Defensive coordinator Bresnahan Q & A

By Steve Corkran
Saturday, September 10th, 2011 at 10:19 am in Oakland Raiders.

Chuck Bresnahan is in his second stint as the Raiders defensive coordinator. The Raiders made it to the Super Bowl with Bresnahan as their defensive coordinator in 2002.
On Friday night, Bresnahan spoke with the media for the second time since he was hired by the Raiders to replace John Marshall.
Here is the entire transcript:

This preseason, how do you evaluate it?
Progress, but slow. We’re taking the strides , the things you saw in the preseason were very vanilla and not a lot of playing time for the 1’s obviously. We’ve gotten the practice time and we’re excited to get out there and show what we’ve got in Denver.

Looking forward to playing all your starters?
That’s just preseason. Again, this preseason was unique because we’re all doing it right from the get-go in training camp. It’s the first chance we had with the players. But we’re excited. We’ve made progress and we’re right on track with where we need to be.

Did you change terminology too much, negating fact that you had 10 starters back?
There’s a lot of carryover. That’s something you have to do when you come in, you have to really watch that – especially when you don’t have an offseason. You try to keep things … There’s going to be new terminology and there’s going to be some new wrinkles, but again that’s part of the game. No matter what you do. Every year you change up and you try to improve your defense, so whether it’s the same coordinator or a new coordinator, we keep taking those strides forward. Like I said, I am excited to see where we’re at on Monday night.

What’s the biggest challenge Denver presents?
We’re going to say it every week: the first thing we have to do is stop the run. We have to be physical, and that’s what we’re trying to do. We’re trying to get out there and set the tone for the game on defense, and the primary thing is to shut the run game down and force the game to be one-dimensional. When you do that, you have the opportunity to do some special things.

First team did that pretty well, didn’t they?
Yeah, for the most part. We had a couple of little things we had to get ironed out, but they did a good job against the run. And now we’ve got to tie it all together an dplay 60 minutes of good football, with 11 guys playing the same defense. And no weak links. And some special things will happen.

What did DeMarcus Van Dyke learn in the preseason? Was it good to go against Larry Fitzgerald, etc.?
It’s excellent, especially when you don’t have an offseason. It’s getting thrown to wolves a little bit but … DVD has a tremendous amount of confidence in himself. Again, he’s made strides the entire preseason. And when you look at some of the catches made on him, he couldn’t be in better position. Now he’s just got to make a play on the ball and he’ll be fine. But he’s got a lot of confidence.

How much will it help to get Chris Johnson back?
You can never underestimate the importance of a veteran corner that has a lot of experience. And he brings an attitude to the field as well. We’re excited as heck to get him back.

In the brief time he played this preseason, it seemed as if Rolando McClain was a little more active than he was last season?
Yes, Rolando is going to be the heartbeat of our defense. We have a lot of veterans, but he is the guys that is going to be our signal-caller. He’s in the middle taking control and he’s excited to get going, and I am excited to see him play Monday night.

What were your impressions watching McClain’s rookie season on videotape
There is always going to be room for improvement, but I saw an incredibly talented young man that the sky if the limit as far as his future goes. The way he attacks the work week, in the meeting room, on the practice field, taking it even to the preseason games in the time that he played, and even off the field – I think he is a professional and I am excited to see the progress he makes in Year 2.

Do you expect Michael Huff to play a lot of nickel corner?
He’ll play in the slot, he’ll play our nickel corner, but again we have some things we’ll do. He has had a very productive preseason for the limited amount of time that he’s done.

What did you want to see out of Quentin Groves, who played more than any other starter in the preseason?
Well, he’s in a situation where he needs to gain experience at the linebacker position, so we played him in both base and the nickel. And it was really, really beneficial for him, because he got a lot of experience, lots of playing times, saw a lot of things he may not have seen yet in the limited experience he had last year.

It appears as if the defense is healthy right now?
No doubt. And you guys know how I am too. We’re going to play with who’s out there, and if someone does get nicked or banged up, then the next guy has to come in and pull his weight.

