Update on injuries to WR Ford and FS Huff

By Steve Corkran
Tuesday, September 13th, 2011 at 3:00 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Raiders coach Hue Jackson just wrapped up his news conference with the Bay Area media in Alameda.
Among the many topics he addressed, Jackson said wide receiver Jacoby Ford suffered a hamstring injury and free safety Michaell Huff came away from the Broncos game with a strained groin.
Jackson said he won’t update the injuries until later in the week.
I’m covering for beat writer Jerry McDonald today, as he returns from Denver and prepares for a short week before the Raiders travel to Buffalo for a game against the Bills.
Therefore, I will be working on a story for the paper first before I file a story off Jackson’s news conference. The players were off today.
Practice will resume Wednesday morning, with the Raiders flying to Buffalo on Friday afternoon.

Grads also moved the ball up and down the field in that game. I’ll take a QB who’s willing to take some chances and make things happen with the occasional turnover, over a guy who has trouble getting first downs let alone touchdowns.
    ===============

then you will take losses over wins as well?

grads lost every game he started for us last year and was banished to be a back up for the bungles because he cant beat an over ratted noodle armed rookie.

JC IS 8-5 AND UNDEFATED IN THE AFC WEST!!!!!

That said, I thought Campbell looked much better this preseason. He didn’t blow the game last night (he certainly didn’t “win it” but he didn’t lose it either). The conditions were pretty tough there last night, particularly with the crowd noise for a visiting QB. So I’ll give him a pass on this one and expect better things to come in Week 2 in Buffalo.

But don’t try to serve up this nonsense that he looked good last night.

Grad moved toward a loss….JC moved the ball all up and down field vs Jax and you lamblasted the cat now Grad gets this bullschit praise? no buddy stay consistent. Grad sucks and was beat out by a Gingerhead Rookie for a reason. That game last year vs AZ team scored 3 points entire 2nd half….Fk Grad and his supporters

  16. JB Says:

We still need to fix the O-line. Satele, Carlisle & Barnes are NOT the answer. They, Satele & Carlisle, are simply not powerful enough for what Hue wants to accomplish. Neither can hold up to a bull rush. Barnes is simply not starting ORT material. He’s fine in his role as the elephant blocking TE and as an emergency back-up OT. Other than that he’s just a liability. We need those 3 positions filled with more powerful players. Here’s what I recommend: Pick up Leonard Davis as a FA-ORT (6′6″, 350#) He was released by Dallas as a Cap space move. Stick him in at the ORT. Bring BCampbell up to the starting ORG position. Again power and fast pulling capability. Move Wiz 2.0 to center. Leave Satele as back-up center or just trade him for a 4th or 5th round draft pick. Move Heyer to OLG. That would give us a line of Veldheer, Heyer, Wiz, BCampbell & Davis. If we can’t get Davis then use Barksdale at ORT. Let him learn on the job if necessary. He’s already better than Barnes and has a good upside. With this line-up we will have the Bully O-Line group that HueJack wants. Our running ball control game will be gold. Our passing game will improve by default with that running ability.

Did he really only have one tackle all game? Funniest part is that is one tackle more than I remember him having. I think I watched him wiff three times.

All I’m saying is Campbell is 30th in the NFL in passing yards after Week 1. Grads is actually 31st, just a few yards behind Campbell, even though Campbell attempted nearly twice as many throws.

I don’t even mean to turn this into a Grads-Campbell thing. Grads is gone and that’s fine. But don’t try to sell Campbell as some sort of hero in that win. It was all about the defense, Janikowski, McFadden, maybe Reece, maybe DHB and Bush and the line in sealing the deal at the end. We won and I’m happy. I hope Campbell kicks azz next week and from here on out. Let’s face it: we’re going to need far, far better from him if we’re going to vie for a playoff spot though.

To be fair, he was back in pass coverage a lot last night and the defensive line was taking care of the running game.

  34. RAIDERMAN99 Says:

Have to agree that RoMac’s presence against the run has been conspicuously absent thus far in his NFL career. That aspect of his game has been a disappointment.

