RB Bennett waived, S Giordano re-signed; WR Hagan dinged

Just returned from a news conference with coach Hue Jackson and player availability in the locker room.
During that time, we learned that the Raiders waived running back Michael Bennett and re-signed veteran safety Matt Giordano.
Jackson said the Raiders arrived at the decisions after studying the roster further.
In other news, wide receiver Derek Hagan has what Jackson described as a “ding.” Hagan said he got hurt in practice Sunday but that he is full go for the Denver Broncos game Monday night.
More later. Off to transcribe and write.

It makes sense that Bennett was let go. We don’t need FIVE halfbacks.

  • J Hill

    Tonga is terrible.

I didn’t see ONE play from him that says he should be on our roster.

Reece is terrible too, but I don’t see Tonga as an upgrade at all.

FB is still a HUGE hole on this team.

  • DonManoukiansNeighbor

    Good news!

Full backs are being faded out accross the league.

    Exactly.

At least Reece provides the offense with another weapon out of the backfield.

They don’t use FB very often in short yardage running situations anyway. If they’re going to do that they should just put Houston back there.

  • Thec07

Like i was saying all last week if the org beleives tonga adds value o the offense they will keep him on board…

For all of you that jumped on the hagan bandwagon this is him, part of his history injuries. Not saying he is anything like fools gold however, looking at his body of work injuries is a concern…

  • DonManoukiansNeighbor

Put Houston back there on passing downs.

Believe me, if Gradkowski were still on our depth chart, every DC we face this year would be taking note of it and tweaking their defense to prepare for the possibility of him being subbed in.

Thats pushing it a little too far, isnt it?

  • J Hill

    I didn’t see that, Thec.

I’ll take your word for it though.

So Tonga made 1 good block this preseason?

    Still not good enough, imo.

  • REALLIONAIREB

why we haventgiv Will Allen a look cb 4rm da dolphins #imjuztsayin

  • severeraiderz

Id rather put Gordon at FB in short yardage than Houston. He is faster, a rugged blocker, and gives Hue the ability to run play action and throw him a pass

  • Thec07

    ++++++++

Agreed…The NFL has morphed over the last decade…
FB’s have gone the way of dino…

If we look at the style of offense the coaches have devised they dont really have a need for a true FB…

  • HairyBush

I was working outside and I got “dinged”, “obviously” I need to be more careful.

  • J Hill

    Jerrymcd Jerry McDonald
Tererelle Pryor working on field after practice, throwing to intern-types. Don’t recognize coach on field with him.

    ——————————————————

    Really?

I thought they had to completly shut him down?

  • http://InsidetheOaklandRaiders Goldie7

Absolutely good news. I am not sure why many fans were worried. If you really think about it Mr. Davis would not cut Hagan because his work ethics were awesome all preseason. Happy Labor Day all. GOD BLESS THE USA and I Thank all Honrable Men and Women protecting our country. GOD BLESS our Honorable Military.

whoever waived sterling moore for that crappy azz porter need to hit the bricks. how dare they fugg up my mup pick!

  • severeraiderz

    J Hill

Reece is a beast in the passing game and a does well enough in the running game to have us at #2 in the league last year. He is changing the way the FB position is looked at. Its not quite what Ditka did for TEs but it is a shift nonetheless.

Also, we are NOT getting Briggs, as much as we would like to have him. Not gonna happen.
Move on and forget about it..
Make a good dinner tomorrow for you family. AL Davis is not going to provide you, me, or the rest of the faithful with a banquet of Lance Briggs..
    Forget about him..
Focus on how our DB’s are going to somehow stop the pass.

    +++++++++++

ROFLMAO…So I guess we are not going to get Briggs…

The general manager of the Oakland Raider values speed over the ability to catch the ball in traffic and the ability to gain yards after the catch. Hagan doesn’t fit into his system.
    ************************

Just consider him the Fred Biletnikoff of this century. Freddy B wasn’t fast, smoked like a chimney, ran the most precise routes you’d ever see and rarely dropped a ball that was within 3 feet of his hands/body. Of course, he was lathered head to toe with Stick-um but in the day, that was OK. After FreddyB touched the ball is was out of service for 15 minutes while they tried to clean all the Stick-um off of it. The only other Stick-um freak, also a Raider great was Lester the Molester Hayes. He could catch a ball without hands. All it had to do was hit his body and it would just stick there.