How does Trevor Scott look since his return from a knee injury?
Trevor has come back strong. He’s had a tremendous rehab, a very good offseason not being here, and he’s come back in tremendous shape. I am excited to see him fit in the mix as well.

Is there still another level for defensive end Matt Shaughnessy to attain?
Everybody’s got another level. It’s all up to the time and effort you put into it, and he’s a professional and works at his trade on the field and off the field. He puts in extra study so I am excited again – it sound repetitive – to see him and where he progresses.

Is Trevor Scott strictly a defensive end?
That’s something we won’t discuss outside the locker room, but you know that he gives you versatility. He’s comfortable where he’s at right now.

Time of possession will be a huge issue with this team. It MUST be 2:1 for the Raiders to be successful.

    ^^^^^^^^
Raiders definitely need to control time of possession and score TD’s make sure that Chuck B lead defense is not on the field all day long!

I’m not confidant in Chuck B at all!

He needs to earn respect and prove us wrong who are doubting him as a legit DC of this team!

I would LOVE to be proven wrong!

I would love for Hue to run a 2 back set with McFadden and Jones in plenty of mis-direction screens and draw plays to slow down Dumervil and Miller when he decides to blitz…and I think they’ll bring the heat, early and often to test our o-line out. Pound the rock and set up some shots down field with play-action passes. On defense we need to CONTAIN the run and mix in some zone coverages and plenty of overload blitzes. Go Raiders! Oakland Raiders 26 Denver Broncos 14

    ^^^^^^^^^
    Yep!

My thoughts exactly! They need to attack Dumervil side with by pounding the rock with DMC, Bush and Jones!

By doing that, they wear Elvis down and beat him down physically making him tired and slow on pass plays.

  4. DKnight007 Says:

    BTW!

Good job Cork on that! Thumbs up!

The pressure should be on Chuck B being the “new” DC to improve this defense from last year and not cause it to regress!

    ***************************

While I agree controlling the clock is vital, 2 to 1 is pretty damn extreme.

40 minutes to 20 minutes for TOP, rarely ever happens in games, unless you have a kick azz defense.

  6. DKnight007 Says:

Still not enough though from Chuck B.

You should have asked him what he brings to the table as a DC and how he will improve the secondary with correcting communication problems, making plays and simple play calling.

Dont take me so serious. I am just joking around
unless you are looking for a fight. In which case, type away sonny

  8. SharkCatcher Says:

Some of you hate on DHB as if he had sex with your high school sweetheart. Give the kid a break, WHy not root for a 6 catch 80 yard performance instead .

  9. Plunketthead Says:

I like Bey and hes my MUP

  10. Just Fire Baby Says:

I think DHB will have 6 catches for 120 yards and 1 TD opening night.

    Just a hunch.

But I still think on the whole, he will still be disappointing most of the time.

I see Hue and Coach Davis implementing a force the ball to DHB gameplan to start the first-half, but I think DHB will finally man-up and make a few plays.

  11. Plunketthead Says:

just because everyone hates on him so much
I will root for him that much harder

  12. Plunketthead Says:

This year will be hard to predict. I think Hue has more control then any coach in some time. So we have to predict what Hue will do, not what Al will do or what Hue and Al will do.

    Yours hopefully
    plunkhead

  13. Just Fire Baby Says:

I think Hue has more control than any other coach, because him and Al Davis think much more alike than any previous coach.

  14. Plunketthead Says:

I cant even type anymore. The new AZ MM law is a wolf in a sheeps costume.

  15. SnB offense defense specialteams Says:

I hope the defense is ready to play.

The offense is either going to score or have quick 3-outs with the emphasis of trying to re-create the greatest show on turf

  16. SnB offense defense specialteams Says:

I like that Breshanahan is focused first on the run defense.

Its about freekn time around here after almost a decade of completely ignoring and glossing over that important aspect of team defense

  17. Plunketthead Says:

I cant remember the last time I went to the store or fed the chickens or bucked up some wood.