However, the Mules failed to gain 40 yards on the ground last night. Granted, they’re a passing team and Moreno and McGahee aren’t world beaters, but that was a fine job last night – even if Rolando didn’t appear to contribute much.

One positive aspect of McClain’s game so far has been his recognition on screens. He once again showed good recognition, made a nice drop back, and his length enabled him to make a fine deflection last night. Could have easily resulted in a pick.

But yeah, it sure would be nice if Rolando showed more run stopping aptitude.

  38. RaiderSam Says:

McClain has recognition, he is more of a flow and drag tackler, not an impact and fumble inducing, tackler. That being said, he is effective and thats all that matters..i guess. Agree the o-line needs sync and dominance, and Carlisle and Satele will be exposed by the bigger Jet and Patriot d-lines….we’ll see how it plays out, still early. So someone said Leonard Davis and maybe Flozell? Could they make it through a season?

Rolando McClain had a broken up PASS! he is a BEAST! and so what if he didn’t make a tackle…that’s what happens when you get double teamed and handled. He is the play caller for the defense…he is the defense team captain. And again you two are morons.

JC did exactly what he was supposed too! And the O-line is going to get better and better.

If you have nothing positive to say then your not part of the NATION! again…do us true Raider fans a solid and end your lives please! your too stupid to be on here!

  41. kidseven Says:

I’m rooting for Campbell like most everyone else, but he’s nowhere near the better QBs in this league and, if he plays at roughly this same level, will be the main reason the Raiders can’t become a serious contender.

I actually think the rest of the Raiders have been underrated for several years now. Al’s size/speed drafting is probably working, it’s just that we’ve had such awful play from the QB position. How many games did we almost win with people like McClown and #2 at QB? How many times could we have won if they’d have been able to score 17 points in a game?

So now with JC at the helm we’re just enough better to win a bunch of those close games against average competition. But Campbell MUST take some chances and find a way to get the WRs involved if we’re going to win shootouts with good teams.

The best hope at this point is that the defense keeps improving and becomes truly dominant. With a dominant D and running game, anything is possible.

Reading some off the blogs last night during the game. Lots of people on here saying they couldnt watch the game anymore when denver had there last drive. People on here saying we suck were gonna lose the game. With over three minutes left oh we are not gonna run clock down raiders gonna lose. Man this team is better then lots of you think. McClain is a 2nd year MLB that is responsible for setting the defensive front and making adjustments as the QB audibles. When did you see anyone in the front 7 out of position on their run fits and gap responsibilities? Denver spent all night trying to cut block McClain. I even saw a Bronco cut block McClain instead of the Raider that was closet to the ball carrier. I was a big Kirk fan when he was here but there is no comparison with what McClain brings and what Kirk brings to the table. I would have loved to see Kirk take over for Groves at the Will (his natural position) spot but it didn’t work out that way. Just becuase he doesn’t show up on the stat sheet doesn’t mean that he isn’t the best MLB that the Raiders has had in years.

DMAC is the most complete RB in the NFL.

There’s nothing this cat can’t do if he stays healthy.

Great pass catching ability ? Check.

Fabulous blocker, ferocious blitz pick up ? Check.

Hit a hole with incredible quickness and explode through it ? Check.

    Top notch speed ? Check.

    But most impressive of all…

Is there any other back that delivers a blow like DMAC so frequently does at the end of his runs ?

The man has the incredible ability to run almost parallel to the turf and launch himself like a missile at defenders.

He punished a few fools last night, just like he did on that beautiful TD in SD last season.

  75. Seymour Bush Says:

Believe me, there is lots to be happy about in a win in Dungver. McClain actually did play EXTREMELY well in coverage. The first two plays of the Raiders season began with a penalty (punt return) and fumble deep in our end. That is NO way to begin a game more or less a season. But on the 3rd down, Romac did an excellent job diagnosing the play, the pass was incomplete, they settled for three, we win the game. Just the fact the we recovered but a bad start, in a very hostile environment to not only play well, but WIN, is a good sign.

