Rolando goes toe to toe with media in rare interview
By Steve Corkran
Monday, September 26th, 2011 at 12:06 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Raiders middle linebacker Rolando McClain does not enjoy speaking with the media. That’s a shame because he is in the minority in that he almost always has something interesting to say.
Yet, it’s the way he chooses to conduct business. On Monday, McClain broke from tradition and graced the media with a nearly 4-minute question-and-answer session, while holding a car seat with his baby in tow.
McClain has been the target of criticism for his uneven play the past two games. However, he doesn’t shy from the criticism and uses it as fuel to get better.
Here’s the transcript from the interview with McClain, which took place about an hour ago:
Q: Good game plan for Jets?
McClain: I think our game plan was just to be more physical than them. They pride themselves on being physical and that was just the game plan. Try to stop Santonio Holmes and stop the run.
Q: What does it say about secondary to keep losing people and still win?
McClain: It’s just a testament to how well we practice, trying to get so many guys prepared for the game. Chekwa stepped in and did a great job. Just have to give coach Rod Woodson a lot of credit. Guys got hurt but guys stepped in and played well.
Q: Did you feel difference with how defense played in first half and second half?
McClain: I just made a statement at halftime that how we played with the Bills, maybe they’re thinking that what happened last week is something that will continue to happen. That’s not being able to finish the second half. We just wanted to make the effort to finish in the second half. (At this point, his baby cries) I don’t think he likes the media either.
Q: How important is it to beat a quality opponent like that?
McClain: It feels great. They’re always in the AFC championship game. They have been the last two years. Just to go up against a team, try to compare yourself to that team, to beat that team kind of lets you know where you are.
We’ve still got a long ways to go, but we’re going to keep pushing, keep working.
Q: This week is another one of those games?
McClain: Huge game. One of the best teams in the league and they’ve been a premiere team in the league for a while. Just another way to measure where we are right now. Just go out and compete against these guys.
Q: Different kind of test with the Patriots after the physical Jets?
McClain: This is just a finesse team. I mean, Tom Brady’s a smart guy, has many weapons around him, with his receivers as well as his tight ends. His tight ends are playing great right now.
Q: Are you happy with your play this year?
McClain: I’m just trying to step my play up each week, try to get better from what I did last year and get better week by week.
Q: What did the sellout crowd feel like?
McClain: It felt amazing. I think that won was due to them. It was huge just to have the fan support. I think they feel what we feel. We feel like we’re turning this Raider program around and I think they feel the same thing.
Q: What was the difference between this game and Buffalo?
McClain: We knew it. It was still in the back of our minds what happened in Buffalo. And we won’t forget it, we didn’t forget it. We won’t forget it for a while. It was still fresh in our mind. It’s your job to report on what we did. And we wanted to quiet the critics, saying we can’t finish in the second half. We just tried to play a good second half.

The one disturbing thing I did see was when the team members all got together in the “let’s all circle the wagon” rah, rah, rah, huddle in both the pregame kickoff & beginning of the second half, RoMac did not participate and stood off and away from the group by himself. What’s that all about?
It may be nothing but it stood out & looked a little weird.

You seem to be stuck on fantasy football. He made the throws we had to have when we needed them. he is running the offense as he should. When dmac is rolling why not feed him? You are facing the jests secondary and pass rush, should you throw the ball a ton? no it would be silly.

September 26th, 2011 at 12:15 pm
Jacoby Ford (hamstring) said Monday that he is hopeful he’ll be able to return in Week 4 against the Patriots.
“I definitely have hopes for this week,” said Ford. “This is pretty much the goal that we’ve been shooting for.” The Raiders decided ahead of time to shut down Ford for two weeks while targeting New England for his return. Ford would add yet another dimension to a suddenly explosive offense. He’s worth grabbing in all leagues as a solid bet to lead Oakland in receiving from Week 4 on.

