RB Bennett waived, S Giordano re-signed; WR Hagan dinged
By Steve Corkran
Monday, September 5th, 2011 at 12:57 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Just returned from a news conference with coach Hue Jackson and player availability in the locker room.
During that time, we learned that the Raiders waived running back Michael Bennett and re-signed veteran safety Matt Giordano.
Jackson said the Raiders arrived at the decisions after studying the roster further.
In other news, wide receiver Derek Hagan has what Jackson described as a “ding.” Hagan said he got hurt in practice Sunday but that he is full go for the Denver Broncos game Monday night.
More later. Off to transcribe and write.

It makes sense that Bennett was let go. We don’t need FIVE halfbacks.

Tonga is terrible.
I didn’t see ONE play from him that says he should be on our roster.
Reece is terrible too, but I don’t see Tonga as an upgrade at all.
FB is still a HUGE hole on this team.

Exactly.
At least Reece provides the offense with another weapon out of the backfield.
They don’t use FB very often in short yardage running situations anyway. If they’re going to do that they should just put Houston back there.
September 5th, 2011 at 1:07 pm
Like i was saying all last week if the org beleives tonga adds value o the offense they will keep him on board…
For all of you that jumped on the hagan bandwagon this is him, part of his history injuries. Not saying he is anything like fools gold however, looking at his body of work injuries is a concern…

Id rather put Gordon at FB in short yardage than Houston. He is faster, a rugged blocker, and gives Hue the ability to run play action and throw him a pass

Agreed…The NFL has morphed over the last decade…
FB’s have gone the way of dino…
If we look at the style of offense the coaches have devised they dont really have a need for a true FB…

Reece is a beast in the passing game and a does well enough in the running game to have us at #2 in the league last year. He is changing the way the FB position is looked at. Its not quite what Ditka did for TEs but it is a shift nonetheless.

The general manager of the Oakland Raider values speed over the ability to catch the ball in traffic and the ability to gain yards after the catch. Hagan doesn’t fit into his system.
************************
Just consider him the Fred Biletnikoff of this century. Freddy B wasn’t fast, smoked like a chimney, ran the most precise routes you’d ever see and rarely dropped a ball that was within 3 feet of his hands/body. Of course, he was lathered head to toe with Stick-um but in the day, that was OK. After FreddyB touched the ball is was out of service for 15 minutes while they tried to clean all the Stick-um off of it. The only other Stick-um freak, also a Raider great was Lester the Molester Hayes. He could catch a ball without hands. All it had to do was hit his body and it would just stick there.

Key to beating Denver Monday Night:
Heavy doses of Bush & DMAC between the tackles. Do not give up on the run no matter how stout Denver’s Defense appears to be. Nobody can stop 4 Qtrs of Bush/Mcfadden. Our running game was the key factor in every game we won last year. The times we lost were when Cable flinched and abondoned the running game early when it was met with early resistance.
Denver, with Dumervil and Von Miller have the ouside pretty well locked down. We need to attack the soft underbelly, weakened by injuries.

I admire the willingness of the Raider fan to deconstruct things that are actually working and prop up things that are unproven

I think Meyers and Gordon are MUCH better blockers than Reece, and since it all starts with DMac and Bush, I’d prefer them on the field.

Tonga is not a “real FB”.
They are trying to develop him into one the same way the stashed Reece on the PS and tried to turn him into a FB.
Tonga is still a work in progress.
FAR from an Oren O’Neal.

September 5th, 2011 at 1:41 pm
Method,
Reece out of the backfield gave them 25 receptions and 3 TDs.
That was better than starting wide receivers.
Until a receiver(s) or two truly step up and “put it on tape” …the production that Reeece provided is still necessary.
Sure, a pure blocking back would be great…but for a team with production problems…even a gadget player like Reece provides near-term value
September 5th, 2011 at 1:41 pm
SnB…Damn just short yardage…we talking entire game. Reece not good enough. Tonga is better suited to block play after play. All these other mfkers on here know didley

Reece had 1 less receptions and 33 yards less then DHB and 2 more touch downs from the full back position. Who more valuable?
September 5th, 2011 at 1:43 pm
Reece is a part-time FB, used mostly for passing plays.
The team should have the other half of the FB tandem for short-yardage situations, I-formation runs, goal-line blocking.

Marcel Reece is a matchup problem to every defense once we get him matched up with a linebacker. He loses his some of his advantage in the redzone and on short yardage situations. I think on 3rd and 1 we put in Gordon at Fb or B.Campbell in there
Tonga is still on the P.S so hes still an option if Hue feels Reece isnt his guy for the Power Blocking scheme

Hagan is a more talented receiver than anyone we have. He seems to be the definition of “professional wide receiver”. He catches anything thrown at him, knows how to use his body, runs precise routes and can make things happen after the catch. Who cares about 40 times, what did Timmy run? Hagan is a true possession receiver.
Yeah, ford made some plays last year, albeit circus act plays that only happen once and awhile. The others were off of reverses, that is not a possession receiver. You need one of those on the field.
But so what, let them play who they play and we can address the situation later.