  76. alex7 Says:

    DT42,

well said. We’ve been below average at so many positions for so long, that it is a bit exciting to see even average (solid) NFL talent like McClain, Houston, and Veldheer.

    ^^^^^^^^
The Raiders line if stronger with the experienced Satele at Center and Wiz at LG. This is Carlisle last year as a Raider I would think, but the guy adds valuable experience to that O-Line and he doesn’t make penalties.

I was disappointed with Heyer last night, but I think he will be alright and I think I know Barnes problem. He doesn’t get low enough in his stance and get his back azz down more. He will hold his balance if he just gets into lower position.

Plus the long azz snap counts when the opposing teams crowd is going nutts doesn’t help the O-Line.

The snap count needs to be shorter when the crowd gets louder!

I would like to see B Camp get some snaps in the elephant, short yardage, and goal line packages.

exactly!!!!! Romac had the broncos baffled, and the line backers didnt over puruse or end up in the wrong gaps. He had the team where they were supposed to be and when they were supposed to be there.

I saw him whiff a tackle, and he didnt get good penetration on his blitzes but he can improve. tackling has never been an issue for him. The run defense was light years ahead of what we have seen around here.

In case you missed it the passing game looked to stretch the defense horizontally, on bubble screens and the like. They ran lots of underneath patterns and Jc utilized it. JC ran the plays that were called. You didnt like the game plan to bad.

In the immortal words of Big Daddy Kane it was “another victory”

  102. Sullivan44 Says:

Just remember, everyone. There are a lot of commenters here who represent Oakland. Brien likes to accentuate the worst of it. Don’t buy into the image of Oakland that he likes to project. He’s exaggerating the grit of his background to get more attention.

  103. antispy3 Says:

True enough, SharkCatcher. Trouble is, outside of the Denver LT (I am on the books as a HUGE Ryan Clady fan, to the extent of favoring him over DMAC when they came out of college, although I endorsed the pick)the NE & NYJ Olines are significant upgrades over the Denver & Buffalo (isn’t Buffalo supposed to be a notch below Denver’s Oline)versions AND @ least Brady (jury still out on hotdog eater Sancheezie. Don’t think Tommie Kelley won’t forget that image)is a significant upgrade over Orton & Fitzpartick.

Also; we play BUFFALO this week; the rest of the world only matters in the case of matchups. So, Fitzpatrick is the QB we have to prepare for on this week. The Raiders’ motivation this week will be from DMAC’s rookie year, playing on two turf toes & blowing the lead late in the contest.

He’ll set the way & the Raiders should effectively dominate play this week. Second installment of the bully should go off successfully. But, being the NFL if the Raiders can’t clean some activities up (personal fouls should be limited due to the opponent. Denver brings a certain chippiness out in the Raiders and visa versa)and display the inherent growth expected in playoff caliber teams ( being an out of division opponent should resonate in the lockerroom this week & be portrayed on the field Sunday). So, I expect a double digit win with the Raiders again running out the clock to finish the game. This week’s victory in Denver is meaningless without a followup performance Sunday in Buffalo.

  104. alex7 Says:

He has to be better than Miller. I like what I say and trust Hue’s ability to utilize his pieces. The Raiders are going to be exciting this year. We are young and have great veteran leadership in the locker room now. We should bring in Tofu and that veteran CB (im drawing blanks right now). The refs called a terrible game. Cut out some of those penalties and that punt return and this game isn’t close. A win is a win in the NFL though. Raiders are back to playing exciting football again! Mistic,

Brady got 500 yards by checking down “constantly”???

You can’t just make stuff up.

RBs caught ONE, ONE, ONE pass last night for New England. Out of 500 yards, Woodhead had 6.

Our RB and FB caught 4 of 13 completions.

Don’t compare those two offensive styles.
    =================

throughout his career brady has utilized the check down, just like manning rodgers or any one else.

CHECKING DOWN IS NECESSARY AND IT IS BETTER THAN FORCING THE BALL FOR TURN OVERS.

