Boss, Murphy and Mitchell still out; Hagan returns

Wide receiver Derek Hagan returned to practice Wednesday, just as he promised he would. Apparently, the ding he suffered Sunday is better.

Who said you can’t unding a ding?

That leaves only receiver Louis Murphy, tight end Kevin Boss and safety Mike Mitchell as the only ones on the 53-man roster who aren’t able to practice.

There’s still time for Boss and Mitchell to return in time to get in some meaningful reps and get up to speed for the regular-season opener Monday night against the Denver Broncos.

Their status won’t be revealed until Thursday, when the Raiders are required to designate players probable, questionable, doubtful or out.

As of now, it appears as if Murphy will be declared out. Mitchell likley will be doubtful. Boss likely will be questionable. Just an educated guess on these.

*Recently re-signed safety Matt Giordano has switched from No. 49 to No. 27. You can take that as a sign that safety Stevie Brown isn’t in the Raiders plans for another go-round.

Brown was released Saturday, signed by the Carolina Panthers on Sunday and waived Wednesday.

*Nick Miller was the only one returning punts at practice tonight. That has been the case the past few practices.

Therefore, it’s logical to assume that Miller is going to be the punt returner against the Broncos.

If coach Hue Jackson opts for a change, Denarius Moore, Taiwan Jones and Jacoby Ford are the logical candidates to take over.

Jackson has said in the past that he is intrigued by the prospect of putting Ford back on punts, but only on occasion. Translation: If a game is tight, Ford might be thrown in to return a punt, with the thinking that the potential gain is worth the risk.

*Receiver Chaz Schilens is practicing for the third straight time. Once again, he looks as healthy as he has been since late last season.

It remains to be seen whether Jackson is confident enough in Schilens’ recovery from a leg injury to play him in a game. What’s more, does Schilens start Monday?

Jackson likely won’t divulge his starting receivers until Thursday night, though we will try to coax it out of him later tonight.

It’s interesting to note that Hagan isn’t even listed on the Raiders depth chart, while the six other receivers are listed.

That brings about the possibility of the Raiders not even activating Hagan for the Broncos game. Too early to get worked up over that one, though.

*The Raiders are practicing under the lights for the first time since 2009, when then-coach Tom Cable took the Raiders to the Coliseum for a night practice in advance of a Monday night game against the San Diego Chargers.

This marks the first time the Raiders have brought in portable lights to their Alameda complex since they relocated to Oakland in 1995.

As long as Jason does not try to force DHB a pass just to try an get him invloved early, its too critical to get on a roll early. DMAC and anyone with a pair of hands until we have some points on the board.

Where did I say I thought Barnes was good??? I pointed out an article that John Clayton wrote. I think he is an average player who does a good job in the run game and struggles against speed rushers. He has had mental mistakes in the pre-season, which is expected when making a position change that some linemen have compared to being asked to write with ur left hand after spending ur entire life using ur right.
Lmao so Gallery is top 5 because you say so??? Ok buddy then Wiz II is the best LG in the league just cuz he is, its science lol. I was the biggest and remain the biggest critic of that pick. There were several OL I preferred in the 2nd, but so far he has looked very good in the pre, easily as good as top 5 Bob.
When I comes to ur point about a team completing an 8 yard pass the letting time run down, what do u think an offense does after a 4 yard run, do u assume they go no huddle or something??? They run the same amount of time and are getting less yards on every play. Why do u think teams run when they want to chew up clock and close out a game??? Why do teams almost exclusively pass during the 2 minute offense. Also a good passing team will pass more and of course have some incompletions, thus stopping the clock. Come on man you can’t be both this naive aaannnd this stubborn.

  • morilla

I think that defensive front is going to come out angry. I’m sure there are going to be some big plays by Denver, but I see those mfers bringing it on Monday night.

Key to the offense will be the tackles. Keep those edges clear and clean.

  • Blackmamba_20

Veldheer is pretty decent in the run game, lets hope RUN DMC goes for a biggie like last year straight of the bat.. Orton crumbles under early pressure and Tim comes in by the half, Raiders Win big on opening night..

  • Yep, I’ll admit Michaels is a bona fide Raider Hater. It’s a big game.

  • raideredoutL.A.

Its gonna be a tough one, opener and rest of season, honestly the preseason did bring me kind of down.

The defense really concerns me with the depth behind the starting corners, it isn’t great, DVD will be a trial by fire whenever CJ goes down. Joe Porter, Chekwa, man I thought they would of re-signed Lito by now… and thats not asking for much.

LB’ers is another big ? McClain has to take a big leap to make up for Groves and Wimbs. I like Wimb as a pass rusher but dude is being paid as a top tier LB, expectations rise. Depth behind them isn’t great either.

D-Line ok with me and so are the safeties.

    * You have to believe Huff will be playing alot of corner this yr. since we haven’t got anybody else. So who plays FS now, Chekwa, Branch, Mitchell, Gio??

Boy oh boy, I’m anxious to see what happens Monday.

This guy is a keeper. His IQ is pretty high. That is how you find out if you’re about to get cut without asking. If he can read offenses as well as he reads between the lines, he’s gonna be the next……. I mean he’s gonna be the first……………