  18. Plunketthead Says:

I am betting the house that Denver will look like boys trying to stop DMAC. He should have a monster year

  19. SnB offense defense specialteams Says:

I hope the o-line is ready for a pass 1st offense

  20. J Hill Says:

    SnB,

You really think we will be a pass first offense with McFadden and Bush in the stables?

I think our offense is going to be pretty versatile based on the matchups.

I think we are going to see a lot of 2 TEs against Denver since their DEs and OLBs are a little light in the arsse.

  21. SnB offense defense specialteams Says:

    Jhill.

    I hope i am wrong.

  22. Just Fire Baby Says:

There isn’t many O-lines IN THE LEAGUE, that will be able to consistantly stop Denver’s edge pass rushers at Invesco on obvious passing downs.

We just need to avoid those situations as much as possible, and make sure not to let those situations get out of control, i.e. fumbles, pick 6’s, hurting the QB, etc.

I think Dumervil and Miller will be the top sack tandem in the NFL, with 25+ on the year.

  23. J Hill Says:

There are going to be times when we line up 3 WRs, Boss at TE, and McFadden in the backfield on 1st and 2nd down.

And it SHOULD be that way.

Mix it up on offense the same way we need to mix it up on defense.

  24. J Hill Says:

I see a 2 TE set neutralzing those Dumberville and Miller with no problem.

  25. Just Fire Baby Says:

There are going to be times when we line up 3 WRs, Boss at TE, and McFadden in the backfield on 1st and 2nd down.

    ***************************

That lineup does not allow for a FB, BTW.

  26. Just Fire Baby Says:

I see a 2 TE set neutralzing those Dumberville and Miller with no problem.

    *******************************

I don’t think the simple solution to block two Pro Bowl level players, is trotting out a 6th round pick (Gordon) in his first NFL game.

  27. J Hill Says:

So you have Miller on pro bowl level alreay, eh?

I’m sure you can see the logic in putting BIG arsse Gordon next to Veldheer and Meyers on the other side of Barnes.

You really don’t see how that slows them down?

  28. Plunketthead Says:

Von still has to prove himself and dumerville has not played in some time. I bet Dumer gets injured again and Miller struggles all year

  29. J Hill Says:

That lineup does not allow for a FB, BTW.

    ——————————————————

Neither does the 2 TE set.

  30. SnB offense defense specialteams Says:

i dont think the raiders are tossing out 2-te sets without k. boss

  31. Just Fire Baby Says:

So you have Miller on pro bowl level alreay, eh?

    *********************************

I have him as a shoe-in for defensive ROY, and a Pro Bowler next year.

I don’t think size is the answer to them on pass protection. You need agility.

And remember Dumervile is DE (only played 1 year in 3-4, 4 years in a 4-3) and Miller is the OLB.

So they will find matchups with Miller and Dumerville on the same side of the LOS.

Either way, that is the ONLY WAY Denver beats us, is putting those guys in situations to shine, with one of the largest crowds in the NFL (Denver #4 biggest stadium capacity) messing up our snap count and jump off the ball.

Not really worried as much with them when they come to Oakland, because we can use hard counts and things.

There will be a lot of silent counts on Monday, and that puts OT’s and ESPECIALLY rookie TE’s at a huge disadvantage.

    Gotta run…………

  32. J Hill Says:

The Raiders kept 4 TEs on the roster.

I think they are a part of the plan.

  33. SnB offense defense specialteams Says:

I am kinda talked out with this game. We’ve been here so many times with the rhetoric.

I want to see, for the 1st time in a long time, a Raider team PREPARED to compete out of the gate.

That means on field production and few if any excuses.

No penalties, smart reads by the QB and wide receivers that catch the ball when its thrown to them.

The defense making adjustments if something isn’t working, manning up and playing good run defense ON EVERY PLAY.

Otherwise its all just the same ole rhetoric on this blog.