JC is not a general on the field.
=======================
This is untrue. According to the coaching staff and his teammates JC is the general on the filed and the single most important leader on the offense. The entire team is taking and following his lead. They have done so since late last year and it continued through the players only work outs, and passing clinic with the wr group at his home.
The defense knows that if they get stops the offense will score.
Jc makes all the audibles and continually puts the team in favorable situations and match ups.
Because he isnt foaming at the mouth or yelling at everyone every time something goes wrong doesnt diminish his ability to lead.
——————————————————
Yes I’m sure JC does all these things you describe. As well as audible to the plays he has been told to do like a good soldier.
I’m not a JC hater. But IMO Gannon had a lot of say in the game play as well as putting it together. Demanding play from his soldiers. I don’t see that in JC.
JC might get the title because of the position he plays. But he calls what he is told.
Totally different QB’s. One is a soldier the other is a general.

I see the same things in McClain that I saw in Michael huff 2 or 3 years ago. He seems to be thinking a little too much and it makes him a half a step too late. He seems to take the wrong angles, as if he’s just not up to speed yet. A lot of his mistakes remind me of the same things Huff seemed to do. Look at Huff now, he seems to have learned to play at NFL speed now, and his game has improved drastically. I hope the same thing can happen for Rolando soon, the sooner the better. I believe he’s going to be just fine.
September 26th, 2011 at 12:33 pm
Last year when Campbell was struggling and didn’t seem to know the offense very well the critisizms against him were well founded. Now he is doing the right things, throwing the ball well, and leading he team. He is playing great at this point in time. I am sure that if our run game had been shut down he would have passed for a lot more yards, but all he did was go out and do the things he needed to do to win the game.

against Bills JC blew a few. But he looked much better yesterday. This idea that he can’t become better is ridiculous. lots of physically talented players out there. The elites in this league have great coaching and are surrounded by outstanding personnel. Campbell has that now. He keeps listening and improving, he may get really good. Gannon didn’t do squat till Gruden “made” him. Getting sat down may have been the best thing to ever happen to JC. Dude is motivated.

The Patriots ARE a finesse team. Thats not feeding them motivation.

“They’re a physical football team and I felt like that played right into our hands,” Raiders defensive tackle Richard Seymour said. “Because we’re pretty physical up front on the offensive and defensive lines. Any time a team wants to come in and play that type of game with us, I like our chances all the time.”
September 26th, 2011 at 12:36 pm
In week one when Denver got within three points, Campbell completed passes and picked up first downs to close it out. In week two he brought the team from behind with touchdowns twice in the forth quarter and damned near did it again with only fourteen seconds to work with and eighty yards to go. In week three when NY got withing seven he marched the team down the field for a fieldgoal that gave the team a two score lead with under three minutes to go. Campbell is playing like an elite qb right now.

Yes i called JC a great player, just the same as uncle al sees it.
Any qb that can survive what he went through in dc, and his first year in oaklnd, and learn all those different systems, and still put a quality product on the field on sunday is a great player. he can do things very few players in the nfl can do, and has the rare combination of physical gifts leader ship, and humility.
In this offense built around his unique traits he will post very great numbers and in a few years we will be looking back and remembering the super bowl runs that he helped produce.
BOOK IT!

I agree with you Dakota, as should anyone, that he has done nothing to be called great.
But my point is he hasn’t had the luxury of playing in the same system or coaches in back to back years until now so knowone really knows what his celing is.

Well, I don’t know, anything could happen I guess….maybe Campbell isn’t what he has shown through out his career and up through yesterday….which is a decent game manager who will give you 200 yards if you are lucky lol.

HUEJ WIN !
Lots of big plays. DMAC’s TD run. DMAC option. DMAC period ! On pace for 2k baby ! DMoore reverse.
But the play that really made my day…the one I was happiest about was made by Jason Campbell.
No one has been harder on JC than I have been. I’m still not sold on him. But I’ve got to admit, he came up HUEJ on the drive that ended with Jani’s game clinching FG.
First, Campbell scrambled for a first down. Then a little later, they play I absolutely loved…
Every time JC starts moving around, I get nervous. Always get the feeling he’s got two left feet and something bad is going to happen.
Not this time.
Great poise to move into a vacant area, extend the play while looking upfield…
And then just a PERFECTLY thrown ball…great accuracy, beautiful arc, imminently catchable. Not to mention excellent vision to spot Bush.
Great play at a big moment.
Huej props to JC for his best play as a Raider.