Complain about a check down that results in a positive play is like foolish.

By the way you do understand that some of the underneath passing was designed and not the result of checking the ball down dont you?

Shark, last year’s lame excuse was the “new playbook every year” one. Second year, he’s still doing exactly what he’s done his career long – check down, miss deep throws, not be aggressive.

It’s what he is. It’s good enough for 7-9 every year, which is what his career average is.
    ——————————————————-
Agree. Hue should shorten the routes of the wr’s, maybe that will boost his confidence with the deep throws. Seems as if he’s going through his reads too quickly and relying on the check downs often.

    True but Highly unlikely.

Brady vs Chuck B? Belichick vs JC? Advantage not us :)
    =================================================

Can’t argue with those points. And I think you know my opinion of JC.

Still, I maintain that the Jet inability to score points keeps us in that game.

And while the Patsies figure to be a tougher nut to crack, we might match up better with them than expected. Key will be to get to Brady. Their defense isn’t all that.

We’ll be home dogs going into both those games, but I think we’re right there in both of them.

I gave the Raids no chance to beat the Eagles a few years ago. And amazingly they did, even with JaMoron.

    ^^^^^^^^
Agreed. He probably saw the disaster of the 3-4 when Ryan came onboard and became scared.

To Ryans defense, he didn’t have the right personnel to run the 3-4 at the time. He was reaching and having to put Sapp as a DE in the 3-4? A terrible experiment.

The Raiders were being shredded on the ground badly. that year.

You need solid OLB’s, a legit NT, and a legit DC who knows how to run the 3-4 and be good at it.

  175. J Hill Says:

How can you say Al doesn’t like the 3-4 when we ran it for so many years?

We tried to run a 3-4 with Rob Ryan here, but we all know Sapp eff’d that up.

And stop the penalties because we gave them points and yardage with penalties.

There were some play calls I loved in this game. First and foremost it was the 2nd down call very late in the game, a gutsy pass to DHB that won it. Everyone was expecting run run run with Mike Bush, they throw to DHB and basically ice the game. Very gutsy call there.
The deep ball to DHB from the 2 yard line was also an excellent, excellent play call. The old “Bobbie Bowden” play.
And of course, let’s not forget the greatest play in football, my own personal favorite, the kneel down.

I still feel as I do about the O-line. They played to their ability but I think it can be that much better. Getting Leonard Davis FA-OT from Dallas would be BIG. Carlisle & Satele are ZBS linemen, typically more finesse blockers rather than power blockers. Both of those two are a liability to a bull rush up the middle. I know Wiz needs to learn the line calls but I suspect that’s where he ends up before the year is over. Moving Wiz to center and backfilling his position with Heyer is a good start to completing the power blocking line. The last missing piece would be the powerful BCampbell at ORG. That O-Line would the definition of a power blocking line. Our running game would them be gold. If the LDavis pick-up didn’t take place, Barksdale would then be my choice for the ORT. Barnes is fine as the elephant TE but that’s it. He’s just too much of a false starting machine. It’s just in his nature.

On a different subject, we need Boss back badly. Meyers should be moved to the #4 TE or traded for a future draft pick. He can’t separate. We really missed having an open TE in the pattern yesterday, Meyer is NOT the answer. We need to move Ausberry up to the #2 TE position and get him reps and playing time. You most likely saw what could be done with TE’s yesterday in the Pats game.

DHB did well yesterday and made at least two key receptions. I would like to see more rotations of different WR’s throughout the game. I think it would benefit all involved. Hagan should be activated and NMiller should be traded for a future draft pick.

These are just some of he things that I’d do if it were up to me – which it isn’t, obviously!

The win was a sloppy one but a win nonetheless. We are on the right track now we need to keep this train rollin’.

Perhaps now the Raiders will activate a TRUE possession receiver (Hagan) & give Campbell a true third down option. Boss coming back (perhaps next week?) will definitely be an upgrade @ the TE. These additions will do nothing but improve the confidence of Campbell.