Its production over promise….that’s my theme for this year

Chuck, while washing dishes: “You know hon, I was just thinking, if I just put four defensive backs at the first down marker and tell them to tackle the guy before he gets there, it will prevent a first down every time!”

Hon: “Oh you mean like a prevent defense? I thought Gruden was yelling at you for that?”

“Well, no, it’s different. You see, the 4 guys stand back there and that way they can’t get their first down.”

Hon: “Oh…what if the receiver runs past them, or if they miss the tackle?”

Chuck: “No, no, you’re not understanding it. They’re back there, and that way the other team can’t get the first down!”

Hon: “What if they throw a screen pass and two angry linemen block one of your 4 guys?”

  71. Hagar the Horrible Says:

We know there are a lot of “haters” in the media, all over the place. Here’s another one from the Philadelphia Daily News, Ed Barkowitz. He wrote an “AFC PREVIEW” of all the teams in the AFC. At the end of his Raiders comments, he added: “…it is widely held around the league that the Raiders will always sink as long as Al Davis is running things. By the way, anybody seen JaMarcus Russell?”

I don’t have a clue why his hate extends over 3000 miles to the city by the bay and its owner? But, his ending comments show bias and his comment on Russell is now outdated and illrelevant. He’s a real dick head and I hope the Eagles lose all their games.

  72. Gerard Says:

    Tragedy Follows Mile High Humiliation
    (AP)

Much more was lost on Monday night and (insert new stadium sponsor here) Stadium at Mile High in Denver when ESPN analyst Mark Schlerueth committed suicide after the Oakland Raiders defeated his former team the Denver Broncos by a score of 110-3. Freinds say the NFL record performance left Schleureth in a state of despondency immediately following the game and that he appeared “glassy eyed and certainly not himself” according to one observer who refused to be named.

“If there’s one thing Mark could never stand, it was losing to the Raiders” said a friend. “He was already dealing with the stress of looking in the mirror everyday and seeing this massive head staring back at him”. “That’s not an easy thing to deal with”, quipped a sobbing former NFL linebacker and ESPN analyst Tom Jackson. Jackson continued- “I know I won’t be able sleep well for at least a week after that disaster”.

Adding to this tragedy was the news that Bronco head coach was severely beaten by Raiders Manager of the General Partner Al Davis in a remote area of Mile High stadium.

As if this news wasn’t enough, reports coming from Denver Memorial Hospital state that doctors were unable to sew back the head of Bronco QB Tim Tebow, whose large noggin was decapitated after being tragically decapitated during the 4th quarter of Monday night’s game by Raiders defensive end Richard Seymour. Tebow had come in to relieve critically injured starter Kyle Orton, who been knocked unconscious and left with a broken neck after being sacked by Terrelle Pryor.

Broncos owner Pat Bowlen commented “As much as the tragedy of losing a former Bronco hurts the fans and the entire Bronco family, we are more disturbed by the final score and losing our third straight game to the Raiders”. He continued “THAT is the real tragedy here”.

Interesting the media likes to say the Raiders will do nothing until Al is gone, but they don’t say stuff like that about other owners like Buffalo’s or Cleveland’s for instance. I think part of the reason is there is still that fear about Al Davis that his Raiders WILL suddenly make a charge. If this guy hates Al Davis so much why worry about if the Raiders do anything or not? “Widely held around the league”. As if by saying that it makes it correct.

I’m beginning to think a lot of this Al Davis hate (from other than Raider fans who are disappointed with him) is out and out anti-semitism and further racist when u see some of the comments about our black QB’s. I realize this Barkowitz guy is jewish too, but it doesn’t stop it from being questionable.

Blog posts, journalists and conspiracy theories are just noise.

    Straight Up!

It might be that DEN views our secondary as a weakness – They may try to test our CBs, and see how we look without #21.

If that is the case, then we need Seymour and TK to get good pressure. Routt and CJ37 won’t last if we don’t collapse the pocket.

If we can get pressure on the QB, like we did last year, look for some bad throws and ints from Orton.