+++++++++++++
This is an interesting phenomenon….attributing greatness where it isn’t deserved.
It happens in here quite often. I think maybe some of you guys have seen such bad QBing over the past 8 years that you glob onto the first guy that looks halfway decent. Just like how many of you started gurgling with Cable’s nut sack after we won a couple of meaningless games to end 2008 lol. Or when many of you guys thought we should dump McFadden cuz of the great Justin Fargas lol.

I didn’t like JC at first. Had that deer in the headlights expression. He has grown and improved so much. not the same guy. He may have blown 2 against bills but that pass where he let Moore jump up and do his thing over 2 defenders was amazing. He knew Moore could do it so he provided the opportunity. Showing leadership in the huddle. You can tell the rest of the offense believes in him. Even scrambles occasionally. JC has a good head on his shoulders.
Who knows how good he’ll get? We got our qb. why mess w his head by looking elsewhere? no one would have thought Gannon would get that good. That is, until the SB.

Random thoughts:
The ‘chuck’ that SRoutt put on Plaxico (that he was wrongly penalized on) was one of the best I have ever seen.
Stan the Man almost knocked Plax on his azz with that two hand, strong, violent shove to the pads.
That ‘chuck’ was so darn good the ref overreacted and flagged Stan.
Way to bang em, Stanford.
Bonehead penalty of the game:
Dez Bryant. I thought Harvard guys were supposed to be smart. Can’t have that, Dez. Could’ve been off the field. Plenty of time to punk that Jet later on.
September 26th, 2011 at 12:59 pm
Putting the Super Bowl on one person or player is funny when Trent Dilfer has a Super Bowl Ring! It’s having the play makers as the Jets and the rest are finding out and the Head Coach to give them the plays they need to flourish! Haters get ready for all of the crow you can eat you are no fan if you don’t believe! Definitely not from the bay where the Raiders were the first team to win a Superbowl from a Wild Card in NFL history and the S.F. Giants well must I say more?
September 26th, 2011 at 12:59 pm
My outlook on Campbell … playing mistake free football (1 int in 3 games) only 2 sacks and carefully picking his spots, good reads, he is doing all he needs to with our run game and special teams. There will be games where the run game might slow up a bit or we are trailing and fighting the clock. Then he will spread em out and do just fine. Hagan and Moore for now, Boss will increase role slowly and hopefully Murphy comes into his own after injury and Ford. DHB should be a punt gunner and thats about it.

I am not saying Campbell has achieved greatness just yet. Only that he is playing at that level at this point in time. If he continues to play like this for the entire season, then he will have played one great season. Four or five of those and he will have achieved greatness.
September 26th, 2011 at 1:01 pm
Oakland defensive lineman Richard Seymour will lead his new team against his former one. Seymour, who was traded from the Patriots to the Raiders in September, 2009, has made it clear he wasn’t thrilled with the way New England coach Bill Belichick handled his departure. I’m sure Seymour will be motivated to knock Tom Brady down a few times to let his former boss know he made a mistake in dealing him. A motivated Seymour is often a productive Seymour.

September 26th, 2011 at 1:06 pm
those who criticize JC are idiots..He is playing great football and is working with what he has. The WR core is still dinged up and yet the guy continues to out the ball in accurate spots….
He had 1 Int all year in 3 games and that came in a last min toss versus buffalo.
He has yet to get stripeed or fumble the ball
And he DOES what what offense needs him to do.
JC is not brady/Manning/Brees/Rogers… but SH1T, are the other 26-24 teams crying about…STFU Dakota …idiot…and be happy he is not Jamarcus
September 26th, 2011 at 1:07 pm
JC played “mistake free” 2 weeks. Yest he went beyond that. when he gets to where he plays mistake free and capitalizes on every opportunity he will be great. He gets there, Raiders are unstoppable on offense.

Why are we whining again about how many passing yards Campbell throws for? The teams in the league who throw for a ton of yards are the ones that don’t have much of a running game, we do. Campbell showed us last week that he can put up big numbers if our running game can’t get off the ground.
Some of you guys just like to gripe about anything you can, just a reminder… we won yesterday and it was big game. I’ll take 150 yards passing if we’re putting up 200 yards in rushing any day of the week, it eats up way more clock.

don’t forget about Gronkowski…i think he’s the 2nd best receiver on that team. We’re going to have a long day if we don’t get some pressure from the front four, given what Fitzpatrick did to us…if I were Hue, I would tell Jarvis Moss or Henderson to get one monster hit on Brady, even if it is a personal foul late hit…just to let Brady know he’s going to be hurting, win or lose.

