Raiders grades vs. Jets

Here’s a more complete version of the Raiders grades which were cut back in the print edition:

Pass offense: The Raiders played it safe, with Jason Campbell completing 18 of 27 passes for 156 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions. Campbell threw the ball away when pressured, his only sack coming when he tripped over a teammate. Biggest completion was an improvisational 28-yard strike to Michael Bush, setting up a field goal and a 10-point lead with 2:37 remaining. Grade: C-plus

Run offense: Darren McFadden had 171 yards on 19 carries including touchdown runs of 70 and 2 yards. Remove his two biggest runs (70 and 27) and he still averaged 5.6 per carry as Raiders rushed for 234 yards on 32 carries against one of league’s best run defenses. Denarius Moore had 23-yard reverse for a touchdown and Bush a 1-yard plunge. Grade: A

Pass defense: Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez passed for 369 yards, but Tyvon Branch cut a Jets drive off in the red zone with an interception in the end zone and despite having starters Michael Huff (concussion) and Chris Johnson (hamstring) out early with injuries, the Raiders had Sanchez confused and tentative while their offense was scoring 24 straight points by employing a mix of zone defenses. Grade: B

Run defense: Shonn Greene, the Jets feature ballcarrier, was held to 59 yards on 15 carries, a 3.9 averager, and the Jets finished with an even 100 yards on 25 attempts. The Raiders had four tackles for losses and were greatly improved from the unit that was gouged for 217 yards and an 8.7 average the previous week in Buffalo . Middle linebacker Rolando McClain had 12 tackles. Grade: B

Special teams: Sebastian Janikowski had a 54-yard field goal to close out the half and a 49-yard field goal to put the Raiders up by 10 with 2:37 to play. Jets had a 53-yard punt return by Jeremy Kerley and a 50-yard kickoff return by Joe McKnight, although neither one resulted in points because of defensive stands. Shane Lechler averaged 56.5 yards on five punts, with a 39.8 net despite the big return, and one punt inside the 20. Taiwan Jones recovered an Antonio Cromartie fumble on a kickoff return to set up a touchdown. Grade: B

Coaching: Raiders pushed all the right buttons coming off of a heart-wrenching loss in Buffalo . Hue Jackson’s back-to-back trick plays (McFadden gained 27 yards on what was supposed to be pass to Campbell, Moore 23 yards on a reverse) resulted on the touchdown that put the Raiders up 31-17. Defensive coordinator Chuck Bresnahan adjusted on the fly with a depleted secondary with more zone defense than usual. Grade A

So what’s the weirdest thing Waters ever saw in Oakland?

“I’ll say this, that’s the first time I ever saw an old lady in a wheelchair shooting me the bird with both fingers,” Waters said to laughter. “That’s crazy right there.”
