Practice notes, practice squad additions, observations

By Steve Corkran
Sunday, September 4th, 2011 at 1:16 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Just returned from watching practice and got my first look at the 53-man roster. Already, it looks different than the team that was settled upon last night.
The Raiders cut offensive lineman Seth Wand and replaced him on the active roster with veteran linebacker Ricky Brown.
Brown was cut by the New England Patriots and quickly re-signed with the only NFL team he has known his five seasons. For now, he figures to be a backup.

*The Raiders moved quick to sign the following eight players to their practice squad: Fullback Manase Tonga, wide receiver Eddie McGee, offensive lineman Alex Parsons, tight end Kevin Brock, defensive end Mason Brodine, defensive tackle Jamie Cumbie, linebacker Jeremy Leman and cornerbacks Sterling Moore.
All eight players were cut by the Raiders on Saturday and cleared waivers. The Raiders are at full capacity for their practice squad.

*Safety Stevie Brown was cut by the Raiders at the end of training camp last year, but he was re-signed one day later. Not this time.
Brown was cut Saturday, but he signed with the Carolina Panthers and is on their 53-man roster.

*Running back Taiwan Jones switched from No. 36 to No. 22, cornerback DeMarcus Van Dyke went from No. 38 to No. 23 and safety Jerome Boyd is wearing No. 30 again after sporting No. 40 during camp.

*Receiver Chaz Schilens is practicing with the rest of his teammates for the first time since he suffered an undisclosed injury against the Arizona Cardinals on Aug. 11.
At this rate, it would seem likely that he will be healthy enough to play against the Denver Broncos on Sept. 12.
The Raiders aren’t required to disclose the nature of players’ injuries until Thursday. The disclosure day typically is the Wednesday before a game. However, since the Raiders are playing on Monday night, they get an extra day to play the guess-the-injury game.

*Still no sign of receiver Louis Murphy and safety Mike Mitchell. This likely means that they won’t be available for the Broncos game.
Coach Hue Jackson already has said that Murphy won’t play in that game. He has been far less definitive in terms of Mitchell’s status.

*Defensive tackle Richard Seymour is back at practice with the rest of his teammates. He reportedly had a hamstring issue the past couple of weeks. He missed Oakland’s final two exhibition games and several days of practice before today.
Cornerback Chris Johnson also looked fine during practice, and he remains on pace to play against the Broncos.

*Nick Miller was the lone guy returning punts in practice. That portends his handling that role against the Broncos, though there’s still time for Jackson to take a longer look at Denarius Moore and Jacoby Ford in practice the rest of this week.

Pryor needs to take his medicine or risk sabotaging his already dicey reputation. I don’t think he fights anything unless he’s put up to it. In which case, the kid is being used. What else is new.

    ++++++++++
So he should take his medicine…lol

Reputations can be repaired, see mike vick.

Earlier you were speaking from a perspective as if you had some extra intel or knowledge about the situation.

In any of your above statements you have yet to clearly illucidate what NFL policy was violated.

I still do not see where the violation.
Does the NFL have rules on the books to handle this situation?
It appears that rosen just exercised a loop hole.

The NFL is open for litigation…

    —————

And here is how the battle will take place:

The NFL and its conspirators will try to turn down Pryors suspension because it is another beat down of Al Davis.

But Al and his litigious self and his bevy of lawyers will find a way to make the NFLs’ ruling wrong, out of bounds, unconstitutional, so to speak. And they will find a hole, you can bank on it.

When all this starts to surface in a week or less, Pryors’ suspension will be put on hold and he will now occupy a roster spot.

In the mean time, Al and his legal team continue to fight the NFL, maybe tossing out the idea Al Davis and the Raiders may even sue the NFL over this. And Al and his lawyers will find a way. Gauranteed.

With the NFLs’ reputation already tarnished because of the lockout, they toss the suspension into the trash knowing Al won’t settle for anything less.

What this does to future violations and NCAA rules is anyones guess, but there will be a ‘Pryor’ rule of some kind so the NFL does not have to face this type of embarrassment again.

Another Al Davis vicory in the courts.

His Lawyer filed for the right to appeal…Very smart move as the NFL has ZERO grounds to suspend him.
He did not violate any NFL policy as he was not a member of the NFLPA…Moreover, if i am not mistaken his suspension whould have had to happen after there was an NFLPA formed….Bottom line is the NFL is now open for litigation…

  7. SnB offense defense specialteams Says:

    Guys,

The Pryor thing is done. Regardless of appeal, hopefully he is not playing QB this year. otherwise something went wrong.

Happy to see Schilens back on the field. Let’s hope he can stay that way. First time we’ve had him to start the season.