Weirdest play of the game…
Jets getting flagged for roughing JC, JC flagged for grounding.
That roughing call was a pure GIFT. One of the weakest calls I have ever seen.
Don’t want to unnecessarily critique JC, but here goes…
Watch that play again… JC is under no real duress and chooses to throw the ball away.
Now I know he’s in the EZ and he’s got to avoid a Safety at any cost, but…
If he waits just a split second longer and keeps his wits and his eyes downfield…he’s got DMAC breaking WIDE open for a long gain.
Nitpicking ? Perhaps. After all, can’t risk getting sacked for the safety or maybe an OLineman flagged for holding…but a little movement to extend the play, or just waiting a fraction of a second longer before throwing it away, reaps huge rewards there.
That’s what separates good QB play from great QB play.

by the way…how funny was it when the umpire tripped and fumbled the ball while trying to put the ball down so the raiders could spike and kick the FG before halftime????? If we didn’t get the clocked stop, I think Oakland would have rioted and/or the black hole would have charged the field.

TJ, you are definitely right about Moss. He was playing BIG yesterday. He now believes in himself and he’s bought into what HuJack is selling. He may even play a bigger role next week depending on the severity of ShoNast’s shoulder injury.
Props to my least favorite center Satele. That decleating block he laid on that Jet defender on D-WOW’s reverse run was a absolute picture perfect knock out effort. Carlisle still needs to go.

I assume you are talking about Brady not willing to try to tackle on the pick 6? That was weak…i guess kinda smart so he didn’t get hurt but he had a chance to stop him short. Could have been the differnece between a FG and TD…although given the way the Pats D was playing, maybe it was a TD no matter what.
September 26th, 2011 at 1:39 pm
The thing thats great about reece as a blocker is he is fast, so he can kick out on the outside runs and block for the lightining quick mcfadden. Gordon is not as low to the ground and fast to do so. Rock cartwright will be in the mix too.

Campbell started the game with serious “happy feet” and making bad decisions. One of those was a checkdown on 2nd and 20 that resulted in a loss of 2-3 yards. Shoulda tossed it out and reset.
But, he calmed down once he saw that the Oline was holding and started making better decisions.
No turnovers and decent game management, all that Jackson and Saunders are asking of him, is what he delivered.
September 26th, 2011 at 1:56 pm
I have been very, very happy with Jason Campbell this year.

Jason Campbell, 11th in QB rating, 2-1 record, 65.9%
Alex Smith, 12th in QB rating, 2-1 record, 68.9%
But hey, I would rather have Soup over that huge bust Mike Vick.

New papas don’t get much sleep so I’m sure McClain is feeling that. Our problem is that Belicheat is going to scheme at all our weaknesses, quick drops, ball in open space, multiple receivers on one side, big tight ends on the seams and underneath. That’s what RoMac has got to have on his mind right now.

New England WR’s won’t be a major issue. They are not deep threats, or serious run-after-the catch guys (Welker is good at diving forward for 4-5 yards and knowing where the sticks are).
I suspect Brady will toss it close to 45 times, with a lot of short stuff to TE’s and backs. Lots of screens.
Bend but don’t break, got a turnover or two, and score 30+ and we should be 3-1.

Honestly think he’s hurting real bad and he’s lost a step due to injury.
On the long LT run that RoMac whiffed on, CJ was struggling to gain ground on LT in pursuit and got blasted on a late block.
The old CJ runs down LT there.
Might sound crazy, but I think we really need a full strength CJ. I still think he’s the quickest DB we’ve got. Not the fastest, but the quickest.
And since I’m putting out stuff that alot of peeps will ridicule…if he was full strength, CJ would be the guy I’d most like to put on Welker’s azz and shut him down.