Reece is a good FB/WR hybrid…Antoher god one is Stanley Havili, the kid from USC…He was cut by the dream team…Truly agame with him as e is a footballer.

  • J Hill

    Severe,

I agree that Reece is a beast in the passing game.

However, I’d rather have 3 WRs or 2 TEs on the field instead.

Key to beating Denver Monday Night:

Heavy doses of Bush & DMAC between the tackles. Do not give up on the run no matter how stout Denver’s Defense appears to be. Nobody can stop 4 Qtrs of Bush/Mcfadden. Our running game was the key factor in every game we won last year. The times we lost were when Cable flinched and abondoned the running game early when it was met with early resistance.

Denver, with Dumervil and Von Miller have the ouside pretty well locked down. We need to attack the soft underbelly, weakened by injuries.

MESSAGE TO HUE: You live or die with our running game.

Naw during his suspension he can still attend team meetings and workout individually with coaches and staff, but no team practicing is allowed. He will be getting quality work in with Raider employees the whole suspension

It was an uphill battle for Moore simply because it was unlikely that we would carry 3 rookie CBs.

Porter made a helluva play on that play he broke up but the Seattle player caught the deflection.

    Plus I think he’s a gunner prospect.

  • Orthodoxdj

I feel A LOT BETTER about things. Hagan makes plays.

I am going with Hue and Al on this. They want to win…so let’s roll.

I just hope the standard of production is legit.

Meaning, the very concept of “decoy” is anathema of the very concept of productin.

The coaches believe DHB and Ford gives this team the best chance to win….let’s see how it plays out on the field…for the better.

The Raiders at least deserve the chance to play a regular season game before you all toss them under the bus

  • HairyBush

Once we have a respctable corner opposite of Routt I will then start to think we have a legit chance of being a playoff contender.

The solid football talk never gets a chance with all the fruitcakes interferring. I kind of enjoyed the late night crew but now they’re all gone.

It’s just guys whining and crying all day when i don’t come in here I no longer miss it.

Would totally agree if Reece was an average FB, but he is a better receiving option than a lot of TEs in the league. 6’3″ 240lbs, runs a 4.4 and has good hands

  • Thec07

Joselio Hanson, the nickel/ slot DB from the eagles that was bumped because of the additions of nam, and dom-cro…

We need to bring him in he has game…

  • DonManoukiansNeighbor

Routt’s confidence has to be threw the roof knowing he’s not going to be the whipping boy all season.

Jhill…..what? Tonga is by far a better blocker than Reece. Terrible? Your evaluation skills are terrible…..and to the idiot who said Reece was a beast and with that 2nd ranked run game schit….go to hell and dont ppost on here anymore

  • HairyBush

Chris Johnson will be the new Tebucky Jones

  • SnB offense defense specialteams

Reece is essential for this offense….and he puts production on the field from his position.

Keep him…the running game got it done last year with him as the fullback.

How many 1st downs have you seen from Reece…plenty!

I admire the willingness of the Raider fan to deconstruct things that are actually working and prop up things that are unproven

  • Method To My Madness

Severe u are so smart to even hype up Reece like this….u know a FB needs to block first and reece cant

  • J Hill

    I hear you Severe.

I think Meyers and Gordon are MUCH better blockers than Reece, and since it all starts with DMac and Bush, I’d prefer them on the field.

Gordon and Meyers are also solid pass catching options. I just don’t agree with keeping Reece on the field for the 2 or 3 plays he MIGHT get called.

  • Thec07

I thought we would have brought back lito shep over giordano…

  • SnB offense defense specialteams

    B&uce,

The Raiders can put in a big body on those 3rd and short or goal line….the Raiders have gotten a lot of production out of Reece.

Until a certain receiver steps up…gotta keep Reece there….

  • Method To My Madness

Actually show me how many teams in NFL dont use a real FB….we run power run game and u need a FB….Tonga should be on roster. reece did what this preseason? Not one thing
