Practice notes, practice squad additions, observations

By Steve Corkran
Sunday, September 4th, 2011 at 1:16 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Just returned from watching practice and got my first look at the 53-man roster. Already, it looks different than the team that was settled upon last night.
The Raiders cut offensive lineman Seth Wand and replaced him on the active roster with veteran linebacker Ricky Brown.
Brown was cut by the New England Patriots and quickly re-signed with the only NFL team he has known his five seasons. For now, he figures to be a backup.

*The Raiders moved quick to sign the following eight players to their practice squad: Fullback Manase Tonga, wide receiver Eddie McGee, offensive lineman Alex Parsons, tight end Kevin Brock, defensive end Mason Brodine, defensive tackle Jamie Cumbie, linebacker Jeremy Leman and cornerbacks Sterling Moore.
All eight players were cut by the Raiders on Saturday and cleared waivers. The Raiders are at full capacity for their practice squad.

*Safety Stevie Brown was cut by the Raiders at the end of training camp last year, but he was re-signed one day later. Not this time.
Brown was cut Saturday, but he signed with the Carolina Panthers and is on their 53-man roster.

*Running back Taiwan Jones switched from No. 36 to No. 22, cornerback DeMarcus Van Dyke went from No. 38 to No. 23 and safety Jerome Boyd is wearing No. 30 again after sporting No. 40 during camp.

*Receiver Chaz Schilens is practicing with the rest of his teammates for the first time since he suffered an undisclosed injury against the Arizona Cardinals on Aug. 11.
At this rate, it would seem likely that he will be healthy enough to play against the Denver Broncos on Sept. 12.
The Raiders aren’t required to disclose the nature of players’ injuries until Thursday. The disclosure day typically is the Wednesday before a game. However, since the Raiders are playing on Monday night, they get an extra day to play the guess-the-injury game.

*Still no sign of receiver Louis Murphy and safety Mike Mitchell. This likely means that they won’t be available for the Broncos game.
Coach Hue Jackson already has said that Murphy won’t play in that game. He has been far less definitive in terms of Mitchell’s status.

*Defensive tackle Richard Seymour is back at practice with the rest of his teammates. He reportedly had a hamstring issue the past couple of weeks. He missed Oakland’s final two exhibition games and several days of practice before today.
Cornerback Chris Johnson also looked fine during practice, and he remains on pace to play against the Broncos.

*Nick Miller was the lone guy returning punts in practice. That portends his handling that role against the Broncos, though there’s still time for Jackson to take a longer look at Denarius Moore and Jacoby Ford in practice the rest of this week.

    Great signing of Brown.

I do not like the idea of putting the starters in jeopardy however, based on his performance miller gets the job. He will be on a short leash…Wouldn’t suprise me if he still gets cut…

I saw that one earlier. It Would have been a nice pickup the article did not say who else put in a claim…..

I would hope we go shopping on the practice squads on some of the deeper NFL defensive teams…

As teams try to hid players, a quality young LB can be had for a sandwhich…

So the NFL has to enforce NCAA rules or punishments? Whos Goodell sleeping with on this? Since when does the NFL carry over on NCAA punishments? What a crock. The NFL is just using this as a smokescreen to divert attention from the stain they suffered as a result of the lockout.

    EM,

not too bad a prediction list. I can’t see us beating the Texans (too good of passing team + Foster) or the Vikings (we suck vs top RBs).

I’m glad you were realistic not having us start 4-1 :)

Al Davis and his court of wise men would not have had Pryor appeal unless they saw a sure thing way of getting it over turned. Brilliant.

I for one am impressed. I hope Davis and his sattelite of lawyers rakes the NFL over the coals for this.

The NFL has for ever tried to conspire and fck with Al and time and again he’s had to call their BS.

Maybe Al saw this long before he drafted Pryor and figured this was another opportunity for him. The man is a shark.

If anybody does not believe the NFL is out to get Al Davis and the Raiders, here is a little hint.

Raiders at seattle was the last game of the preseason. All other teams had played the day before. So when all the cuts are down to 53 are due, the Raiders are just getting home from seattle. What kind of BS is that?

seattle didn’t have to suffer that, besides, the NFL doesnt care for latte sippin yuppies from seattle anyway, but makin the Raiders travel? Last game shoulda been the jets vs the giants. No wonder the Raiders kept miller and let lito go. They were tired.