Dakota,
Campbell is looking better than Dilfer. He’s middle of the road. With all of our offensive weapons (please play vs. the Pats, Jacoby), he is doing a fine job in 2011. Give the guy some credit!
++++++++++++++++++++++
Campbell is looking better than Dilfer…yeah so? Maybe, I don’t know Dilfer’s stats that well and am not inclined to look them up. Dilfer is irrelevant to this conversation…unless you think our defense is as good as the 2000 Ravens lol. With Al around our defense will never play at that level.
I give him credit for being a decent game manager. I just quarrel with those delusional enough to think we are going to the SB with him or that he is a “great player”.
We are not and he isn’t.
Step One: Cut Cable’s butt buddies
Step Two: Cut the Cable
Step Three: Cut Marshall (Hiring UFL castoff was not part of the plan….you fail Al)
Step Four: Give the ball to McFadden
Step Five: Get that QB who can take us to the promised land (His name is not Jason Campbell for the slower of you out there lol)
Step Six: Stop the run (not there yet)
Next year we need to look at step 5. I WANTED Campbell back here this season, the market was crap for QBs. I don’t hate the guy, but he isn’t part of the long-term solution to Al’s missing 4th SB ring problem.
September 26th, 2011 at 2:39 pm
I was one of the few who wasn’t all that impressed with Moore.
He was going against 4th and 5th stringers. Not that he looked awful, but he didn’t stand out either.
Gave up some yards as well, TD in the Saints game.
Not news-worthy really. I’m sure he will be available again down the road.

SB,
I see a young man not relaxed and trying to hard. So may I say in all fairness, is he taking on to much or is he thinking to much. My point is, I dont see the instinctive player from Alabama.
============================================
Absolutely correct Dell. You are seeing OC’s running all kinds of things to make him think, not just react. And when he does react, 65% of the time he is making the wrong reaction. As I have said here over and over and over, I just want to see improvement. Week to week. Not just with MCClain, with the other players and with the team as well. Altho I do have to say, after Tomlinson broke past him for 70+ yards, I liked watching McClain body slam Justin Keller after Keller caught a four yard pass. That warmed my heart.
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
SB,
I received a bloody nose in this blog for my defense of DMAC. You know how this blog rolls, take and take more and never see any light of potential or improvement.
It’s easy to go negative. My sense with Mcclain is the same, my gut tells me he comes out on top and will produce as expected of him as a First round draft pick.
=================================================
The issue with 99% of fans, and probably 99.9% of posters on this blog is they want instant results. They see guys like matt Ryan or Tomlinson or Joe Thomas and think that every single player should just come in and be stellar. They don’t realize that for every Ryan or Tomlinson there are 50 players that very slowly develop if they develop at all.
Kids coming out of college for the most part know how to play, it’s becoming a pro and adapting to what the professional football is that requires adaptation. I have said soooooo many times the difference between college football and pro football is like the difference between college football and fast pitch softball. They are completely different games. Knowing how to read a scouting report, what to look for watching film, these kinds of things are what takes time. The issue to me is you cannot regress. Once players start to regress, that’s the kiss of death. Personally, I think McClain might be ok. I am certainly not completely sold.

You can’t say for sure that Campbell is incapable of winning a Super Bowl. Trent Dilfer and Brad Johnson – both unremarkable QBs – pulled it off.
And anyway, it’s pointless to argue about needing a better QB than Jason right now. The season has started and he earned his right to be starter. There isn’t a better option on the team. He’s doing well enough to win.
Save the whining about needing a better QB for the offseason.

If Campbell can play a little above average and let the running game deliver, it’s playoff time. Campbell has some skills granted, but he is what he is, a QB that must play within his limits. The running game and smash mouth physical football is what will get us there as long as we get more players back fron the little nick list than go on it.

When DMAC went hurtling into the Black Hole Faithful after his momentum changing 70 yard TD run he almost took out the fans immediately on the other side of the retaining wall.
There’s one shot there you see DMAC, going backwards into the crowd. You can just barely see a fan whom seems destined to wear DMAC’s helmet. Fortunately he made a last secind evasive maneuver. His accompanying look was like, “woah, dude.” It’s all good!
Chazz knee is still bothering him. Even b4 Leonard took him down with a shot to his (injured) right knee Schillens was favoring it while getting off the ground.