Our TEs and Reece will be the key to the game on Monday night. Champ Bailey will do a good enough job on Jacoby, im not sold on DHB being a consistent threat this early in the year, and im sure Denver will put 8 or 9 in the box. Von Miller and Elvis are both LBs that are better suited rushing the passer and whom struggle in pass coverage, Rahim Moore is a ballhawking safety but he is over aggressive and bites on double moves and his size causes struggles against TE’s. Our TEs should be able to get open against their LBs and safeties and quick swing passes to reece and the other backs should remove those extra defenders from the box, and screen passes will slow down the pass rush. By the 2nd quarter we can start pounding the rock and free up the play action for later on.

it’s unfortunate that some of you are SERIOUS when considering sticking B. Campbell or a rookie TE at FB on important short-yardage plays.
This isn’t Madden. Despite a guy’s size, he still has to know how to read a defense, find the correct guy to block, take the right angle, or move to a second level if necessary.

Most teams run out of singleback formations so I don’t see why its essential for him to be a blocker first…if anything a fullback that almost exclusively blocks tips the defense to whether its a running play. Reece is a good enough blocker to get the job done and he’s getting better

If Hue is half the coach we hope he is, it wont do any good to stuff the box on us. We have far too many playmakers who can catch the short pass.
We need to play to our strengths. Running the ball and the short pass.
September 5th, 2011 at 2:04 pm
Boss said on Twitter earlier this weekend that he was playing in the Denver game and it should be no big deal. I think they are choosing to be safe with him and we’ll see him Monday night. At least I hope so anyways, if he does I bet money he scores a TD.

He converted to FB right out of Washington, he was drafted by I believe Miami as a FB prospect exclusively

Tonga is terrible.
I didn’t see ONE play from him that says he should be on our roster.
Reece is terrible too, but I don’t see Tonga as an upgrade at all.
FB is still a HUGE hole on this team.

To you guys who wanna bash on Reece go to Raiders dot com and watch his interview from today. He said that what we are about to see this season is something that has never been seen before and it’s going to be epic! I bet Hue was playing opossum this preseason and he has all kinds of tricks up his sleeve.
How can you bash Reece when all he has done for us is make plays, he’s not the best blocking football in the league but this guy is clutch… he can catch and run so the opposing D has to account for him as a play maker. Not very many other teams in the league have a FB like him, and that’s a good thing for us.

Ok, maybe I’ll take Severze’s angle and simply say that Reece still has some developing to do in the blocking department.
I already said he was a beast in the passing game.
Certainly not replaceable by Tonga.
September 5th, 2011 at 2:11 pm
Severe…i disagree with that fully! Many teams still doing I formation and damn other teams…what about the Raiders?

Groves – who do we have as a replacement?
Do we know if the team has tried to replace him?
Reece is a good football player and has contributed.
Kelly from what I understand is potentially questionable.
Carlisle, and barnes are playing out of need, as the youngsters were injuried or not ready.
The coaches see the guys in practice daily and in games, i trust the judgement…

Ok …
So Tonga’s first play in the last game was the first play of the 2nd half.
A sweep to the right where he never gets back to the LOS and goes damn near to the sidelines.
RB cut underneath him 3 gaps ago.
But I’ll keep watching.
September 5th, 2011 at 2:14 pm
Man shut up! Ill bash Reece all I want. He sucks as a blocker and he is a gimmick pplayer!
September 5th, 2011 at 2:19 pm
By some of your logic we should just line up 3 te or run out of jumbo sets all thoughreece makes plays and is good enough in the blocking game to be effective. Tonga is not a great blocker by any stretch, struggles with both hand and feet placement, he is pretty good in the screen game though. Reece is a threat that must be accounted for on every play because he can leak out and wreak havoc. Reece adds much more to the passing game than Tonga does to the running game

Matt Giordano is just insurance for Mitchell’s injury. Once Mitchell is healthy they’ll likely cut Giordano and sign Sheppard again.
^^^^^^^^
Those DB’s need a vet like Sheppard to help them! After Routt and CJ, the CB’s are not good.

CHUCK B is on my chit watch list this year!
Next on my chit watch list is DHB!!
September 5th, 2011 at 2:28 pm
CHUCK B doesn’t even know how to utilize his D-Line rotation yet.
At least Marshall had it under control and knew what he had and what he didn’t have and how to use his talent on defense the right way!
September 5th, 2011 at 7:56 pm
I don’t have confidence on breshnehan either… I wouldn’t be surprised if the raider dline is. Bottom five in NFL for sacks And rushing yards allowed..
September 5th, 2011 at 8:59 pm
Maybe they kept Porter because they wanted to sneak Smoore into the practice squad, sign a veteran CB after week 1, then cut Porter.
Or its Porter the Gunner and they’ll cut Giordano when Mitchell returns then sign another CB.
And the theory nobody wants to hear, Its Huff the Nickel and Dimer.
September 6th, 2011 at 8:47 am
Have you all noticed that Mitchell seems to be perpetually injured?
I like the guy but these chronically injured players have to go.
We need reliable players.
