RB Bennett waived, S Giordano re-signed; WR Hagan dinged

Just returned from a news conference with coach Hue Jackson and player availability in the locker room.
During that time, we learned that the Raiders waived running back Michael Bennett and re-signed veteran safety Matt Giordano.
Jackson said the Raiders arrived at the decisions after studying the roster further.
In other news, wide receiver Derek Hagan has what Jackson described as a “ding.” Hagan said he got hurt in practice Sunday but that he is full go for the Denver Broncos game Monday night.
More later. Off to transcribe and write.

What production SnB? He made a few pplays while missing many blocks

The question should be, is a “real FB” critical to the offense the coaches plan to run?

What value do the coaches place on this position, how critical will it be to the success of the offense?

Hey, no Priesttj aka Baghdad Bob posts so far!

Did he follow through on his threat and retire?

No more slanted, Al-Davis-is-doing-great-things (37-91 last 8 years) posts?!

  • Thec07

What up LMN, saw you raising a lot of hell earlier…
    How are you doing?

  • J Hill

Tonga is not a “real FB”.

They are trying to develop him into one the same way the stashed Reece on the PS and tried to turn him into a FB.

Tonga is still a work in progress.

    FAR from an Oren O’Neal.

  • DKnight007

Wow. Finally getting rid of Bennett but keeping Giodano ahead of Stevie Brown and Lito Sheppard??

    WTF?

  • SnB offense defense specialteams

    Method,

Reece out of the backfield gave them 25 receptions and 3 TDs.

That was better than starting wide receivers.

Until a receiver(s) or two truly step up and “put it on tape” …the production that Reeece provided is still necessary.

Sure, a pure blocking back would be great…but for a team with production problems…even a gadget player like Reece provides near-term value

  • Method To My Madness

SnB…Damn just short yardage…we talking entire game. Reece not good enough. Tonga is better suited to block play after play. All these other mfkers on here know didley

  • DonManoukiansNeighbor

    Method to your Hostility

Reece had 1 less receptions and 33 yards less then DHB and 2 more touch downs from the full back position. Who more valuable?

  • alex7

Reece is a part-time FB, used mostly for passing plays.

The team should have the other half of the FB tandem for short-yardage situations, I-formation runs, goal-line blocking.

    Kinda simple.

You may want to include the whole Raider coaching stsff as they are the ones making the decisions…

  • Tjbwall

Marcel Reece is a matchup problem to every defense once we get him matched up with a linebacker. He loses his some of his advantage in the redzone and on short yardage situations. I think on 3rd and 1 we put in Gordon at Fb or B.Campbell in there

Tonga is still on the P.S so hes still an option if Hue feels Reece isnt his guy for the Power Blocking scheme

When you need a blocker for a given play, just stick BCampbell back there. He’s got the strength, speed and blocking energy to open any hole.

    Speaking of Reece …

We need to completely scrap the FB dive.

    That play NEVER works.

  • DonManoukiansNeighbor

Doesnt lito have to wait until after the first game?

  • morilla

Hagan is a more talented receiver than anyone we have. He seems to be the definition of “professional wide receiver”. He catches anything thrown at him, knows how to use his body, runs precise routes and can make things happen after the catch. Who cares about 40 times, what did Timmy run? Hagan is a true possession receiver.

Yeah, ford made some plays last year, albeit circus act plays that only happen once and awhile. The others were off of reverses, that is not a possession receiver. You need one of those on the field.

But so what, let them play who they play and we can address the situation later.

    Tonga is terrible.

I didn’t see ONE play from him that says he should be on our roster.

Reece is terrible too, but I don’t see Tonga as an upgrade at all.

FB is still a HUGE hole on this team.
    ______________
tonga can block. That’s what we need him for blocking FB
Reece is a match up nightmare. Should have kept tonga on the roster. That’s cool tho he’ll continue to develope on the PS.

  • J Hill

Play Stephen Heyer at FB around the goaline.

He looked pretty nimble on that play where he caught the deflection and ran for the 1st dn.

  • Method To My Madness

SnB….we are a running team….get it? Our FB sucks….and reece didnt make alot of plays only a few of them…this is how we lose still

  • Thec07

    JFORD <——Best WR

Everone else including hasgans cn get in line st the counter…

  • severeraiderz

Our TEs and Reece will be the key to the game on Monday night. Champ Bailey will do a good enough job on Jacoby, im not sold on DHB being a consistent threat this early in the year, and im sure Denver will put 8 or 9 in the box. Von Miller and Elvis are both LBs that are better suited rushing the passer and whom struggle in pass coverage, Rahim Moore is a ballhawking safety but he is over aggressive and bites on double moves and his size causes struggles against TE’s. Our TEs should be able to get open against their LBs and safeties and quick swing passes to reece and the other backs should remove those extra defenders from the box, and screen passes will slow down the pass rush. By the 2nd quarter we can start pounding the rock and free up the play action for later on.

it’s unfortunate that some of you are SERIOUS when considering sticking B. Campbell or a rookie TE at FB on important short-yardage plays.

This isn’t Madden. Despite a guy’s size, he still has to know how to read a defense, find the correct guy to block, take the right angle, or move to a second level if necessary.

Some guy trying to learn a different position can’t be expected to just know this stuff.

Playing Fb isn’t like playing quarterback smart guy….there are alot of teams that do just what you are arguing against

A guard or Te knows how to block PERIOD. Beast like Gordon and Campbell give us the best chance for a short yardage situation

Alex7, they are football players it’s not hard to teach them these things, it’s their job.

It’s not like you couldn’t tell B. Campbell who to run between and tell him to make the biggest hole he can. Then all the RB has to do is get behind him and try and pop out the other side.

I seriously don’t think it’s that far fetched to stick Campbell out there as a FB in short yardage or goal line situations, you act like it would be like trying to teach him Chinese or something.

Yes The Fridge Perry had to attend a short yardage goal line school for months prior to running the ball in during the Super Bowl. I think he had to show his certificate to the white hat when he reported.

    M to my m

Most teams run out of singleback formations so I don’t see why its essential for him to be a blocker first…if anything a fullback that almost exclusively blocks tips the defense to whether its a running play. Reece is a good enough blocker to get the job done and he’s getting better