The Raiders announced the signing of 6′ 0″ 210-pound defensive back Ron Parker and released preseason darling Sterling Moore from the practice squad.
Parker has the kind of size, speed and length the Raiders covet. Parker runs a sub 4.4 in the 40-yard dash in addition to excellent times in the short shuttle and three-cone drill. He also broad jumped 9-7. Parker is a long and fast athlete with the tools to develop into more than a fringe roster player.
Moore-as good as he was in training camp and preseason-is probably a fringe roster player. Moore also lacked the elite physical tools the Raiders like in their defensive backs. It’s suprising because it was widely believed Moore could be elevated this week to the active roster due to all the injuries in the secondary.
Don’t be surprised if Parker is elevated to the active roster and Miller is released later in the week. Another option is veteran Lito Sheppard, although if it was going to happen it probably would have been done already.
It’s somewhat surprising Nick Miller was not released today and that no corresponding move has yet been made to shore up the Raiders injured secondary

Just back the team, or prepare to eat crow. Campbell put up 300 plus yds yet they still lost. He is a game manager, just roll with it.
I swear people love “i told you so” more than getting a win.
September 26th, 2011 at 3:39 pm
People were quick to point out 16 game projections for DHB after week 1. It was like 64 catches for 700 yards.
Well after 3 games, he is now on pace 26 catches for about 275 yards, lol.
Let the man block and try to draw 40 yard PI calls. That IS his game.
September 26th, 2011 at 3:40 pm
JC is the qb of the team who leads the league in rushing. Thats what this offense is built on and its hell of good dominate. JC is not gonna throw 300 yds a game and pass for 3 td’s a game not until these young talented recievers learn how to run better routes. But come november we will be in better shape then alot of teams. It seems like every week theres ton of qb’s throwing 30,40,50 times a game. You have to have a running game late in the season cause the wheather will change and these teams that throw the ball all day will be screwed. JC will be above avg this yr might be his breakout season.

Fair enough, but Jason is on a target for similar TD/INT stats right now. In 2002, Brad had 3 TDs and no picks through the first three games, averaging less than 230 yards per game. That’s only marginally better than Campbell so far. Campbell’s one pick was a desperate hail mary at the end of a game, too.

Here’s another interesting question
DID WE WIN THE GAME OR NOT? Take it one game at a time, dont jump the gun on how bad Campbell is, or how good he is. Maybe were witnessing the maturation of a player who has had impatient owners switch out O.C. and head coaches.
Sanchez was beat, the Jets were beat, last 2 AFC title games dont matter, when you were outgained on the ground 234-100.
September 26th, 2011 at 3:49 pm
Dakota, Campbell is a good fit for this offense right now. He’s a game manager sure, but a good one. He’s making the correct reads before the snap and adjusting the play at the line scrimmage accordingly. His completion percentage speaks for itself. No INTs (I don’t count the hail mary — only one if you must), sacked only twice (once by DMC), becoming an expert at play action.
I was one of Soup’s biggest critics at the start of 2010 season but I’m on board now. In addition to all of that, I can see it in his eyes in some of his post game interviews and his choice of words, I think he’s become the leader of the offense.
Naturally, this is what you want out of any QB, but not a lot of guys have it all. JC is certainly getting there and there’s no reason we can’t win with him at the controls.
I’d be more concerned about the D keeping us out of the playoffs than Campbell.

The Raiders continue to leave a trail of destruction on enemy rosters on the way to the playoffs…..

Listen I am probably one of the biggest haters out there that there was on Jason Campbell and last year at this time I was calling for Bruce. But now I feel Campbell is beginning to come into his own. no he is no brady, breese, or rodgers. But he is smart he doesn’t try to force anything. If there is one problem that I have with him right now is that he could be just a little more aggressive, because based on that throw he made to Bush yesterday I do think he has good enough accuracy to take more chances.

To all the complaining and moaning fans…one thing to remember..from Big Al.
“JUST WIN BABY!”
The truth to all true Raiders fans. That’s all it matters….

Is it any wonder the guy does not talk to the media. You guys have no morals, anything for a headline. Where exactly did McClain call out the Patriots. When I saw the headline I wondered how could he be so stupid to fire the Patriots up, by talking trash. Then after reading what he said its not that he is stupid, just a stupid jerk-alist who can’t read, trying to write an inflammatory head line.

The team is averaging 30 points a game…NOT turning the ball over,,,getting quality wins (barring the gaffe IN Buffalo). What is there to complain about?