Surprised the Raiders stood pat with the cornerbacks. Absolutely NO DEPTH back there. DVD is not ready yet for prime time.

Pleased with the Ricky Brown signing. How many O-Lineman is this team carrying?

Seem real thin at some positions and carrying luxurious amounts in others

  10. Buckeyeraider Says:

Don’t really like to hear that Nick Miller is still going to be returning punts once the season starts. Especially after watching him boot that KO return vs Sea. His fumble vs KC really kept KC in that game last year in Oakland, forcing Jacoby Fords late game heroics.

I was really hoping Taiwan Jones would seize that role. He did it in college. He returned both punts and Kickoffs.

Returning punts seemed to be one way to get that exciting playmaker on the field. Until Dmac pulls a hammy or reaggravates his lingering turf toe, I don’t see T Jones getting THAT many carries behind McFadden and Bush.

The way that guy can juke and move, that acceleration and flat out speed to burn…seems to me would make a lethal punt returner. Especially with the new rules potentially limiting Jacoby Ford’s impact on Kick returns.

Nope. Sounds like Nick Miller it is. Kind of a bummer.

Big Ben gets accused of rape three times and uses the off duty cops he employs as security to intimidate his accuser and to tamper with the crime scene…..4 games.

Pryor “undermines draft process” 5 games

Don’t talk to me about black and white
    ________________________________________________

You make a great argument with Ben. And had Pryor done something similar to what Ben had done it would be interesting to see what they would have done to him.
Goodell simply passed the buck and went with what he would have gotten at the college level and never gave a thought to what the coach was doing. I just don’t see where the racism comes in to play.

  28. TheGeneral Says:

  29. SnB offense defense specialteams Says:

    DMN,

The racism, or double standard, is that people looked the other way with Big Ben…even though we all knew what really happened and the worst he gets is 4 games from the commissioner…whereas if the young lady had decided to press charges…Big Ben would have been in the Big House for a couple of years…..like Vick had to go to jail for his conviction.

THe Commissioner should have come with a more “appropriate” suspension….and with PRyor getting 5 games for a tatoo…is ridiculous

  30. FarEastRaider Says:

    @ 10.Buckeyeraider, agreed!

Miller hasn’t shown any playmaking ability as a returner, in fact quite the opposite with that boot. I’d MUCH rather see Ford, Moore, or T.Jones handle that role. Hells yes! And i don’t see how we need Miller as a WR either with what we have, even with Murph out. I’d rather see Ausberry line up wide or flex DMac out any day! Tired of seeing Miller run 7 yard routes on 3 and 10.

  31. SnB offense defense specialteams Says:

    SNB

Totally agree that Big Ben should have taken a fall. But the argument was that the coach came right into the league without a problem and Pryor has a 5 game suspension. And it was made out to be a black and white thing.
The league simply enforced the suspension he got in college. Which I don’t agree with.
But to now compare it to what Ben got doesn’t make any since. Punishment doesn’t fit the crime in either case. But the NFL didn’t set Pryor’s punishment But just enforced it.

If anybody does not believe the NFL is out to get Al Davis and the Raiders, here is a little hint.

Raiders at seattle was the last game of the preseason. All other teams had played the day before. So when all the cuts are down to 53 are due, the Raiders are just getting home from seattle. What kind of BS is that?

seattle didn’t have to suffer that, besides, the NFL doesnt care for latte sippin yuppies from seattle anyway, but makin the Raiders travel? Last game shoulda been the jets vs the giants. No wonder the Raiders kept miller and let lito go. They were tired.

    ———————–

then everyone off this team no one did anything this preseason. Everyone played like crap ( defense ) lets guve it a couole games inti the season.
    ————————————–
How about this then.. Miller has shown nothing for two full seasons and now he gets a third!
Miller’s return style consists of catching the ball and running straight for the nearest defender.
Occasionally he mixes things up with a fumble.
He’ll never be a true wideout (too small) and will NEVER be “our Wes Welker”
So why do we keep him around?
Might as well give him a skirt and pom poms.
    He already has the hair.

My bad. I shoulda known, great minds think alike. But Hagan not on the charts is pure foolishness.

  115. Hagar the Horrible Says:

Usually or rather sometimes, depending on the team and the circumstances involved, the best punt returner or kickoff returner isn’t used because the threat of injury is always there and it’s not worth the risk involved. I remember Tim Brown, when he always use to return punts, but as his value increased we used him less and less. Ya, occassionally he ran some back, but usually he was too valuable to risk. Tim brown, Mr Raider, Mr future Hall of Famer.

  116. TerrapinRaider Says:

Thats why I’m wondering how many are allowed to suit up game day. He may be on the team but probably won’t suit up. Nick Miller interestingly has a better chance at suiting up because he’s doing KOR/PR.
