they will find a hole, you can bank on it.
When all this starts to surface in a week or less, Pryors’ suspension will be put on hold and he will now occupy a roster spot.
In the mean time, Al and his legal team continue to fight the NFL, maybe tossing out the idea Al Davis and the Raiders may even sue the NFL over this. And Al and his lawyers will find a way. Gauranteed.
With the NFLs’ reputation already tarnished because of the lockout, they toss the suspension into the trash knowing Al won’t settle for anything less.
What this does to future violations and NCAA rules is anyones guess, but there will be a ‘Pryor’ rule of some kind so the NFL does not have to face this type of embarrassment again.
Another Al Davis vicory in the courts.
September 4th, 2011 at 1:42 pm
Makes sense now that the NFL is feeling heat to “suspend” Tressel from advising the Colts during the season. Pryor’s got a much better chance of getting the suspension overturned.
And, oh yeah, there’s only 2 QBs on the roster. Raiders might have encouraged Pryor to appeal or knew an appeal was coming. Either way they decided to keep only 2 QBs.
