Report: LB Banta-Cain working out for Raiders today

A report just surfaced about the Raiders working out veteran linebacker Tully Banta-Cain today. A subsequent report said Banta-Cain passed his physical.
The latter news portends the Raiders signing Banta-Cain at some point today. He has spent six of his eight NFL seasons with the New England Patriots. He also played for the 49ers in 2007 and ‘08.
Banta-Cain, 31, started six games for the Patriots last season, and he recorded five sacks. His best season came in 2009, when he notched 10 sacks.
Banta-Cain underwent surgery for an abdominal strain in July, but he apparently has recovered well enough to resume his NFL career.
The Raiders don’t practice until 7:05 tonight, so there won’t be any comment from coach Hue Jackson or Raiders players until after 9 p.m.

I hear the media keep referencing how good Denvers pass rush will be with Miller and Dumervil back. I think Von Miller is going to be very good, but Dumervil benefited from system. Denver is switching from 3-4 to 4-3 this year. Dumervil is not a 4-3 LB, and the pass rush is not going to be coming primarily from the OLBs anymore anyways. So what are they talking about?

Ausberry gonna cause major problems whether they stick him with a safety or LB, then let Bush and DMC hit them guts with delayed handoffs and iso plays. Would love to let Ford and DHB catch some bubbles as well when Denver starts playing soft on them

The Payton Manning surgery, out for basically the season. Colts give the guy the richest contract in NFL history and not even a peep from the media. Polian and the owner go scott free, main stream media, they give them a pass. If it were Al Davis and the Raiders, well you guys know how espn and the rest of the media would be spinning this story, the bias to the Raiders just rubs me the wrong lay. The media and espn will find a way to blame the Raiders and Al for this mismanagement.

I hate to break it to you, but DHB played a good role in limited reps in the pre season, and showed major improvement. This trend will continue during the season. believe it or not this kid is growing up and developing right before our eyes. how far he takes it or how good he becomes remains to be seen. However, Hu jack and saunders will put him in the position to achieve.

I walked out after that stupid bobble head impersonation with the football against KC that year that lead to a game sealing INT for them…but, in all fairness, he has improved and that ball he caught at the 3 with 2 defenders around…I had to put my beer down to make sure that was #85 who caught that.

I feel that moore and ford have now made DHB a luxury item, he now does not ever have to live up to the number seven pick. he just needs to contribute and be solid, our wr group is in good hands. If the pre season is any indication he is moving up fast, has taken a major step forward and will be thorn in the side of our enemies for years to come. Just depends on what he signs for and what he is projected to be? He was signed to a 3 year extension after his 10 sacks in 2009, 2010 he had 5 sacks. Was going to count $4m against the cap and had to have surgery after his injury did not heal after last season.

Tully Banta-Cain Scouting Report
Banta-Cain is an undersized defensive end who is built more like a linebacker. He is incredibly quick off the line of scrimmage. He doesn’t have great speed but has enough to turn the corner on a consistent basis. He is quick to close on quarterbacks. He has good change of direction skills and will turn and chase plays from behind. He isn’t big and tends to struggle against the run. Banta-Cain looks more like a linebacker but may not be fluid or athletic enough to drop into coverage. Also, he probably doesn’t have the speed to turn and run in coverage. He might be best suited for a 3-4 defense and allowed to play the rush backer position. At the very least, he can be a situational pass rusher.

Only reason people are picking the donkeys over us is because since we lost miller and nnamdi and fired cable the season is over. Little do them empty minded pos reporters know that miller did contribute for our O but hevwasnt our WHOLE offense! Nnamdi did nothing but take away a field and only came away with 19tackles and NO INTS! and we won games with out him. the point is that we will be in more shootouts because we have a poor passing defense and a much improved passing offense with weapons at wr, te, and coming out of the backfield. The point u made is that teams will chew up the clock, completed passes chew up much more field than a running play. They also chew up less clock, a team will opt to pass on us before running if our passing D is bad because it moves the ball toward the endzone much quicker, thus taking up less time. we had the 29th RUN-D, fact, and now our PASS-D surely has digressed… which means our D is plain bad! add to that mix our DC is a tool..
I claim we on D will see a lot of 12 snap series, run or pass, doesnt matter.. run is often a bit sideways and passes are often more deep thats true, doesnt matter. What matters is 12 time 40 seconds.. usually teams runs the ball at their pleasure, now they will do the same passing the ball..
Lets say 50/50 to keep it even, thats 48 passing yds, 24 running yds.. thats 72yds, if they start at the 20 its a sure 3 points each drive, of course some will be incompletes, but some runs and passes will be for more that avg too.. so that 72yds in 8 minutes.. sure 3 and often 7 points
so add that up with our O getting a lot of 3′n’outs, that will make a deficit, timewise and pointwise… which then means we are forced to throw, which then again means its furthermore predicable to defend against
I dont buy into this years O-line is better, and I dont believe in Jason C, because he is too slow, snap-scan-release just isnt upto par. The Longer Jason C takes to deliver the the ball, thehigher are risks that some of our Linemen makes a mistake of draws a penalty..
So no I dont believe when you say we will have an top 5 offense.

Watching Arizona get beat by Oklahoma State. Ok State is clearly the superior team, but the Foles kid from Arizona looks like a pretty good pro prospect. He has a good arm (and maybe trusts it a little too much), but he’s accurate and shows good touch when he needs to. Moves around pretty well and shows good composure in the pocket.
A couple of folks in here have mentioned him, and I can see why.

DHB better perform quick this year because there are guys who can take his role in a heartbeat. Some of you guys in here have been blaming the Dline, particularly the DT’s for the run defense for years in this forum. I have told you guys over and over, it’s the LB’s who do not get to the point of attack, they don’t stack the opponent they don’t shed their blocks. The DT’s have actually played well.
To prove my point, notice how our starting LB’s from just a couple of years ago are all out of their jobs. The defensive line players we have would start on any team in the league.

Too bad you can’t grasp the concept of a great offense making the defense look better by keeping them off the field.NE,Indy,GB,NO-NONE of them had great defenses.Teams that rely on great defenses-Balt,Jets,etc-will lose in the playoffs to a team that scores points.It has always been that way and will always be that way.

I am not saying the Raiders gotta trot out a top 5 defense.

Seymour..post 483…that’s not totally true as a group. Rolando actually did fairly well for a rookie in a position where he’s running the defense and has to earn their respect, and all the while, he’s a rookie. Lets see if he upgrades his defence against the run this year as he’s pretty good against the pass.
And, Wimbley had a good year and received a big contract for his efforts. Of course, he’s going to have to step up his game as well to justify the big money contract.