    BigTed,

Truth is that Seymour, TK and Wimbley need to earn that check and get after the Quarterback.

If the pass rush is weak…the Broncos will throw every down.

If the pass rush is killin the Broncos, then they are going to try and run the ball.

Either way, the defense has to step up and the key is for the elite players to play to their contracts…not just put in an average performance.

That means Seymour, TK, Wimbley and Routt leading the way with smart defensive playcalling from the DC

  102. SnB offense defense specialteams Says:

    BigTed,

These guys can’t fold. That’s been a big difference between Raider teams and other more successful teams.

The Raider stars usually put in average performances in for the most part….with an explosive game here or there.

They need to start playing more consistently….these guys have to become like household names to the average fan.

Seymour is the highest paid defensive player in the league. He should be considered the top DT in the league this year in production and opinion.

Same with Wimbley…they should be mentioning his name in the same breath as they do Demarcus Ware, Clay Matthews and Cameron Wake.

Routt should be an unquestioned pro-bowler.

I am not saying these things to complain..just the reality that you have to have a few consistently elite level players that opponents have to game plan on.

What might that have done for this franchise?

What would that have done for the confidences of Rookies Murphy and DHB? Maybe they don’t make as many mental errors and drops?

What would that have done for the careers of Jamarcus Russel and Tom Cable?

I would like to visit the alternate Universe where the Raiders had won that game, and see what happened to that team…

  104. SnB offense defense specialteams Says:

and here’s the starting defense for the Raiders…Kamerion Wimbley is someone that Coach Belicheck mentioned earlier in the week as someone that will give them problems…he leads the AFC in sacks and QB pressures…expect Brady and the Patriots to slide the protection to give their tackle some help

  105. BigTed707 Says:

    SNB -

We have seen them fold all too often over these past 8 years. The only team that can beat the Raiders IS the Raiders.

These Raiders have to believe in themselves, and know that they CAN win. Unfortunately, they have been beat down so many times that thier confidence is shattered. Last year was a great step in the right direction – they kicked ass in the div! – Now they need to take it to the next level.

    3. Get the “speeding, bullet receivers” into the game. Keep the passes to DHB short, to Ford where ever he wants, to Chaz high and inside where he can power the catch in, to Hagan where he can use his hands, etc.

    4. Stop their run and let the players “play to their pay,” Seymour, Kelly and Wimberly, among others.

    What?????????

Last year was EASILY Joe Flacco’s best regular season, and his postseason numbers under Hue the previous two years were very Jamarcus-esque.

Not saying Flacco improved because Hue left, just saying that you need to go look at his stats and playoff appearance numbers from last season compared to his two years with Hue.

GREAT interview with Al Saunders. That’s what I’m thinking about the “Speed”. It ain’t only the straight line speed that matters. It’s more “quickness”. It’s not the 40 times out of pads that matters. At the combine they should run the 40 in pads, and show their mobility in that atmosphere.

    http://www.raiders.com/news/article-1/QA-with-Coach-Saunders/4c73c316-170d-4bef-8a9a-72505e7f620c

  165. raiderzmaverick Says:

Last year the % of balls caught compared to the # thrown their way:

    Hagan 56% caught (24 out of 43)
    Murphy 53% caught (41 out of 78)
    Ford 47% caught (25 out of 53)
    DHB 38% caught (26 out of 65)
    Schillens 56% (5 of 9)

The ones that caught over 65% are the TE (who actually had quite a few longer passes) and the RBs.

Our receivers need to be more consistent.

But, for those who wonder why DHB is given a hard time is because of this. He gets so many targets, but caught not so many. This pre-season he was in the game for a lot of time, but didn’t catch that many (he did draw 2 PI penalties).

This is why I trust Moore more also. I’ve seen him make catches and adjust to the throws that Campbell made, whereas we’d say to DHB “well, he could’ve caught that, but it’s a tough one”. and his defenders would say how it was a bad throw.

This year DHB is more stable on his shorter routes. I hope they do that and get Moore and Ford on the longer routes.
